Reviewed on 9/3/18 5:51 PMI bought this app long ago, back before the 2013 Moore EF-5. It has served me so well since then. And new features keep getting added, making this app basically a portable AWIPS workstation, minus WarnGen. There’s one thing that I’d love to see added, though, and that’s the ability to set our own storm motion vectors and have velocity products calibrated to that. For people who use RadarScope for chasing, that would make it so much easier. Other than that, this app does wonders for storm chasers who are looking for quick and easy access to site specific radar products. Oh, and the app will snap to the closest radar if you enable location. Even without custom SRV, this app gets five stars for its simplicity to use and the tools that can be had with the subscriptions.

Reviewed on 9/14/18 9:40 PMFive stars is not enough! RadarScope is not only my absolute favorite weather-related app but is solidly one of my top-five overall favorite apps of all time—one of those rare “It’s so good it’s worth buying an iPad just to use it” apps. I found out about RadarScope from watching livestreams of professional storm chasers using it. I figured if it’s good enough for the folks who rely on it to navigate life-or-death situations where small errors could have catastrophic consequences, then it must be one amazing app. Boy, was I right. Yes, this one has a steep learning curve if you’re an untrained, amateur meteorology enthusiast such as myself (I assume if you had a a solid meteorology background, this app would be a piece of cake to use). However, it’s totally worth the investment if you’re looking to step up your weather game. To get full use of it as a non-professional make sure you throughly read the “Radar Products” section in the user guide (and perhaps even outside sources to flesh out the details) to make sure you understand what your looking at (and in that sense, this app also is hands-down the best meteorology education tool on the market). The warnings from the other raters bear repeating here: if you don’t have the knowledge to get the most out of this and aren’t willing to take the time to learn, or if you’re just looking for a basic weather summary to know whether to take a jacket or if your tee time will get rained out, or even if you’re just looking for a basic weather radar, then this app is most definitely NOT the app for you. Also, note that data is provided mainly for the United States.

Reviewed on 8/29/18 2:22 AMThis is the question I get asked at any party, family event, or any other occasion when rain is forecasted or just for the fun of it. When ever someone looks at the weather they go directly to the weather channel (lame). I’ve been using radar scope since the beginning of its time and have compared it to many weather apps which do not even come close to the raw data you see. *Note: These negative reviews this app is getting are false. Knowing you have to choose different radars means your getting accuracy within 150-300 miles. No other app offers this level of pin point accuracy/untouched radar. Now back to my experience: Just a week ago in (Chicago) we’ve hand many big and small storms run through. Big storms are great to see and watch on the app but let me tell you about the small storms. I was just getting ready to leave work and it starts pouring rain. I opened the weather channel app (I know a sin, but it’s a simple swipe up) It said “partly cloudy” of all things. Yes I did update to the current time. Then I opened RadarScope and with beautiful raw data, there was a small cell about 5 miles round/wide measured ‘using the included distance tool’ 👍🏻👌🏻 best feature ever!! There is no other radar app I would ever ask for. I’m by far not a professional I’ve been intrigued with weather watching and to k*** some time. I would beware that you may be asked more often about the weather once people know you have the best app anyone can get. Enjoy this app!

Reviewed on 8/28/19 1:37 PMFirst there are clearly too many radar apps on the App Store that are really more about weather conditions and forecasts. And there are far too many similarities between them, with only one or two that are reasonable. And, THIS IS NOT ONE ON THEM! I you want an app that can delve into NexRad Level 2 and Level 3 radar feeds, including velocities and other important images needed for those who pay attention to storms and early indicators of severity and rotation, THIS IS YOUR RADAR APP!! Look no further! I hesitated for a while now because of the $10 price tag. But, fearing lately with some recent tornado watches and warnings near my home, I made the purchase. My only regret is not getting this sooner. It is that good. But, understand - this is a bit more advanced than your typical weather app. This app focuses on doing one thing - presenting you with comprehensive access to the latest NOAA radar images in hi-res. It’s not a simple weather forecasting app. Plenty of options exist if that’s all you want. The negative reviews are mostly because of people not understanding what they are getting. This is really good. Oh, and it has seamless integration with my Apple Watch, my Apple TV and my iPad. I’ve tested it out on all those, and it worked great. Just keep in mind that you need to set your favorite locations on your iPhone or iPad. Excellent app! Thank you! I may even pay for the service to get lightning and other extras, but the base app is quite good by itself.

Reviewed on 8/28/19 1:37 PMFirst off, the people who are giving 1 stars probably don’t have a clue what they are looking at, the issues most people have on here are not radarscope’s fault, if your not even remotely into weather it can prove more difficult to interpret. That’s not radarscopes fault it’s the fault of the user. Radars are tools used by professionals, amateurs and ordinary people, the radar doesn’t lie on what it sees. If a radar isn’t updating it’s possible the NWS location (which is where the ap gets the data from) has issues, that’s not the apps fault. Sure the ap isn’t perfect but it’s hands down, it’s the best radar available on a phone or iPad. No other can even scratch the surface of what radarscope provides. For weather nerds is worth every dime. Easily able to add other data to get even more out of the radar.

Reviewed on 8/11/18 1:14 PMThis is by all intents and purposes a 5-Star app, but like the famous fancy restaurant that has to get it right every time, RadarScope suffers from a few serious flaws in service. And as someone who pays a lot for the tier 2 package I’d like to think that I have a pretty good handle on things. The fact that there are no actual push alerts for severe thunderstorms is weird. The company told me in a tweet something about something or other but it just didn’t excuse the fact that such a good app for severe weather only gets to 3rd base instead of hitting it out of the park. Also missing are street-level views, or, even just a view that’s more than a blurry long shot. I have to use another radar app to see where precip is and that’s not acceptable at $99 a year. And I get that AllisonHouse is an integration and you’ve started to add some of that functionality to tier 2, but I need to be able to get severe thunderstorm watches AND warnings in tier 2 without exception or excuse. It’s ridiculous to not offer both. With an added AllisonHouse subscription for another $129 a year I get watches and mesoscale discussions. Add watches to tier 2 and leave off the MDs if that helps? I mean I want both but for me to have to pay you $99 and AllisonHouse $129 just to have access to watches and warnings, that’s ridiculous. Again, it’s a favorite app. It’s on my first screen. It’s on my Apple Watch, and even though it’s a much-needed watch native app, it really misses out on being able to do the best stuff because there are no alerts or warnings in severe weather. The fact that you are ok with us using other apps for that shows you aren’t quite understanding how we all use apps. And I also heard in that tweet about how the weather radio app has alerts. As I said to them in a reply to that message, that app is terrible and not even worth wasting words on. And again, no separate apps for basic functionality. For $99 a year I want a really cohesive and excellent severe weather and radar experience. Personally, I might recommend forgoing tier 2 and the $99 and spending $129 on AllisonHouse. You can sign in to them through RadarScope so you still get all the bells and whistles, and you get the data for watches and warnings. But I don’t think you’d get any alerts still. Well, either way, there’s room to make a great app better. Thanks.

Reviewed on 6/16/18 11:44 AMThis app puts professional-grade radar in the palm of your hand. It is high-resolution, updates rapidly, and has a user-friendly interface. All storm chasers (and I am one myself) use this app, which should tell you all you need to know about its quality. You do need some knowledge to know how to read some of the radar images outside of the common base-reflectivity. The critics are either people that seem to think apps should be free, or are not meteorologists, storm chasers, or weather enthusiasts. To the first group of critics I say, you get what you pay for. To the second group I say, maybe this app is overkill for what you need or want - but that’s not a reason to criticize the app itself. It is simply the best radar app I am aware of, and again as a storm chaser for 20+ years, I would know. Now it is true that there is no national/regional radar view - this is because the ability to access individual NEXRAD sites is what provides the detailed resolution, rapid updates/speed, and individual radar analysis products. You can always get another app, including free ones, to see the big picture, and that might be enough for some people, but those apps are simply not going to give you the detailed resolution, or the products needed for in-depth analysis at a local storm level, that RadarScope does. Similarly, displaying a more detailed road map in the background would compromise speed and resolution, and seeing the map detail would require a more translucent radar image that would degrade its usefulness. People that criticize this app are simply ignorant, because those who know weather choose this app hands-down.

But that’s not my complaint so I digress.... my issue is I just bought this app an hour or so ago and have been looking at the app while watching the weather channel and the storms/tornado warnings in PA. The app is giving utterly and completely different information than the weather channel. The app has the tornado box/warning, several hundred miles north of what the weather channel is reporting. There are also warnings in several other places in the north east as per the tv, yet they’re absent from the app. I guess for “professionals” it’s groovy to stare at a screen with a bunch of colors, a few yellow and red boxes that are seemingly hundreds of miles away from what the actual professionals (meteorologists) are displaying... but I guess, what do they know anyway?

Update: the developer keeps refining an already brilliant application. This is THE radar application, far superior to any other out there. Absolutely one of the best purchases I've ever made for my iOS devices—beautiful on the iPad, crucial app on the phone, and a very informative glance at the radar on the watch. Reviewed on 2/6/18 11:04 PMUpdate: still great after a couple years’ usage. Still highly recommended. There’s a reason you see pros posting screenshots from this app on Twitter. Earlier review… I'll lead with the criticism. The UI could use a layer of polish. I don't need flashiness—and most weather apps go for gaudy, so be thankful—just a little more commitment to feeling a touch more native. OK—best thing: data is sent direct to your phone for rendering locally on your device, and there's no map imagery, just outlines of counties, major roads and cities on black. What this means is you get the info really quickly after the radar site makes the data available. Other apps render that data on their servers end and send you images, which take up more data (and that's slower on low bandwidth connections). I can't independently confirm any of this, but they claim it on their web site and in my brief tests last night seem to confirm. Lastly if you're a pro unlike me, you're going to love all the radar "products" available. As an amateur, I clearly need to read up to learn what all of this is telling me. But I’ve learned a bit, and the “Precipitation Depiction” mode is awesome. I pay the yearly fee (low-level) and continue to feel it offers good value.

If your disappointed by the basic application and interested and or already invested in the initial 10 dollars the next 10 dollars to get tier 1 access seems like an appropriate next step. Once you get yourself into the 20 dollar range of access you realize that it still is terrible and the next option to get the holy grail of weather apps is the PRO tier 2. It's only 100 dollars in addition to the 10 dollar app download fee. That's how Doppler Radar works. If you read the description, it says this: "It can display the latest...from any NEXRAD or TDWR radar site in the U.S." Notice it says SITE, not SITES, with an S. There are also complaints of the app being too expensive. Well professional doesn't come cheap in case you didn't know. Where are you going to find a radar app that gives reflectivity, velocity, dual-polarization, VIL all for free? Nowhere. Plus it updates at 2 minute intervals, and it's all raw data. Where are you going to find that for free? People have to earn a few bucks in order to produce an app like this. And I believe $100 bucks a year, is fair enough. This is a gorgeous, easy to use and master weather app. If you want to know wind speeds in a thunderstorm, the percentage of hail in a storm, where the storm is heading, this is the app for you! Reviewed on 11/5/17 3:29 PMEdit 2: I wish there was an option to set a default radar for my location. I moved to an area that is on the far western edge of a radar zone. So it automatically sets me to this radar well to my east, and I can’t see any storms coming because the radar falls off. So I have to manually change it to the radar to my west, which I’m pretty sure is actually closer and covers any storms coming my way. Since most storms come from the west there should be a bias to set cities near the western edge of a radar to the radar towards their west. Edit: Nobody that I’ve seen who rates this app poorly seems to understand how to use it. It’s not because the app is designed poorly, it’s that they don’t understand how to use advanced radar data, which is what this app gives you. If you want a national mosaic that dumbs it down for you, go elsewhere. — Original review: Seriously. This is as good as it gets folks. This app isn't for viewing mosaics of a region. And they don't “pretty up” the data. This is what the radar outputs. It lets you dig in and see the storm in unprecedented detail. I recommend purchasing the Pro package. It lets you see everything in very fine detail. It's Level II radar data straight from the NWS. I've used this app several times to get a five minute lead time on developing tornadoes—that's before the sirens go off. And that was also before I had access to high resolution data. But you have to know what to look for in the data. My only complaints are that I believe the Level II data comes with more tilt angles, so including those would be helpful. Furthermore, a 3D visualization of the storm would make the Pro package even more worthwhile. The lightning data doesn't seem very useful to me. I'd also like to get more data about the storm, like max estimated hail size and the echo top when I tap on the storm track.

Reviewed on 10/11/18 5:03 AMYou guys have been my go-to for years! Wish list: * Composite images. I’d love to be able to see KATX and KLGX at the same time. * 20 frame loops on Apple Watch for Pro subscribers. If this feature already exists, it’s hard to find.

Reviewed on 10/1/18 7:09 PMWhile this may be above the heads of the general public, if you’re a knowledgeable weather enthusiast, student, professional - this is THE MUST HAVE radar app. I would be lost without RadarScope. It has a very simple interface and every radar product you could imagine. I use this app when I go storm chasing and have full confidence in its performance while in the field. Additionally, creating loops and screenshots for media could not be easier. I really cannot speak more highly about this app. Price is $10, but I would happily pay $100 for a product like this.

Reviewed on 1/21/18 9:19 PMThis app is for meteorologists, storm chasers, storm spotters or anyone who is weather saavy. It upsets me when anyone rates this app bad when they don't know how to use it. This app is everything you want in radar and more. If you know weather data it can cost as much as $20 to $30 dollars monthly for hi resolution, this app is unbelievable. Hi res reflectivity, hi res velocity, tilt and beam height, shows your position on the maps. Warnings and advisories. Compatible with Spotternetwork and Allisonhouse. If you are a spotter or chaser this is a must!!

Reviewed on 1/17/18 7:17 AMNot sure what happened with this app, today is January 15, 2018 and for some unknown reason the app is no longer working, It was a great app until a week ago, tried deleting and reloading and then it works for awhile then goes back to error message: "Unable to load image at this time" Also I paid for the pro version, but it won't work with pro version on my other Apple iPad! It keeps asking me to purchase another pro license for my other devices ? That's ridiculous! And Made inquiries for assistance, but nobody responds, Developer support is not available ? Why??
