If you have more podcasts in your queue than you could ever possibly listen to, get this app. Lots of tricks to maximize listening time like eliminating silences, speed up playback. Very easy interface. Syncs playback between devices. Share audio without recipient needing to have a player of any type. So happy my old standby player from 2010 still around and upgrading on the regular. What’s more, they’ve embraced the Apple Watch side of things which makes listening on the go even better. The best.

I like to change my podcast app every once and a while to see how the competition is doing, but every time I come back to Pocket Casts. The combo of a great interface, night mode, solid playback options, account sync, and overall amazing app stability/no crashes make this a superior podcast app.
jd2020's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 9/29/18 2:37 AM
Since iOS 11 playback in control center is unreliable. When paused, rewind/FFW controls don’t update shown position/time, but pressing play resumes at correct place. Playback on BT seems to drop, while music doesn’t. No improvement under iOS 12 beta and Official release. Considering going back to Overcast even though I like how PC is designed.

It does what Podcast apps do. Without good management features there isn’t much difference. With this one, you can’t swipe to delete nor select multiples and delete files from your device. You have to click multiple screens to get to delete a file. It’s retarded.
Raylon's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 9/27/18 4:51 PM
I’ve tried all the podcast apps. The Apple one used to be okay, but turned to garbage. Other apps are just stupid with unnecessary stuff that I don’t care about. This is a simple no frills podcast app that allows me to easily and simply track what I have listened to and what I need to listen to. Awesome lists you can filter a ton of ways with lots of other customization options. And no bloat. The only thing I can’t figure out how to do is clear the downloads list. Once stuff is downloaded I thought I could swipe to get rid of them but I ended up marking some shows as played instead. That’s my only complaint!

For the last year Pocket Casts has fallen behind Overcast. They haven’t updated or improved the UI. Most of all, they need to add volume control to their WatchOS 5 app. I used to love this app, but it’s running slower and slower lately and the Devs aren’t very responsive.
Yvvvvvvfsgh's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 9/23/18 2:30 AM
I’ve been a pocketcasts user for years but have been forced to switch to Overcast. Overcast is constantly adding new features. What pushed me over to the other side was the lack of offline downloads/playback on watchOS 5. Both Overcast and Apple’s stock podcast app support this already. I love the pocketcasts UI and organization and would love to keep using it but offline playback is a must with watchOS5 in 2018.

This podcast app has excellent features including a great way to find and add new podcasts. Not overpriced like other apps. Has a great interface with very useful settings. The only big drawback is no search function within the podcast. This feature is on most of the other apps out there.

This is by far top two best podcast apps in the App Store! It blows away Apple's own app. The “vocal boost” along with the “skip silence” is awesome. My only problem with the app is it does not currently offer password support for podcast like Apple Podcasts and Overcast, if they added that this would easily be a 5 star app. I would like to see the ability to download podcasts to Apple Watch so I don’t have to take my phone with me when I workout.

Since the Apple Podcast app update a year or whatever ago, I have hated it and was desperate for an alternative. App after app I finally found this and decided that a one-time fee of 3.99 would be nothing if i actually liked it. Purchased it and never looked back! Very easy to navigate and find new podcasts as well. The only negative thing I have to say is that I don’t like how you have to subscribe to listen to a podcast. It’s not a huge problem at all but would be nice if I could just check out an episode without having to

This was my favorite app for a long time but the glitches make it unbearable. I use this app to listen to podcasts, and audiobooks & seminars by using a custom podcast feed. Sometimes the app accepts the custom feed URL on the 1st try, sometimes on the 2nd, but lately not at all. Instead it says some BS about my internet connection. I’ve tried importing the feed in OPML format to no avail. So far I’ve tried 6 other other podcast apps and each finds the podcast instantly. I’m not confident they will fix the issue because as of 8/7/18 there’s been no response to my support email. Hopefully they fix it or I find an alternative app that has the trim silence feature. Pocket Casts is a great choice if you’re just listening to podcasts listed in the Discover index, which is quite limited compared to other apps.

I listen to a gross amount of podcasts. This app is far superior to the iOS option and any other free options I have tried. My one improvement request is to make the app work with password protected feeds. I subscribe to some casts where adfree feeds are hidden behind a password protected URL and pocket cast is the only app that those don’t want to work with. PLEASE FIX THIS!!! Thanks <3

Came from Podcast Addict on Android and imported my collection via OPML. -No option to multi select episodes to mark 'unplayed' or Played -To mark an episode as read, you need to tap the episode then three dots then Mark Played...(inconvenient) -Should have a toggle filter to hide played episodes (instead of listing 400+ episodes for example) -Should have "Mark older podcasts as played" from selecting an episode The app is definitely better than the Apple Podcast app but needs work to be easily utilized. The ideal audience based on the options is not for importing/power users. In my opinion not worth the $3.99 as it is now.

If you used Podcast Addict on Android, Pocket Cast is the next best thing. I’ve tried 3 or 4 podcast apps since switching over to an iPhone and they all sucked! Like, they are really bad. As much as Apple makes a great product and I love everything else about iPhone, somehow podcasts are the one area where a lot of the apps are terrible. No great way to customize, create playlists, sort by release date, modify listening speeds or skip silences... I finally hit the bullet and paid for Pocket Cast out of frustration and it paid off. This is a decent app and does just what I want. The final test will be in my car in a few minutes to see if I can use my car’s playback controls to skip around. If it works, I won’t be so sad about losing Podcast Addict. Three thumbs up.

I PURCHASED this app because it had a Windows 10 app as well. The Windows 10 app is free and I had assumed I could sync my progress between the two. Which you can if you’re willing to pay a monthly fee. No thanks. I would ask for a refund and just continue using the stock podcast app if I had known this.

A honest to goodness podcast app w/ the coveted chromecast button that works! If you don’t care about this feature it’s not worth paying for, however, the fact that I can listen to podcasts on the TV is something I deeply desired and I am pleased it works properly AND has more precise control of where you are in the podcast compared to the native app.

I’ve tried plenty of other podcast apps, and while I’ve enjoyed a couple of them, they pale in comparison to Pocket Casts. The others were always lacking one or two features that I needed/wanted. This app has everything I’ve been looking for — grid layout for podcasts, custom skip times, really customizable settings, and an extensive, up-to-date library to find new or old shows. I hardly ever shell out money on apps. ***This one is worth the $*** I’m very happy with this purchase and def recommend this one over the others I’ve tried.

I was excited to have the option to finally have a podcast app that syncs across all my different devices (iOS, Android, Windows, Browser). However, what was not made clear until I had purchased the app on my iPhone was that in order to use the app across the different devices I will have to PURCHASE it each time. So yes, $3.99 is reasonable for a one time download, but it’s $9.99 for web access, and another $3.99 for Android. I imagine the Mac OS will be another $9.99. This is blatantly false advertising because their main page that allows access to very little information says “If you like what you see, we’ll ask for you for $9. Just once.” They should really clarify that. I’ll be requesting a refund through the Apple store.

Fantastic features, regularly updated, simple to use. But the icing on the cake are the app update notes. :) I try other podcast apps every time there’s a major release just to see what’s out there but always keep coming back to this one. Once you’ve decided you’re a podcast listener it’s time to download Pocket Casts.
Maijstral's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 7/5/18 2:10 PM
I have been using Pocket Casts pretty much as long as it’s been around. I first got it on either IPhone 3 or 4, stuck with it when I went to android, and it was the first app I installed when I got my iPhone X. So I’m definitely a fan. At this point though, I’m looking to move on. The bloat that has apparently built up over the years has it so that running the app in the background uses roughly the same amount of batter as running Facebook with the screen on (roughly 5% per hour). When I’m looking at my phone at the end of the day and over half of my batter has been used by a single background app, that’s a real problem.

Simple interface, with all the important features. They made the syncing features that iTunes attempts to offer actually work. This perfectly replaces iTunes with better features and a cleaner interface. (Now there is no need for the clunky PC iTunes at all!)
mokann's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 7/30/18 2:55 AM
If you are just using this app on your phone with headphones, this app is perfect. Where it falls apart is if you try to do other stuff with it, namely chromecast/AirPlay and CarPlay. For CarPlay podcast normally won’t play at all until I take my phone out and press play in the app, and then you can pause it on the car screen but if you want it to play again you have to get your phone out again. You have to select a episode multiple times before it will play, again if it plays at all. For Casting/AirPlay you can not control the volume from your phone. Also if you finish an episode it will not play the next episode in the playlist and it will reset you progress on the episode you were just listening to where it was when you started casting. Same with if you disconnect from casting, it’ll reset your progress. I would gladly come back to this app if they improve their support for CarPlay and casting because the app it self is awesome. I love how you can set auto download setting for individual podcasts, as well as auto queuing for individual podcasts letting you automatically add episodes to the top of the playlist or the bottom, and the auto-cleanup feature, which will only keep as many episodes as you specify for each individual podcast, is awesome. All in all I wish I could keep using this app but it just doesn’t work where I need it to, and that’s a huge shame.

Favoriting the best episodes, syncing them up with my PC through the website, and everything else about this app is great, with the sorting options especially. HOWEVER, the Apple CarPlay app does NOT keep the same sorting order (newest first/oldest first) along with episodes that are marked as played. I need to scroll through the 40 episodes I've listened to every day to get to the unlistened episodes to play them... While driving. Easy fix though, please keep the same selection options as the app in Carplay!!!

Podcasts are a part of my everyday routine. Since last week or so, the app completely stopped downloading new episodes both on mobile and wifi. It streams fine, just doesn’t save what it downloads. Me and my wife have Google smart speakers in our home and we love them, my wife has the Pixel XL 2 and I have an iPhone X. She doesn’t have any issues casting from her phone. Unfortunately this app doesn’t work very well with these devices for my iPhone. I cast from Spotify and other apps with no issues, this app doesn’t connect and sits in “Buffering...” until the app force closes. I am able to listen with other Bluetooth headphones/devices with no issues. I love the interface and it’s honestly so much better than the stock app. I’m giving two stars, not being able to listen around my home is a deal breaker. I hope the devs get this app fixed and I can listen on my Google devices or I’ll be removing this app and finding something else that works for me.

I am a big podcast listener. Every day, I listen to podcasts during my work commute. I also listen while doing regular household chores. The ability to listen to my podcasts just how I want to makes this app outstanding in my book. I can start episodes automatically skipping the beginning and speed up playback so I get through the episodes faster. The last thing I particularly want to commend the authors for is their integration with my password manager (1Password) when signing into the app. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I just got compromised by this app today. I was “signed out” and they asked for my password. I guessed and gave them an old password before going to my password manager. Old, wrong password worked. Minutes later I get an email with the (wrong) password I entered in the subject line and they were extorting me for $1,000. ShiftJelly doesn’t have a support team. Their website claims they are a small company, and they don’t have a formal support team. I submitted a “feedback” ticket, but they were silent in responding. The app never updates. I suspect that the app has a vulnerability that is being actively exploited because it uses a library with known vulnerability. That’s just a guess though. Don’t use this!! It’s abandonware. It’s a shame, really. It was a great podcasting app.

I love this app. It has pretty much everything you could ever want in a podcasting app. The one feature I wish the app had would be the ability to listen to episodes of a podcast without having to subscribe to it. If I want to stream a single episode of a podcast I have to subscribe and then unsubscribe, an act that makes this more complex than it should be. Other than great amazing! The developer has a history of addressing user concerns so I hope they can address this.
S Steps's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 7/21/18 7:11 PM
Cons: No "playlists", just filters. And don't treat them the same or you'll be frustrated. For example, you're listening and you decide you want to hear a particular episode later. You hit the skip button. But after the new episode plays, it goes right back to the one you previously skipped. Swiping does different things in different, but similar looking contexts. From left to right in now playing, you have episode description, player, queue. You swipe between them. Now go look at a filter. Sure looks like a queue doesn't it? But don't swipe because it will mark the episode played, remove it from the list, and (depending on your settings) delete it. With no undo button and no concept of a trash can, good luck figuring out what episode you just prevented yourself from hearing. Overcast at least has a trash can. All iPhone podcast apps are inferior to Podcast Addict on Android.
andrew.conkling's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 7/2/18 3:18 PM
I had been using Overcast with good satisfaction until recently, when it showed some fraying at the edges. Some friends suggested Pocket Casts so I checked it out: It’s really easy to move around through the app, to access podcast settings and things quickly. A lot of care has gone into the design. (The Apple Watch app deserves a special shout out here.) The Up Next feature is a bit more fiddly than Overcast’s priority podcasts but it works well to keep up with favorite podcasts first and those that “expire” (like news or daily shows). This is almost perfect, short of playing by podcast order. The only thing I’d like to see is an available sorting by podcast order. Ordering podcasts in the “grid” screen should be available to play podcasts in an episode filter in that order. (Currently you can only play by date, from oldest or newest.) That one setting would enable me to listen to favorites first which is the only thing I can’t quite do right now.

I swapped out from an Android to iPhone almost a year ago. I used and loved Podcast Addict but it's unfortunately not on iOS. I've been trying ever podcast app I read about, Stitcher, Pod Bean, Overcast, the native app. I just couldn't find one that I liked. Then along came Pocket Casts. The interface is very similar to Podcast Addict, a little watered down, but similar. It's easy to use, add episodes to the current playlist, and I was able to transfer my podcast list from my Android to Pocket Casts via OPML file. I do enjoy the 'Stat' tracker it has, showing how much time you've saved by speeding up playback or skipping intros. There are a few things I would change though. Podcast Addict has a search feature that allows you to search a podcasts episodes list for keywords. It's a nice feature I wouldn't mind seeing on Pocket Casts. Also the way each podcasts episode list is organized is a little strange. I don't like that it separates the played episodes from the not played ones. I would like it better if they just stayed in order of newest to oldest and just greying out the played ones. If these features were to appear it would be a six stars all the way for me!

The internet connection is fine on both devices and I have no problems with any other apps. Tried it with and without WiFi on both phones. My guess is they’ve turned off the servers for this app. Don’t waste your money. Should be pulled from the App Store.
dragon813gt's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 7/16/18 9:26 PM
I’m rating it two stars because there’s no simple way to delete an episode. You can’t swipe to delete like you should be able to. I don’t understand why no one has developed a podcast app like the old Apple one. Before they screwed it up it was easy and efficient to use. Some of us want exactly what it used to offer. Paying money for an app and then finding out there’s no way to delete single episodes is ridiculous. Such a simple feature should be included and it’s one I didn’t think would ever be omitted. I’m being generous w/ two stars because the lack of this feature warrants a zero star review since a basic function isn’t available.

Great app. Intuitive. My search for a great podcast player is over. And this developer writes profoundly thoughtful release notes on updates - would that Facebook and the other giants ever made the effort... 😊

I listen to a LOT of podcasts. I’m a librarian, who, every day repairs, labels, and shelves books. In other words, I have a lot of time to listen to new podcasts. Pocket Casts provides a BEAUTIFUL app layout that makes listening to new (and my favorite) podcasts easy and efficient. Old podcasts that are no longer in Apple’s podcasts, PC has them. It’s such a wonderful app and I use it almost all day, everyday. Perfect for an iPhone X or iPad mini (I use both). Thank you for your support on the app, and I look forward to new things you plan on adding!

I ADVISE YOU TO SHOP FOR ANOTHER APP. Like many users of this app, I bought this app for its support for GoogleCast. This allowed me to wirelessly stream any video podcasts from this app to SmartTV. However, this app stopped that feature. Why??? GoogleCast has been adding new features, new security updates and bug fixes. That’s good news for SmartTV owners. But the developer of this app does not seem to care about updating it to continually make it work with GoogleCast on SmartTVs. Just take a look at many other similar iOS and Android apps that also support GoogleCast. Example: YouTube app. I have absolutely no issue streaming videos from YouTube app on my iPhone to SmartTV using the latest GoogleCast. Important point is the developer does not even have to make any code changes to support the latest GoogleCast which is usually backward compatible with previous versions anyways. Any breaking change is announced by Google months in advance to these app developers. Well, it seems like this app developer simply does not care!!

I really wanted to love this app. And I do like it. Overall I think the ecosystem is better than iTunes + Podcasts app. I always prefer single-purpose apps as opposed to a catch-all like iTunes. But Pocket Casts has a syncing issue, where if I listen to a podcast on my iPhone, the position does not update on my Mac. Sometimes it works (maybe 30% of the time?). The developer knows about the issue and I’ll be happy to update my review when it’s fixed.

I have been using Pocket Casts for a while now and have been generally pleased with the experience. One major issue I have found was when I deleted the app and reinstalled it. Before deleting, I had gone to Settings>Account>Sync Now. I had hoped this would sync all my listening data to my account, primarily the played and unplayed episodes of my 32 podcasts. When I reinstalled the app and signed in, I was unpleasantly surprised to find that it hadn't worked. Each show listed every episode as played except the most recent episode in each podcast! I am disappointed, but maybe I misinterpreted what the sync button is designed to do. I would appreciate some feedback or some possible solution so I don't have to go back through almost 2000 episodes of content just to mark all the ones that are played and not played.
Buckeye1964's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 6/8/18 10:47 PM
While this app has probably the best interface of all the casting apps, you CANNOT sync your progress across devices without purchasing a separate license like you can with Apple’s Podcast app. If I had known this before, I probably would not have purchased this app.

I have just started using Pocket Casts, and I am very happy with it! Podcasts are a big part of my life, and Pocket Casts males it easy to organize all my many subscriptions. The BIG feature that is so important it takes up one whole star: it doesn't show my played episodes. I follow several podcasts that are narrative and are best listened to in order, and I cannot see what episode I last listened to. I like everything except this about this player!

Let me start by saying, I absolutely love this app. The layout, design, and everything about it works perfectly and I absolutely love how it integrates with my Sonos system. I would absolutely recommend this app to anyone that wants a better podcasting app in the one built into the phone, with only one real downside. With Apple announcing a podcast app for the Apple Watch. I would love to see this app expand their Apple Watch app and let me download podcasts to listen off-line. If I could listen to my Pocket Casts off-line on my Apple Watch while I run, this app would be the absolute best app in the world!

I use chromecast audio devices around my house and pocket casts was always really flakey with which devices it found. The latest update has fixed that, so this is the ultimate podcast app for me now. Syncing across devices, silence trimming, chromecast and car play in a beautifully designed app, it ticks every box for me.
First time runner.'s Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 6/3/18 6:18 PM
I tried a few different apps for podcasts after the default Apple one went to absolute crap. This one has good design, and I love that you can trim silence and play at faster speeds. I’d up my rating if these issues were addressed: - The “download all” button doesn’t work at all. - You can’t download an episode or even see a list of episodes for a podcast without subscribing to it. Additionally, if you unsubscribe, it will delete all episodes you have saved, which is really inconvenient. - It marks episodes played when you haven’t played them at all. This makes it hard to see what’s going on when you subscribe to a new podcast. - New episodes don’t always download automatically. It’s annoying because it waits until you open the app, meaning that sometimes it can be a bit of a wait before download. - You can’t organize your subscribe podcast list. This isn’t all that important, but it would be a nice feature.

Here’s the deal. This app is beautiful, it’s easy to use, and it hardly EVER has technical issues. I haven’t had an issue with Pocket Casts since I started using it a few years ago. And the funny stats on how long you’ve listened is awesome too. Definitely 100% recommend over any other single podcasting app
Timbo907's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 6/27/18 8:34 PM
It would be incredibly useful to be able to search say “mickey mouse” and be able to see all episodes that mention “Mickey mouse” and listen to an individual episode. Currently frustrated that I have to subscribe to a podcast before I can merely view the episodes. I still cannot search or filter through the episodes.

Nice interface, and with the newly-added options to auto download only on wifi and to warn before using cellular data, I can have my podcasts set to auto-download without worrying about wasting data every time I am out of wifi range and still want to stream an occasional podcast. The developer fixed what for me became a fatal problem with the app design. I’m glad to be able to use this app again for my podcasts!
jbond024's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 6/25/18 4:48 PM
For those of you still using the stock Apple podcast app, let me tell you the three big things that will keep my locked in with pocket casts. I’ve listened to 16 DAYS of podcasts since I picked up my iPhone 7 back in 2016 so I think I can give a fair review here. 1. Silence removal, intro skipping and precise speed controls. When you listen to a large quantity of podcasts these features save you a lot of time. While Apple podcast allows speed control, it goes 1x all the way to 1.5 which are find too fast. I keep my pocket cast at 1.3 2. It works with my in car forward and back buttons to skip forward and back. This is probably the single biggest thing preventing me from ever using the stock app. With Pocket cast My 2013 VW skips forward by 45 seconds when I hit the “skip forward” in car button. Apple podcast app does not do anything when I hit the in car button. The ability to skip ads when driving is absolutely a must have because it’s probably where I listen the most. 3. Faster refresh rate - I find pocketcast pulls the latest streams faster than the stock app. If you are even a moderately frequent podcast listener this is the most obvious purchase I can think of. I think by pure run time this is probably the most frequently used app on my phone, it’s basically always running. 10/10 great Dev, great app.

As a ravid podcast listener this app is simply just a gamechanger. Beautiful, intuitive and lovely supported, switching from Android to iOS I was worried about having to massively reset all my podcasts, nope - Pocketcasts had me covered. Love you guys, keep up the great work! One suggestion: on Apple Watch app I find myself using the built in audio app more than Pocketcasts while listening to podcasts to use the wheel to control and adjust audio, could you add that to the Pocketcast Watch app as well?

I love this app, and for my personal use, it is superior to Apple Podcasts in all ways. Unfortunately, my friends and I share podcasts a great deal, and the share function in this app does not allow for effective sharing. I think it would be great if sharing could be customized to offer different types of shares. For example, one could share an Apple Podcasts link, a link to the podcast’s site, etc., their choice. I don’t know if all of that is available in the metadata, but if it is, why not use it?

My favorite podcast app, and I have tried them all. Love the act that it is on every operating system, supports everything, and does a great job trimming out the dead air and intros to get me listening fast. Only improvement I would like is the ability to browse and add a single episode of a pod without subscribing to a show. It would also be nice if the plus button to add was still there when you are inside your filters.

When I first open the app in the morning on that way to the gym, there is no way to tell what is in the queue to be played next. I have to start playing a random podcast in order to have access to that list. It takes many steps to build the playlist I want at the gym each morning. 1. Give me access to the playing queue apart from a playing podcast 2. Give me the option for manual sort on playlists. Make that a third option HANDOFF Handoff allows me to use the same app on my iPad, iMac and iPhone. When I am playing a podcast on my iPhone I like to switch to my iPad and keep playing once in the office. Instead of opening the pocketcast app that is on my iPad, it opens safari to the pocketcast website on my iPad. This is not the correct operation. Pocketcast on all my devices need to be able to accept handoff. Additionally, as I play a podcast on my iPhone, and I stop and want to hand off to my iPad, the iPad does not have an updated time. So I may have 15 minutes left on the podcast on my iPhone, but the iPad things I have 32 minutes left This is so close to the best. Just a little more. Hopefully the next chapter will give us that

Only recently have I dived into the world that is podcasts and I’ve loved it. I started off on the stock iOS App (free), moved to Castbox (free), and now I’m here. Pocket Casts is aesthetically pleasing and allows viewing of most, if not all, podcasts. A list of pros and cons below: Pros: Beautiful and simplistic design. Trim Silence feature is great. Ability to create playlists with certain characteristics is useful at times. Cons: Sync across devices (like my iPad) is shotty and only works some of the time. You have to subscribe to a channel in order to view episodes and episode descriptions. No ‘number of episodes’ on each channel like in Castbox. No in channel search like in Castbox. Every time I subscribe to a channel, the podcast episodes are majority marked as “played”, so I have to load all episodes and then mark them as “unplayed”. The app is good but I keep going back to Castbox because of these cons.

Pros include: (1) notifications and customization of same is phenomenal; (2) listening stats are next-level and demonstrate extraordinary attention to detail; and (3) dark theme and icon settings are most welcome. I had a list of cons, all of which stemmed from a lack of understanding on my part: (A) list by episode with option to sort by date (solved with customizable lists that offer myriad options above and beyond anything I have seen); (B) add to play next or add to up next without downloading (solved once I learned that playback settings must be set to stream by default); and (C) play icon to the left of download icon so that users can engage the function without having to tap and hold (solved when stream by default was selected). Pocket Casts leaves the stock Podcasts app light years behind (in so many ways including its UI, customization, player options, and device cache management), providing a seamless user experience. Then there’s the fact that it exists in near-perfect form on Android and iOS and has online support for user profiles and preferences that transfer between devices. It seems like a contradiction, but here you get the best of platform support and agnosticism.

tom5304's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 5/26/18 8:22 PM
I just gave Castro a good trial, and though it’s really good, it can’t beat PocketCasts. PocketCasts is still the simplest, easiest podcast player I’ve used. Overcast doesn’t even work for me; way too buggy. Apple’s Podcast app is too limited and quirky (it won’t let you download a podcast episode over 140mb, etc.) I’m not bothered (yet) about PocketCasts being sold, although I can’t see why anyone would buy it unless they were going to change it to serve their own interests. Seems like simple common sense. But I’ll keep an open mind about the sale and take things as they come. I’ll add a fifth star when PocketCasts adds support for password protected podcasts, which I’m betting is just around the corner, since it helps podcasters monetize their podcasts.
noalarms's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 5/24/18 6:04 PM

lucahimself's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 5/24/18 3:16 PM
This would be a great app, except that when I choose a larger system font, the app does not change the font it uses to display the list of podcasts. So I can't use it in the car, where I do not always have my reading glasses.
CptnJackSpearow's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 5/24/18 1:17 AM
If it just had better chromecast support. Since apple’s podcasting app doesn’t support chromecast, I really think any 3rd party app worth its salt (or at least worth 4 bucks) should provide adequate chromecast support to justify paying for it over the standard app. That’s the reason I paid for it and I did like it when it was working, very clean and organized, none of the cluttered and bloated feel of other cast apps. Unfortunately, the chromecast play was always spotty, often taking multiple tries to connect/play, jumping back to the beginning when pausing, playing, or disconnecting to play on headphones. Recently, it has stopped working altogether. All podcasts just say buffering when trying to cast them, it happens on my SO’s app as well so I know it’s not my phone. Other casting apps work just fine so the app has to be the culprit. At this point I’m looking for a better option, gonna save this on the phone though and hope it gets fixed so I can go back to my otherwise favorite app.

I think it’s strange that you can’t just listen to an episode of a podcast without subscribing first. There is also no way to search for specific episodes of a podcast, which I’ve found to be annoying when looking for an episode among 200 episodes. I guess this app might be better for users who only plan to subscribe and listen to entire series, rather than someone listening to interview-style podcasts with specific episodes.

Skipping a set amount of each podcast, and being able to have my favorites in an online archive are the highlights. Playback speed introduces noise no matter how slow or fast, and the auto trim doesn’t work consistently. Have to use the up next playlist instead of just creating one of my own that automatically sorts things as I want them.

I’ve been using the app since 2015. Before this app, I never cared for podcasts. Using this app has brought a whole new world of entertainment. ShiftJelly is one of my favorite developers. However, He sold it to NPR. While the developer says nothing will happen to pocket casts and that’ll it get better in the months to come, we’ve heard that from developers who sold their company. Pinterest bought Fleksy and almost killed it. Microsoft bought Wunderlist which is on life support, and SwiftKey which got bloated and Sunrise which was by far the best calendar app and killed it with no feature parity. I hope this app doesn’t go the way of those. I want these huge companies to stop destroying apps and wish the best for the future of Pocket Casts.

Cannot create a playlist with the podcasts you want to listen to. Like one for business, one for school, one for fun. This is certainly not worth $4

I’ve had pocket cast for a year and upon downloading it and switching over my podcast player to pcast, my life was changed forever. It allowed me to optimize and maximize my podcast game. I’ve reached out to them before about a suggestion about seeing the episodes you’ve played, and they implemented it (albeit I’m sure it wasn’t directly bc of my suggestion). I love the stats because it makes me feel like I’ve been mentally productive, listening to and absorbing views and opinions of intelligent people. It is so well-organized and aesthetically pleasing. The podcasts you’re subscribed to are displayed via their cover picture, the list of episodes you’ve downloaded and new releases are very easy to see and navigate. I am a loyal, paying customer. 👍

For some reason pocket casts is killing my battery more than Facebook. I have an iPhone X on iOS 11.3 and I download the podcasts instead of streaming. So I can’t understand why it’s smashing my battery so hard. I love this app, not sure if its my phone cuz I did a reset as well. Or if it’s 11.3 but either way it’s destroying my battery life.

I would like it better if they just stayed in order of newest to oldest and just greying out there played ones. If these features were to appear it would be five stars all the way for me!
Levets.us's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 4/30/18 4:16 AM
Not sure it’s fair to mark an episode as completed if you decided to skip it instead. Feeling guilty every time I swipe left. Would really appreciate a skip/delete option if swiped the other side.

Great app, use it all the time for my podcasts at home and in the car. Everything syncs with my account. Also bonus it supports video rss which makes it great for all the GiantBomb video content I consume. It also works great with the web app.
dvermaak01's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 4/29/18 3:18 AM
A solid app. But I have some frustrations With it. In my opinion the ability to discover new podcasts is extremely poor on this app. 1. When checking out a new podcast, the app won't allow you to browse previous episodes without subscribing to that podcast. Why? 2. I'd like the ability to search for episodes as well. For instance, if I search for "Bill Burr", I'll see not just his own podcast, but but episodes of other podcasts that he's been on as well. 3. And how about a search feature! One of the podcasts I'm subscribed to has thousands of episodes. If I want to find a specific episode, I have to scroll though all the episodes and go solely off the episodes title.

update 2: (April 2018)-I’m now over a year into Casts, it’s by far the best podcast app (it is a 100% perfect app, and i’ve never said that about any app). I’ve tried several paid podcast apps. One beautiful, amazing feature I just discovered recently: on my cheapo Bluetooth shower speaker (and Bluetooth audio in my car) when you Press the physical track forward/back buttons, Casts bumps your audio + or -15s (or whatever you have app set to)!!! this is amazing and exactly what I was looking for. I was always annoyed how other podcast apps (including the atrocious Apple built in one) would change the podcast playing whenever you hit forward/back track , which is totally pointless and useless. Casts handled this perfectly and does exactly what is logical and reasonable for physically pressing those buttons. Thanks again love this app. Update: I’ve been using podcasts app for a little over a month, and it is still absolutely flawless, it does exactly what I want , perfectly. Please do not waste any time with free apps or anything else, by this app if you listen to podcasts. Ditch the iOS trash built-in podcasts app. (Apple should be ashamed of themselves) Thank you, for writing a fast, clean, easy to use podcast app that properly works with apples built in podcast controls (Ie control center widget, lock screen, etc. on iOS 11). For some reason I foolishly thought that Apple only allowed it’s default/built in podcast app, to access Apple podcast content (ie the shows). So I never thought to find a third-party podcast. On iOS 10 I thought the Apple podcast app was a little awkward but worked fine for what I needed (accessing and the streaming the daily updated shows from podcasts I listen to, each day). iOS 11 podcast app was updated and is simply atrocious, and frankly is trash interface and usability wise. It is super difficult to navigate, near impossible to get to a shows latest episode (or even find out/confirm if the days episode has been published yet) and actions that required one or two taps on the ios10 podcast app, now require 3 to 6 space on the iOS 11 podcast app. It’s frankly trash in typical apple doesn’t listen to any feedback from users, simply search the web you’ll see many users of taking the time to write long and detailed posts about how horrible the podcast iOS 11 app is. Regardless of iOS 11 trash podcast app, that update led me to this app and I’m super happy with it! it was well worth the four dollars. Thanks!

I bought almost Podcasts apps. I think Pocket Casts is the best for me: 1. Support the video podcasts, Castro cannot; 2. Backstage is very stable，I can subscribe all of my favorite podcasts，but cannot subscribe the “Exponent” in the Apple Podcasts. 3. Sometimes castro cannot refresh the playlist. Keep going, thanks all you guys’

Update: it's nice to see a developer respond to feedback. This is one of my first page apps. I recently switched from downcast; I was looking for something that handled playlists better than that application does. One of my issues with is fact that I really don't need playlists, I want to order my podcasts on the fly, enter Pocket Casts "Up Next" feature. This feature makes it extremely simple to add a podcast to listen to next, without having to subscribe to said podcast. I would recommend Pocket Casts, based on the "Up Next" feature alone. A couple of suggestions: I'd like to see a list of available podcasts when discovering new podcasts. Right now you have to subscribe to see a full list. Also, the ability to apply global settings to all new podcasts is a bit hidden under the name "Storage & Data Use" and doesn't include all settings you can make to individual podcasts. That said, I quickly deleted Downcast from my iPhone after just a week of using Pocket Casts. Great job.

This app is literally the best podcast app available on the iOS App Store! The default podcast app is horrible, and everything else costs a $10+ subscription. This app is great! Almost perfect! What would make it perfect would be playlists. I think that this was a feature on the Android version of the app, so I was a little disappointed that it wasn’t in the iOS version. Honestly, if you added playlists I couldn’t possibly think of a reason to rate this less than 5 stars. But for now I’ll leave it at 4 in hopes that playlists would be added! Filters are great, but that’s not really what I want. I want the ability to create something for my constant driving routes. Just select this and that episode and add them to a playlist. The “Play Next” function is essentially this, but not exactly what I’m looking for.
Skylar C. 's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 4/19/18 4:20 AM
I wish I could view and listen to a podcasts recent episodes without subscribing to the podcast! Also, if you play a podcast after reading its description you have to minimize the description and tap the player on the bottom of the app to gain access to the playback controls. This app is so close to being perfect!

yungstud's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 4/16/18 4:26 PM
This app does a few things right. I like the trim silence. I like the playlist creation. And I like how easy the app is to use overall. Unfortunately, the good qualities stop there. Many of the features I was looking for when I was trying to find a replacement podcast app were those that were in the Apple podcast app before they did the big update that basically ruined it. The first major one was being able to have the app automatically download new episodes without having to open it. The second was easily being able to continue playing the next downloaded episode after listening to the first one. This app sort of handles the second one, although I have to go out of my way to “play all,” but lacks on the first. There are some other good features I’ve seen in other apps that this one lacks, such as the ability to prioritize podcasts within playlists. This app is kind of weird the way it treats streaming or downloading episodes. It’s all or nothing with that setting which means if it’s set to download, you have to manually select each individual episode and tell it to download or stream if you forgot to download new ones before you left WiFi. All these things are kind of minor compared to the one extremely glaring issue with adding new podcasts. When you go to look at new podcasts to add, trying to decide if you want to subscribe to them, you can’t see episode titles or descriptions before subscribing to give you an idea of what the episodes are about. Before you subscribe, you only get to read the two or three sentence description of the podcast. I have found this extremely annoying and it leads me to use other apps for research. I have to say that there are better apps out there that are free and aren’t so frustrating. I may go back to one of them.

Make sure to get the web version/Mac app as well, because this is the only podcast app you’ll ever need! I’m so happy that it supports the Chromecast. I finally had it with Apple Podcasts after the 11.3 iOS update. My playlist had disappeared and I didn’t seem to be able to build a new one. It was the last straw. I looked into other podcatchers, but I didn’t want to deal with ads. So I splurged on Pocket Casts, and I’m so glad I did. All my shows are available, the settings are better than I ever dreamed, and the playlist management is the best. No looking back. Apple Podcasts is dead to me. Pocket Casts is the best.

Love the concept, but incredibly, incredibly buggy. Lots of areas with poorly thought-out UX, crashes, and basically non-functional if you try to use it with Google Home/Google Cast devices. (Loses track of where you are in the podcast, won't show all cast devices or sometimes any, hard to set up, etc) I contacted the developer and they weren't interested in addressing any of that.
obscurecountryfolk's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 4/1/18 10:27 PM
What a lovely app you've built! It works exceptionally well at handling the numerous series I partake in. I have only one issue; occasionally while an episode is playing, the progress bar on the lockscreen widget won't continue. It won't show the correct minute I'm currently listening to nor will the progress line move. A simple work around is pressing pause then play, but it'd be nice if I didn't need a workaround. My suggestions/requests for a "better" user experience have likely been considered before, but I've yet to see them implemented.. 1. I'd like to be able to mass-delete downloaded episodes. It's simply too tiresome to have to select an episode and tap three times to delete it. Please add a simple trash can icon in the "Downloads" section which will enable selecting of multiple episodes. 2. Please implement more sorting techniques within each series. Currently the options are "old to new" and "new to old." I'd like to see the ability to sort by episode temporal length "shortest to longest" and "longest to shortest" as well as by file size "largest to smallest" and "smallest to largest." 3. Episode Search! The tool in the main interface which allows one to search for each show is handy, but I'd like to see a per-show episode search tool. Perhaps a "Search for Episodes" option could be placed amidst each show's tri-dot overflow key functions. 4. Add Offline Mode. Although there is a downloads list, it can difficult to scroll through such a long list. Perhaps a "Google Play Music"-esque switch in the menu could be enabled so that when viewing a series, only downloaded episodes would be shown. 5. Colour adaptive show badges, please! This is somewhat minute, but having every shows episode-count flag be red is less aesthetically pleasing than flags that are able to match with the most prominent colour of the series' cover art. Whew! That's a lot, and I understand and accept that it may take a while for the team to implement all of these features (if they appeal to the team at all). I am thankful, however, for your commitment to building a spectacular podcast app. Thanks!

This is my favorite podcast app. I really wish it had better navigation of episodes. Especially with podcasts with a lot of episodes when you want to sort “oldest to newest” it doesn’t load the first one, just previous 10 or so. It’s very inconvenient if you want to listen from the start.

If I was on Android I imagine I’d keep using it. I can no longer cast to my vizio with built in chrome cast. I swear I could before. It can cast to my bedroom just fine. After an episode download it no longer shows up in the feed for that podcast. I have to go find it in downloads. Search works if you know the exact title your looking for, but I’m constantly going to the Apple podcast app to search then listen on this. That was originally to just give it a try, now it’s just a pain.

I downloaded this from being dissatisfied with a handful of free podcast apps. A friend using Android recommended it and that it was worth the $$$. I basically still have this app bc I already paid for it but I’m still just as dissatisfied with it but tired of looking. (The #1 feature I’m looking for was to auto-queue podcast episodes to stream based on the last episode I listened to. Not the oldest or newest, most of my podcasts I’m in the middle and want to listen to them sequentially. This app does not do that but gives me some ok features.) Pros: - CarPlay app - Can choose between download or streaming with several swipes - Decent looking interface Cons: - Does not auto queue episodes based on listening history (like all apps I’ve tried) - Confusing switching between Download vs Stream vs Up Next vs “Listened To (assumes you have)” vs “Haven’t listened to but not in my queue” vs Download queue or Stream queue? - Inconsistent queues between CarPlay and iOS app (pls just continue playing the last episode?) I’ve figured out a system to use this but still think I’m not using it as intended. An app that needs a video tutorial is prob doing it wrong but a video tutorial would be better than nothing.

I’m usually fine whenever Apple updates their UI for their own apps every yearly update, but the latest Podcasts app is awful! Clunky and tedious to use, and I’m a tech savvy youth who knows what I’m doing, but even still. Horrible. Sooo, I needed a replacement. “Overcast” is really good, but this “Pocket Casts” is near perfect! Clean and customizable user interface. If you listen to a lot of podcasts, this is worth buying for! Even if Apple fixes their own app for the next iOS update, I’ll be sticking with this one.

tubedogg's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 3/16/18 1:12 AM
I really like it. And it doesn't crash like Apple Podcasts does, so it has that going for it. That said there are a few things I'd like to see added/tweaked: - Ability to view and download a podcast's episodes without subscribing. - In podcast view, grouping by season for those podcasts that support it (see Apple Podcasts app), and grouping by year for those that don't. (Filter lists already group by year, so it's unclear why the view of a single podcast doesn't.) - A download queue that is actually a queue instead of the app trying to download every single queued episode simultaneously. Have a user-defined limit of simultaneous downloads, i.e. 2 or 3. - Add ability to select all and then deselect a few instead of select all being an on/off switch. Along these lines, have a "and future subscriptions" option for podcast filtering. The idea being, I want it to apply to this selected list plus automatically to any podcasts I subscribe to in the future. This option should be a toggle.

Yowzoe's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 2/5/18 11:22 AM
Pocket Casts is more frustrating the longer I use it. It continues to turn on randomly at night, which is a real drag if I forget to close the app. This is been happening for months (and I've let the developers know). Yet it has many features and the look that I prefer to other podcast apps. So I still hope. Here are the continuing issues at the developers seem to ignore from update to update: Now and then all the items in my playlist mysteriously disappear. It's very hard to sort the "Up Next" list, and the layout & usability just need re-vamping. It really takes too much effort to use this app. The "add to next" is just above the "play all from here", which is a design disaster that they should get a clue about. How many times do people accidentally put their finger on "play all from here" and delete their playlist? At the very least it should be a user option to configure. Months ago I could tap on my Bluetooth headset repeatedly to skip to the next podcast – this feature has been removed in the last several updates (I have checked with several Bluetooth headsets). I regularly lose my whole "Up Next" queue, for the umpteenth time, inexplicably. I have a 6s Plus in prime condition, and I don't have any of these kind of problems with other apps. Casts is just too frustrating, and the developers don't seem to care. I'm tired of waiting – the problems just multiply. To add insult to injury, their update changelog text is insipid cutesy stupidity that tells you nothing.

I found the iOS one a pain to use so I started looking for alternatives. After trying out a few free ones I decided to give pocket cast a try too, and I have to say I am pleasantly surprised. It has some of the best features podcasts lovers enjoy - such as speed, silence trim, start from certain time for specific podcasts and volume boost that significantly improve podcast listening experience. The discover page is well designed to introduce new podcasts to listener. I also love the interface design, especially the subscribed podcasts page which allows me to view my podcasts in big grids, small grids or list (please learn from them Apple). And my absolute favorite feature of all is how well it syncs with Sonos! Before pocket cast listening to podcasts on Sonos is kinda a pain, but pocket cast has synchronized the progresses so well that I can just switch between playing on Sonos or my phone back and forth in an instance. Really appreciate the feature as a Sonos and podcast lover. However the system is not perfect yet. It’s still missing important search feature that allows users to search for episodes, which can be quite troublesome when I am just looking for one specific episode of a certain podcast. Moreover there is no universal podcast setting, meaning there’s no way to set the ordering of podcast or the initial seconds skipping without going through the setting of each podcast one by one. It will be great if the pocket cast team can look into these issues. But overall, it’s definitely the best podcast app I have used so far and it’s definitely worth every penny.
Cindyeo's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 2/3/18 12:52 PM
I was so frustrated with the Apple podcast app that I went in search of a better one and have been using this for about 2 months. But you cannot search out a specific episode of a podcast, and you do have to subscribe to a podcast to play a single episode. Now, that doesn’t mean you will automatically get every episode downloaded, you have to go in to each podcast after you subscribe to tell it to download. I also don’t like the fact that all back episodes are shown as played. And it’s really hard to go way back in time to find an old episode. I do like the fact that I can set up a downloaded and unplayed filter, so I go there when choosing something to listen to in the car. So I am still using both apps, depending on what I want to do.

Loved it until this version. Going to the discover menu gives me an internet connection error. Can’t subscribe to any new podcasts. Also, creating an account gives me a registration error. I’ll change my rating if they fix it, but until then I’ll switch back to the Apple podcast app

I hope the developers read this review. I use this app for several years and have loved it. It’s been my most used app. But very recently all I get is a lengthy red splash screen and then it crashes. Sometimes after many multiple attempts it may ultimately work, or not. I use it on my iPhone X. I hope you are getting the crash data. I would love a response from the developers. And I would be happy to answer any questions that might help you debug this issue. In the meantime I would not recommend this app to anyone. I will be happy to update to 5 stars once this is corrected.
Shammyet's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 2/22/18 1:59 AM
I don’t understand how the ratings are so high on this podcast. I bought it thinking it must offer something over overcast and I was wrong. It’s not user friendly at all. Personal opinion is it’s not better looking. It has some strange things like you can’t download episodes unless you subscribe. Its fails to download episodes and then you have to troubleshoot to listen. Don’t even get me started on the sync issues between devices. It’s just corky. Further more upsetting is I emailed the developers and no response after days. I could go up in rating but the lack of care from them is a major burn for me. Very disappointing. I really want to like this but, oh well.
AJrajrajr321947281's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 2/20/18 10:03 PM
The app is okay but it takes WAY to many clicks to play an episode and get to the screen where you can pause and fast forward. This is definitely not worth the money when you can get free apps that do the same thing.
davidreview's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 2/2/18 4:01 PM
Had to dock one star but other than the one issue it’s still one of my favorite players. All this time and this app has never added the ability to use audio effects WITHOUT downloading the episode first? I don’t download the episodes I listen to so being not being able to use those effects is a huge con. With the Android version having this feature for a long time now I’m surprised it’s not here yet. That’s the reason I use another podcast player. Because it allows those effects while steaming. If it added that feature this would be my go to player. Having said that this is one of the best podcast players around. That and with me using iOS and Android at times being able to use this on both platforms is another pro. That and the ability to watch video. Although I don’t use the video player as much it’s a nice touch.
LogicalApex's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 2/2/18 12:22 AM
Apple Podcasts has consistently run downhill. Every iteration has less and less features. I was recommended this app and I have to say I am very pleased with it. It has Sonos support, web version (extra $9 on time), and syncing all around. Great app and highly recommended. Keep up the great work developers 👍🏾
FutureDPT's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 2/16/18 6:49 PM
I love the app, but the discover feature is weak. I literally open up the apple podcast app every now and then to see what new podcasts that I’ve never heard of are worth a listen because the discover feature is so lacking in this app.

The only reason I got this app easy to cast the podcasts. Now that doesn’t work.

That pretty much sums it up. This app is amazing. I was super pumped it was in the app store when I switched from Android. 2 e-props.
SouthMcMerlin's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 2/14/18 3:46 PM
I’ve had the app for a year and half now and I enjoy the heck out of it! How it looks, how it runs, the features, just everything! But in the new update I’m slightly bummed that in the previous version I could 3D Touch on iOS and mark as played from the app icon and now that has been removed and it has removed that simple yet greatly appreciated convenience. Please bring it back!!
Tad Davis's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 2/14/18 3:37 PM
This is the slickest podcast player I’ve found. The app is organized a little differently from most, and managing the “up next” queue looked daunting at first. The flexibility of the app means some extra effort starting out. But it only took a couple of days to get the hang of it, and now I have things exactly the way I want them. Comes with a watch app too, which is useful.
UrbanDude's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 2/14/18 2:36 AM
According to the app stats I’ve used it to listen to 180 days of podcasts, so it deserves my first app review: It’s great. 180 days = half a year without sleep. I can’t think of another app/service that’s brought more joy to my life. It’s intuitive, unobtrusive, and works 100% of the time, every time. Nothing is perfect, but this is close.

Magicman_22's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 2/1/18 1:53 AM
Honestly, right now, you’re probably better off with the stock apple Podcast app. This app looks great, but is missing some stuff that’s so basic i have no idea how it was missed. One of which is they you must subscribe to a podcast to play an episode.... what? That doesn’t even make sense?? Second, it marks like all but the last 2 episodes of a podcast as “Played”, regardless of whether or not you actually have listened to them, which is really annoying if you want to go back into a podcast. The last thing, on the topic of going back into a podcast is that the organization is horrible. There is no seasons, no years, no nothing. It’s just a reverse chronological order list of the episodes. Does it look nice? Yeah, for sure, but it just misses some real basics that make it almost unusable for me, and definitely not better than the stock app :/ Has real promise, the design is amazing but it just doesn’t cut it right now

This had been an awesome app, but the iPad app really went downhill with the last update. I don’t remember having to press the left corner to close the podcast selection before or having to do extra steps to pick the play next function. Played apps seem to disappear altogether.
Meister E's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/9/18 12:40 PM
Was my go to podcast app, but Version 7 is awful. For the sake of something new, the developers made a good user interface complex and clunky. Going to find a better option.
BigB 8083's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/9/18 12:40 PM
In the efforts to make the app look “prettier”, by doing so, has made the app less functional. The main feature I loved the most was the ability to download all the episodes within a podcast I am subscribed to. Now, I have to go to each episode, click on the episode and click on the download button...for every single episode!
Techneutral's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/9/18 12:40 PM
I have used and loved this app for years and had an Overarching auto download and cleanup policies, as well as overrides set for podcasts that for one reason or another I might want to keep more episodes of. This used to be an extremely clean looking easy to use application with extremely powerful options for managing podcast libraries. The current state of this app is no longer powerful enough to recommend over the free Apple provided app. I am going to give the developers a little more time to make this app powerful enough to recommend again but in its current state I can see no reason to download, much less pay for this app. This app needs to bring back the ability to set granular archive setting overrides on a per podcast basis for it to be useful to me. These settings would be more powerful if they go back to a keep x number of episodes before auto archiving. It needs to be a top level setting and provide overrides on a per podcast basis. I would also like to see the ability to exclude a podcast form any filter that exists ie new releases.

Update: 1 star -> 2 star b/c one option that I thought was gone is still there. Pocket Cast used to be the best, I raved about it friends but NO MORE, IT’S RUINED. The criticism isn’t about the look, it’s about the function. I can adapt to a new look, but when you make it more complicated to get to the options that used to easy to get tor or get rid of them entirely, that’s BAD DESIGN. UI/UX should be about feeling good, and fewer more intuitive clicks to get where you want. -[updated] Downloading, you can’t just click and download an episode anymore. You have to go into the individual podcast episode and download (if you don’t want to have pocketcast download every new episode). So you have to click thru more screens. -auto-clear no more? You used to be able to specify how the auto-deleting of old podcasts worked, nope can’t find the options. This features NEEDS to come back. -WORST CHANGE: how the the playlists work. You used to be able to swipe the bottom and quickly add/remove things from playlist, or move a podcast on the playlist up or down. Now it’s super cumbersome and you have to do 2-3 actions more in order to get same effect. Honestly it’s no longer intuitive as it used to be and deserves the low reviews. Developers FIX THIS, this app now is same level or worse as other free apps, so why should ppl pay!?

Hezmana 's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/8/18 12:38 PM
I loved this app now to view downloaded podcasts you have to into your profile and then chose downloaded. The old version this was on the main page, but now it is almost hidden. This extra step is very annoying. The app has started to freeze and crash while performing certain activities. When I try and unsubscribe from a podcast the app freezes and eventually crashes. Also when I try and archive a podcast it continues to show on the download page. Something has happened to the developers of this app, going from a great go to Podcast app to being on my delete if no improvement in the next few releases. Sad 😪

This app was purchased by NPR and other affiliates earlier in 2018. Their first move after purchasing the app was to destroy everything that users liked about it. It is now an unintuitive, heavy, confusing mess. This should have been released as a different app. Well, it probably shouldn’t have been released at all in its current state. The new owners obviously got cocky and thought they were upgrading their purchase... maybe test market next time? Just release version 6 as a free app. Or listen to your customers, swallow your pride, and revert back to version 6 and release your awful redesign under a different name so that it can die in the App Store. That’s the only way you are going to save it at this point.

I've been listening to Podcasts since before the iPhone existed and have tried nearly all iOS podcasting apps. This app has a stellar interface and granular control over playlists and settings that others lack. It also can handle a lot of podcasts and its filter settings are fantastic. I also like the tile view which Overcast and others lack. I've tried thousands of apps as a developer and this is in my top 5. Seriously, great update.
HiGeoff's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/8/17 10:18 PM
[2017-1208] Just a quick update and an ask to make this great app even better. Would you be able to make Casts available as Alexa skill? For example, I have a filter with the latest episodes of my subscription and play them in the order of the last one added. It will be cool if I can ask Alexa to play that filter (set as my default filter) instead of reaching out to my phone and play. Sorry I’m just too lazy. But it’ll be cool right? :-) ——- Better than anything else, stitcher, rssradio etc.
George Kramer's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/6/18 12:39 PM
The update to version 7 turned THE best podcast app into an abomination. What could be done in 2 taps now takes 10. No explanation or guide regarding what new these unworkable features accomplish. Want to find new podcasts? The discovery tab almost certainly won’t work. Want to have the app run in the background? The app likely won’t allow you to pause/skip/etc when you return to it. Like having playlists and settings for certain podcasts? They'll be useless and won’t work or won’t be applied to future downloads. This is one of the first non-essential apps I’ve ever paid for (excluding purchases made for work or school) and I got more than my money’s worth with version 6. This is also the first review I’ve ever left and I cannot possibly emphasize my utter disappointment with this app enough.

I left Apple Podcast app for a reason. I’ve been happy with Pocket Cast up until this recent update. EyesBleedDefiance's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/6/18 12:39 PM
What was once a pleasant, easy to use podcast app has now become a confusing mess. There are buttons that exist with no explanation what they do. I used to have archived episodes that sat at the top for easy access and now everything is mixed together. Who came up with these “advancements”? Fix it back and I’ll adjust my rating. In he meantime I’m shopping for alternatives.
GBGG09876's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/6/18 12:39 PM
Before, you used to be able to tap and hold an episode, then download it or add it to your playlist. Now the only options when you tap and hold are “play all from here” and “archive all from here.” This is SO unhelpful. You now have to click on each individual episode to download it and add it to your playlist. It takes so much longer to organize a playlist with several different podcasts. Further, the new update doesn’t interact well with Google home. When I finish an episode via casting on Google home, it still shows up on my phone as unplayed. I’m so disappointed with this update. PLEASE go back to the simplicity that made this app so wonderful or I’ll be going back to Apple Podcasts!
arollingstoneee's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/6/18 12:39 PM
As someone who was a big fan of this app, the last update is horrendous for users. My favorite part about this app was that i could go to a show with 100s of episodes, download some that piqued my interest, and then those downloaded episodes would automatically be pinned to the top of that show’s feed. No more—and why? What a horrible update. Thinking of switching back to Castbox. And when i tried to make a custom list of downloaded shows and sort them....you can only sort by when they were downloaded, not by show. Very disappointed.
DoMo D.'s Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/6/18 12:39 PM
I used to love this app. I wanted to sync up all my devices and have a good user interface. This new update has made the app terrible to use. Played episodes stay next to unplayed. The way the app has always worked to skip episodes and see show notes changed and are cumbersome. Playback speed settings are global now so I have to change it every time I switch podcasts. They need to release the old version of the app for free for those of us that paid for it. This new version is terrible.
brazen521's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/6/18 12:39 PM
First off, I really like this app. I’ve been using it for about four months mostly in the car using CarPlay. It was never rocksolid, there were a couple of graphical things that it would do sometimes but the latest update has really messed up the CarPlay functionality. Anytime I’m listening to something and get interrupted by a phone call or decide to play a song or anything else that interrupts the podcast, when I switch back to Pocket Casts it hangs. I will tell it to play and it wont. Eventually the interface stops responding completely and it crashes. Usually after re-launching it will work again until it gets interrupted, but the whole point of CarPlay is that you can use your apps without getting distracted, and this is not accomplishing that any longer. I hope these issues get fixed and make this app wonderful again.
moteky's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/6/18 12:39 PM
They took a simple interface and ruined it. Somehow my half-played episodes can no longer be part of a list. I can’t start playback from the beginning of a list any longer. What’s the point of filters if the only viable option for playback is “Up Next”? It’s complete junk now, I wish I could roll back my version, but that’s a whole other issue. Does anyone know of a better podcast app?
JRF_USA's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/6/18 12:39 PM
I wrote to the developers and they confirmed that Auto Clean-Up was removed. No reason given. Now the app is a memory hog. Absolutely absurd. Check your storage. In previous versions I had Auto Clean-Up set to keep only the most recent episode which was crucial for storage management. Archive is NOT a replacement for the previous Auto Clean-Up. Good-bye Pocket Casts.
randirocks's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/6/18 12:39 PM
I really dislike the interface changes. I am big on queue management and the ability to add things to my queue in a specific order. The new queue options killed my ability to create my normal queue. Also, I download episodes to listen to on the subway and the option to easily download episodes has changed entirely. I hate the archive option and hate not being able to just mark older episodes that I’m skipping without archiving them and having them fall off of my screen. I also don’t like where the queue sits on the screen. I’m going to switch to another app which is super annoying because I loved this app for so long and it’s been an absolute mainstay for me.

I’ve used and loved Pocket Casts on Android for the past five years and was excited to see the iOS version when I recently switched back to an iPhone. However, this version is extremely frustrating and confusing compared to its Android counterpart. Key issues for me: - The nav is generally hard to figure out. The slide actions don’t do what I expected. - I looked for 20 minutes to find a way to make a playlist. How is this not a feature on iOS? I always make road trip playlists ahead of time before a trip but now that’s impossible without forcing it all into Up Next. - Pulling up the details/description on an episode used to be as simple as swiping left on the player. Now it’s hidden behind a tiny button that no one should ever try to find while driving. - Android version lets you select how many episodes to show in each podcast’s episode list before archiving old ones. Now it only does it by week or month. That’s a horrible option for daily podcasts. There are other things that are annoying me. The downgrade in Pocket Casts on iOS over its own Android app has been one of the most frustrating parts of an otherwise enjoyable return to iPhone.

Really, how to download an old episode to play on my commute to work tomorrow? This update either can’t do it or it’s hidden under some random design principle that only the designer understands. It used to be so simple. Now it’s just an unintelligible mess.
willt30's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/5/18 12:40 PM
It’s way too hard to download podcasts, and now they “feed” view is much worse
Darth Sarah's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/5/18 12:40 PM
Since the recent update (which I hate for a lot of reasons) the biggest problem I’m having is that the app crashes every time I get into the car and it attempts to connect to Bluetooth. Even if it connects and starts playing, it’ll crash at least once after a few minutes. It also crashes when I connect it to my Bluetooth speaker at home. Even though I’ve paid for this app three times on three separate phones, it’s becoming completely unusable for me. I’m extremely disappointed in PocketCasts

Eek. Hopefully they can right this ship
idkAtom's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/5/18 12:40 PM
With the redesigned interface in 7.0, there was no way to see whether a podcast was in the up-next queue or not. That has been fixed since then with a new icon indicating that. I hope other quirks get fixed soon as well. The Apple Watch app with 7.0 is great. Uses crown for volume control, as it should be. Text color changes according to podcast artwork. Great job.
Mattimclellan11's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/5/18 12:40 PM
I bought this because apple drugged up their podcast app. I would get another if I didn’t already buy this one. The old played/unplayed setup was so much easier and better organized than the new archived setup. Also, the app has been just skipping over episodes in my playlist and automatically deleting them. Changing playlist order is still a pain in the but. Can only drag an episode the length of the screen and half the time the episode just jumps back to where it was. Things were fine before.
Paolo Gil's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/5/18 12:40 PM
Pocket Cast used to be my favorite podcast app until the last major update. I appreciate the apps being updated and refined but in this case, when a feature that I totally use is removed, it’s hard for me to keep using the app. The previous feature “Episodes to Keep” is something that I really appreciate. As someone having a lot of podcasts, podcast management is THE differenciator between many podcast apps. But unfortunately it has been removed here in this update - or replaced by the AUTO-ARCHIVE feature. I don’t mind the feature, it basically does the same thing as “Episodes to Keep” except for one major difference and that is the ability to customize it per podcast. Since podcast episodes have different frequencies - some daily, some weekly, and some in between, it is difficult to manage them with a global setting. I hope PocketCast adds the ability to change Auto-Archive settings per podcast or enable the old feature. For now, I’m going back to Downcast.
Jackson Swan's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/5/18 12:40 PM
In previous versions there was an option to download all episodes of a podcast in one go. Now it seems like you need to individually download each episode. Please add this option back in. Besides that, the app is great if not a little confusing when you first begin using it.
17431977's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/5/18 12:40 PM
The update it pretty, but it seems overly complicated now. The reason this app was so amazing was how simple and easy it was to listen and organize to episodes within a podcast. It was better when played episodes were listed separately and it’s annoying how you can’t hide or show archived episodes for individual podcasts - it’s all or nothing. It feels cluttered and fussy now. This was my most used and favorite app but I’m looking for a replacement now.

SDeaneS's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/5/18 12:40 PM
App is no longer usable the way I need it to be. Switched to iCatcher! which has much of the same functionality that this one used to and seems to also take up less space than this one. Really just want my money back. Never would have paid for an app with a 3.3 star rating!
It's just stacking cans's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/4/18 12:42 PM
Where did the option to limit how many downloaded episodes to keep? For the subscriptions I only occasionally listen to this was a great way to have the most recent handful of episodes without burning through storage space. Now either I don’t have those episodes because I have to turn off the auto download feature (who remembers to crawl through all their podcasts before boarding a plane?) OR I have no storage availability because pocketcasts has been crazy downloading with out limit. Neither choice is okay - manually management is not why I used this app Please carry this feature forward

Mike8285's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/4/18 12:42 PM
Before the update, the app was great. I don't understand why they changed it. They took out simple features that everyone would use when listening to podcasts. I'll have to find a new podcast app.
altersparck's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/4/18 12:42 PM
The latest update removed management features like having only one episode downloaded, useful for podcasts with daily episodes. I thought the archive function was the same thing with a new name, but it’s not. Archiving is much, much less useful. I guess I’ll be moving to a different app now.
JRF_USA's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/4/18 12:42 PM
Auto Clean-Up is gone. I wrote to the developers and they replied that Auto Clean-Up was removed. No reason given. In previous versions I had Auto Clean-Up set to keep only the most recent episode - but now the app is a memory hog. Auto Clean-Up was crucial for storage management. Archive is NOT a replacement for the previous Auto Clean-Up. Good-bye Pocket Casts.
ElSteve9's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/4/18 12:42 PM
Even after searching through the online help, there seems to be no way to delete an episode. It used to be as easy as swiping the episode away when you were done with it. Other apps have a way to automate this. Pocket Casts used to be great. Now they’ve removed super basic functions. Look elsewhere for a podcast app.
Spencer "Thunderball" Thayer's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/4/18 12:42 PM
This was my podcast app for the last, well forever, and now v7 has me looking for another app. Need to sync your podcasts? It used to be easy – click sync. Now? Sign out and sign back in, wait an hour, oh and remember to keep tapping the screen because it’ll stop syncing if your screen locks. I went back to Overcast for the first time in years.
Ssm787's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/4/18 12:42 PM
In previous version if you wanted to quickly download some podcast before you head out the door all you had to do was swipe left on the player and all the play signs would turn to pluses. From there just tap the pluses they would be download and your ready to go. Now you have to open up each podcast card and select the download. Way more annoying than before. Also I’m not a fan of the new look ether.
Chip Fillingane's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/4/18 12:42 PM
Removing the ability to control how many episodes are downloaded has ruined this app for me. It appears that automatically skipping the first 30 sec has also been removed. I have been looking for an alternative and sadly none use the artwork grid ☹️. Oh well, I'll still be switching anyway.
Walt_B_'s Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/4/18 12:42 PM
The last update ruined the experience for me. So many issues! No more landscape mode, so I can’t read the episode titles. No more swipe-to-archive. No more one-tap to add episodes to the Up Next playlist. No more “download all” option. Everything that used to be simple now takes at least 3 different taps.
speener-d's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/4/18 12:42 PM
The lack of auto cleanup is a killer. Why remove this feature? Used to be able to set podcasts to only keep a certain number of podcasts - an important feature if you subscribe to daily podcasts - otherwise your “up next” list can get out of control.
Clarkezone's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/4/18 12:42 PM
The sync’ing in the recent update appears better but one fatal flaw still is that it doesn’t appear to save a sync point when pausing. Typically, i arrive at work, pause, resume on a different device and it’s like 1-2 minutes earlier on. If you did a “force” sync when an endpoint pauses, there would be a better experience. Still frustrated that you can’t easily download episodes in the up next list, and the playlist being down rather than to the right still feels wrong.
Biggus_Dickus's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/4/18 12:42 PM
The thing that lead me to pay for this app after Apple ruined the default Podcasts app was auto-cleanup. It’s all I ask for. It’s so obvious too, why would I want to micro-manage my library? Most of the podcasts I listen to bi-weekly political podcasts, so the 30 day cleanup is not fast enough. I want to keep two episodes, is that too much to ask?
Penguinchem's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/4/18 12:42 PM
With the newest update my playlist will no longer advance. I hit “play all from here” and it will play one podcast and then stop. It’s getting really annoying especially when driving.
matthebe's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/4/18 12:42 PM
I don't normally write reviews. This app was perfect. It was the only app I carried over when I switched from my Android phone. This new system of archiving episodes is the absolute worst though. Episodes now randomly pop in and out of my playlists as 3 seconds sometimes remain. Even marking them archived manually doesn't keep them out for long. That's just the most annoying issue. This app has become a chore to use. I am now searching for a replacement to an app that I used to recommend to everybody.

Do Not Download Updates! Do Not Purchase! 4.8 -> 3.5 stars within days of releasing "update." Absolute failure of design, UI testing, and understating the user base. Arrogant a-holes unwilling to accept criticism and adjust course accordingly. Previous app version was awesome. Version 7 is terrible. The interface is cluttered. Nothing is intuitive. Complete redesigns should be new apps. Restore 6.x.x code base. Release 7.0 garbage as separate app. Now using iCatcher. [update] Rating still falling. Down to 3.3 stars. The a-hole developers are argumentative and unable to accept constructive criticism when contacted about app issues. missjodes23's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/4/18 12:42 PM
I migrated from Apple podcast due to frustration about a year ago. My only criticisms of pocketcast was that podcasts were marked played when subscribing to a new app and the inability to search for single episodes in the store. I don’t believe either have been changed but A LOT has. I like the archives feature and the episode searching with an already subscribed app Can we also search within a filter? I also like the podcast description option. I am very frustrated that I can longer add an episode to the up next list from the podcast list (hold it and a menu comes up) but I have to click through to the episode. Likewise to play something already in the up next section requires a click through rather than a click but I do like that you can read the description from this list if you don’t remember what the ep is about. I really liked the old up next section where you swiped right and left between the ep, description and list. This update requires more effort to move downward between the list and back up to the episode and lots more effort to click through to episode description. I do like that’s it’s now easier to identify that an ep is downloaded in this list. I really like the toggle buttons up top of the filter lists. But the new layout for setting them up is super confusing and I need to use the toggles to fixit. It also seems like there are less options to filter by. I also like the listen history but don’t understand why this is in my settings and not a filter. Generally this update will take A LOT of getting used to. It took way too long to setback up and navigate when I opened after update. Would like more settings to turn features on and off rather than having to accept update changes that don’t work for me.

This was my go-to app. I’m incredibly busy, very little time to sit and figure out anew how to operate this app and I rely on my auto loads to keep me up and aware on the road. I still haven’t had time to sit and figure this out. I’ve been relying on my audacity audiobook library to carry me through. I’m soooo far behind on podcasts now.
Media001's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/4/18 12:42 PM
This WAS my favorite podcast app. Now, unfortunately, I am going back to Overcast. Removed features like: Sorting by unplayed episodes, keeping screen awake, and...I have no idea what archiving actually does anymore. I do like the aesthetics, but without functionality...it’s just a pretty app with no substance. What a shame...this was the best app out there.
Killermonkeys's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/3/18 1:02 PM
A lot of folks are complaining that the update “ruined” pocket casts. I have listened to 115 days of podcasts on pocket casts. I am a power user. Some things are in different places and some things take an extra tap or two. But overall this is a really great update that incorporates the most recent Apple Human Interface Guidelines as well as restructuring the app to make it a lot clearer. If you are new to pocketcasts, I’d strongly advise ignoring the negative comments as the app is easier to use and the hidden power user features are now easier to find. If you are a power user I suggest you just try to adapt and give feedback. I requested a feature a week ago and it is already there (not saying I was responsible but it shows they are responding to customers!).
enemyjeff's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/3/18 1:02 PM
I have tried to get used to the new interface but I’m afraid they have broken more than they have improved. I would like to have the old version back. Looks like the acquisition was fatal for pocket casts, this app stinks.

Shame on you! The latest update is awful; clunky and bloated. Completely dumbed down, which was their goal. It seems too many people were confused by Auto Clean-up so they removed it. Style over substance. No thanks. Developer is snarky when they do reply. I've moved on from what was once my most used app. Joe might be a nerd but his podcatcher (icatcher!) app is first rate.

Many of the problems have been covered by others. I have several topical filtered lists and I was used to playing from s list. No longer possible... I now have to select each episode and add them to play back to back. Also, the filter can no longer auto cleanup so that only the 1 most recent episode is available to play. Time to find a new app (after years of using this one).
Kiwilinda's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/3/18 1:02 PM

cruleworld's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/3/18 1:02 PM
Latest update has forced me to switch, the interface no longer makes sense. Before you could make items as played easily. Now it’s archive or something else. A good interface just makes sense and gets out of the way. This interface is hard to use and clunky while being beautiful.
Droidattack's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/3/18 1:02 PM
Great app. There are two annoying bugs: 1. Audio stops on a video podcast once you switch out of the application to the home screen. I think it’s still playing in the background but the audio stops. If you stop and start the podcast the audio restarts. 2. The video controls on a video podcast in landscape mode are too close together and sometimes register the wrong action when you click them (especially when you try to fast forward.)

I switched over to this app from the default Apple Podcasts app and it’s been a much better experience, especially since I listen to a mix of time-sensitive daily news podcasts as well as long-form podcasts. I love all of the customizations including organizing the library podcasts you listen to, easily modifying the play queue, automatically adding episodes to your queue when they become available, etc. Definitely get this app if you listen to podcasts regularly!

Darmok N. Jalad's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/29/18 1:00 PM
I don’t mind the update, and this app has still been my go-to for podcasts for years. However, I do wish there was more information density in list mode. Most podcasts have a long title that starts with the author, then the title of the episode. Prior to the update, I could see what the title was from the list to make curating easier. Now I have to open each episode to get the details. It sounds minor, but it’s a usability issue that compounds itself over multiple podcasts and episodes. Otherwise I have no complaints, but I hope they can bring that density back in a future update.

This was my favorite app ever. I’ve been using it on Android and iOS for a long time now. However, this recent update made some incredibly unnecessary changes which made the UI more convoluted, the settings more confusing, and the overall experience less satisfying. The bugs are to be expected and can be ironed out but the major gaffs with the UI and UX can’t be redone overnight. I’ll keep the app but am considering exploring alternatives in the meantime.

I have used this service for years, because my job often causes me to switch between Android and iOS devices. I took a month off of iOS and came back to find this new clunky UI that breaks years of muscle memory and expectations. Every service evolves, and big updates are inevitable, I only wish some sort of tutorial or comparison with the previous version was included. That way, I could learn how to manage the new UI and achieve the things I used to do with the old. Also, I wish I could choose what my swipe actions do. For instance, I don’t ever want to use Archive, so let me swap it with Mark Played.

The UI gets worse every time I open the app. It takes 2-3 times as many steps do do anything compared to the same app for Android. Half the time it doesn't sync the played/unplayed podcasts in my feed and I have to do it manually.
GratefulJed's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/29/18 1:00 PM
I'm not a podcast "power user" by any means but this app gets the job done exceedingly well. I've tried a handful of others and imo most of them lack the clean and intuitive UI that Pocket Casts provides. My biggest complaint in the past was that you had to subscribe to a podcast just to stream it's episodes. That's no longer the case with recent updates. Sooo I'm happy to pay once and bask in the simplicity than pay monthly for other apps with features I'll never use.
TheMighyLeprachaun691's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/29/17 8:35 PM
Massive mistake buying this app. Yes, the UI is much better than that of the podcasts app at the time of my writing this. However, there is no search feature available for episodes which is a huge inconvenience. Any time you’re searching for an older episode of a certain podcast, you have to scroll through pages upon pages to find it (I’m now stuck using two podcast apps which is quite annoying). I contacted the company and they said they hope to have this feature in the future. In all honestly that’s one that should without question have been incorporated by now.
Poliscimonster's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/27/17 1:41 PM
Love the overall look and feel of the app. Have been looking for a snappier alternative to Downcast. Unfortunately, this is missing a number of more detailed sorting options for podcast episodes (like sorting by time, sorting by file size, etc.) and the ability to edit select items on a list (rather than do a “mark all as...” function). Additionally, would love the ability to select specific episodes from a list to delete (rather than mark as listened, and then have to “delete all” from a separate menu). In short, I want to love this, but I just don’t have enough additional functionality to make the switch worth it.

Vineetk32's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/25/18 1:03 PM
Great app before the new redesign. After 3 weeks, I’m still not sure what “archived” means, and why it is any different from played. The now playing bar at the bottom is also strange and inconsistent. I much preferred the earlier main page for each podcast - not sure why half the screen is dedicated to just the logo of the podcast. Still the #2 podcast app for me though (1 being the old app - any way to get it back?)
John B from Brooklyn's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/25/18 1:03 PM
Pocket casts should just fire their designers or they will spend the next few years coming up with an even worse redesign. It feels like some actions now take more clicks to get to, and I have to go through different screens. The app was really great before- what did this add? It’s unclear. The app still does what I want, and unsubscribing is a little easier, but aside from that it isn’t any better to use. I’d pay another $5 just to get the old design back.
unarmed apple's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/25/18 1:03 PM

Why do developers make major changes when an app is working well and doing it’s job? This is still a serviceable app but the latest update has made it harder to use and created some glitches. One is downloaded podcasts ending abruptly before the actual end of the podcast. The other changes have sent me looking for another podcasting app.

They had the Mona Lisa of podcast apps. Then they got the bright idea to have somebody who has no concept of art do a hand sketch of the Mona Lisa to try to make it better. The nose is in the wrong place and the eyes are closed. Then when people complain, their reply is, “ don’t just say it’s horrible, tell me what you don’t like so we can make it better”. Why did you even want to torch a masterpiece in the first place? Arrogance...we know better than you... Shifty Jelly used to be the the most caring, responsive developers ever. These can’t possibly be the same people steering the ship today.

The newer updates has demoted the video player function and the video screen is a lot smaller and difficult to view. Used the player to watch video podcasts as I did not like the Apple podcast but now will have to find another podcast player that will play video properly.
Most Giant Vanilla Bear's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/25/17 12:14 AM
This app is everything you want in a podcast app except one thing: playback. It’s playback is still superb, and better than almost every app but overcast. I like the ability to adjust speed by 0.1 and the trim silences feature. Organizing by release date and creating playlists is superb. The only thing is, overcast is just so perfect in its playback ability, and seamless trim silences feature that nothing can rival it. If you’re like me and use two podcast apps (one for Subscriptions and another for binging) then this one is great for the daily Subscriptions, but I wouldn’t recommend it for binging. Overcast is probably best for that.

EmmaraldApple's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/23/18 1:05 PM
New version looks better but that's about it. The archiving system is far too complicated and needs to be removed. You can finally play podcasts you're not subscribed to but it's still frustrating to use. For example, I can't add a podcast episode to my favorites if I'm not subscribed to it. Why?? Going to look for a new simpler app.
Iamhisstigness's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/23/18 1:05 PM
I switched to Pocket Casts because the Apple Podcasts app added too many steps to play episodes and create a playlist. Pocket Casts solved that. Now, they have updated the app and added the same extra steps to build a playlist. I don’t want to have to go to each episode to add it to a playlist. I want to build a playlist from a list of episodes. Put that functionality back and Pocket Casts goes back to being a perfect replacement to Apple Podcasts.
Sonnyrsg's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/23/18 1:05 PM
Not happy with the newest update. It seems there are more steps involved to do the same things that took less in the old version. I find it confusing and disjointed. I will give it another week. If it still frustrates me I will give up and go to another podcast app. It was excellent in the prior versions.
jdawgnoonan's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/23/18 1:05 PM
Hello, I am a long time Pocketcast user (on windows, android, the web, and iOS) and I am not at all impressed with the new update. Core functionality such as the ability to control how my advice downloads and cleans up podcasts is gone, the application is unstable, and it is even more unstable with Apple CarPlay than it is when in normal use. I am actively looking at other Podcast apps now. I am that dissatisfied.
Mattimclellan11's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/23/18 1:05 PM
Skips many episodes in my up next queue. Sometimes marks them as played and deletes them. Sometimes just takes them off the queue. Please fix that.
David58117's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/23/18 1:05 PM
Thanks for bringing archive settings per podcast with the recent update!! The functionality of this app completely changed with the 7.0 update, but once you learn to use it (think Castro but with filters), data management is better (since you can essentially have your queue as the only thing downloaded, and decide which podcasts get sent to it. The rest being added to playlists you manually go through, which is what I tend to do). I switched to Castro a few months back, but am actually back with Pocketcasts now. Great update, now that archive per podcast is available.
Gimli's Beard's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/23/18 1:05 PM
Pocket Casts was my favorite and most used app for over 6 years, until v7 came along. The UI has been completely overhauled resulting in a confusing mess that is less intuitive and requires more effort to complete simple tasks. It didn’t take long to learn the new interface but the end result is a significant downgrade in usability compared to the previous version which was brilliant. If you are migrating to Pocket Casts from Apple’s podcast app you’ll feel right at home in v7. That is not a compliment to the developers of Pocket Casts... The most egregious usability change is the complete abandonment of the logical paradigm of played/unplayed for the new method of archiving. I don’t mind them implementing a new method but I can’t for the life of me understand why they made it the default process AND completely removed the ability to bulk mark as played/unplayed. If you like controlling the played status of your episodes/feeds and curating custom filters (such as starred episodes) you are out of luck. Arching is now everywhere and it completely removes episodes from all filters and deletes the downloaded files while leaving the podcast feed a mess of played, unplayed, and archived episodes. A great deal of user frustration on Twitter and in these reviews relates to this change but so far the developers have shown an arrogant and condescending dismissal of users concerns which does not paint them in a good light. Furthermore, they have stated that they no intention of returning this basic functionality that existed for years in previous versions. I jumped on the v7 upgrade the day it arrived as I normally love the improvements that enhancements that are delivered but this has been a complete disappointment and severely limits the usefulness of this app. I really loved Pocket Casts v6 and it truly deserved the stellar rating that it enjoyed. I have tried for over 4 weeks to get used to v7 but I really don’t like it and unfortunately, it has earned the abysmal rating that it has. I’m sure it was not the plan, but v7 has significantly lowered the overall App Store rating of Pocket Casts so that it is more in line with the other NPR apps. I purchased Pocket Casts more than 6 years ago and certainly got my money’s worth but I really miss the great app that Pocket Casts used to be. I haven’t seen a self-inflicted debacle like this since “New” Coke or the Star Wars prequels. Change doesn’t have to be bad but this version really is a clunker.
Zalincognito's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/22/18 1:12 PM
I dislike the redesign in general but they removed features in the update including the ability to only keep a certain number of episodes of a podcast downloaded at a time (eg. 3 latest episodes). Would like a way to toggle between new archive behavior and old system.
tascma's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/22/18 1:12 PM
Love the new look and feel but some of the basics need to be easier - getting to show notes, which I use a lot to move around longer items, needs to be easier - it currently takes about 3 clicks. The ability to swipe left to clear a podcast from the list now takes 2 clicks, before it was just a swipe.

Please don’t forget how much you hate V7. Don’t just get used to it because it’s the new normal. Nearly everything got worse with this update from V6. Entirely backwards and bad. They’re hoping you give up and like it for what it is. DON’T! Use Overcast or Downcast.
Lionheart777's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/22/18 1:12 PM
I’m slowly getting used to the app after a lot of messing around with it. All I want is it to say download and then hit play. Not the play stream icon that always shows. Plus the playlist scroll on bottom is still god awful. It was better when it showed whole list on right tab previously on original app.
JRF_USA's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/22/18 1:12 PM
I wrote to the developers and they confirmed that Auto Clean-Up was removed. No reason given. Now the app is a memory hog. Absolutely absurd! Check your storage. In previous versions I had Auto Clean-Up set to keep only the most recent episode which was crucial for storage management. Archive is NOT a replacement for the previous Auto Clean-Up. UPDATE: They keep tweaking it but simply refuse to bring back Auto Clean-Up. Are they stubborn or just don’t care about users? Good-bye Pocket Casts.
Cthulhu Ftahgn's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/22/18 1:12 PM
Really don’t understand why you spent any money on the latest update! You really destroyed it! Seriously, I started to think that you are destroying it intentionally for some unknown reasons! For me, this is the only logical reason for taking a perfect app and make it unusable. I already gave it the time to be familiar with the new design. Told myself to be patient and maybe I will get it, but really my frustration and confusion are getting worse! Hope to hear from you soon if you still care about your customers (which I doubt).
cmpb's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/22/18 1:12 PM
I want to love this app, and there’s so much that’s wonderful, but there are a few design choices that I find perplexing. First is the lack of a podcast-level archive. The option to show/hide archive appears at the podcast level, but affects all podcasts. This is frustrating. Next is the fact that - when archived episodes are displayed - archived episodes will still appear as “new” when they are unplayed or partially played. This is confusing. Finally, and this is a preference, but I hate the amount of scrolling needed to seek episodes when archived are shown. I’d like if there were an option to display downloaded episodes on top of the list.

BadKitty's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/22/18 1:12 PM
Update Dec 2018: Very happy to see a change to the app fixed my issue below, but why can’t I pull up a podcast by episode title or subject? For example, if I want to search for eps re mitochondria like I did today, I still need to use a *different* app to find podcasts with an episode on mitochondria. A search in THIS app yields no results. Aside from this it’s my favorite podcast app and it is used daily. Why this a four-star app: I do not like that I have to subscribe to a podcast to see the episode list. For this reason, I keep another app on my phone for browsing shows - and I am considering going back to premium with that app and abandoning Pocket Casts for now.
alyberninger's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/22/18 1:12 PM
Update to add: I’ve switched to iCatcher, and that works much better than this updated version. I would recommend going to that podcast app. Warning to people who have not updated to the latter version: Don’t do it. Changes everything, made it clunky, no longer user friendly. Put it back to how it was!
ecko_strong's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/22/18 1:12 PM
I’ve been using pocket casts for more than a year and with the new update, it’s telling me that I have more than 6k new releases. Also, on the old version I had it set to download the newest version of NPR Now’s hourly update and delete any old episodes from the previous hours but now I have 73 pending downloads from NPR alone. I want to limit how many episodes to download for each podcast again (e.g. The Moth: 2 most recent; Criminal: 5 most recent; NPR Now: 1 most recent)
CyberData4's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/22/18 1:12 PM
Cause man, we got menus in menus in menus... I want to keep the two most recent episodes of every podcast I'm subscribed to downloaded. The new changes don't seem to make that possible. And if it is it's too confusing to figure out. These changes are still trash.

Neutroh's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/22/18 1:12 PM
I converted from Android Pocket Casts and some features I used religiously are all but absent. 1) I only like to keep the latest episode of each podcast, so when a new one comes, I want the previous ones deleted/marked as played/dequeued, even if I didn’t listen to it. This is CRITICAL for frequent news/daily podcasts which will clutter your feed with outdated information. 2) Mark as played. Why has this been replaced with “archive?” I don’t want to archive, I want to mark as played. I had to manually mark 300 podcasts as played since the batch feature was removed. That’s an awful user experience. 3) Auto download... doesn’t automatically download. When I open the Pocket Casts app in my car, none of my podcasts ever download while at home and connected to WiFi.
Yevgene's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/22/18 1:12 PM
Unintuitive, remembered none of my preferences, gave me no introduction to the new version, DELETES MY PLAYED EPISODES WITHOUT ASKING. Dislike. I thought I had somehow run the wrong app and had to triple-check. Update 12/2018: Deleted. No longer the application I bought.

I’d been looking for a better way to play my podcasts on my Sonos system. Casts exceeded my expectations. The automatic creation of a In Progress folder is what allows this app to fully integrate with Sonos.
Rad Herring's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/2/18 12:54 PM
I have used this app and loved for years. The developers are great, and have no doubt they’ll have this app back to tip-top shape soon. But, a few fixes in order: I used to be able to select how many episodes I wanted to keep, e.g. how many to retain downloaded. How do I do that now? My 128gb iPhone is filled to the brim, and I now see that 20gb is in Pocket Casts. So, I attempt to clean up and it is not simple. What does “Archive” do? Does it delete the episode from my phone? Apparently. But the episode still remains bolded, so I guess that means it’s unplayed? How do I mark it as played without listening to it? Is there no way to set number of episodes to keep? So, if I mark it as “Auto-Download” it will just download everything going forward and keep them all until I manually “archive”? Any way to archive all at once for a podcast? I hate that when I click on an episode to play it, it pops up a card, and as soon as I hit play it hides the card. So, if I want to see anything else on the card, I have to click on the episode again to open it. Also, it shows the episode notes in the card if it isn’t playing. If it is playing, you can no longer swipe the card to right to see notes. I guess I see a button at bottom now, but loved the swipe gesture a lot more than finding a little button in bottom nav.
Jon E5's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/2/18 12:54 PM
I have used this app for years on both iOS and android with zero problems. I used to swipe left on a podcast to mark it as played. Now I have to tap/click through each episode then back out for anything else I want to mark. Effectively making the feature 3x more tedious than it was before. Now the swipe left is used for a convoluted filter system that really should be deeper into the interface for the power users who like to dig into that stuff. Which brings me to a feature that has been removed: The ability to limit the number of podcast episodes that automatically download per subscription. I don’t have 2TB of storage on a phone, nor do I have unlimited time to listen to all the podcasts that pop up in some of my subs (daily shows) so those GB of data start adding up. Since everything is now behind convoluted filters and the ability to “mark as played” is too tedious, it compounds the issue!
tom5304's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/2/18 12:54 PM
Pocket Casts’ version 7 update has been so poorly implemented. Pocket Casts is a completely different app now. It appears they tried to copy some of the workflow of the Castro podcast app, but Pocket Casts failed miserably. If you’re looking for a podcast app that has that dead simple workflow we used to have with Pocket Casts, give Castro a shot. Now that I’ve spent a whole lot of spare time in the past few days figuring out how to use Pocket Casts v7, I can see that Pocket Casts has jumped the shark. And judging by the condescending responses by the Pocket Casts team, the old Pocket Casts is never coming back. The big question now is how the Pocket Casts team could have been so ham-handed, so oblivious, as to think they could drop this new app on their customers without the community rising up in anger. For many people, this is their most-used app. To drastically change the app without warning was a boneheaded move. And the developers’ response to the Pocket Casts community’s dismay and disappointment? They double down on their cluelessness by blaming the problem on their customers. Pocket Casts is basically saying we’re holding it wrong. No, Pocket Casts developers. We’re not the problem, you are. Maybe spend less time writing snarky update notes, and focus more on not ruining a once-great app.
Andrew218371263512's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/2/18 12:54 PM
Used this app every day for a few years now. The recent update completely overhauled in and was clearly a design team having too much fun and not actually caring about anyone using the app seriously. Settings are now confusing and less powerful. Interface includes a lot more swiping to find hidden functions. There's a new state "archived" which doesn't necessarily mean played, hidden, or ignored. It's a weird combination of all those and I'm not sure what it's purpose is.
Yvvvvvvfsgh's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/2/18 12:54 PM
I’m glad they brought back badge numbers for unfinished episodes but still not swipe to mark as played, only to archive. I don’t want to archive episodes, I want to swipe to mark as played. At least give us the option to not use the archive feature. Or make the title of an episode not in bold when archived! This would fix the problem. Now, even if I do archive an episode, it looks like it’s unplayed because it’s in bold. I don’t want to have to hide it. Thank you for listening to us and getting updates out.
HawkeyeCoffee's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/2/18 12:54 PM
I loved this app before version 7. I hate, hate, hate the new UI. Not to mention some episodes missing that I had to unsubscribe and resubscribe. I tried to move away a couple times only to be forced back. I finally deleted it and went with Overcast. So disappointed. Don't know why the developers wanted to fix something that wasn't broken.

Chimy28's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/2/18 12:54 PM
They took one of the best apps ever and totally ruined it. If it took one tap, now it takes two or three taps...that’s if you can figure out how to do it at all. I still can’t figure out how to make each podcast play at a custom speed unique to each podcast, and it was working perfectly prior to the update. They said NPR purchasing Pocket Casts wouldn’t change anything....this can’t be a coincidence. I’ve never been a fan of griping on the App Store. Just tell the developer. But they don’t answer any more. Before NPR owned them, I never waited more than 2-3 days for a reply, and often within hours. Oh well...moving on to Overcast.

When I switched to iOS, I was relieved to find out that Pocket Casts is just as good on the iPhone. The swiping interface is intuitive and fits in well with the rest of the iPhone X UI. Everything is easy to use and it looks great. I’ve paid for it twice now and would gladly pay for it again. The stock podcast app is crippling and I even tried Overcast for a few days but I just don’t like it as much. I highly recommend PocketCasts if you’re an avid podcast listener. *One complaint: Increasing the playback speed seems to cause distortion. It’s not my speaker or headphones and only happens on iOS. This is the only major problem I have & I hope they address this soon.
joeheavyflow's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/19/18 1:22 PM
This app was perfect until the latest update. The UI is terrible and I have no idea why they’re so obsessed with “Archive.” Plates or Not Played. That’s it. Also, there’s no option to keep unplayed... or, I’m sorry, “Unarchived” podcast episodes at the top. You have to scroll through all of them to find your episodes. Initially I was told this could be fixed by changing a setting that would hide archived episodes, but guess what? All of the podcasts I’ve already listened to show up as Unarchived in the new system. I lost all that info. Very frustrating.

I never write reviews, but this last update managed to upset me enough that I had to. What happened to the app I loved for years? Not only less intuitive, but it now requires more motions. What you could once accomplish in a single swipe or a click or two now takes way more and is hidden. The interface does not scale well on the iPad. Everything is cluttered and difficult to read. Support has also become less responsive than before. Is there a way for me to downgrade? I am going to starting to look for an alternative.
dirtyepic101's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/19/18 1:22 PM

I used this app for several years across multiple platforms and devices. After the recent update I had to delete it. It's impossible to navigate, no more "download all", and there's a new archive feature that no one seems to know what it does. They butchered it.
tom5304's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/18/18 12:50 PM
For those searching for a podcast app that is as good as Pocket Casts used to be, try the Castro podcast app. It’s the closest thing I’ve found to the pre-update Pocket Casts. I remember when the NPR crew bought Pocket Casts, they said nothing would change. Then, everything changed. Pocket Casts went from great to ridiculous overnight with version 7. Unfortunately, the Pocket Casts developers have gone all-in on this broken “archive” model. The developers made their mistakes, they won’t admit they screwed up, and they’re going down with the ship, waving their failure flag high. Maybe they should spend less time writing snarky update notes, and focus more on not ruining a once-great app. Too late for many of us, though.
CtoK's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/18/18 12:50 PM
Bring back auto cleanup. Why auto archive by days/weeks not by episodes? Some pods post 2, some post 15 in a week. Update nuked my auto cleanups on all of my podcasts. Used to keep most recent 2, now I have a million “new” badges to deal with. No I don’t want to turn badges completely off. Shade out the “archived” podcasts like they used to. Plus others frustrations. I don’t get reinventing an app that -was- the best podcast app in the App Store. But you succeeded!

I am not sure why I’m still using this pile of garbage app after the atrocious update. I guess I’m hoping they will be smart enough to listen to their ever-shrinking userbase instead of being too stubborn and arrogant to admit they wasted their time and money on an update that nobody wanted. Certainly, at 3.3/5, they must be hemmorhaging money with the drop in new users. Just. Revert. Back. To. Version. 6. I hate the new design, I hate how many clicks it takes to do everything, I hate how complicated it is to do something simple like mark an episode played, I hate the glitches. I’ll give it another week, then download a better app as a Christmas gift to myself.

Trying to get used to the new update. If it is not broken, don’t fix it. Not sure why this app needed an overhaul. It was a great app before this new update. The starred functionality is very instable and unresponsive. Please fix it.
Media001's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/17/18 1:20 PM
You removed so much of the core functionality that made this the best podcast player. No longer able to sort by unplayed episodes. Archiving is more confusing than ever. Aesthetics look “pretty” but the layouts and buttons are impractical and in many cases you made previous tasks more complicated. If you subscribe to more than 15-20 podcasts, this is no longer the app to choose. You will be frustrated. Used to have. 4.8 app rating...now down to 3.3 and dropping. The new owners / developers don’t seem to care.
Manic020's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/17/18 1:20 PM
Keep the new design, but bring back the old way of organizing episodes (played/unplayed, no archiving), or at least make it an option, and this will be the #1 podcasting app again. There was nothing wrong with the old way of just hiding old episodes automatically until you hit the “Load More” button. It was zero maintenance. No one who was using the app before 7.0 wants to have to babysit their podcast feeds like this.
James Sauce's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/17/18 1:20 PM
Update, 12/16/18: the slight tweaks to version 7.0 just aren’t cutting it for me. The totally unnecessary anti-union jokes written in the 7.4 description have pushed me over the edge. I migrated to Overcast this morning, and I’m very happy with the move. Later, friends. ✌️ ***** Original, 11/18: I’ve been happily using this app every single day for several years, but now I’m so frustrated by the latest update and unexpected (read: unwelcome) interface changes that I felt compelled to write my very first AppStore review. There is no longer a badge count option that includes episodes that are unfinished, only for those that are completely unplayed. The second you begin to listen to an episode, the badge count goes away. There is no longer a visual separation between played and unplayed episodes, now just an endless stream of every episode ever produced by a given show. The “up next” queue no longer includes a count of the number of episodes in the queue. The amount of time remaining to listen to the “up next” queue no longer updates as you listen to episodes in the queue. There is no longer a way to “pull down” to refresh podcast subscriptions and load new episodes. The options for creating filtered searches no longer include an option to include unfinished episodes, yet it appears that filters created before this new update were weirdly “grandfathered” in, and still can include unfinished episodes. All around, these changes lead me to want to ditch this app in favor of a competitor. It seems the dev team put more thought into trying to write a cute update description than they put into the potential UX for existing users.

I'm writing this in hopes that the developers see this negate I've been a user since almost the beginning on both Android and iOS. This app no longer fits what I expect out of a podcast app. The good: Visual design, layout, playback effects The bad: Episodes consistently don't stay marked as played or archived so I spend more time curating my library than I should have to. Quickly switching between playing on the app vs playing on the Sonos and synching the second time stamps doesn't work like it used to.
enguneer's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/17/18 1:20 PM
I had been a long time user of Pocket Casts. I was extremely happy with the simplicity of the app. The new update took a simple podcast player and made it more complicated with a ton of features. Some find these updates welcoming. Others don’t. If you’re looking for something similar to the old Pocket Cast, check out Castro or Overcast. I gave the app an honest chance up until a few days ago.
Htd68's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/17/18 1:20 PM
The most recent update seems to have made Pocket Cast more complex and harder to "just work". I don't like how common controls (like "play all") now involve a long press to activate. My podcasts are sorted in "filters". I just like to hit "play" and be done with it. Also, the "Next Up" list is more obscured than ever. Keep it simple, please!
J.Sikora's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/17/18 1:20 PM
And now it’s pure junk. It’s clear most long time users are not happy with this latest overhaul of the app yet the developers keep saying how much the users wanted archiving and keep defending it. I used this app from day on on Android and iOS. No more.
Scopela26's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/17/18 1:20 PM
I used the app for 3 years but the new update has made it totally unusable. It’s way too difficult to tell if a podcast is downloaded or not, and I have no idea what the archive feature is trying to accomplish. Switching to stitcher.
TheReluctantReviewer625's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/17/18 1:20 PM
The latest update is awful; clunky and bloated. Completely dumbed down, which was their goal. It seems too many people were confused by Auto Clean-up so they removed it. Developer is snarky when they reply. I've moved on from what was once my most used app. Joe might be a nerd but his podcatcher (icatcher!) app is first rate.

This app has been around awhile. It’s been popular for awhile. Accordingly, people have built up use habits. The app has made some changes to interaction, and it’s understandably upset some people. As for myself, I actually just came BACK to this app because of the changes, and I’ve tried (and paid for) all of them. So, give it a shot and make up your mind after that. It easily imports and exports your podcasts, so you lose nothing.
Droidattack's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/17/18 1:20 PM
Great app, but still three annoying issues still with 7.1: 1. Audio stops on a video podcast once you switch out of the application to the home screen. I think it’s still playing in the background but the audio stops. If you stop and start the podcast the audio restarts. 2. The video controls on a video podcast in landscape mode are too close together and sometimes register the wrong action when you click them (especially when you try to fast forward.) 3. Time based autoarchive seems a little confusing. Why can’t I set this to the latest X episodes released? Most of podcasts do have regular times, but they also regularly break those schedules (like around holidays or personal issues.) Perhaps you should be a podcaster and avid listener and you’ll see what I mean.
Mattimclellan11's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/17/18 1:20 PM
I bought this because apple frigged up their podcast app. The old played/unplayed setup was so much easier and better organized than the new archived setup. Reordering the up next queue is getting better with bug fixes but the drag and drop is still hit or miss. The app icon badge showing unplayed episodes is off by literally thousands. I like seeing how many unplayed episodes I have but seeing a 3553 badge notification is anxiety inducing.

Recently when playing a podcast it will skip or repeat, it's not the player, it seems to be the content because you can go back to the same spots and repeat the issue.
space-night's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/17/17 3:06 AM
is a little strange. If I want to do over new podcasts I always have to first subscribe to the podcast before I can listen to it. Makes no sense to me since I don’t know if I really want to subscribe to a specific podcast before I don’t know it’s content. If this is fixed I would be happy all around and give 5 stars!

There are no great podcast apps on iOS (see Podcast Addict for Android) but this seems to be the best if you’re a power listener. But there was already a weird change to this app recently and since NPR now owns this app you can expect more spying due to their obsession with podcast analytics. Still using this right now but am looking for an alternative, which is why this gets only two stars.

I am not sure what the strategy was on this last update, but you took a great podcast app and ruined it. The keep n recent episodes was a simple concept but you took that feature away. Now I have episodes piling up and it’s eating up storage on my phone. I am not even sure what the auto archive is doing, I still see podcasts episodes in bold under each show I subscribe too. This is a simple concept that somehow was butchered with this last update. I can’t even unsubscribe to podcasts without the app crashing. I will be going back to the Apple podcast player
hhouston's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/16/18 1:21 PM
UPDATE: Sat, December 15, 2018 Omg just please bring back ‘Latest Episode Only.” You came close with the latest upset, but the 24 hour archive isn’t cutting it. Podcasts rarely have set schedules — especially in the era of Trump — and so I often have old episodes that are no longer relevant just chilling in my feed. Like: why again did you remove ‘Latest Episode Only’? You claimed it was because of user complaints — but they can’t be comparable to the flood of complaints you got from removing it. Right? *** UPDATE: Wednesday, November 21, 2018 Overcast and Castro offer the ability to keep the latest episodes only. I’m currently using the former, which is really good and comparable to Pocket Cast. *** ‘Latest Episode Only’ was what distinguished this player from the rest — and was the primary reason I use(d) Pocket Cast as my primary podcast player. That feature was vital to controlling my episode feed — in particular the hourly NPR News Now podcast. I adjusted the podcast settings to have new episodes automatically queue to my top of my feed, so that I would get a quick, five-minute news updates following every podcast episode. And the best part: because the newest episode always replaced the previous, my feed was never overrun with all of the unlistened episodes. It was brilliant! But now no more :(
Eric W. Stone's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/16/18 1:21 PM
I listen to a lot of daily podcasts. I have Pocket Casts set up to be my own personal NPR One: I get the NPR news every hour, so if I leave it playing after listening to a show, I get the news. Then I get a couple other daily shows. But I don’t need to listen to every episode of these daily shows, never mind the hourly newscast. I want to keep the last 1 or 2 episodes and archive the rest of them. That feature is critical.
nickrp's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/16/18 12:22 PM

UPDATE: had to remove the app - it FILLED my phone with 62 GB of podcasts (auto-cleanup feature did not work) and USED UP ALL MY MOBILE DATA (despite the app being set to use cellular data only with permission). What a piece of garbage!!!! They seem to have removed everything that made PocketCasts my favorite podcast app, and instead created an app that is harder to use, more cumbersome and FRUSTRATING!! The new controls are so small that it’s nearly impossible to use while driving, walking, etc. Too many touches are required to do things that in the last version involved swipes, and now require precise touch. The “add to up next” feature from the “new episodes” menu is GONE from the app altogether. It was previously accessed with a swipe and tap from the menu; now it requires that you open each episode to add to up next. Again, more hazardous to use when visual attention should be focused elsewhere. Variable speed settings are no longer saved for each podcast, and instead requires speed to be adjusted for each episode that plays. What’s the use of an auto-playing up-next list when it doesn’t play how I want it to? I have now sent two emails to support for these issues, but haven’t received a response.

I’ve been using Pocket Casts for many years and have always enjoyed it. For the most part, I like the new app, but the auto archiving feature they added has got to go. It doesn’t work very well. It leaves too much on the device. The old way worked fine and I don’t know why they changed it. I’m on the verge of leaving and once I leave and find something else, I doubt I come back. I don’t think I’m the only one. Hope this changes very very soon.

This used to be the best podcast app out there. The new version is terrible. Someone in this company really married them self to the concept of archiving and it’s just everywhere and the most unintuitive mess ever. I’m actually going to delete this app I paid for and just going to use the free one that comes with the phone. Thanks for the update no one asked for.

This used to be my favorite podcast app. But since 7.0, it’s practically unusable. I can’t figure out how to download podcasts for later. I can’t figure out how to queue things up. I clicked on an icon that looked like a mushroom — I guess it was a trash can — and an episode disappeared. I don’t know where it went. Ugh. Back to using Overcast for me, I guess.
Ballistic Bacon's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/15/18 1:03 PM

The new update changed many default behaviors. Some of them we tucked into properties (setting default behavior to download is somewhere, I've set it now). Changing it so default is for playback settings to effect all podcasts is really annoying. I now have to go into all my existing podcasts and set them to individual so i don't accidentally mess up their settings. It's still an OK app. Probably better as using the app as a fresh new experience than as the "upgrade" experience has been.

UPDATE Version 7.1: They keep tweaking it but simply refuse to bring back Auto Clean-Up. Stubborn or just don’t care about users? Good-bye Pocket Casts.

This used to be a 5 star app for me (version 6 and earlier). I’ve given it some time to get used to the new interface and there are some nice improvements (the queue of episodes is good), but there are some major regressions. Primarily for me is the archive feature. It used to be episodes were played or unplayed, and unplayed episodes were grouped together at the top of the list for a particular podcast. This made it easy to get rid of an episode you don’t want with a swipe to mark it as played. It also let you subscribe to a podcast and mark just the episodes you were interested in as unplayed and they would be sorted to the top. Now episodes have archived and played status which is overly complicated. Unplayed episodes are not grouped at the top so you have to scroll down to find them scattered about. It is complicated to replay an episode as archived episodes are hidden. It is possible to keep archived episodes visible, but getting rid of episodes you don’t want is a multi step process to mark as played (a button in the episode details) and archive it (a swipe).
captobie's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/15/17 2:16 PM
Pocket Casts is the most used app on my phone. I listen to far too many podcasts and a good podcast app is essential to me. I've tried them all, and try all newcomers as they are released, but this is the one I always come back to. You won't be disappointed.

I downloaded this app because it supported the cast feature for google home speakers. Since then the app has constantly lost progress on podcasts, is unable to download them, does not resume play after a Siri or notification interruption, requires multiple force quits to even get an episode playing and other issues that have made using this application nothing but a nightmare. I reached out to support for these issues, but never received anything in return. I am actively searching for something to replace this application as this is the worst application I have ever spent money on from the App Store.
LuckysClub's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/14/18 1:08 PM
I had settled on Pocket Casts as the best podcatcher for me after trying all the others. Now so much that made it good has been removed. Worst of all is that it became a total memory hog as you can no longer control how podcasts are kept. There’s no way to specify keeping 1 episode of a podcast or many, so now my up now list, filters, and device memory are all cluttered with useless podcast episodes that I just want gone. They used to be auto-cleaned up by settings. In Version 7.1, the developers tried to rectify this change by bringing back a per podcast setting, but it’s not for removing downloads. Instead it Auto Archives episodes so you don’t see them at all. That’s not helpful. I just need the download to stop taking space, but I still need to know the episode exists and I didn’t listen. What they need to bring back is the previous Auto Clean-Up feature that deleted the download. I don’t want deleting a download to archive an episode! Previously I kept exactly all the podcasts I wanted on my device at all times so they were there, even if I had no network on a plane or in the subway. Storage hovered around 12-16GB used. With the new system, downloaded podcasts keep ballooning to 128GB+ and causing my 256GB iPhone to run out of memory. There is now no way to adjust setting to get the right balance of the right podcasts always available. Archive is the most inane, unneeded, unasked-for feature. Apparently the developers thought is solved some need that I never had. The new per podcast Archive settings don’t even solve one of the big complaints many people had. I subscribe to several news bulletin podcasts with a new “episode” every hour. All I want on my device and in lists is the most recent one. Previously I could set it to just “Keep 1 Episode”. Now you can only archive “inactive” episodes after the first 24 hours, meaning I still have 23 unwanted episodes cluttering everything up. You’d think Pocket Casts would understand this after being bought by NPR, one of the producers of hourly news podcasts. I had switched to Overcast after version 7 and hoped I could switch back to Pocket Casts with Version 7.1, but apparently not. It’s still awful. It’s a real shame, because I don’t really like Overcast and came to Pocket Cast because it offered all sorts of things Overcast doesn’t. It’s a shame the developers have chosen to mess up their app so horribly. I guess I have to start sampling all the other podcatchers again.

Long time user of Overcast... So happy I decided to give this podcast app a try. I have a podcast that I listen to that only makes episodes available for 24 hours before they get deleted. Overcast would auto delete once that episode was gone. So I would constantly miss episodes. This app lets you keep that episode as long as you have it downloaded. For me that alone was worth paying for this app. Couple reasons why I took off a star... One, when you make a custom filter I wish it would automatically play episodes in that filter without having to manually queue up each episode. Having a option to play oldest to newest, or newest to oldest would be great. Second, the volume boost constantly makes the voices sound like robots, it’s pretty annoying. Aside from that, I love the layout of all the podcasts I’m subscribed to. Plenty of playback options to get through those long podcasts faster. All around a great podcast app. Highly recommend!!

The recent, major UI overhaul had me fuming. This is, for me, one of the most important apps I have installed. And I’ve become a bit of a Luddite, never mind my considerable IT work dating back a quarter of a century. I quickly went searching for alternatives, spending considerable time with three or four apps. The typical subscription models offered by many competitors turned me off just enough to revisit Pocket Cast one final time. It was an infuriating challenge. Why couldn’t I find a way to remove a subscription any more? Where did that one thing go? Why did they move that? What’s this crap I see when I scroll down? How can I live with this nonsense? Why is this so hard?! And then...I “got it.” I found the settings I thought were removed. I discovered the beauty of the new interface because it allowed me to queue (after lots of fiddling) podcasts in an order that sensibly aligned with my wishes. It started to feel intuitive after a day or two. I continued to fiddle. I found the option to automatically download podcasts that I’d added to my queue. And it’ll only do so over WiFi as I ask, just the way I want it. I got used to scrolling vertically as well as horizontally. I figured out what I’m guessing the devs hoped I’d figure out, LOL. This is GREAT! The poor developers must have been worried sick about this big UI revision. They had to know this would be a jarring change for their users and that it would likely turn many loyal fans away. But I think they’ve done a terrific job. I’ve more than warmed up to the new look and feel. I much prefer it now. Period. I encourage you to spend time playing around with the new Pocket Casts app, if you’re a long-time user finding yourself frustrated. They’ve done some fine work here.

The update to version 7.0 was a major UI change for what I consider to be the best podcast player in the App Store. Unfortunately there were also some bugs with the app and even some features that were removed as part of the new version. The update to 7.1 fixes the issues that I was experiencing and restores some of the features that went missing. (Welcome back dates for podcasts in the Up Next list, how I missed you) Change is hard but after using the new version for a couple of weeks I am already used to it. I use Pocketcasts on both Android and iOS. The new update has ruined the iOS version. I have spent weeks getting familiar with the new design and controls. This response is not just a negative reaction to change in general. After putting a lot of effort into understanding the changes I have concluded that this new interface is harder to use, missing controls, less intuitive, and broken. Many video podcasts won’t play at all. The entire app runs slower and has delayed responses. My filtered lists include podcasts that are years old and I can find no way of removing them. Reordering lists is harder to use. Before making a major change to the UI please make sure all the controls and capabilities of the previous version are still present in someway. If this doesn’t get fixed soon I’ll need to find a new podcast app which makes me sad because I’ve loved this app and appreciated the quirky developers for years.

Please add archive so I can choose that only one episode is downloaded and shown in the queue at a time...like before the large update.

What happened to the auto cleanup feature?

I have been a user for a long time, and I just realize that I should give this app a good review. I am able to find all the podcasts that I love and download them to listen anytime and everywhere. One improvement that that I would like is to have a place for the user to leave review for the podcasts. But otherwise, this app exists on all of my devices, and I will continue to be a user for a long long time.

It’s by far my favorite podcast app. It is much better than the standard apple podcast app and worth the low cost. The two reasons I only gave it 4-stars: 1) on the main podcast page, like most apps it just shows a list of podcast icons, would like the ability to sort podcasts into categories or folders 2) the volume boost and trim silence features don’t work, the buttons are there but nothing happens when I touch them.

The upgrade is horrible. I too am looking for an alternate podcast app.

Streaming to google home does not sync across devices. Picks up podcast on iPhone from beginning after casting to near the end Google Home. Issue does not happen with android on Oreo. Please fix this sync issue been a longtime supporter.

I’ve used pocketcast for several years now and I’m not that happy with the latest updates. Mainly Pocketcast has a problem as it will not stop or close on my iPad. I am watching a video podcast and when I wish to stop it, I click the x on the top left corner and nothing happens. I end up having to close the app from double clicking my home button, and sliding the app off the face of my iPad. Please fix the close the video button. Otherwise I use this app a lot and have done for years.

Update made the app terrible for old time users, made options more hidden and complicated to find. Send to Apple Watch, which was a requested feature, not even close to be seen.

I’ve been using Pocket Casts for years for its very simple design and easy on the eyes interface. The new design is the antithesis of that. For example, archived episodes that aren’t complete still show with bolded titles and a play button, making it very difficult to distinguish them from episodes you have yet to play. I don’t like “hiding” archived episodes because I like to re-listen to episodes sometimes. Additionally, there are more steps to navigate the app than previously needed. Im beginning to look around for a new app, as I just can’t get used to the new design. It just wasn’t needed!

Update: This was a five star app prior to the update. Now, syncing between devices no longer works, the archive function is confusing. The general interface is confusing. Podcast management is confusing. It still looks great but it went from being a flawless and intuitive podcast manager to being a pretty mess. Best iOS podcast app. Tried all of them - Icatcher, downcast, overcast, apple, and others I can't remember. This works the best. It syncs across devices. It's customizable enough. Skips silences. Looks great.

I’ve been happy with this app until the recent update. With the new update, the downloaded episodes are no longer sorted at the top. I can’t find a feature that allows me to sort them that way. It’s harder to scroll though dozens of episodes to find the downloaded ones.

This last update feels like a step backwards. What the heck is archiving? Does this mean my episode has been saved/archived to my device? I don’t understand. Not terrible just not as intuitive an app as it used to be. Navigation could be better by unraveling some of the new “improvements”. Do starred episodes mean anything any more? So confused by all these continued improvements. Still a good app, hoping future improvements are more intuitive and bring back some of the old tools that seemed to have disappeared.

Among many problems with the oversimplified new interface, there is no longer a way to easily download podcasts for offline listening.

Unable to login to my account. From now on, I’ll be using Overcast. Such a shame as Pocket Casts was at one point the best podcasting app for iOS.

Great app before the update. Bring back auto-cleanup
Salem Mom's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/12/18 12:25 PM
I’ve been using this app for several years with only a couple wishes for features it doesn’t have (nothing major). But this latest “upgrade” takes away things I liked and used. Another reviewer described this well so I won’t repeat it here. I’m looking for another podcast app at this point.
Imagination to reality's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/12/18 12:25 PM
The latest updates reduced usability a lot. A complete change to the icons and style in the episode list makes more difficult to know which episodes have been played and which have been downloaded. Speaking of downloads all the episodes I had downloaded were wiped out by the update and my preference for auto download over WiFi had been disabled. The new default choice of having no badges made it appear as though none of the podcasts I subscribe to had unfinished episodes, which was not correct.
Skippermark's Review of Pocket CastsReviewed on 12/12/18 12:25 PM
Tried to login. It said my password was invalid so I tried to reset it with the forgot password option, but it won’t even send me an email and says the server is too busy. Used to be a good app, but it’s not when you can’t even use it.

I've been a premium user of this app for years and have recommended it to every podcast listener I know. It has never had a problem up until the latest redesign and update. I can deal with an unneeded redesign. That's fine. But you've completely broken the app. I'm being serious - this went from the most reliable app on my device to something not even worth using in one update. Fix this or you're going to lose your long-standing user base. Thank you for your time.
