Pocket is what Evernote USED to be, clean, simple, fast as hell, and useful in clipping and organizing large collections of articles. The highlights feature is similar to what you see on a kindle, but easily aggregates all your highlights across articles into a clean, easily accessible list. Best of all, it's owned and operated by Mozilla, which feels a lot safer long term, and more beneficial to an open and useful internet.

Below is my previous review and is still accurate. The app is losing key functionality year over year. There are now several other better options. My issues include: - cannot share a full article without first opening with safari. All other options save a snipet only. Most do not include the category tags. - the premium service addon includes tag suggestions, but the user must manually apply. Very significant workflow issue! - cannot limit number of items downloaded - UI has the button bar in awkward spot for iPad user

Reviewed on 8/19/18 8:45 PMPocket is an excellent concept, but it seems to be lacking good integration with prominent news distributors. Many articles can’t load into the application due to pay walls (WSJ) and others fail to utilize the reader view (The Economist), merely saving links to the original content instead. These problems persist despite the consumer (me) having subscriptions with all the aforementioned parties. These failures may not be entirely attributable to Pocket, but the fact remains that a *payed* service which cannot complete its most basic advertised functions with major news distributors is not holding up its side of the bargain. I hope to return with a better review of an otherwise excellent service once these problems are fixed.

The current method, particularly since I highlight a lot, makes this very difficult! Allowing for a favorites tab at the bottom and a highlighted tab just sorted by article would be so much nicer. Just show me the articles that have highlights and let me click to see the article specific ones! Also, once I’m done with an article, either mark it as read on my list or let me delete it without another prompt if I don’t have any highlights! Archiving is great, but then makes my highlights hard to access as well. I love the functionality of the app however the organization of where I read and how I recall needs a lot of work.

They could at least improve the player experience by letting you select the paragraph you were reading and start player from there. Oh also found the player very buggy when connecting to Bluetooth in the car, it would not pick up where we previously had played, or just wasn’t playing any audio at all even though the play clock was running. And if an article has a lengthy title or one of Pockets’ new advertisements is stuffed into the feed (another unfortunate change is the extra advertising), it goes down to 1-2 articles per screen, max. Terrible design and excessive white space. Finally, another issue with My List is it should show the actual article publication date. Another example of simultaneously eating up more screen real estate while stripping away rich content.

Reviewed on 12/16/18 12:39 PMStarting with the design, it's way too large, fonts and all, and doesn't utilize current screen resolutions to any beneficial extent. Next the UX is getting worse and worse, making it harder to actually use the app for what it's meant for. And that takes me to my main frustration with the recent updates. Pocket has seemingly forgotten why people use their app in the first place. They were formally called READ Later, not LISTEN Later. The listen feature is nice, but it's not why I use the app. More importantly, it definitely doesn't warrent pushing every other feature (like tagging, archiving, and favoriting) out of focus. Also if I'm watching a video in the app it crashes after a few minutes, but that pales in comparison. Bottom line, if you want to make an article-listening app, don't s**** this one up to do it.

Reviewed on 12/13/18 12:30 PMPocket is a nice app and service, but i rate it Lowe because it could so easily be much better, both as an app and a web browser add-in. Tagging is tedious; it does not remember the tags I just used, it’s suggested tags are usually so generic as to not apply, and it does not allow copy/paste of a set of tags. Further, search by tags is far too limited, it should allow tag1 AND tag2. I even have the paid service; you’d think it would be better. It basically feels like the Pocket team does not actually USE their own product, because I bet if they did, it would be a lot more usable.

I read these every day and they really are some of the best articles on the web. But I hadn’t realized the app had been redesigned, so I never used it on my phone. I decided to once again give it a try because I can’t always read articles on Firefox at work, so I started saving them. Then I realized the new pocket app can read them to me. I’ve been using Voice Dream to read articles to me for years. I love this and truly think it is how many people will consume news in the future. So I was thrilled to see Pocket using this. Reviewed on 12/13/18 12:30 PMI have been using Pocket for many years (3+) and have often been top 1% of readers. What I ultimately want to use pocket for is an archive (or personal search engine) of all the articles I have read for personal and professional reasons. The problem is that when articles save they might save with unusual titles ( urls, wrong text extracted from the article, general wrong title, etc.). This interferes greatly with the searching system! The tagging system of pocket is great and I have a well-thought out tagging system, but it is not enough to easily search for articles. Ideally, searching for a tag AND a keyword located in the title would be very efficient. Solution: please allow us to rename articles. I have brought it up to the pocket suggestions multiple times over the years but to no avail. Other then that, thank you for making a functional and aesthetically pleasing app that has been well-maintained.

Over the last couple of years i’ve spent more time looking for articles that interest me whether for pure enjoyment, curiosity or research of information on a particular subject...that being an injury 3 years ago that resulted in a traumatic brain injury. The result of which has crippled my concentration and short term memory. Frustration with these issues is a daily battle. I was never exactly a technical wizard in terms of computers, and switched to Apple products in an effort to simplify the entire process. When I find an article, or series of articles, or a website I wanted to spend some time investigating there came with the excitement of finding it, the pit in my stomach that always accompanied that thrill...where would I put it? My reading list, a bookmark, my list of Favorites??! Attach it to an email to myself and store it in one of my hopelessly disorganized mailboxes, almost a guarantee that I’d search for it and waste a couple of hours, before waving the white flag. And once I randomly chose a spot to “park” it, would I ever be able to find it? At first Pocket sounded like a nice idea. Another option on my list of possible storage spots. But within a couple of days, I realized that when you hit the button to send an article to mail, messages, notes or the dreaded reading list/favorites or bookmarks there was Pocket! A viable, “official” PLACE. I know this is WAY too dramatic for most people, but having a reliable, viable, safe and recognized place to store the information that is valuable to me ranks up there with indoor plumbing in terms of “inventions”. Naturally I’m telling everyone I know about Pocket. A couple were familiar with it but hadn’t installed it. Probably because this news is not rocking their world. However the satisfaction of telling a couple of friends and hearing back that they think it’s a great tool as well. It makes my day. Long long review from someone who never leaves one. I’m sure you won’t have many traumatic brain injured people reviewing your product. Or perhaps when I tell those friends you will (IF they can remember the name Pocket) But thank you. The problems that were introduced with this new release are: 1) My prior use of the app has been to download articles and listen to them while I am away from home and offline. The app no longer allows me to listen to articles unless I am online. 2) When listening to an article, the controls periodically disappear and I am unable to pause an article. That is critical as there are times when I am interrupted and need to pause it. 3) This is minor, but I am no longer able to bulk edit and delete articles in my archive. Until the first two problems are solved, I will no longer be able to use Pocket.

vpaleni's Review of Pocket
Reviewed on 10/13/18 9:22 PMThe latest update, although looking even better aesthetically and with a much sleeker layout, has made changes that have intruded on my previous uses of your app. I shall state three or four changes that are troubling, that have made it so cumbersome for me to use Pocket, that I have contemplated ceasing to use it altogether (sadly). I will suggest these things to improve the quality of the app: 1. The way I use your app is to save articles onto my iPad and then listen to them later (using the audio feature), while I am doing other things. This allows me to get through material, but also to peek in once in a while at the text if some detail (name of person, book title, link) which I wish to consult later, or save for later, or to memorize. Such an arrangement allowed me to interact with the text audibly or sonically, but also gave me the feature to interact with the text sonically as well as visually. The update that was launched a few days ago severed the text from the audio, making it for me extremely difficult or cumbersome to track the text from the audio. I believe this is a step in the wrong direction, since your current update made the articles into tracks (like songs), severing them from the text, which one should merely listen to. The beauty of the app was that it allowed for me to listen to the articles visually and audibly. This in an unfortunate change which took away the main charm of the app, rendering it no longer useful for me, sadly. 2. Turning articles into "songs," developers gave a standard voice for the automated robotic reader of the text. This reading voice is annoying, as it does not read smoothly, and awkward, as it does not annunciate questions properly, changes in tone and pitch, often confusing relative pronouns for questions and so forth. It is off-putting and grates on my ears. Also, rendering the articles into "songs" format, meant that you introduced the +15/-15 second buttons. This is completely arbitrary, since articles are not divided into those fragments, but into sentences and paragraphs. If I didn't understand a paragraph, I just clicked back and it replayed the paragraph. The 15 second buttons don't track with the logic of the article or its structure, which means that I have to click away randomly until I think I am at the place that I need. It was much much more convenient and logical before, its quite arbitrary now. Also, dividing it into paragraphic units instead of a "song"-track, meant that I can put down the app. Open it up later and it would be at the paragraph that I needed, instead of a unquantifiable and unfinabel place on the line of the track. All this is much to cumbersome, making it more difficult, not easier or convenient, to continue using your app. If you introduced new features which required new skills to operate that would be different. But you seemed to have introduced features that have made it more difficult to use without any gains. It has become less useful and more difficult to operate. 3. For some inexplicable reason I no longer able to listen to the articles I saved for offline use using the text to audio feature, which means that I cannot listen to the articles without access to a Wi-Fi. This is extremely upsetting, since that was one of the best features of the app. I could listen to an article in my car, or on a walk, or as I am doing dishes etc. Now, I put on my headphones, wishing to listen to an article only to find that I cannot since I am not at a cafe or at home. I very much enjoyed being able to do that in the past and just get upset or sad now, being unable to do that. There may be other things that I am forgetting right now. If I sound mad, its because I am, but not maliciously. I love this app, the work you guys have been doing has been WONDERFUL, allowing me to be more productive, making my life more interesting since I can get through more stuff, avail myself to new writers, keeping abreast with the news, book reviews, blogs and all the other good stuff the internet has to offer. You have, in the past, made it extremely easy and convenient, for which I am and will be grateful. I want you to put out a good product, just as I want to continue advertising it to my friends who share my reading predilections. This last update had put all that under question. Please consider fixing these things. I do not think they are unreasonable or will somehow conflict with your current layout. If you wish to move into this new direction without making the fixed discussed above I think I will have to start looking for an app that does those things better. Or, and I say this in all seriousness, please allow me to install the app before this update, so I can keep that one without making any future updates. That would be sweet indeed. Though that would still make me sad that you would be indifferent to your users' preferences and do not care if people are exited to make the updates your work so hard to produce and launch. I look forward to hearing from you. And just to be clear, I am not ranting, I think I am (trying to) make constructive suggestions that will make this app better for me and other users. This app has become a great resource to me and (along with PDF Expert, which I see as this app's twin but for PDFs), it is the most used app I have on my iPad, please don't take that away from me.

Reviewed on 10/13/18 8:31 PMPocket's latest version, 7.0 (as of October 13, 2018) saw a lot of changes, many of which were negative. Bugs with crashing and UX changes make the app MUCH harder to use than before. The spacing for the article list is WAY too much - the previous layout and look was much better. As other users have stated, this makes it much harder to scroll through a long list, and the user can only see four articles at once on the screen. Some app-breaking bugs have also been introduced, leaving the app crashing down whenever the screen is locked or the focus goes to another app and comes back. Essentially, to keep the app from crashing you have to always keep your screen on and never go to another app or the home screen. While others might have liked the new speaking feature, there is also an issue with viewing an article while this is happening (as others have stated). Altogether the latest 7.0 version is completely unusable, and while the 6.x version was 5-star, and new one only deserves two or even one due to the new crashing bugs.

The new pocket cannot read to me. It will read English articles without problems. But Chinese? No. Worse yet, it covers up the text with this banner that you cannot remove. Remove banner, stops reading. And that presentation icon that deletes your articles. Great. Make it easy to accidentally delete articles before you read them. If I go into web view and go to another page and then go back to article view, pocket used to display the article view of the new page. Not anymore. Reviewed on 10/12/18 8:07 PMPocket was one of my favorite apps Day in and day out. Unfortunately this newest update feels like a step back in usability. The new article spacing means you see far less in a single screen, so you have to scroll more to find articles. More movement means it’s harder to see. This seems like a small complaint, but now that I have to scrub more, I really need some automated searching and sorting. For example, let me sort by the source (NYT, Fox, WSJ) without me having to tag things (or auto-add a tag for the publisher or site if available). Let me sort by date (or at least put in dividers) so I can see what I saved last Friday easily. Now that I have to scrub its actually harder for me to find my place. Let me sort by read/unread. Let me create a shortlist for “read this week” and “read when I have free time”. All of these things didn’t bother me before, but now they are driving me nuts.

However with the latest update each article link in the list is given a much greater separation and emphasis, almost as if they’re featured on the front page of a newspaper. This is harder to scroll through efficiently than it was with the previous list view when you have hundreds of articles saved. Please, this interface/presentation change was unnecessary and doesn’t add anything to the experience. If anything it makes it look as if I have far less articles than I actually do and would seem to discourage scrolling through many of them which is part of the reason I have your application/service.

You might reply to this and say something along the lines of “Well we don’t need to post things like “moved button x 2 pixels to the right” and that might be true, but you owe it to your users to be transparent if you want to be a trustworthy developer. Reviewed on 10/12/18 1:31 AMI have used the pro version for years, and love it, so I don’t want to make this sound too negative - this has been a great app for a long time for me. Unfortunately, I’ve also come to rely on it as my main content “reading app”, and I’m finding that this new update is frustrating, as it brings few meaningful positive changes, and apparently quite a few annoying bugs that interfere with basic reading functions. I wish I had waited for future dot releases... On iPhone XS Max, the app locks up often and needs to be closed/restarted; selecting multiple entries in the list view, and then batch-adding tags to them doesn’t work at all (you have to go to full article and add these to one title at a time) I tend to tag stuff, so it’s a major pain; trying to add passwords to subscription sites is impossible (blank screen replaces actual content on the URL and password entry screen, with no keyboard, in an endless loop, forcing an app restart, again. There are many smaller annoyances which might be due to my personal preferences, but it’s hard to call them improvements (e.g., tags now take a LOT of space on the list screen, unnecessarily, allowing it to show by far fewer items than before). Yes, audio addition is sort of cool, but most of the people who really like listening to content (I do, when I drive), are probably already using something much better sounding, such as VoiceDream app, with an impressive collection of high-quality, international voices, ability to parse and read correctly PDFs and other files, etc. Pocket offers only the basic iOS voices (and changes them arbitrarily during reading of the same article), which are perfectly functional for quick notifications or reminders, but are not very suitable for sustained reads/listening, sounding too tinny and mechanical. Can’t envision listening to this during a two-hour trip... There is no option to add/purchase high quality alternative voices like there is in VoiceDream. I was looking forward to an “improved” version, but the previous version was great, and now I wish I hadn’t upgraded too quickly. I hope that at least some of these major misbehaviors will get fixed soon in the forthcoming dot releases, and then, hopefully, Pocket will go back to being its good old four star app again? Please? :)

Angular Mo's Review of Pocket
Reviewed on 10/12/18 12:22 PM1. Too much white space around photos and titles in the mobile view. 2. Pressing on the screen no longer brings up the menu to categorize an article.

Reviewed on 10/12/18 11:55 PMIs it not possible to view archived articles by tag anymore? The new text settings aren’t as clean as before - line height is smushed. Took me awhile to realize what some of the new icons were for. But, the article list & discovery view look cleaner now with some padding.

Reviewed on 10/12/18 10:34 AMThey revamped it so you can’t access “untagged” items by themselves. Instead they got mixed in with all the other tagged items. If you had that option before, why take it away? Like a usual app builder their upgrades make it worse. Maybe Reddit is better afterall ☹️.
Schnitzengruben2013's Review of Pocket
Reviewed on 10/12/18 10:12 PMI want the old version back. It had features the new one lacks including: 1) The ability to follow along visually while listening. This resolved many ambiguities with CG spoken word (e.g. where quotation marks start and end). Also, I could pause the audio and highlight an important passage. Mo more. 2) The ability to listen without using data. I could turn on airplane mode to save battery and listen to anything downloaded. No longer. I am learning the hard way to never update apps that work. As they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Japan Beer Lover's Review of Pocket
Reviewed on 1/10/19 12:41 PMPocket is nearly perfect. Since my iPad is WiFi only, Pocket is the best way for me to save articles for later reading. It’s especially useful on trains, buses, and planes. Sometimes saved links don’t display completely or correctly, but you can relink with the original very easily, so it’s not a major problem. Five stars all the way.

johnnydelicious's Review of Pocket
Reviewed on 1/10/19 12:41 PMExtremely easy and convenient to use. No obnoxious ads. Free of charge. Compared to your average App Store app it’s easily a five. -1 star because of one oversight: I often like to read along while listening to the audio narrator. This is not possible in the app! I have to open safari and read along there.

Reviewed on 1/10/19 12:41 PMThe app is great for saving and categorizing things but when I go back to view them in the app the pages never old properly. Instead I am taken to a page with HTML code displayed. In order to see the page I have to click the web view.

Reviewed on 1/10/19 12:41 PMMy main gripe with this App is why they recommend articles that you either need to pay for or need a username and password. Also have synching issues across different devices. Could be better.
