Reviewed on 8/28/19 1:42 PMI have been using this app since it came out. Garmin is awesome at keeping this app current. This is the app to use for flight planning and in the cockpit assistance. It is super user friendly and can be used in rough weather. I believe this is the most pilot friendly app for flight planning and actual in cockpit usability. You need to keep buying new iPads as they come out because the software is pretty heavy. It is packed with horsepower and every two to three years the processors can’t keep up. I have an iPad Pro that’s a year old and does great.

Reviewed on 8/28/19 1:42 PMI had been enjoying this app on my iPad 2Air as a useful tool in the cockpit for a couple months. So much so that I got a Garmin GLO to compliment the new iPad Pro I bought believing it would enable the app to run better with all that gig space to stretch itself out in. It’s been a great secondary navigation tool to have, and has some really neat features to enhance flight safety for a training PPL pilot planning to continue through ATP. I had spent time customizing a 172 checklist to include the particulars of my flight school so that I can reference it anytime preflight through securing the airplane. Using the iPad suctioned to the window is much less cumbersome than fiddling with a multi-page laminated booklet, especially while flying and working through emergency scenarios. I have added things to the various lists over time - MPHIAS and KIAS for instance. Tonight I added to one of the lists and upon saving, lost all but two categories; the two categories that remained were incomplete. They are unrecoverable. I attempted to restore a previous backup, but that apparently only applies to documents such as maps and charts. To compound the insult, the checklist synced so that the Garmin Pilot on my iPhone and older iPad 2Air are now lost as well. I have an oral and flight Phasecheck to pass prior to flying my solo cross country and now have to spend time rebuilding my checklists and hoping they don’t disappear again. Considering that these aviation products are made for a 24 hour profession, it’s concerning that there is no 24 hour customer support available to call. Searching the web only reveals info about ‘scrambled checklist’ patches. This is supposed to be an app that decreases stress and workload in the cockpit, but not at the cost of adding to it at home.

Reviewed on 8/28/19 1:42 PMFor the most part GP is easy to use and a good deal of pertinent information is presented. It is easy to read and thus far I have found it to be very reliable. One of its strongest features is the coordination between an iPad and a Garmin cockpit. I would like it to follow closer to Foreflight where it comes to departures, arrivals, and easily accessible runway heading information (not just runway 03, but 034 degrees, etc), as this information is buried and in some cases not available at all. Overall, Garmin Pilot is a very good product and I will continue to use it.

ADS-B weather and traffic works great. I like that they generally add features without adding multiple pricing levels. The only weak area in my opinion is the weather briefing which still just gives an DAA standard briefing, and is the sole reason I keep my ForeFlight subscription. This is much better than my GNS! This app needs some improving... - ADS-B Traffic Alerts visually and voice announces "Traffic, Traffic". - Split screen for two Approach plates. Example, STAR split with A/P diagram or Approach plate with A/P diagram. Also split screen on synthetic vision. - Active legs appear magenta and has "approaching waypoint" indicator like GNS 530 so pilot knows when to change course - SafeTaxi easier to find and more availability (my local airport doesn't have it available) - Improve the METAR weather page. It says "No Wx" and many airports I go to has an AWOS and publishes a METAR. - Lower Price! - Make HSI have selectable HDG... For example, Direct a VOR and you can change heading to make needle center. - Needs a "Procedure" button like the GNS 530. I want to load an instrument approach for situational awareness - Approach plate on map page overlay. - Would be nice if Geo-Ref could be available on the actual airport diagram. - Vertical Speed indicator user changeable from 2,000 FPM to 6,000 FPM - Needs Runway Proximity Advisor™: The Runway Proximity Advisor is a visual and audio alerting feature – designed to help reduce runway incursions – that advises you when it predicts your aircraft is approaching, entering, or crossing a runway... Just like ForeFlight - Needs holding patterns and pattern entry similar ForeFlight - Needs reminder messages programmable at certain times - Checklist - Better integration with 1-800-WX-BRIEF to file a flight plan electronically. - Needs a small circle similar to a G/S that has a descent profile loaded to get a proper descent angle to get to desired altitude. Other than this, Garmin Pilot is my choice for the cockpit.

So many critical features missing, no manual, and no help from Customer Support. Since it's recent release, version 8 has already been updated btwice in an attempt to fix this aweful Beta version. Garmin, will you please hire a quality assurance team to complete your testing (prior to release) instead of inflicting this useless version 8 on paying customers. Reviewed on 12/16/18 12:50 PMIt would have been nice if Flying ace 2, the previous reviewer, had upgraded to the most recent version of Garmin Pilot and actually knew something about the program before writing his quite off-the-mark review. Garmin Pilot, in its most recent versions which were released BEFORE the date of his review, fully supports overlaying the approach chart right over the moving map display together with all of the weather and traffic overlays available if you have an ADS-B equipped airplane. It also supports the use of Jeppesen charts which is really only of use to IFR pilots. Finally, it is certainly possible to have multiple windows on the screen. Right now, I have the moving map with weather, traffic and the Jeppesen approach plate on the left screen and, at the same time, an AHRS driven, HSI based panel on the right. These features have been part of Garmin Pilot since before the date of Flying ace 2's review. Garmin Pilot is a fabulous program with a graphics engine superior to ForeFlight at the moment. Garmin came out with a data-driven map display long before ForeFlight's newest release and it is still graphically superior. I expect ForeFlight to catch up soon. That's why I use both in my IFR flying and keep them updated to their respective latest versions.

Reviewed on 12/16/18 12:50 PMI have been using Garmin pilot for over three years now. I serve as the Chief Pilot for a large flight department and Garmin is simply the best. All of our pilots use it and love it, especially with GDL-39 ADS-B overlay. If you have used any Garmin device in the past, you will easily take to the app. The Jeppessen chart incorporation is really nice too for international operations. Great value and customer service/support that is second to none makes this my EFB of choice. Not to mention, Garmin is so far ahead of everyone else in aircraft avionics.

Reviewed on 11/15/17 10:33 PMGarmin Pilot was good when it was introduced and gets better with each version. I believe it has surpassed Foreflight in it’s latest releases. The planning is easier, the Home icons are easier for us older aviators, and a great feature for us IFR flyers is the auto-loading of Instrument charts for all airports in your flight plan being automatically loaded for you. I really recommend Pilot over Foreflight when I am giving instrument instruction and have e several converts. I also like how Garmin makes it’t hardware compatible with other programs while Foreflight continues to be proprietary. My students can connect to my GDL device and get all the ADS-B data. Full feature pilot is also a lot less expensive than Foreflight. Being able to run on two platforms and on three devices is also a plus.

Reviewed on 10/9/18 9:58 PMI have used runwayHD and SkyDemon and for VFR flying and planning they are far superior, versatile and easy to use than the Garmin App. The simple process of importing and exporting a route between any other app (which is possible on all other apps) is not possible with the Garmin Pilot App. From a user experience point of view the interface is poor. I am disappointed as I have recently installed Garmin equipment in my helicopter and was hoping for an easier integration. They have a closed system approach. One can only hope for improvements ...

Reviewed on 10/24/18 2:36 AMI just wanted to bring up an issue I am having while viewing winds aloft forecasts. When I slide the time blocks at the bottom over to a future block to view info, the screen will revert to the default current time block. The screen flickers slightly when it happens. If I am copying wind speeds and directions and dont catch the change I’ll be viewing the wrong info and have to slide back to the time block I was viewing. It seems to do it after about 10-15 seconds of viewing a time block. Otherwise, 5 stars. Maybe something can be fixed in a future update.
C172Pilot's Review of Garmin Pilot
Reviewed on 10/21/18 1:13 AMThe application is excellent. Does not have some of the bells and whistles that Fore Flight does, but for what it does...it does very well. Probably the best it’s ever been, and the user interface is superb. But...unfortunately it’s slow. Specifically on an iPad mini 4, the fastest iPad mini to date. With wx, ads-b, moving map, traffic, Bluetooth connection, my iPad gets hot, the screen refresh is slow, touchscreen response is delayed. The iPad mini 4 just can’t keep up. During flight, scroll or zoom out of the map brings up a gray grid. Then nine inch iPad Pro is too big for yoke mount, and I personally don’t like it on my knee. So rumor says Apple has canceled the iPad mini and the Android version is not worth the effort. Come on Apple!

Reviewed on 1/26/18 1:36 PMI find Garmin Pilot functions well, and I give it high marks for user customization — however, an attribute that I feel also makes it less "intuitive", with a somewhat steeper learning curve than FF. While users can generally find they can "jump right in" to Foreflight, Garmin's Pilot took me a day or so before I reached the "aha!" moment. (True, I admittedly had to "unlearn" FF to embrace Garmin's logic.) So the winner is? For the occasional pilot and "weekend warrior" (which there are many),the hat-tip goes to software producer ForeFlight. However, for the operator with an eye towards integrating existing and future hardware additions in the vast and continually expanding Garmin "eco-system", without question, it's Garmin's Pilot.

Reviewed on 1/12/18 1:47 PMThe iPhone X has been out for a few months now - yet Garmin Pilot doesn’t natively support its screen size. ForeFlight added support for this weeks ago. It’s a tight competition here. Waiting so long to release an update unfortunately indicates how nimble Garmin is with this product. Lastly, since they launched this product, the SIGMET overlay has been composed of a bunch of dots, obscuring the underlying map. Don’t they know that they could make the overlay a different shade and translucent, like ForeFlight does?
