Hi! I love everything about The New Yorker and I’m so glad there’s an app for it! Unfortunately, the app lacks a lot of improvement & user friendly abilities. Makes sense why the ratings aren’t so great, but it’s a huge disservice to The New Yorker to have an app that is not efficient like any and all of the other well known magazines’ apps. For one I have an IPhone X, and the app doesn’t fit to my screen properly. That’s one huge & distracting issue. We live in a technology driven time, there’s no use for an app if it is not up to par, especially for a well known magazine like this one. Hope they can improve it soon!! All the best
NightPharaoh's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 9/27/18 4:02 PM
Rather than represent a mobile experience of their website, this app is a poor digital representation of the magazine. It doesn’t support search, it doesn’t facilitate reading articles published at different times that relate to the same theme(s), and it doesn’t allow me to quickly move from one article to the next. The display ratio doesn’t support the iPhone X, and doesn’t integrate well with iOS look and feel. The caliber of this app is dramatically below the standard to which this magazine holds its writing. It does work for reading articles in the most recent print editions, but it’s time to do better.
jenndewey's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 9/26/18 1:41 AM
You’re a media company! It doesn’t work. Also- you should have a place where daily breaking stories are. Yes you have issues- but with these news cycles you’re releasing stories daily. Where can one find those? Buried inside an issue inside the app. It’s no bueno- the whole thing.

I use the New Yorker app frequently and find that it is by FAR the best designed app for magazines that I have seen. I recall that it took a little extra effort to learn It but this is well worth the effort because I use it several times per week. I am very surprised to see some negative reviews about the design and I suspect that this is because the design is innovative and does take a little getting used to. I encourage everyone to stick with it. Thanks to the New Yorker app design staff!

I’ve tried logging in from my iPhone. I’ve tried logging in from my iPad. “Authentication failed.” Ok, so maybe I forgot my password. I tried clicking “Forgot Password?,” which takes me to a screen that won’t load. Forget the app. Stick with the magazine. Very annoying experience.

Five-star content, one-star app. It too often requires deleting the app and reinstalling. Even when it’s working the interface is really awkward. The navigation buttons are not intuitive, and the options for display are very limited.

This is not a review about the quality of The New Yorker; these comments reflect the technical flaws associated with the NY App only. App consistently fails to complete linking a current subscription to the the mobile app.
Zzeme's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 8/13/18 4:32 AM
Once the issue is downloaded it is a fantastic app. It gives the same feeling (except for the touch) as reading the paper magazine. But downloading is a pain, so much so that I am considering canceling the app and going back to the paper version. You have to keep the New Yorker app open and not touch, fidget, or get curious, just wait, until download is complete. Why can’t the latest issue downloads at night, without me prompting it, and I wake up to a brand new issue to read while having my breakfast. The biggest pain is when I have a few issues to download - i can’t.

This is the only way to easily read offline the whole magazine. Great for flights etc. It no longer works at all—won’t even launch—on my iPhone running the latest version of iOS. So this review is for a poorly designed app. I like their ‘New Yorker today’ but you need good internet for that to work.
bunkincousins's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 7/12/18 2:10 AM
Many moons ago, when you reopened the NYer app after a day or so, you’d find yourself right where you left off. That’s no longer the case — when you reopen the app after a period longer than a few hours, you’re taken back to the beginning of the article or to some random place in between the start and where you left off. So annoying.

The sign in problems with New Yorker app haven't improved in years. Why a magazine that is so good and so up to date in other ways insists on punishing their subscribers by making it so difficult to read on iDevices is beyond me. am a great fan of the New Yorker and have been a subscriber to the print edition for many years. But I have not managed to sign in to read the magazine on my iPad. Every few months, I try again and I still cannot do it. Fortunately, I like the feel of paper, so I don't mind much. But the app has been out long enough that you'd think they could finally fix this problem.
trojmor's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 4/25/18 1:16 AM
If this app worked as it should, the UX would still be clumsy and poorly designed . As it is, it still suffers from significant bugginess such as unresponsive settings screens and an unreliable and baffling mishandling / obstruction of Apple digital subscribers trying to sign in

After several years of unbelievably poor performance, the TNY app is still one of the worst I have ever used. New issues don’t load, old issues disappear, the app randomly logs me out and crashes. The only disparity between the content and its method of delivery greater than this, that I can think of, is if Trump delivered MLK Jr.’s “I have a dream” speech. The New Yorker app is basically the creepy co-worker who keeps asking you out despite you A) keep saying “no.” B) have been married to him/her for 14 years. I’ve been a subscriber to the app version of the New Yorker since there was an app, but nowhere on the app does it acknowledge this and it keeps asking me if I’d like to subscribe. I subscribe via the apple app store so it’s possible that the New Yorker considers me some sort of 2nd class/steerage subscriber, but, if this is true then I want to pay a 2nd class/steerage rate. I want the app to remember I’m a subscriber and say, Welcome Subscriber, every time I log into it. (I want the letters of this message to be iridescent, and have a Tiffany’s silver shimmer.) And I want to stop having to restore my purchases. We’re married, remember? Now stop asking me out. Thanks.

The app on an iPad is disappointing. There’s no search or bookmarking feature, but the worst aspect is its inconsistent response to scrolling and page swiping. Been having problems with App not opening since last update for iPad. I decided to totally delete App and reload after 5 minutes. It reloaded and I had to sign in again. All is well. This experience was my first bad experience with this App. I also swiped off all pages I had visited before doing this delete. The iCloud retained all my magazine issues. Someone wrote in a review of App why they had to pay twice for a magazine when they had the print issues. Well, that extra few bucks pays the App developer and all the bugs etc that everyone talks about and getting them fixed. I also shut down my iPad and iPhone periodically to keep it running in tip top shape. Desktop computers need this as do laptops. So, why not your computer iPhone and iPad.

Meandertaal's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 4/1/18 5:52 AM
I’ve given up on using this app and retried it several times, but it still is so tedious to use. Here are a few of my main complaints. - It crashes regularly, sometimes requiring a reinstall, and reentry of the login information. - Ads are not only placed both on the side and inline, but also disrupt the reading experience. Whenever an ad refreshes, the screen goes blank for about a second, and the content is moved around. As the reader, I lose my place in the article, have to visually search for it again, and often have to scroll up or down. - Scrolling is affected by ads as well. After placing the first line of text after an ad at the top of the display, the ad placement is readjusted, and covers the first few lines that I just was about to read. As others pointed out, this is not about the content, but the user experience. While I enjoy reading other magazines on the iPad, for this one it’s back to the print version.
TelegramSam55's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 3/31/18 9:00 PM

This review in no way reflects my feelings toward the content of the magazine, which I find to be spectacular. But in regards to the app itself, heinous. Despite its claims to the contrary, The New Yorker app is not optimized for the iPhone X. Black bars across the top and bottom of the screen do not constitute an iPhone X–friendly design. I find the proportions so aesthetically bereft, getting through the content now feels a chore. Please update this app for current devices. [Update 12 March 2018] The race to become The.Worst.App.Ever continues and the latest update brings The New Yorker app so much closer to the winning spot. Now all issues that I download, including the latest one, are automatically deleted the moment I close my iPad. An absolute and utter garbage. I don’t think there has ever existed a greater gap between the quality of the content and the abysmal method of its delivery. [Update 30 Sept. 2014] Is anybody reading these comments? This app is still awful - new issues take forever to download, no automatic download in the background, random crashes. This app is an example of the perfect parasite - leeching off a superior product, confident in the knowledge that its users will continue paying for it, no matter how bad the delivery method. I have just cancelled my subscription to The New Yorker. The reason - this hideous app. Even on my brand new iPad Air the app is so slow and buggy as to be almost unusable. I have been back and forth with the (laughably incompetent) "technical support", but nothing helps. I love TNY and will re-subscribe to the paper edition, but I advise not to buy a subscription for the electronic version only - you may be very disappointed.

Given the quality of writing, the app’s quality is surprisingly poor. You can’t navigate to an issue of choice unless 1) a new issue has recently released or 2) you open the app after a period in which, by default, the on-device storage has been deleted. There was a blissful week end of Q3 2018 when they provided a simple little back scroll caret for users to navigate to their library to choose which issue to read at any time. Ah those were the days that I wish we could return to.

Love reading the New Yorker but the latest version is missing the “go back” arrow at the top left when you are in an issue so you can see all the issues. Current version basically makes you stuck in whatever issue you click on so click wisely! To the app developer- please fix this problem!
Sparky's Mum's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 12/17/18 12:40 PM
This app is unusable, stingy, ugly, out of touch and ridiculously expensive. Looks like something Trump would have his minions do. This app used to be great. I appreciated the big roll of old cartoons - a perfect distraction while waiting. I also loved reading the titles of the daily articles & when I had the time reading a few.
AdultishMale456's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 12/17/18 12:40 PM
The one star rating has nothing to do with the content produced by the New Yorker. The magazine and the writers they publish are wonderful. The app, however, has been consistently buggy. I've had to delete and reinstall it several times when issues come up. The latest issue was that all issues were no longer free, I had to pay to download them even though my subscription was valid for another few months. After wasting my time with customer support for awhile I finally just reinstalled the app. I of course had to reset my password because who remembers passwords anymore and once I logged in the issues were restored. All this trouble seemingly out of nowhere and for nothing.

Sorriest sign in from any app. Does not like its account number. Apparently it does not want online access. Dozens of attempts have not allowed me access. Delegating the app and moving on with life.
Twinpecked's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 12/17/18 12:40 PM
You are losing money with this lousy app. Won’t let me subscribe despite trying repeatedly. Gets stuck at “purchasing subscription”. Apple should have kept the NewsStand app and publishers should’ve kept their magazines there instead of creating own apps.

App worked on iPhone until now. It no longer recognizes my purchases and wants me to buy each magazine again. It acknowledges my name and address but does not acknowledge email and password and does not let me download present and previous purchases. App no longer worthwhile.

It won't accept my account number that I copied and pasted from an email that The New Yorker sent me and won't let me exit and start over. Deleted the app. Waste of my time.
tmm212's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 12/12/18 10:56 AM
The navigation is awkward and not intuitive, and the text display is very poor. I like the basic layout of articles, but text can’t be made big enough to view easily from a moderate distance (e.g., if you’re trying to read an article at the gym). Also, the issues often don’t download, with tech support’s only solution to erase and reinstall the app. Very annoying.
Vulgar demos's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 12/10/17 3:51 PM
I’ve subscribed to the magazine for years and never had any issues signing in online. Yet this app never accepts credentials. Really surprised that this app remains dysfunctional after all these years.
Mac since 512k's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 11/7/17 4:58 AM
I was trying to load the last issue for, ironically, a trip from DC to NYC. Hopeless! For what the New Yorker charges, they ought to be able to create a decent iPad app. Subscription ‘s up for renewal ... hmm.
Knacky234's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 11/4/18 1:29 PM
The content is delightful, but the app is not. About six months ago I reported that the app crashes without warning when you click on the View All Cartoons button. Customer support hasn't found a solution. I've opened another ticket on this bug.

It flashes, it crashes. Such a brilliant group of writers deserve an equally brilliant, or at lease competent group of coders! And it doesn’t improve with new versions. What is wrong with these programmers?
NomadzNet's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 11/29/18 12:30 PM
I’ve used the App for several years and haven’t had any issues except after the 12 iOS update. The app crashes whenever it’s opened and I can no longer read New Yorker magazine.
Winnie&Sasha's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 11/29/17 5:35 PM
I can’t get this to load onto my iPad. The process goes astray and never gets to the point of downloading. I have had a few trials work for awhile but I’m giving up. I like to read the magazine but I’m giving up on this frustrating nonsense.
TragicStu's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 11/24/17 3:48 PM
The newest version of this app doesn’t save the place of the article you’re reading. So if you close down the app it is really hard to find where you left reading! This is a big problem for the longer articles.
GrahamDanny's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 11/19/18 12:26 PM
I absolutely love The New Yorker magazine, however, the app consistently has terrible issues with logging in. Even after getting the password reset, I still cannot log in with my new password. This is a recurring issue, and contacting customer service is more trouble than it’s worth. I suppose I’ll just have to rely on the magazine. Unfortunate.
Chinatimt's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 11/13/17 11:18 PM
I adore the New Yorker magazine and this app now works fairly well. I do wish they would allow for zooming in on a photograph or cartoon. When you are reading an article and you want to “zoom in” an image or a cartoon in order to see it more clearly, you cannot do so. If I want to look more closely at a photograph found in an article or a cartoon, I have to take a screenshot, leave the New Yorker app and go to my Photos app to look closely at it. Most websites and apps allow you to use the two finger zoom in and zoom out feature, but not the New Yorker.

Is the app abandoned by the New Yorker? Seriously lacks upgrade and fix.
vwebster12's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 11/1/17 5:28 AM
Navigation seems designed to hide everything and challenge the user to find menus. If you use the cartoon gallery, captions do not appear for at least half of them. Gallery graphics are static and do not permit you to manually adjust to view caption

The paywall through Facebook needs a serious update and right now. I hit the wall all the time and instead of just copying the link and heading to my browser, like I’ve done for years, I decided to get a subscription. I do not want the magazine company storing my credit card, so I bought a subscription through the Apple store, figured I’d be able to login through the FB paywall. Ha! Nope. I need to call an 800 number first. WTH?
earcandy!'s Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 10/9/18 3:22 PM
Agree w/ a few of the other reviews I read about the general klutziness of the iOS app. (I spent decades in tech worlds, so nope, not agreeing because I’m tech-averse.) It’s seemingly designed to replicate the look/feel of an actual issue, as opposed to taking advantage of being a web app. Plus, I’m a paid subscriber, w/ automatic deductions thru iTunes. Why doesn’t opening up a link to a NYer article from another site then pop up an option to open up the app instead of staying in browser form? And if I go directly to the app rather than opening a link, it’s not recognizing me as a subscriber. So then, where’s the app’s prompt to log-in? Or better yet, a prominent form or button for logging in? NYer app has already decremented my “free” article count to the point I have none left 1 week into the month, so it’s following me...but doesn’t recognize an IMEI address that’s signed in before? Even though I regularly delete cookies as I did recently — as a multiple hacking victim through unprotected business databases, I don’t let sites retain my login data — even neanderthal hospital apps have accounted for that, as well as they proffer the app & put logging in for account holders front and center. Please fix soon? And advise when done? I may delete the app out of pure frustration.
Ali292's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 10/6/18 6:21 PM
Woke up today eager to read the new edition only to find the app repeatedly crashing. Black screen and crash, white screen and crash. Just completely dysfunctional. I tried redownloading, reinstalling, re-logging in, etc, but nothing worked. Nor does the customer service email work (so don't waste your time trying to tell them of your troubles--you'll only get an error). My subscription is digital only, so now I'm paying for literally no access to this magazine. Wondering if the digital team was part of Condé Nast's recent layoffs...

I couldn’t even sign in and I have access to the New Yorker!
BikeNJ's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 10/28/18 8:15 PM
It’s doing exactly what is should do; select an issue to read, use table of content to jump to specific sections, scroll right or left to switch sections, up and down within an article. You can also always jump back to table of content. Change font size. Same user interface as the iPad which I used for years. I am not sure why other gave it such low ratings. What are they expecting from this application?

BizAppsGuy's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 10/2/18 5:20 AM
Basically unusable since totally unintuitive and absolutely not enjoyable. What are they thinking tarnishing their brand of good content with such a terrible digital experience? Time to spend some money and put modern, digitally savvy designers on the job of redoing this app.
LynxAlot's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 10/16/18 6:53 AM
I’ve subscribed for over 20 years and am a devoted fan but this app is kind of embarrassing considering the institution it represents! Signing in is nearly impossible, trying to reset your password only results in waiting and waiting for a page from Condé Nast to load...I have to remove the app, it’s pretty useless
kulchavulcha's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 10/13/17 2:44 AM
This is a great magazine and consequently great to read in either print or e-copy. I especially like the “article view” which instantly converts any article into a single column that one can easily read by simply scrolling from start to finish. Especially comfy for wearers of no-line bifocals who have to live with a very narrow reading area on their lenses. No head rocking for them in order to scan whole pages.
hyspaceX-14's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 10/12/18 6:28 AM
It’s October 2018 and New Yorker’s mobile app still not optimized for iPhone X. The resolution glitch makes it looks horrible on my iPhone XS Max. If you do care your digital subscriber, please update this app!
Gamera!'s Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 10/12/18 5:56 PM
Needs bookmarks for articles you want to read later, full screen view (especially for iPhone X, etc) where the toolbars completely disappear, better font controls, options to send the article to Instapaper, and so one. But it is possible to skim the magazine, quickly find an article to read, and read all the cartoons at once.
Clare (Infusionite)'s Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 1/6/18 12:18 PM
As a paid print subscriber, I was excited to download this iPhone app. To my horror, usability was just about non-existent. (Condé Nast: if you need a “how to use this app” welcome screen, something is amiss.) Every function, from navigation to search, was so counter-intuitive that it was actually more laborious than simply reading the print magazine. And don’t get get me started on the memory hogging. It’s a shame that terrible app design is standing in the way of excellent journalism, as I’m sure most users would give up out of sheer frustration before ever consuming the great content hidden within. Unless this is a publisher’s ploy to drive print subscriptions, I suggest a radical redesign complete with proper user testing and modern UX standards.

I wrote the review below approximately one year ago. Nothing has changed. Simply the most infuriating app you could add to your device. The magazine is great, but this app is made for those who do not have enough anger and/or frustration in their lives.
underdosed's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 1/3/18 10:23 AM
This review in no way reflects my feelings toward the content of the magazine, which I find to be spectacular. But in regards to the app itself, heinous. Despite its claims to the contrary, The New Yorker app is not optimized for the iPhone X. Black bars across the top and bottom of the screen do not constitute an iPhone X–friendly design. I find the proportions so unaesthetic, getting through the content now feels a chore. Please update this app for current devices. Or, at the very least, amend your app’s currently false description.
Feimai's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 1/29/18 11:18 PM

aburgess17's Review of Nyer Print EditionReviewed on 1/19/18 1:35 AM
I tried this app 3 years ago and gave up. I trekked again today because I felt certain that Condé Nast would have hired a junior developer by now. No such luck, this app is still crap. The account management piece just blows. It can’t find my address; it can’t find my subscriber number. I’m looking right at the label!! Shameful.

Why is this app so awful? Well it was designed for iPhone 6, it often bugs out and quits, it sometimes gets rid of all the magazines you had downloaded, it logs you out and sometimes is difficult about linking your subscription, and it looks ugly, despite the beauty of the magazine itself. I just want an app that does justice to the amazing work done for this mag.
