Johntechwriter's Review of Wikipedia
Reviewed on 9/28/18 8:16 PMAs a technical writer I’m constantly researching aspects of the technology products I document. There are informational sites available for specialized subjects, and I know which are the most reliable. But for general interest or biographical topics, I usually fall back on Wikipedia. Considering its content is the product of thousands of volunteer authors, Wikipedia's high standard of article construction, consistent writing style (not too academic, but rather from the “plain English” school), and nearly flawless grammar and exposition — along with its unmatched range of subjects — has made Wikipedia my go-to reference. I prefer the app over the website version because it enables me to fine-tune the formatting of articles, including text size and background tint, and it enables me to archive articles for future reference. Along with its well-crafted articles, Wikipedia's comprehensive bibliographies, complete with active links, add credibility to the articles and make deeper digging about the subject that much easier. That it is essentially free to all (though I am happy to be a donor and hope others will donate, too), and that its content is accessible in many languages, makes Wikipedia one of the web's outstanding resources. Everyone involved with Wikipedia should take great pride in what they have given us.

This app is missing useful functionalities the Android version has. 1) Multiple tabs or pages rather than just one. This increases functionality so much for people (such as myself) who use it to look up multiple things at once. 2) Personal lists under our accounts do not sync and show up. Reviewed on 5/4/18 7:08 AMCan’t understand why I used to read wiki articles in Safari. You need to get this app if you are even slightly intellectually curious. It’s not a question that Wikipedia is the world’s gold standard for encyclopedic information on EVERYTHING, but if you didn’t know that, well, congrats, now you know. My dad got me a set of World Book encyclopedias when I turned 9. I loved those books but they might as well be fire starters at this point. I wonder if kids in the future will even appreciate how valuable this resource is, because they have never known not being able to briefly survey something instantly... The saddest thing about this app is not a flaw at all; it is that in the reference category Wikipedia is only #34, while the #2 is held by a bleeping bible app. Humanity, we still have a long way to go... Several dozen pages I trusted to be saved just disappeared on me even though I’ve never logged out of my account. Uchiha 312's Review of Wikipedia
Reviewed on 5/10/18 4:06 AMThe app is very good for /viewing/ articles, but when you’re trying to edit and navigate to redirect pages and specific other pages, it is a nightmare. When attempting to edit a page that has been moved and the previous page has been made a redirect, the first edit button only pulls up the redirect page, rendering editing of the lead section of the article uneditable. Example: the page Infant Annihilator was moved from my user page User:Thatemooverthere/Infant Annihilator. Now when editing the lead section, it brings up my user page (which is now a redirect to Infant Annihilator). Also, you can’t search for specific redirect pages or nonexistent pages like you can in the desktop version. It won’t let you search for pages unless they already exist, and only brings up pages with the keyword of the nonexistent page or redirect page you wanna go to. Example: searching for the page Aaron Kitcher (drummer for Infant Annihilator who doesn’t have an article) only brings up pages with his name in it. What I want is to go to the page “Aaron Kitcher”, which is likely either a redirect or nonexistent. How am I supposed to create redirect pages or edit redirect pages when I can’t access them? Also, when redirected to a page, it doesn’t give the link “redirected from xxxx” like it does in the desktop version. Which is also annoying.

Reviewed on 4/29/18 9:08 PMWikipedia put out a new iOS update in the last few days and I love it. Wikipedia is a form of library to me, and although it has had a decent search capability, it has been lacking insofar as personalizing the organization of previously read articles, or, articles that I want to read in the future. The latest update solves that problem by providing tools to allow for categorizing bookmarks, and, for syncing bookmarks amongst devices (e.g. iPhone and iPad). Now that search engines are becoming a shitstorm-combo of advertising and poorly curated information sources, I’m turning to Wikipedia as my go to information resource. Lastly, I’m not a philanthropist by any means, but Wikipedia is one organization that I enjoy supporting. It will be a sad, sad day if the organization ever has to go commercial.

This is frustrating because I constantly have to reload a page I’ve been reading and scroll down where I’d stopped earlier, just to find my place again. In other words, the app resets itself every time you momentarily switch to a different app (even without closing the Wikipedia app). I find this new change in behavior frustrating, today the least. That being said, it's a good starting resource but I wish there was a way to back up bookmarks So that if the app is deleted you don't lose all the pages you were working on. My thinking is, and I could be wrong, instead of having to ask for donations, why not just have a small charge to purchase the app? It's possible that, because Wikipedia is an organization, they aren't allowed to charge for the app. In that case, I suppose that it's best to ask for a donation. In any case, it's not mandatory, but it is nice to be able to donate. I am hoping that Wikipedia will be around forever. Thank you, Wikipedia and Wikipedia developers.

Uso Wikipedia a diario y me encanta. Except I have noticed that too many non critical thinkers do not have much experience, but discount the encyclopedia outright as “teachers” not recommending the site to “students”. Since I have been given gifts of critical thinking from my parents and siblings and experience, and reviewing data, it is almost always a direction I would take that if someone said not to do XYZ .. and especially, in this case, not to read or use such, it is precisely where I would go to start a search. It’s not app where you can go to home page and see interesting article. You need to search article which you need so you need to know its name. It is not a news app, yes it has a news section, but there are not much news and it is very difficult to find news on a particular topic in which you are interested, for example, there you can filter news by country but results will be really bad. It is not news app, but it’s good source of information. This app also like the website supports many languages. It’s an international app. Full list of supported languages you can find in the app description. But some people say that Wikipedia is not accurate source of information. Partially I agree with this statement because anyone can edit or create an article in Wikipedia, so for scientists this source is not good. Also in different languages this app has different articles with a little bit different information. OK, let’s summarize, this app is the best in its class of apps where you can find information about different topics. In my opinion Wikipedia app is very good. I like it!

Reviewed on 1/22/18 6:57 AMI’d like to see my local view history and bookmarks/saved pages behind a Touch ID authentication. Along those lines, it would also be cool to have a web browser-inspired “private mode”. In that mode history and caches would not be retained on the device. Great app. Thanks for considering these features.

Reviewed on 1/18/18 4:16 PMAlthough my iPad is up-to-date with iOS 11.2.2, some searches on Wikipedia seem slow, stalled even, since the Wikipedia update a week ago. For just one example, search results for David O. McKay are immediate, but search results for his niece Fawn M. Brodie are stalled. A faithful Wikipedia patron, I'm not about to abandon this ever-before reliable source ... just hoping the glitch is quite temporary!

Reviewed on 1/11/18 9:00 AMI use Wikipedia almost every day. I mostly like to read for fun. But, I have learned a lot of information that I normally would have known nothing about. The app runs great and I have never encountered an issue with it. The app really surprised me with how great it runs and all the cool features it offers compared to the website. Best of all. It’s free!

Andrew1243's Review of Wikipedia
Reviewed on 1/10/19 12:42 PMThis app provides information for almost every topic or idea in the world. The Wikipedia as we all know it. I do feel bad not being able to donate, but you should add a feature allowing even those that don’t pay to contribute. Rather than adding ads, (something I wouldn’t mind) perhaps you can make it the choice of the reader to set themselves a fixed amount of ads to view in compensation for funds sent to the Wikimedia organization. I would happily watch a reasonable amount of ads on both the app and site with ad banners to fun an excellent source of information. Although schools say otherwise, Wikipedia is very accurate, and excellent for basic preliminary research.

Reviewed on 1/10/19 12:42 PMWhy do you have to scroll to the top every time you want to back up? You don’t need “Change Language” on the toolbar. That should be in settings or folded into the “Text Option” button. Put the “Back” button on the toolbar. Please.

Reviewed on 1/10/19 12:42 PMDownloaded the app and tried to make an account. Got a long error back filled with html garbage, but managed to read my IP range was blocked, and I needed to contact an admin to put in some account request. Total bs, I’ve never used this app before, and after this absurd error (please fix your error handling btw), I doubt I will again.

Reviewed on 1/10/19 12:42 PMI often find myself using Wiki on my IPhone. And it’s rather hard because I have to wait for loading and Chrome, etc. and I stumbled across this and i was very surprised to see this. This will come in handy. Thank you. I also participate in a game that requires you to find tech of a certain era, and which country you picked. So this will definitely help.
