I’ve bought and paid for all of the features of paper that are now subscription. I just re-downloaded the app to realize that everything I’ve paid for since paper was released is now blocked behind a subscription model. This app is great and pioneered lots of great interactions, but offering a subscription for static features I’ve already paid for makes this app not worth it.
Kaitimont's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/29/18 12:49 PM
I really like this app for doing simple illustrations and penmanship. But this would be so much better if it had a scale and rotate tool especially if you pay a “premium” price for it.
MKE Badger's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/29/18 12:49 PM
I got paper as soon as I first heard about it. I loved it so much for its simplicity and accessibility. It was such a great tool to quickly jot down ideas. I quickly bought their stylus. I used this app for a huge amount of the conceptual development of my thesis project. Since then they got rid of the idea sharing aspect, which I loved. And now they have started putting all the new content they develop behind a subscription. Procreate is a better drawing app, and concepts is frankly far superior now too. If you want to spend $24 (two years of pro for paper) you can unlock basically everything you’d want from either of the other two and be done with it. The only reason I’m keeping my rating at 3* is because the app, at its core, is still very close to the app I loved years ago. But I don’t use it anymore. I still open it periodically to see if the developers have wised up... but so far no luck. I’ll stick with the bevy of superior apps I’ve found since paper that aren’t trying to force me to keep spending my money to use the same tools for an app that is largely unchanged from their original concept (with many of the changes they have actually instructed making the product worse imo). Long story short... if you want a good drawing app look elsewhere. There are many superior options available that are cheaper to boot.

As a teacher, I’m constantly writing in the board. This app has saved me from turning my back on my students when teaching. I project the iPad screen and they follow along. I also can upload images and annotate on them which is fantastic when using maps, charts, etc... I also use it asa digital planner. I upload calendar templates and can use it instead of a paper planner that I would need to remember to carry around. I LOVE THIS APP!

Downloaded because I thought it was associated with the Dropbox app, and at first I really enjoyed futzing around with it because it's a very nifty interface. But they hardly give you a taste of the functionality in the free version and I'm not about to shell out the kind of money they're asking for in order to see how I like the full app. It might be a wonderful "pro" version, but they should really check out the competition, since there are several with very similar functions that give you a much deeper look into the tools and settings. I think there's a lot of potential in the way the notebooks are organized, but these days, you have to get more than a mere glimpse before you should be expected to hand over that level of subscription commitment.

EleventyOwlFan's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/23/18 12:41 PM
Hi, I use this app constantly but I would really like it if you could automatically see the date on each drawing. I like to keep things organized, and knowing the dates of my art is really important to me as an artist. If the developers could please integrate an automatic date system (which activates the minute you create a canvas), that would be the best thing ever! I would also like to see my journals displayed in a list form rather than just carousel, and I’d love if you had the option to turn the grid dots off when you zoom into a drawing. They are kind of distracting. I am a non-pro user and if you could make these adjustments to the app for all users, pro or not, it would ramp my three stars up to five. I never use any other drawing app, but the better features would really increase my use of it. Thanks!

Bought Pencil and Paper when they were a twinkle in the app stores eye. App cost, what? $20 back then? It was “app” cheap. It was a one time purchase that included tool sizes and iCloud saving. What happened? It’s not worthless but it’s a toy app now rather than usable for design work without letting the company reach into my wallet regularly. I’m actually fine with that pricing model but give me something that actually makes sense, something that YOU have to pay for repeatedly. I don’t want to call this a cash grab but it sure looks like it.

I was a huge fan of this app from the get go telling all my artist friends to get it too. I bought brushes from the beginning before they were made free. I understand the need to add a subscription, but even with the subscription I lost the ability to to customize my own journal. All of them look the same now and the colors offered even in the pro version are not enough choices. Honestly until that feature comes back this app will continue to be a disappointment to me. Furthermore the fact that the written part covers half the image in the thumbnail version is also frustrating and incredibly unnecessary. Please make the changes all of us are asking for.

I bought the essential pack at full price and then fiftythree gave it away for free. Now they want the user to sign up for a fee subscription for essentially the same app. It was a clever way to get away from one time purchases to long term, recurring minor transactions which will likely fly under the radar. In complete disclosure, I will say the app is fun for play/experimentation/creation and could be a functional tool for some’s productivity management. It was worth the 6.99 for a one time purchase in 2013. It most certainly will not be useful enough for any subscription fee. You will do much better with your own integrated productivity management tools. Look elsewhere for a really good sketch app.
me.me's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/2/17 7:33 PM
I have been using Paper for many years and enjoyed the functionality so much that I paid for it originally. With this update the creators have taken away several features such as custom covers for the journals and the ability to duplicate sketches for progressive work. I am upset that they destroyed the cover work I had done previously when I updated to this version. The least they could have done would have been to leave it alone and charge me in the future for doing new ones. This is especially wrong since I paid for their app back before it became free. There is likely a class action lawsuit here. Basically they removed features and now want to charge to get them back. As many reviewers have pointed out there has to be a better way forward that allows for revenue while respecting their current fans. Will start looking for a replacement for my design work.
JohnCorb's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/2/17 7:21 AM
I noticed that Paper became faster with new update, I’m using Apple Pencil on iPad Pro 12.9” 2017 and it almost feels like real paper now! That’s very cool! The main downside (apart from incredible number of visual bugs, screen stutters, freezes and disappearing images and album covers that I guess you’re fixing) is that I can’t rotate pictures anymore! I’m using the thumbnail view (instead of controversial moleskine), half of my images are vertical. In the previous version there was an option to easily rotate any image 90 degree. Now it’s disappeared! Old images are rotated but I cannot rotate the new ones, they look like they lie on their sides. Please fix it guys, I’m your paying Patron and with your minimal set of features it’s very damaging when you remove existing ones that are left!

The sketch select interface animations works not smoothly (about 30 FPS) and have a big lag (animation starts with a 500ms timeout after a swipe) on my iPhone 6s which has a great computing power onboard. I have only the initial sketches. How can the developer ask money for it?

journals are back, but I can’t customize their covers. journals are back, but I can’t arrange them. the tool drawer is taller because the swatches are on top—that’s great that I can get at all the tools now, but not that great with a fatter drawer ... why not make the tools smaller? the swatches are smaller. I’ve been using Paper for 5 years and bought all the tools before they were free, but this is the first update that has made me frustrated enough to make a point to downgrade a 5-star app.
Krakowsta's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/2/17 6:16 PM
I use paper 53 a lot as a way to make okay digital art before I can get a better art program, but this new design is so frustrating to do anything! My biggest problem with the new design is that when sketching you can not resize, move, or delete a picture once it is placed as a canvas, which seems to be the only way to upload pictures in a sketch, so good luck trying to use a reference picture or tracing over a rough sketch! This new design is meant to seem natural, like a real sketch book with pages, and sure it looks nice, but once you try to do anything it just becomes tedious and frustrating! Please go back to the previous set up.

Change to subscription model is an awful idea and doesn’t fit your product. I’ve already paid for what used to be a whole different app and I’d like that back... Can’t trust developers over long term since features get randomly dropped in "upgrades”. If you want pro subscriptions you should add real value and not purposefully remove previous functions. I can’t even tell my journals apart - seriously? All my Portrait images are now sideways! Turn iPad around, still sideways! The return to journals and simplicity is a good move but combined with the subscription product strategy and dropped features the app now has critical flaws. Finally this is sad because Paper had real insight and real fans initially. By the actions the company has taken you’re just making your fans look for alternatives. Just look at the ratings over time.

Paper was, once, my favorite (paid!) creation tool on the iPad. It used to support responsive and low-latency drawing, and had a really versatile set of options. One feature that the original version of paper had was allowing your created notebooks to have custom covers. With the December 2017 update, we now have the option of paying $5.99 every six months for such features as “unlimited color swatches” (previously included with the pro purchase, but removed) and “custom notebook images” (previously an included, but removed, feature). I understand that software funding is a brutal business these days, but I feel like the rug has been pulled out from under me, and the new subscription model feels extortionate. Imagine if a mandatory Apple update included the feature “$3.99 per four months: visit unlimited web pages in Safari, and unlock the “emoji” keyboard.” That is how I feel about this once-great creation tool. I strongly urge you, reader, to look elsewhere for your drawing needs. Who knows what the next version will bring; maybe you will be forced to pay a mere $3.49 for every 100 uses of the paint brush tool,” or maybe there could be a “loot box” that gives you 50 uses of a random drawing tool. Looking forward to the future, where every app is demanding a “minor fee” for previously included functionality. Please also note that my previous purchase of this app has now been totally nullified by this slower update.

I love the layout and entire concept of this app. They have truly embodied the genuine notebook- feel which reflects In what they have now and also what they plan to offer as they progress through development. I truly hope they stick to their word and do a good job adding on the features promised. I am sure they will DONIT well. ALSO!!! I don’t would like to formally state my request for the ability to order actual real like notebooks made from the exact one we created with this app. PLEASE PLEASE ADD THAT FEATURE!!! Anyway, thank you and keep up the good work.

The good: The journals are back! Also, the tools now rotate with you. The bad: I originally paid for this app when it first came out. Now the I have suscribed, I no longer have a paint palette, the photo upload feature has completely changed and been made fairly useless to me. Basically, I have paid for less. I will give this developer a little time to rethink this and put things right, but if they don't, I am gone. I use this app for work and I need to start looking for a different app right away. Sadness. I really hope they make this right.

These guys are absolutely horrible to the people who originally believed in their product & supported them by purchasing tools. I know I’m not the only one in this boat who bought Paper53 before their UI design snafu & before their business strategy reassessments. Don’t bother with this app, in the end it’ll disappoint you. They’ll eff with the UI and make it a totally different app from what you grew to love. Or eff with what you came to expect from your money. (I’d love mine back). I bought Paper 53 years ago. I loved it. Then they completely changed the UI from simple journals to stacks. Bad move. Way too un-intuitive and complex. They made it free for everyone?!?! What a rip!!! I deleted the App. I check it out again. Still bad UI & now subscription model. What a rip! I deleted the app. Again. Then I see they go back to journal format, like they originally had. I check it out. And they want me to pay a subscription for journal covers? What a rip!! When I first bought the app, I was able to have any cover I wanted to. Now I’m not?? What a rip!! Paper 53 developers, if you want higher ratings, screw whatever enhancements you have down the pipeline. Realize you should treat your (original) users better. You guys have some great strengths, I love the tools and their responsiveness. But, really, you’re jerking ppl around.

I downloaded and started playing with this app when it was highlighted one day a year or two back, I thought it had all these features then but I use a few different apps to tinker with. I am a hobbyist currently. Now it has changed a bunch and I feel a bit used since the core-included functionality seems lessened. I guess for the money it doesn’t seem worth an expensive subscription with so much stuff that it will EVENTUALLY include - “coming soon” it says. I just can’t use this app effectively with its current free offerings and it is too expensive to hope it becomes worth it.

This is the first review I ever wrote on the App Store. But you made me so mad I can’t ignore . I downloaded your app from the start. I paid for premium features. But you greedy. You lured me to “upgrade to the new redesigned app” just to take away features and try to force me to pay again, now on a subscription basis. All my journals are now black. You took away the cover feature and made it “pro”. It is not easy to gain a supporter. It is very easy and swift to lose one. Guys, I’m bailing out... bye bye

Grateful Dent's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/2/17 3:57 AM
For years, every new version of 53 Paper has added features and value for me and my team, and although there are indeed some nice additions to this version (e.g. graph paper grid) within the first 20 minutes of playing with it (including the paid Pro add-on) I noticed several capabilities that I no longer had... hopefully these can be chalked up to learning curve... 1. I can no longer customize my journal cover with a picture making it a visually distinctive way to identify each one (e.g. picture of daughter, son, team, company X, etc.) 2. I can no longer import a photo and shrink it as part of my drawing... it now has to be the entire background. 3. When ‘throwing away’ shapes with a single swipe it did not seem to work as well on the right side of the screen. 4. I can no longer have a drawing with notes... it appears to be either one or the other. 5. I cannot find a way to delete a card from grid mode, I have to be in journal mode. 6. The rendering speed of the updates seems slower than before, and on a few cases it was quite noticeable. Likely not a huge issue, but not helpful. I will keep playing around with it as I hope the issues are on my side. Michael

Subscriptions? If you have already paid for all of the IAPs in the past, and the Pro features have shown up (as they should), should we expect them to go away in 6 months? I don’t want to go any farther than that with a review since it makes a huge difference. Hopefully this is a grandfather clause and prior Pro users won’t be affected, but all things (and other apps) considered if we are ... ??
Blk Horizon's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/2/17 3:38 PM
I’ve been a longtime user, and Paper is one of the things that brought me to the iPad. It’s a high quality application that I used to use constantly, however I was extremely disappointed to see that many common free features that users have had access to for years have been pointlessly removed to increase the number of pro-subscribers. If you want more users or income you should maybe consider introducing new features that make it worth paying for an upgrade, as opposed to removing old ones and trying to charge for them again. Before this I was considering purchasing a pro account. However now I would rather give my money to one of the many alternative apps offered by developers with more transparency and fairness in their pricing models. I hope you consider remedying this situation since I truly think your app can be great.

Please bring back the ability to use your own photos/drawings for the journal covers. Keeping them out in favor of Paper’s subscription ‘designer’ covers is weak sauce. Also, still needs an in-app backup feature to 3rd party cloud storage providers.

Update 12/1/18: Sketch books are back...but No covers for them - unless you pay No more unlimited colors - unless you pay Undo still takes you out of your creative flow No privacy for your drawings Hey developers, your suppose to make this app MORE useful, not less. There is MUCH more to complain about, but I just don’t care any more. I’ve given up on ever seeing anything like the 2.5 version. Until that’s a possibility you have lost me. One more thing - you used to have 4 to 5 star ratings. Now you have 2 to 3. You are going in the wrong direction, but I guess as long as your making money - taking away functionality and privacy - that’s okay. ——————————————————————- Who in the happy hell gave you permission to take away my sketchbooks? Who asked you to take all my drawings and toss them into piles on the floor? I understand the new interface is a benefit for the iPhone app, but it's execution on the iPad is messy. This app no longer feels the same because it's not the same. It's not about creation it's now about making lists, editing photos, multitasking, and doing 1 million other things. Paper was about creating - pure and simple. Paper was about fun. Now Paper is about getting things done. If I wanted another to do app, I would've downloaded the billions of to do apps that are available already. Messing with the two finger undo for rewind was a mistake. You've made it so you have to tap your photo before you can use it. Why would you change that? It was perfect the way it was. It kept me in my creative space. Now the flow is interrupted. Until you at least bring sketchbooks back I'm giving this one star. If you haven't upgraded to the new Paper by 53 and you really like having two finger undo, magnifying glass, sketchbooks and everything that made Paper, well, Paper, then don't upgrade. I'm sorry I did and I probably won't use the app again.

FiftyThree has made custom notebook covers and content sync are “new” features with a premium subscription! And we are supposed to be excited by this. Well not me because I HAD custom covers and contact sync before. Now opened their app to find that all were removed and the notebooks now have black covers. Why not leave what people had, and charge them for new ones going forth? Also, every last cheesy iOS app has iCloud sync for free. These changes are not worth paying for. Actually, the “new features” are what I already paid for. You basically took something away from what was already paid for. Totally shady. I’m not paying premium. I have Evernote if I want blank covers. And there are FAR superior drawing programs. You had a nice simple thing, good for jotting down quick sketches, but you got lazy and greedy. You could have maybe gotten creative and actually innovative, but this was a lazy money grab and left me feeling sour towards the developers. If they had done something really worthwhile, I might have thought about a subscription, I bought their stylus and am drawing again. Premium subscriptions should add functionality and appeal to the already standing app, not subtract from what was there already to force you to maintain what you already had. Nice try, but I won’t be subscribing. In fact you made this USELESS for me on my iPad Pro or anything more than an individual device, so I will be deleting it. I’ll stick to Procreate for drawing and Evernote for my notebooks- which I use more frequently anyway. Evernote is worth the money.

Better late than never. Took them three years to get back to the proper journal look. Why are original features missing that I paid for ($)(reported) We were able to import our own photos for journal covers. This feature should not be missing! Also the two finger time lapse backwards and forwards was genius. I still can not recommend this app until it is returned back to what I paid for. PS they pay system is unethical.

New subscriber here. A few things: 1. I want to be able to customize the journal cover 2. Some aspects are not user friendly. For instance I want the option to delete page in different journal perspectives 3. I would like for it to sync across devices. If I sign in to a different device I would like to access my work. And when I sign into my phone, it doesn’t recognize that I have a subscription. 4. why was the backup feature removed? It seems crucial. I want to give the app 4/5 stars but it is missing some very basic and fundamental features. Overall a very beautiful app. I am using it to replace my clunky paper planners.

Update 12/2: You have deleted bad reviews. I hope you will bring back the old way of Paper. A lot of people including me, are not happy with this new update. I won’t call this an upgrade. Idea: how about something you could add icons, texts on the drawings? The previous one, text could be added only at the bottom. Look at Procreate. It is something where you could do a lot of things, but I choose to remain on your app due to the not a lot of things that create confusion like procreate has too many brushes. And please bring back the old logo. This doesn’t look anything familiar anymore. I introduced this to my then 6 years old. I don’t think you will run out of customers by keeping the old one and adding something that will make people love to buy it. Don’t do subscription. Maybe one time purchase. Look at Typorama and videorama. Don’t do something thAt could lead to your extinction. I used to like Lifehack.org but they charge subscription now for something I could find somewhere else. You are no exemption. Thanks Btw, i hate this journals. I prefer to have the flat, non flipping sheets. Why would you sketch on a journal? I know there is an option to use flat but that is time consuming. I am not feeling entitled. I just couldn’t take these unnecessary bells and whistles you’ve added. You don’t have to post this rant. I just think this is how I let you know. When people say something, it means they care. It is like complaining about modernizing an antic museum. I could have just let it pass and move on to the next app. 12/1 I hate the update. It is hard to navigate. When I am inside one notebook or shall I call it folder, it is hard to go to another folder. It is very frustrating. I like the simple old Paper, where I could create another page and then crumple if I need to. I might have to look for another note/sketch app. I couldn’t stress myself more with this app. Very hard to maneuver around. They should make updates like more brush sizes or pens. But what did they do? They changed the logo and maybe added or changed the look of one pen. What happened to the promise that Paper will always be free? Getting poor? What are you offering for subscription is free on other app or just one time purchase. How ridiculous of you to treat your loyal fans like this! Charging monthly subscription to be able to use a designed notebook cover? I can only choose solid color and no option of adding my own design.

The new version of Paper, 4.0, has taken over my iPad Pro. I use it as both a notebook for my studies, as well as a sketchpad for my ideas. Highly recommended!

Hope you can trick some people into paying a subscription for the most basic features. I paid for more tools originally and that was fine, and now I have a bland free app I will just delete. Stop with the negative, just make it great, charge a fair price to buy the app and no one wants to pay a subscription for a drawing app. Good luck... you are going to need it.

With the new update, I can’t move or delete photos, also when I zoom in I can’t move the screen to a certain place. So I need a fix. The older version was better than this

Dec2017: Blowing off the cobwebs, I was pleasantly surprised to see the old interface return in this latest update along with a slew of minor improvements that actually make the app usable again after I’d abandoned it due to such a horrible redesign. I’m actually considering coming back to Paper but there are still several things that require attention before I would ever recommend it to anyone again: - I’m not going to pay a subscription fee for something that doesn’t require it. If Procreate can thrive by making their app awesome, you can follow suit and make an awesome app. I’d even be happy paying a one-time fee for extra features as they’re released, but not a subscription after see how much of a mess you can make of something that was working. - The most important feature that needs to return is the ability to set our own custom covers, which was a STANDARD feature in the original. The ‘Pro’ covers don’t relate in any way to the sketches I’d previously made and now all my old book covers are blank and indistinguishable as I scroll through them. Implement this again and I would start to feel like 53 cared about its customers again. Original Review: Haha they're asking for subscriptions now?? After destroying their once amazingly great app with their own hands, they're actually asking for more money?? The world moved on when you gutted your iPad app, we left for Procreate and other sketching/painting apps that actually care about their existing users. Studio53 can disappear into irrelevance because they already have.

I get that you guys need money and stuff but paying just to change brush sizes is just too much. This app is amazing and all but you can’t do a single thing without paying for the subscription. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t have the fee, I’m just saying that more things should be free. I really hope that you will consider this review , I don’t want to delete this app. I think this has great potential just change the payment stuff

I actually bought an iPad Pro just so I could use this app (I had switched to android for my personal phone some time ago but always missed this app) Paper by WeTransfer (formerly 53) combined with an Apple Pencil on a larger iPad is absolutely fabulous, flexible, and fun I am a creative thinker and artistic person in general, but I have never been very good at creating traditional hand drawn art work whether using digital tools or traditional ones Something about this app lets the creativity and beautiful drawings flow right out of me without significant effort... and somehow I almost forget that I’m using a digital device My favorite tool of all is the fill tool… It is worth subscribing to the plus membership just to get access to the amazing fill tool... seriously 🙌 I wish there was a little more control over layering… I find myself having to work in a specific order to get the in result I want, but perhaps the simplicity of the app is why I feel free to be so creative… I highly recommend you download this and give the pro or plus subscription a try for a few months… it can seem jarring to have to subscribe for what comes down to a dollar to a month to an app like this, but when you think about how much physical notebooks and physical tools would cost, it really is not a bad deal at all The best way to learn is to read blog entries and watch YouTube videos about other artists using this app… It is extremely powerful when you learn about all the hidden tips and tricks, but at first glance it can seem almost like a beautiful version of Microsoft Paint. In reality, it is much closer to a full-fledged professional tool than something simple like MS Paint, but you have to put in the time to learn all of the tips and tricks

Anyone who is using this app any got screwed over by this companies money grab, contact me to discuss a class action. Clearly FiftyThree sold out to a bunch of crooks. WeTransfer needs to be held to account. And their BS, “we built a new code base” does not wash. You create a new product SKU. You don’t steal from your existing customers. Apple should ban you.

jmob1234's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/15/18 12:41 PM
Great skeleton of an app though to really make me feel satisfied for a subscription based app... .... you’ll need to have something other apps don’t have. To make this app work, you’ll need to make the sketchbooks accessible to others with the app. If I can’t share my sketchbook or it can’t be viewed by someone when they are in the same city or general location—and them not having to go thru a bunch of hurdles to view it—then the subscription based app should be a one time purchase. I really, really love everything else about this app...but the feature that seems like it should be intrinsic to this subscription fee app is missing. This app has great potential! I will gladly pay double the current subscription fees if you do manage to add the described feature. Thank you for your work!

Unlike real paper, I can modify easily and maintain versions. I’m in love with this app and will probably upgrade after I explore the advanced features.

This has a great range of features, but often when you open a file you have been working on and your ipad is tilted, it will open your notes upside down and no flipping of your ipad will restore it to the correct orientation without force quitting the app and opening it again. As a result I quit using this and made the move to OneNote.

I love this app, I use it to sketch and send via e-mail to express ideas. I have used it everyday since purchasing the essentials pack AND the color mixing pack. I love being able to save custom colors!! So far I have not used my clunky black sketchbook and handful of pens, because this app is soooooo useful and I always have my iPad on me. I would love to be able to blend the watercolors better, but am finding the color mixing pack adequate. I would have given 5 stars except the update no longer allows me to save to photo album...

I recently got a new iPad. My old one was in terrible shape and couldn’t update Paper due to its software, so when I got my new iPad, I was thrilled to see what new features I could use with the new update! To my utmost disappointment, when I downloaded it again, instead of more features, there were less. Many of the basic tools I had loved using on my old iPad (templates, cut, fill, etc) were now gone, moved to the Paper Pro version only. I loved this app before, using it for scheduling and writing projects and just sketching in general, but now it’s forcing us to pay for basic features, just like all the other apps. I thought you were different, Paper—what happened?
QuirkyCarter's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/12/18 12:07 PM
I was an early adopter of Paper. I paid the $ to unlock everything way back when. I really feel like the practice of changing the monetizing method should be illegal or at very least not allowed by Apple... app developers should create a new app so those of us who already paid can still access the content. I know it’s a tricky issue and I do want to support developers. Problem is that when I “buy” something, I feel like it should be mine forever unless there’s a clearly stated time limit. Otherwise I can spend $ today and lose access tomorrow... that’s definitely not right. I guess what I’m saying is this - subscribe at your own risk because you have no way of knowing whether you will have access to your content or tools of this app for any length of time. I will definitely not be subscribing, as I have already spent enough money on this app.

This is a great app if you like simple clean lines and simple to use tools. Also it’s relatively streamlined and can perfect the shapes you draw with a rounding /straightening feature. I like the way notebooks open and close😄too. I use this app for schematics , children’s illustrations , cards & toons. If you’re looking for a drawing app that allows you to draw realistic portraits and reproduce textures of objects with complex tools and materials, and with professional illustrators layering tools, then this is not the app to use. This app works very well for drawing illustrations that are more conceptual in nature. Happy drawing!

I definitely am waiting for some more updates, shapes tool would be awesome and also a copy and paste tool. hopefully it won't cost anything because tools were expensive.... They should be free now. A layering tool would be great. And it would be cool if there was a oil painting available, or pastel oils, and like I said, the ability to be able to size the tools are great. I would like to be able to shuffle my journals around. Can that please happen?😁

The app is beautiful and very few note apps are beautiful. But, the developers are dogmatic about the formatting or the pages and the extremely limited functionality. Why can’t we resize the pages? Why can’t we organize the journals differently? Why can’t we zoom out to make more space or zoom in? It was an interesting app when using the pencil was novel but as a real tool it’s severely lacking and annoyingly limited.

I already bought most pro features when tools were the monetized aspect of the app 2-5 years ago. Now it seems the developers are desperate to keep going, as money dried up. I get that development costs money, but what have you done in the past two years? Mostly try to become a Evernote/OneNote competitor, adding in a bunch of undercooked features that took away from the simplicity of the original. $5.99 per month is a total rip off, I might have been ok with that ‘per year,’ but you guys just aren’t adding any real value here. In those two years you’ve ditched your journals only to bring them back without any character, unless you pay. That’s garbage. It’s like you took our money, about $15 for a premium app with added pro tools, then trashed the place only to bring it back as a ‘free-to-play’ model, where tools are there, but the soul is gone unless you pay monthly, MONTHLY - for a basic app! This was the wrong path forward. I just feel bad for the poor saps who will try the subscription, only to forget that they have it and pay tons of money over the next few years... it’s like AOL all over again.

I like that the journals are back but now you have to pay for features that were free before? Not worth it.
Shabudua's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/1/17 8:10 PM
In 2013, Paper was a near-perfect app. I gladly paid $9 for all the tools. Then they started messing with it. The killer was when they removed the Journal format, effectively making it an entirely different app than the one I paid out for. I felt cheated, and I’m not the only one. Cut to 2017...So now the journals are back! That’s great news! BUT... we can’t put our own images on the covers anymore? Why not? I loved that feature. Please give it back—and don’t try make me pay again for it 😉

I'm trying to see what the improvements are other than creating a continuous profit stream by 53. Let's take away the ability to change journal covers but charge to give access to additional ones. Up to now I have purchased the tools since as a whole the app has been better than other similar ones. I wonder how easy rolling the update back will be?
DtotheBS's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/1/17 7:46 PM
The recent update took this app from a 5-star to a 1-star. What happened to the spotlight feature? To adding a picture as a workspace, instead of as a "canvas background"? If there is any way to reinstall the older version, please let me know. Otherwise this free app isn't worth the download at any price.
D.G.R.B.M.J.3's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/1/17 7:32 PM
They took away the list of journals. Now you have to scroll through every book and pause on it to see what it is. Or as a custom cover image with Pro. But don’t think you can create your own cover with a freakin title on it. You are only allowed to use their stupid designs. Also Needs content sync for backups before it can really be a pro level journal tool and a Mac app to access notebooks and pull sketches into design programs easier. What a waste. The definition of regress.
chipodos's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/1/17 6:48 PM
•You’ve FINALLY restored the app features to where it was 2+ years ago—when we all loved it before you made huge changes. •53 is bringing back journals after countless people told you to over 2 years ago •You’re also bringing back journal covers—which used to be completely free in the older versions—and now you want me to pay $5.99 every six months... to RESTORE this app to where it was 2+ years ago? Having been one of the original people who ended paying about $12.99 for all the tools way back... No thanks. I would have GLADLY paid $5.99 every six months way back when, but those days are over. I am sad that this company chose the path it did. Maybe it had to. But from the overwhelming reviews we’ve all given for years, my guess is that someone wasn’t listening to reviewers... until now. I’m happily using another application now instead of Paper 53 (one that, among other things, includes multiple picture imports on each “page”). I won’t mention the other app here out of respect for the incredible app that Paper 53 used to be. Wish this story had a different ending. But it doesn’t. Makes me sad. :( Previous review from 2016: 53? I think this used to symbolize the 53cm measurement but now we know it's the number of micro/minor updates the company is trying to do in a year in order to wipe out bad reviews. It's getting ridiculous. I just wish that in one of these updates the company would simply say, "We're sorry. We messed up." Previous review: I used to use this app every single day multiple times in meetings and for ideas. My 53 Pencil was the only writing utensil I kept in my bag. Now I don't even know where the pencil is. Worse yet, I just don't need it anymore. :( Just cannot understand why the developers made the choices they did in all these latest updates in trying to move to the iPhone. Read the other reviews from people who know how great this app used to be. It's really sad. 53.... If the issue was profitability (hence the iPhone compatible version) I would have GLADLY paid 2x-3x the money to have improved vs overhauling the app. And you're getting 1 star because all these minor updates intended to wipe out bad reviews are really ticking those of us who helped get you to 5 stars before you sabotaged the app.

I see most complain about the subscription, I am not. If you want good software you can rely on, you need to pay. And Paper is not expensive at all for what you get. Now my main issue is that as a heavy user, Paper 4 is not good at all: it’s actually a downgrade. You get no new features outside the old notebook look (I didn’t care). But even that is not as good as before: you can’t put your own pictures or drawings as cover, only the ones provided by Fiftythree (even as a pro subscriber). So far downgrades from Paper 3: - Gestures are messed up: select instead of scroll, drag not detected, etc... - No grid when you zoom - No miniature when you zoom - No arrow mark when you draw lines - Auto shape is too aggressive - The UI overall is not intuitive. Ex: You can scroll the tools but there are literally no way to know it. If you rely on this tool daily, especially the thinking toolkit, do NOT upgrade and wait until they fix the issues (if they do). I will put back my rating to 5* if they fix it.

I've been a user since the beginning. I am an artist. I loved the interface with Moleskin and made a number of books (a couple are in the University of WA Special Collections). I bought the extra tools and felt they were worth it. I recommended it to lots of artist friends. Then they "improved it" and removed the ability to make books. It became a note taking app. Now they take away custom covers an institute a monthly charge. It's useless to me now. How disappointing.
justinleona's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/1/17 5:52 PM
Looking at the videos and descriptions I was hoping to be able to quickly draw technical diagrams, but was quickly disappointed realizing this is much closer to paint with shape recognition than gliffy with a stylus. Some key features features that would really help: - snapping new shapes to join existing figures. Something like drawing a ellipse in between parallel lines, then snapping together at the edges. - connectors that can easily allow adjusting linkages without redrawing existing ones

Basically they've brought back the old notebooks and now charge you a monthly fee for what was previously free. There's nothing Pro about the pro features. What a shame. If you're yet to update be warned, all your notebooks will look the same (no custom covers) unless you pay.

This app was great! It was easy to work with, you could add images underneath the art, you could move sketches from one page to another, and then you ruined it! You ruined it! I don't think I could ever draw the way I used to, i can't even add my signature! I hope you're happy with yourselfs...

I loved this, use it for work. But not really liking the new changes. Why is my color palette always resetting even within the journal I’m using it for? And it’s not easy to go from page to page anymore without marking up my page? Maybe I haven’t found the new trick to getting rid of the tools and bringing them back? I dunno, but these aren’t enough reason for me to pay for a subscription. I’ll most likely be looking for a new app to use, sadly this one WAS perfect.
Nova7o9's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/1/17 4:40 PM
December 1, 2017 Update I wish they would stop changing the format. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Now I have to relearn how to do everything that had become second nature to me, again. This is about the fifth time they've rehauled the interface. Though I do appreciate the addition of more customizable palettes, it's just frustrating that they moved everything around. Again. I've had this app for a couple years now and the creators are always making it better. The controls are easy to learn and super useful. I am a huge fan of the color mixer. If you like to draw or write by hand I definitely recommend this. Also, I use a stylus with a plastic tip so that it feels like I'm using a pen. Much better than using my finger. If I ever get their stylus I'll review that as well.

I am so glad the company brought back journals. I have been a long user of this app and have been pleased with the features and customer support for 5+ years. It was a no brainer for me to sign up for their pro subscription. I look forward to seeing their upcoming tutorials and feature updates. I also hope one day (soon) they will add layers. Paper Fifty-Three, if you’re reading this, please add layers to your app. Thank you!

I used to use this app for engineering. Since they introduced journal view I cannot show my drawings to my customers. Now everything looks like a kindergarten project. All I need is a app to take a picture and to draw into that picture. My Pro upgrade does not restore. I use Notability now.
Mella2134's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/1/17 4:04 PM
I hate the update.
Cole The Blue's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/1/17 4:04 PM
53 captured my heart with this app at first, got an ipad just for it... But one day they "updated" away a fan favorite book system, to a messy conjumbled view and ruined the one thing that made Paper something DIFFERENT. So many users want 53 to do one thing, bring the books back, and it seems they are just ignoring us... Its painful to see such a powerful artistic tool go down this route... Time to switch back to Bamboo Paper! ~ Updated 12/1/17 They did it! I gave up hope, but to my amazement they brought back the journals! It isn’t as great as before with having to pay for customization, limited customization even, but i will take this as a win! Great job 53!
ASloan93's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/1/17 3:15 AM
You couldn’t figure out a financial incentive for this app that didn’t involve removing a basic, simplistic, function that’s been free from the start? All my notebooks are black and indistinguishable. Their titles aren’t even visible unless they’re the selected notebook. You couldn’t have automatically given them separate colors, at a minimum? I am so absolutely, positively, sick and tired of this trend of removing basic simple features and slapping on a monthly service fee to access them. I haven’t, not even once, acquiesced to this horrible trend and I’ve abandoned multiple apps that have pulled this stunt. I really don’t want to abandon Paper, I’ve been there form the get go. I purchased all the tools, before they were free, because I wanted to support the devs. But I am sick of this nonsense. I’m not paying monthly service fees for alarm clocks, calendars, weather apps, and sketchbook apps. I simply won’t. I’ll be more than happy to pay a one time fee for a premium version, or multiple fees for various features, or even purchase yearly revisions, but I won’t pay for monthly subscriptions for the ability to distinguish which notebook is which. I’d also like to add that I see no option to delete individual pages. There’s no delete button on the card view, the page view, or in the settings button in the top right.

Nice work on the reboot there kiddos. My only issue is that the color picker is SO sensitive. I'm trying to set the swatches JUST right, and the act of lifting my finger off the screen invariably moves the "H" value. Maybe if we had an option to just enter the numbers? Beyond that, great work!

So, you got rid of my customized journals and then placed them behind a monthly paywall.… I don’t trust this developer any longer and won’t be risking spending any more time with this app in the chance they’re gonna extort even more money out of me. “Pay us or you won’t ever see your precious drawings again.” Honestly this feels like the way it’s going.

Thank you for putting the books back into the app. I’ve re-downloaded it and very happy to start over with this app after many years of mourning the loss of my little books. Cudos to the developers for listening to the many original users who asked for this. It seems perfect now. Old review: This used to be such a cute and unique app. I loved having my little books with my artwork on the cover all lined up in a row. Showing work by flipping through the book always made people say "Wow, what app is that?" So easy and simple. I really miss that! My advice, don't try to be all things to all people. Can we have the simple initial version back?
Mattathias.Phapp's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/1/17 2:07 PM
Sure, I liked free custom covers, but really, is that loss worth whining about? The ability to cut and paste between canvases is something I’ve wanted for ever! Will gladly pay for that. And soon we’ll get drawing lessons! 53 deserves to be in business. That means they need to get paid. A few bucks per year to ensure this WONDERFUL app sticks around? No-brainier, IMHO.
SimplyGrammatical's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/1/17 1:37 AM
The way it handles multitouch gestures (particularly undo) is horrendous when you NEED to zoom to draw something with any semblance of detail. The requirement of having a FiftyThree account is awkward and awfully executed. Get Autodesk Sketchbook instead if you call yourself an artist, amateur or otherwise.
Scurzuzu's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/1/17 1:31 PM
I thought you said if you had a Paper account prior to version 4 then you were grandfathered in to the so-called “premium” subscription stuff, but it looks like I’d still have to subscribe in order to customize my journal covers. That’s just straight-up ransomware behavior.
My Adverure's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/1/17 1:29 PM
First off, I paid money for the app. Then I have to turn around and have a membership to unlock the pro stuff.. such crap! Second, the pro stuff isn’t much better. I have searched the entire app and nowhere is the option to change the covers to something OTHER than a color. Not to mention, half the tools don’t work like they should. The instructions or help portion on any of this stuff is laughable at best! When I purchased this years ago, it was fun. Now it’s just crap! Maybe take some of the money you are constantly taking for your crap app and put it into the app to make it better?!

stresmom's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/1/17 1:26 PM
I used to love this app’s unique yet minimalistic approach to emulating paper and traditional writing/drawing tools on iPad. I’ve been using it since I got an iPad mini years ago and had been using it occasionally on my iPad Pro. The interface before the newest update to 4.0 was awful—a genuine attempt at an even more minimalistic interface, but too cumbersome to adjust to and it was irritating to navigate the toolbar at the bottom or to double tap to undo. Both of these have been fixed in 4.0, along with the brilliant notebook interface being returned. All that being said, however, I personally do not believe this app is worth a subscription. All that money adds up over time, and it’s really not worth it. Unlike Procreate (which actually only charges a one time fee, as of now) with its ability to import brush packs, rotate canvas, and of course, layers, this app has very simple, charming features that honestly, get kind of old after a while. Nothing sets it apart enough, in my opinion, to pay a 6-monthly fee for—especially since you originally charged me for the extra tools and the app itself at launch, both of which I obliged to. I appreciate your creative efforts and all the labor and imagination that went into creating this application, but I think you have still missed the mark by implementing a subscription service.

I don’t ever recalling updating to a new version that had less features than the previous version. The ruler is gone!!! No more drawing nice shapes, a feature I use on a regular basis. Upgraded to Pro before I looked at the new version, total waste of $6.99, (which is only good for six months). Can’t copy in one book and paste to another. Can’t add a picture to a cover of a journal, a feature that was available 2 versions ago; only a limited number of colors to add to the cover. Hopefully the developers will correct these issues. What a disaster!!!

This new update makes makes my sketches do a 180 and flip them sideways. They were never like that when they were cards. I hate how all the journals are in the same. color, too. It’s annoying. The scissors, paint roller, and line tool used to be free, but now you have to pay for them, and it’s stupid and unnecessary. But then again, the app was meh for drawing in the first place so SEE YOU LATER I’M SWITCHING TO MEDIBANG!

When I first paid money to unlock all of the Paper features years ago I did not imagine that those features would be removed in later versions so that I would have to pay to unlock them again. But here we are. Maybe you paid to unlock swatches and you enjoyed having custom covers on your sketchbooks. Now you have to pay again. Unlimited swatches and custom covers (among other features) are now part of paper pro which is a subscription model for this app. It was fun while it lasted but Paper isn’t fun anymore.
ZippyD22's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/1/17 12:49 AM
I've been using Paper for several years now and have a few hundred sketches, and I like the return to the old journal features. But the update removed a key functionality. In the past, one could put a photo in the background, resize and place it how you wanted it, and then use it to make a base sketch of the major features using the pen or pencil tool. Then you could just remove the photo and finish out your drawing. In the update once you load a photo you cannot get rid of it. You can load a different photo or template, but there's no way to clear the background. Furthermore when you load a photo it does not allow you to resize or place it in your image. To me this is a total dealbreaker, why would they get rid of this feature? I am hoping it is just a bug, but until feature is restored, the app is no longer usable for me. I also don't like that I am being charged for features that existed in the past, but that's another story.

I'm still using version 2.3.1. That was back when Paper was fantastic and the best natural media app in the AppStore. That was back when it looked like it was being developed to replicate a complete artist's studio in digital form. But then the powers that be decided to try and make it a productivity app, a notes app, a "let's milk the users for all they are worth" app and trashed it. Such great potential...lost...because of stupidity and greed. So happy I've never upgraded!

I loved this app, but I absolutely hate subscription models for software. “But wait!” You’ll say, “it’s only the ‘pro’ features!” I’m sorry, but it doesn’t matter. It shows that the developers are headed in the wrong direction, I’m not going that way, and I don’t want a future with them if that’s where they’re going. So, it’s time to say goodbye to this app. The next sound you hear is me deleting it.

Mina on iPad2's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/1/17 11:09 AM
I recall when this was my favorite drawing app because a group of artists found it challenging to draw without images dropped in the background, those were extremely fun times. I also remember having custom journal covers I truly loved (in the free version), and when that feature was taken away. That was when I stopped using Paper by 53. I came back to see if there were any improvements that would make me want to use the app again. I see custom journal covers are back but now I'd have to pay a subscription?! Everyone understands progress and paying for it but this is an old feature, how can you ask people who already used this feature to pay monthly to get it back? Was disappointed when you removed it and disappointed you brought it back as a 'pay for' perk. Not feeling the love 53, what a shame. I still find the idea of the app great but paying a subscription now for what I used to have? No way.
raist3001's Review of Paper By WetransferReviewed on 12/1/17 10:58 AM
Edit 11/17 So the new update to 4.0 reintroduces the original UI while again removing functionality. Now if you want to change covers, you need a subscription. I paid good money for functionality you REMOVED!! How do you think that’s fair????? I want my money back!! Just another nail in the coffin. Original As the true reviews have expressed.....this app used to be great. Pay heed to the negative reviews as they speak the truth. For all those who have paid for the app and used it extensively, these new updates that removed iPad functionality have forever destroyed the app and the developers credibility. Many others have already stated all the features lost to the iPad in favor of the iPhone integration. Instead of making a lite version for the iPhone where a project could be started and then picked up on the iPad, the not too Intelligent designers chose to abandon iPad support. Well, they succeeded in losing their credibility, their heart, their drive, and most importantly , their direction. What used to be a fantastic drawing app is now white noise amongst all the other apps looking to be a note taking app with doodle capabilities. Congrats on some of the most insane and disappointing decisions app developers could make. You sabotaged yourselves.
