Ultralingua Portuguese English App Reviews

I lived in Brasil 12 years and read/write/speak Portuguese. I'm familiar with most of the available dictionaries but have never seen one as good and as useful as this one. The conjugation option is particularly helpful. This is a quality product worth much more than the $20 price!

Have used daily for four months while working in Brazil and it's helped sooooo much.

Living in Brazil and had the false idea that the most expensive dictionary would be the best. I was way wrong! This dictionary is seriously lacking and often does not have what I'm looking for or gives a bad translation. I have another dictionary that was practically free and I use it more. Look elsewhere!

I want to buy this for other languages, it's really handy to have!!

Don't like it at all. Very limited. Hardly enough words. Mainly hate it because definitions are so skimpy. Want my money back.

App is great for anyone serious about learing portuguese, really easy to use and very intuitive. One star short of 5 bc it doesnt distinguish between portuguese portuguese and brazilian portuguese, please please please update and fix this there are some very distinct differences.

I originally gave this a good rating bit since studying and learning more português I found this dictionary to be seriously lacking. An entry will offer several possible translations without explanation. The dictionary tries to oversimplify the language and sometimes give you a misleading translation. Careful.

In the first week since purchasing this pricey app, here are the words I looked up but that were not listed in this dictionary: anzol (fish hook), arrai (ray fish, skate), comover (to move, to stir), ralar (in the colloquial usage meaning to exert onesself), paquerar (to flirt), iguaria (a snack, delicacy), sovina (mean), bitolado (narrow-minded), quitute (snack), guloseima (a rich snack), caule (stem), foods like moqueca, feijoada, vatapa... the list goes on. I wasn't looking to see what was omitted - these are just words that I came across in my Portuguese studies. Considering the high price, this app is in serious need of major updating, and despite some nifty features (a history of words looked up, verb conjugations), I cannot recommend it. At all.

I bought this dictionary because it was probably the first available for the iPhone and it also always shows up first in searches for Portuguese-English dictionaries. I spend a lot of time in Brazil and having a dictionary on the iPhone is an enormous convenience. But I often find serious problems with the entries in this app: (1) often I can't even find the words that I am looking for, encountered in Folha de Sao Paulo or some revista about the novellas. In other words, palavras that should be in a useful dictionary. (2) many of the definitions offered are too brief and misleading or offer only one meaning when several can be found in other dictionaries (eg the iPhone Aurelio). Sometimes it actually seems to be just plain incorrect. What is strange is that Ulta-lingua offers the excellent Collins dictionary at the same price. they should simply remove this dictionary from their catalog and stick with their much superior alternative The app does offer conjugation of verbs however, and this is very useful but this same feature is available in the Collins dictionary also.

This ap saves a lot of time over using a paper dictionary, but I find only about 75% of the words I'm looking for and some of those I do find, do not have the appropriate definition. I am taking a Portuguese class, so am not looking up exotic words. I love the features though - it has some really clever usability. Just wish it were more complete and offered an audio pronunciation. I also wish they had a feature comparison of this ap and the more expensive ap. Not sure it's worth the money.

Recently moved to Brazil and learning Portuguese. Don't listen to the reviews that complain about the price. I am using this program everyday and it is very useful. It is a very powerful tool if you are serious about learning portuguese and you are in Brazil. I don't carry anything else around and I use it for translating texts. It is a great layout and has a separate section for verbs with conjugations in all tenses. I have spent a lot of money on tools to help learn portuguese and this is by far my most favorite one. It does not have every word I have looked up but it does have most of them.

I've bought electonic Portuguese to English translators before that were by comparison to this useless. Even the ability to translate slang is above average compared to a traditional dictionary. I use this app all the time when practicing reading portuguese and it has proved invaluable; I'm too lazy to give most apps reviews but this one deserved props.

I had the Collins Portuguese-English dictionary and thought it missed words sometimes, so I bought this on the recommendation of one Kit Eaton in the New York Times. I'll give her a piece of my mind also. This dictionary lacks many very basic words and mistranslates others. Today I found an entry duplicated. Is no one proofreading? I'm going back to Collins and will attempt to get my money back from the iTunes store, good luck with that.

You guys just update it, way to go! Now I can find almost every word that I look for and much easier way, great job!

This is an excellent app, I do recommend it, it's the best of it's kind to things would make it perfect to me. 1. Be able to add your own words, so when you find something missing and have to look elsewhere to find it you can then add it so you can keep everthing in one place and improve it over time. 2. The ability to sync with the desktop app. Since the desktop app has the ability to add more words already I need to keep them in sync.

A rip off. Many common words missing. Poor translations. Really disappointing especially given the price. Don't buy! Don't buy!

Shortly after buying my iPhone two years ago I bought the Ultralingua Portuguese-English dictionary app for it. Although I was hesitant given the price, it turned out to be a well-spent $20. The dictionary quality itself is as good as a medium to large-sized dictionary (not as good as the two-volume reference dictionary I have), but the UI is what makes it worth it -- making it easy to switch between definitions and verb conjugations -- everything is linked the way you want it to be. And they have made regular updates to the app as needed. When I bought my iPad, I was very pleased that they turned their dictionaries into "universal" apps so it had a special UI for the iPad without requiring a separate purchase. I can't recommend this app enough.

I got this before a recent trip to Brazil, and I was disappointed in how many times I tried to translate a word and didn't find it in the dictionary. I also was disappointed it didn't have the gender of the word (masculine or feminine) - at least that I could find. On the other hand, it does a great job with all the verb conjugations - that part works really well. And it is nice that it's a complete package - you can use it without having to have any connection (wi-fi or otherwise) to the phone.

It serves well the purpose of a bilingual dictionary, as well as verb conjugator, with ease of use. My one criticism is that it does not always say whether nouns are masc/fem in Portuguese -critical information for agreement.

I just installed the new patch and I can officially say I have an electronic Portuguese-English Dictionary. I had to wait a few weeks but I definitely got my monies worth with this app. Ultralingua, Inc. slapped it out of the park with this one. ********************************************* Good Enough - Very Promising! (v1.2) I am almost at the intermediate level of Brazilian Portuguese and have two (2) critiques regarding this application. 1. There should be two versions of this app.- European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese. There are distinct differences between the two that the lazy and non-serious learners will never appreciate. European Portuguese differs from Brazilian Portuguese the same way British English differs from American English. 2. There are two and four letter words that are missing from this app that are building blocks for a strong Portuguese foundation. I found it interesting that when I attempted to type in the word futebol which means soccer, the word f**k came up. It was then I realized I inadvertently selected English instead of Portuguese in the lookup field. My point is, Ultralingua, Inc. went through the trouble of cataloging a word that didn't need to be referenced and excluded thousands of other words that could be stored electronically as the Webster Dictionary app. In short, if this app were free I would give it five stars and insist on Ultralingua, Inc. excepting some of my money. But at $20 USD I don't feel ripped off, but expect I will get my monies worthy in future upgrades and versions.

This used to be a great app. The latest update was an attempt to add some stylization. What it did was ruin the UI and impact the utility. Positive Notes: Extensive dictionary. Conjugation feature is handy.

I need say only nice and amazing.

1) Lots of missing words, as other commenter noted. I just open one page of normal children's book in Portuguese and here we go: susto (fright), descolado (cool), aquentar (bear, cope), aspersor (sprinkler) and so on. 2) For words that are there, they use highly obscure synonyms. Don't get me wrong: although I'm not native in English, I read New York Times without strain. But ultralingua's translations always confuse me. Ensopar (to drench) is translated as (douse, sop up). Enganar (to deceive) - (bamboozle, beat, betray, etc). Tirar (to take away) - (draw up, ease someone of, extract, get off, etc). 3) As if #2 is not enough, instead of two-three closest translations, they put ten, all of which are only slightly related to original word in Portuguese. (see some examples above) Well. Although we've entered computer age long ago, paper dictionaries still win.

There are two updates I would like to see. First, I would really like to see medical terms put in. Imagine when you are sick and don't have the words to understand what is going on. Second, I would love for the verb to conjugate directly from the search. Currently, when you find a verb you have to retype the verb in the -ir search. It would save time if I didn't have to retype the verb I had just found. Otherwise, I love this app. I am fairly fluent in Portuguese and am currently living in Brazil, so this app is so helpful for the words I don't know. I also love the verb conjugation. Thank you.

I'm in Brazil right now learning Portuguese and I was so lucky to have found this app for my iPad. It really has made looking up words so much easier and I feel really lucky to have stumbled upon it. I have been surprised at how much more than just a simple dictionary it is. My Favorite Features: - Verb conjugations. It is so simple to look up an infinitive and then scan through all the verb tenses. - Flip back and forth from English to Portuguese. I need to do these all the time, and this program makes it so easy. - Click on words in definitions to expand to the full entry. This is helpful since in reading definitions I often find other words I need to know.

I am going to Brazil soon so I bought it. I love it. Nice interface and very easy to use. I recommend it! Buy it! You won't regret it.

This app is great. I use it every day. It is well designed and it is faster to use than my paper dictionary. But I also find myself regularly resorting to my conventional dictionary to find more detail or examples. I would be very happy to pay double the price of this app to have the amount of information that can be found in a large dictionary.

I was in Brazil recently and found this app invaluable. I took a few portuguese classes and even the teacher thought the brazilian dictionary was really good. I was constantly using it to figure out with my Brazilian friends a work here or there. It's not a translator but definately an excellent tool.

muito bom o aplicativo! o dicionário tem cada palavra que eu poderia precisar. os operadores de ultralingua são super inteligentes, e eu adoro todos os seus produtos. o dicionário em espanhol também é muito bom. obrigado, ultralingua pelo melhor aplicativo no meu iPod. this is a great dictionary with a huge variety of words. every word I have tried to look up is on here, and I want to thank ultralingua for such a great app. I haven't found a dictionary even half as thourough as this on the iPod. and I love the fact that it doesn't need Internet access. really great app :] muito bom, e muito obrigado!

This app is really handy to quickly translate words on the fly. I am glad that it is on my iPhone, because now I have a complete reference book in my pocket, wherever I go. Although I am fluent in both English and Portuguese, there are always those words that escape me in conversation, most commonly when referring to technical, academic, political, scientific, or other complex subjects. Sometimes explaining "around" the word is more challenging than getting the direct translation. Parabens, Ultralingua e obrigado pra este applicativo no meu iPhone!

If you are studying Portuguese in school this app might be useful, if you are traveling and want an app to help with translation go elsewhere - a simple phrasebook is far superior.

I tried everything but this app is locked on portrait mode now! I can't use it on landscape mode anymore! And my orientation is not locked!!! It's a terrible bug for a $19,99 app!!!

at 20 bucks, this is a really good price. it's so nice to have. i just sold my 501 portuguese verb book and pocket dictionary because i don't need them anymore now. i don't have their desktop software, so i don't have that to compare it to, but this already does more than my other books combined. i have an iphone, but i'm in brazil right now, so it usually doesn't have internet access, so i love being able to use this whenever. i'll probably get the spanish-english and english dictionary as well since they dropped the price.

I have had this app for several years, and it keeps getting better and better. As an American living part-time in Rio studying Portuguese, I recommend it highly both for quick translations and for studying the incredibly complex Portuguese verb conjugations. Amazingly you don't need WiFi - it's all in your device. So no more little dictionaries in your pocket. Great personalized support from friendly techs. Love it!

I purchased this for language help while traveling in Brazil. There is little in the way of useful phrases and those are difficult to find. It gives many results for translating a single word with no help in determining which word is appropriate for the given context. $20 wasted.

Um this program is great except for the fact that there are barely any pronunciations... The few that are there are in Russian or some other foreign language that is neither Portuguese nor English!!! What the heck? Thank God my husband speaks Portuguese and can help me out, but what about those who don't have that kind of luxury??? Great app. besides the pronuciation issues!!! Almost every word I look up is in there.
