The quality of thought and function going into this app is inspiring. I’m exploring digital art with the iPad Pro and apple pencil. I’ve downloaded quite a few different drawing apps and this one is standing out as something special. I’m going to explore more with the free version for now, but this one looks like a keeper.

Please add perspective grids... any drawing app especially digital ones, should by default have a perspective grid... not some work around , not a picture of a drawn out grid that we have to purchase that is “non interactive” but actual perspective grids. The lesser known and lesser equal apps even have them... and pretty decent ones. For this app to be geared towards architecture and design ..... it’s a no brainer. Once added I will gladly update my review. Thanks
Khenein's Review of ConceptsReviewed on 12/22/18 1:02 PM
My work varies from writing notes, screenplay ideas, plots, sketching, character design, and storyboarding and surprisingly Concepts fill in as a magical app to fit my needs. The current flow and pen responsiveness using my apple pencil is as good as paper to my view, with a little tweaking I managed to mimic my favorite felt tip pens I use with the ease and flexibility of a digital medium. The tools and options are good to my usage and I can see more features adding on regular basis which is very promising for an investment in an app like this. User support is phenomenal, which I experienced first hand. Issues are addressed and comments are taken seriously given proof of validity within the technical limitations of the devices. I’d recommend Concepts for anyone who’s taking notes, sketching and concept designing. It -by far- changed how I use my iPad. Things I would like to see for future updates: 1- Cloud integration, I’d love to have my files backed up to cloud services as I work 2- Stroke ordering - bring forward and send back within each layer.

Very well put together. Works great for line art. Very clumsy for painting. I’ve been doing line art with Concepts, and rendering with other apps.

It’s pretty rare for an application that does something so basic to really leverage being in a digital medium like Concepts does. Works super well and finally gives me the ability to individually modify strokes in a way I wish I could from the very first time I started drawing. Great work!

Okay I would sing this apps praise forever if I could!! It has an endless scrolling, quick rendering, the little palette up in the top left corn is is freakin life changing and brilliant, so many pages- even if it wasn’t in the free version- and simple but intuitive layout!!!! I love it. So much. Dont let the haters sway you
ilindsay's Review of ConceptsReviewed on 12/17/18 1:10 PM
This app is a must have for brainstorming and collecting ideas. The 'endless' paper format is awesome when you're at the cafe and cant have everything spread out in front of you. Everything is kept neatly in one app. There is one thing that I hope they implement in future updates; the ability to track where you draw. I love taking notes on it but sometimes, I get to scrolling and then cant find my way back to my note. I wish it could be incorporated in layers or a 'search for words' option where it can pull my notes and throw me back to where I was. Hopefully that make sense... lol Overall, this is great app. I cant remember how much I spent on it, but I would definitely buy it again.

P.mousse Esq.'s Review of ConceptsReviewed on 12/17/18 1:10 PM
Revisiting after long absence, I am delighted with the improvements of the latest upgrade. The UI is much more fluid to use—earlier versions never felt natural with the result I never used it for very long at a time. Every now and then I’d give it another try because I really need a solid iOS vector app. Yet each time it felt like starting over again to figure out its methods. Version 5 changes all that. It’s elegant, flexible, and efficient. The restructured gallery is a nice bonus. A real eraser is still at the top of my wish list. It would greatly help to have a basic visual color picker for selecting colors from scratch; however, the current color options are certainly much improved. More advanced line editing would also be welcome. The smoothing feature helps in many situations, fortunately. While it lacks the finesse of an anchor-point system, it’s also less fussy, which can often be an advantage. In sum, Concepts’ unique approach to vector drawing can be somewhat confusing in the early learning phase, but once you grasp the methodology, it provides that rare accomplishment: a vector app that puts drawing front and center.
Spencer E Holtaway's Review of ConceptsReviewed on 12/17/18 1:10 PM
There are others that do paint simulation better and have many more tools, etc, but true to its name, Concepts is perfect for sketching out concepts and inserting them in your workflow. I bought my iPad Pro for personal use (painting) but since getting concepts about 6 months ago I’ve taken it to work and used it every day. I run a design team at a technology company that moves pretty fast. I like to work with teammates to explore all of our options before jumping into desktop software, and Concepts has been an amazing tool for rapid iteration because of its vector tools. I’m able to move things around very quickly and easily, and share the sketches as reference over AirDrop or email and messaging apps. The developers really listen to their users, too. Given how much I use Concepts, I needed better organization than what the app delivered in previous versions (swipe between projects). I messaged in a feature request and this version introduced the handy drop down menu for all the projects! Thank you!

I wish the app would just leave my picture alone.. I can resize the picture to try to zoom in and it would move only certain parts of the drawings.. and it will never go back to the original..

Khenein's Review of ConceptsReviewed on 12/17/18 1:10 PM
I use this app daily for writing, sketching, designing and brainstorming. The current update is not as good as I anticipated. It might be faster as expected however it’s not as accurate when drawing and writing as it used to be on the previous version. On my iPad pro, when writing or drawing at my normal scale or smaller one, the lines appear to average themselves out with a 0% smoothness on my brush. The lines wobble noticeably and straighten themselves creating undesirable angles and overlaps. It seems like the app is either too slow to register my apple pencil’s movement and figure out the path, or that it’s not reading the full resolution of my pencil’s input. This never happened before on previous versions. It messes up my lines subtly and requires corrections with each stroke, as for writing, it appears terrible. You’ll need to be writing at a large scale for round strokes or close lines to appear properly. I hope the developers would fix this for the next versions, but if you have the choice, and wish to have an accurate writing/drawing experience, skip version 5.3 for now. I wish I could revert to 5.2 again. To me, accuracy is a higher priority to performance for a professional app.
zaaxau's Review of ConceptsReviewed on 12/17/18 1:10 PM
Does anyone know how to delete layers? Arc function is very limited; can't always change curvature because there is no specific control for that. Erased lines at maximum zoom level reappear at lower zoom settings; very annoying. Responding to the developer's response. Thanks! Great customer service. Figured out how to delete layers. It is still annoying that the program creates layers automatically depending on the tool used. Arc support function definitely needs a third control in the middle of the arc, getting the curvature right with just two end-controls does not work well most of the time. I am using the hard erasure to erasue, however, things don't really get erased even though you can't see what is erased. For example, I erased a line then was trying to write with the text tool at the place where the line was, an invisible line would hide parts of the text box. I had to step back, remove the line and then rewrite.
Brian Mead's Review of ConceptsReviewed on 12/17/18 1:10 PM
It looks so promising but my frustration level is so high it borders on insanity that I keep trying. All I wanted to do is sketch out a rough caster and put it under an 8 foot base, but that took an hour and I still failed. The help section boasts all these neat features it can do, but fails to cover some basics, like use it’s guides to draw a simple circle under a simple line.

I have both this app and the Procreate drawing app. I feel this app is more beginner friendly. When I get frustrated drawing on the Procreate app with the different brushes I switch to this app and am able to get the look I want. I like that there is a free version to this app and it still offers plenty of access for the beginner.

The abilities of this program are impressive. But a person like me can’t use it. Too complicated. There is a long, long manual explaining all the capabilities but It can’t be printed out so it is virtually useless for me because there is WAY too much to learn. I need a manual I can refer to as I learn. If you are already familiar with this type of program you will probably love it but if you are a newbie you will be lost. The review above was written just before the manual was published. I now say the program is very impressive and comprehensive. But there is so much that my learning curve is going to be steep. My only complaint at this moment is the absence of a “Table of Contents” to make it considerably easier to locate information.

psychoacoustic's Review of ConceptsReviewed on 12/13/18 12:54 PM
I’ve been using Concepts for over a year, during which time it’s evolved from “oh, that’s nice” to an absolutely essential part of my workflow. My main use of Concepts is for various kinds of technical sketching/drafting purposes. Everything from concept drawings for projects destined for the workshop and/or CAD, pattern drafting complex fiber arts work, and much more. I’m not a production visual artist; rather Concepts is my first-stop design studio. As such, Concepts’ infinite canvas, layers, and vector-vs-pixel based model are the key features that make my work a joy. With the infinite canvas, I can seamlessly work and sketch on related ideas & drawings, then rearrange and/or export what I need for inclusion in other documents. Layers are a gigantic timesaver, making it easy to select, duplicate, and modify various “slices” of my work, allowing easy correction of mistakes, evolution of ideas, and eliminating lots of tedious redrawing. Likewise, the vector model plays into the layer support, making it straightforward to select, group, and edit individual artifacts. All that’s the tip of the iceberg. As you get further into it, so many features come together to make your work better and faster. How about a *tiny* bit of smoothing to clean up my janky line work? Or crank smoothing to 100% for minute to get ruler-straight lines without even having to break out the “Precision” tools.

Concepts is by far the best App for conceptual design and development on the IPad Pro hands down. It works great with the Apple Pencil and sports all of the Copic colors. The brushes are varied, versatile and customizable. I am a professional illustrator and this is my go to App on the IPad Pro. The online help is amazing, it’s stable and easy to use. I have nothing negative to say. This is the first App on the IPad Pro where I have taken a project from the concept to fully realized rendering. Perfect! Caleb L.

KiloLima's Review of ConceptsReviewed on 12/13/18 12:54 PM
Such a powerful app and though I suspect it is much easier than the first days of Autocad (which I completely rejected) ... there still is a bit of a learning curve for those who still enjoy plotting design with pen and paper. Fantastic interface with wonderful tools and customizations. On iPad Pro with Apple Pencil it’s a fantastic and fluid experience even with the high learning curve for me. My only frustrations are my lack of understanding and wanting to move faster than my knowledge allows. Concepts really motivates you to push forward. I had previously tried using the app on iPad mini with 53 Pencil but it wasn’t nearly as fluid or as positive of an experience. Frustrating actually. Sorry Mr. Jobs ... Apple Pencil is a marvelous tool with apps such as Concepts.
Buddahfly's Review of ConceptsReviewed on 12/13/18 12:54 PM
I know this app’s main purpose is design, but I have used this app to flush out mathematical (mostly topologically based) concepts with a coherence that would have been very difficult to maintain in a notebook. The app just keeps getting better and better. I owe a lot of my dissertation work to the creators of this app. Many thanks to them. I highly recommend this app.
Wit Man's Review of ConceptsReviewed on 12/13/18 12:54 PM
If you have intuitively figured out how to use the interface then write a book about. For the casual user, use paper and pencil and save yourself time and money. A concept these developers never learned.
Badapp12323's Review of ConceptsReviewed on 12/13/18 12:54 PM
I originally gave this app two stars for a customer support issue which was an oversight and some bugs that can cause a newer user some considerable problems. I have increased my review to 4 stars for a customer support experience that went very well, and for the app itself, what it is now, and what I can imagine it will develop into over time. Because of the way the creators see the drawing process, the app is unique. Unique apps can be hard to learn, but in this case I am finding it well worth it. I hope to see some training videos that focus less on seeing someone else create a fantastic drawing, and more on explaining the logic behind the apps features. My summary point is that most of the problems I have with the app are not due to the app itself, but rather to my own shortcomings and struggle to understand the drawing process in a computer context.

I love the saying: “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” and that’s what happened with my fav app. Too much add ons too much greedy and now it’s not sketch friendly. If you are an artist like me I’m pretty sure you know what I’m talking about. That feeling using the Apple Pencil on a sketch app that moves you is not there anymore. I’m not going to delete this app from my iPad Pro yet... but I got a feeling I will soon. It’s good it’s just not for me anymore.

Version 4.7 is the Best. I’ve now been using it more and more for Architectural drawings and I’m now upping my rating to a 5 Star. It’s nearly perfect. Thanks for the continuous updates and enhancements! I've been using a number of different drawing apps and I love this recently updated version 3.xx of Concepts. There is lots of competition and I'm still developing my final thoughts, but this newest version is shaping up to be one of the very best drawing apps I've used on the iPad.
stevegossett64's Review of ConceptsReviewed on 12/13/18 12:54 PM
I have iPad Pro 256GB and Concepts Pro. Once you surpass around 20 layers, and I mean just simple line art, Memory Warning starts showing in the top middle. I have made sure that all apps were closed and restarted my iPad with same thing occurring. Merging of layers is pretty whacky as well. When merging down two or three layers I end up losing some of whatever colors in a layer I have between the layers. Three layer object in point is if I create a simple Window with frame and glass panels, light and curtain. Granted they merge dependent on what layer is above what but this is in no way like a Photoshop merge where there is no loss. I would expect the light layer to merge as the back layer it is but not the case. Dev answered so this deserves an update. For the most part this is an awesome app and I will continue to use it. My comment above is based off the lack of understanding of the effects of vector graphics on memory so will stay only for the next guy. Truly, exporting as a transparent PNG and then importing into a new project as they recommend is the workaround once you start getting the error. I would love to export to Photoshop layered file without needing to have to log into an Adobe account though.

Hi there! I've been working on various projects between my iPhone and iPad, have made purchases from my phone, but those purchases won't transfer over to this same app on my iPad and it wants me to make the purchases again. My tablet is an old Gen 3, but that shouldn't stop from streaming over via iCloud. And I really don't want to make the same purchases again. What can be done?
Iaian7's Review of ConceptsReviewed on 12/13/18 12:54 PM
Concepts has been a lot of fun to use on my iPad Pro with Apple Pencil, and has proven valuable as a sketching app on a number of projects. The more recent addition of user customisable brushes has made it even better, and for the most part it remains just as fast and responsive as ever. The endless editability of strokes is fantastic, the user experience during drawing is well thought out, and the quality has been great. Unfortunately this is let down by buggy UI outside of the drawing experience itself. Actions like renaming (layers, drawings, sections, project) are accessed in completely different ways (tapping a button, long-pressing the text, tapping the text). It’s confusing and frustrating to navigate. Organising illustrations is worse. Moving an illustration into a freshly created section is nightmarishly difficult. Moving an illustration from one project to another reassigns illustration previews, making it look like the moved item is still in the old location, while the illustration next to it is gone. If you navigate to the project you moved it to...nothing will be there. I have to constantly remove the app from memory to force it to update, only then will it be revealed: nothing is missing, everything is fine, and the illustration was moved correctly. But you have to restart the app every single organisational action if you want to see if it worked. Deleting items is the same but even more randomised: illustration preview and even titles are seemingly randomly reassigned to incorrect elements until the app is removed from memory and reloaded from scratch. Concepts easily earns 5 stars for the drawing, 0 stars for the numerous interface bugs and inconsistent UX. How this averages out to 4 stars is a mystery: I guess the drawing really is that great!

I have used home design programs for years to draw construction ideas and landscape designs but they’ve always had limitations and are very time consuming to learn. The demo videos for Concepts are informative, although a bit quick for beginners to the app, and the layers allow easy idea changes without having to redraw and I love the ability to merge the layers. I just purchased the subscription this weekend and the cost is easy on the budget. I have experienced crashing of the app a few times when trying to change layers and I’m not sure why. Hopefully there is a new update coming that will correct this. Overall though I am extremely pleased.

I love Concepts UI and the way I’m able to work using it. My only drawback is the use of Adobe Creative Cloud for PSD (photoshop) file format. I don’t understand why they are not using iCloud for importing and exporting PSD FILES. I’ve written them about this issue and they responded quickly, but with a negative...they know but it is not a priority. Meanwhile, I cannot export because the Creative Cloud is not working the way it’s supposed to. A lot of artist use multiple programs when drawing and painting. And the file format PSD is great for moving layers between programs. This is my reason for four star rating.

Concepts is an amazing app that has reawakened my creative/artist side—you will not see any of my work blessing the walls or screens of other people. An app can only do so much. There is so much that Concepts can do that there has to be something for everyone from mere mortals that enjoy doodling to full-on professional designers and artists. Why would a review title say that a product is amazing AND support? I mentioned I’m a mere mortal... well I got stuck using a feature and after watching several YouTube videos and reading a well documented manual and other articles to boot, I couldn’t figure it out. Late on a Friday night, I decided to write support. To my surprise and delight, I received a reply early Saturday morning (today). I’ve drug this out long enough, but I can say that after a couple exchanges of information (I didn’t provide enough detail), I’m extremely satisfied, enough so to tap out my praise (it’s 1:10 PM Central Time, U.S.). Put away your mind numbing game and awaken your creativity—no one has to see what you create. Cheer!

Excellent program if it worked I have an iPad 13 inch and there is no reason for crashes. It constantly crashes... and after I bought all the brushes... And pro... When I first got this a while back it crashed then too... so I uninstalled it. I reinstalled it now and now it’s crashing again. Useless if it crashes. A five star program.... 1 Star.

I have used Concepts since I bought my first iPad. The only app that I use more is my timer (I'm not very good at managing time LOL!) 1 sketch, draw, make templates using Concepts ALL the time. Concepts is so versatile, so smooth , so professional. Adobe hates me because I keep asking them when they might someday have an IOS product even half as well done as Concepts ~ I ask this every time I send a new list of serious flaws with their IOS products. ... By the way IPAD pro + Concepts + iPAD pencil is absolute heaven. I do all my design work with them -- much easier than using a tablet and my desk top . Hd The following is my review from a few years ago when I bought my Pad 3. Still the best app when I want beautiful curves and lines. And such a smooth inking engine that i use it for freehand, too. Pure heaven when you need a bit of both. I use this app to create stained glass patterns. It has everything i need. I can set guides so that all my lines are aligned. It has prebuilt, adjustable shapes so that my arcs, circles, squares, etc. are perfect. And the best feature, i can draw a portion of my design, then copy and move, stretch, shrink and place elsewhere. How cool! You can import images, draw on transparent background, and so much more. Love it! Now i want to request drawing symmetry and i will be in heaven. Lol!

I believe the hype around this app is fabricated. I tried for half a day to draw a hexagon. After purchasing “Pro”, “Pro PAC” credits, emailing them, texting them in the app, requesting membership in the Facebook PromUsers Group, all I got was a link to Apple’s page for requesting a refund. Images about the inaccessible “Pro Shop” even show a hexagon as an available shape. If all that is OK when you need a simple polygon, this is the app for you.

Thanks for the fast response and update. Update...Okay I was able to restore previous in app purchases by going to my original iPad Pro and logging into the concepts app account that I created on my new iPad Pro, kinda a pain but works now on all devices. Note that it still reads go pro at the top though on the new pro pad. Old prob. Won’t restore previous in app purchases of essential and pdf thing, yes I’m using the correct Apple ID, it reads that I’ve purchased them, but the restore button doesn’t work, and still reads go pro at the top, why?

This program used to be really good. Snap to grid is now 100% broken tho which makes it almost useless to me. It’s basically impossible to draw a line that is exactly a given length. I really hope they fix it. It used to be 5 stars.

Concepts is an outstanding digital drawing/illustration software program. It is easy to learn and use. I love the ability to change settings of Brushes and color with very little effort. It was a well thought out program except for the ability to import and export PSD (Photoshop) files. One has to go though Adobe Creative Cloud which causes many problems. Why PSD files cannot be exported and imported through iCloud is not understood. This is my reason for the four star rating.

It is now a non intuitive interface!

Concepts is an amazing drawing app. I use it almost everyday from normal school work and projects, to doing the bulk of my drawing and drafting. Only suggestion I can give for future updates (or to give a tutorial on if already available) is how to change the text option. You only have one font when typing in app, and it can be hard to format or make creative, consistent titles. Only suggestion I can even think of though! Love the app!!

Decent drawing app. I’m not used to digital drawing so I loaded a few apps to practice with. This one helped me adjust the quickest. Tools are very limited in free version but paid version just isn’t that expensive. Would like a few more features like smudge and blend and for the paint brushes to be more opaque. Maybe I just haven’t found them yet. I did expect to get more access to additional brushes once I paid for it. Haven’t found those yet either. I adjusted the opacity for a few different brushes all the way up and still got a patchy look.

It has been 10 years since I’ve used any drafting software so I am a little technophobic. After reviewing other app, I decided to give Concepts a go. It was a little difficult in the beginning, but after watching the demo video; this app has become incredibly easy to use.

I finally had a real project to use this app for and put it through its paces. Man, is it a powerful tool. The balance of control over drawing tools (e.g. loose-to-smoothed slider) and simplicity of workflow (e.g. automatic layers by drawing tool) is a feat of design development. Thank you!

Well first I don’t have another app to compare it too... this the first app of this “type” of drawing program that I’ve used. I am throughly happy with it!!, that said their are a couple of minor things that drive me crazy. The Circular Toolbar that sits in the corner...drives me “Freak’n” nuts, accidentally put it in its semi-hidden mode and spent the next half hour trying to get back to its regular mode - makes me want scream and throw my iPad out the window. Lastly, (only two to begin with) precision mode tools... the one that allows to create line, eclipses, etc...is very finicky... try to move and it draws in the line, try to adjust it and draws on the line - makes you want scream!! Okay, so besides those minor faults... this app was extremely helpful in allowing me to draw a mock up of a kitchen renovation that I’m planning. I think the pricing is fair.. If was going to use this an accessory in my line of work I’d pay the subscription.

Every time I open Concepts lately it immediately asks me for my AppleID password. I regard this as suspicious behavior, and it needs to stop. Otherwise the app is ok.
Seattle Rex's Review of ConceptsReviewed on 12/13/18 12:54 PM
It’s very full-featured and a pleasure to use. To be perfectly candid, though, I’m a bit disappointed in the inclusion of an email ad when I wish to email schematics. Not allowing it to be turned off is an example of a design choice made solely to benefit the company, while offering no benefit to the user, and even affirmatively ignoring the user’s choice altogether. It’s a customer-hostile choice that probably doesn’t provide the company with significant benefit to offset the ill-will. It also telegraphs to the user that, when the interest of the company and the user deviate, even in areas that are seemingly slight, the company will serve itself to the detriment of the customer. It, at least to some degree, defines the relationship between the company and the customer. If the company sold tires or chewing tobacco, this likely would not matter, but the average IQ of the typical Concepts users probably exceeds average by several points, and thus are more likely to be a little put off by this, My two cents and its worth every penny.

Concepts has been really helpful in my design work and project planning. An infinite canvass, layers, and incredible smart tools leaves plenty of opportunities for expression. Updates continue to introduced new tools and innovative manipulatives. Worth every penny.

Best drawing app with an infinite canvas to do just what it advertises - conceptualize. This app is EVERYTHING. So awesome. Thanks for the hard work into making a product so perfect.

I used my office whiteboard daily to sketch concepts. I’d take a photo send it, get comments, edit the board, take another photo....a very punishing procedure. Concepts is the perfect fix for this routine. I love the app, and can’t figure out how I got by without it. My iPad is 2 years old, so far I’ve suffered no technical issues. Solid app.
