Reviewed on 9/8/19 1:44 PMEach new user interface update makes the experience just a little bit worse. Navigating the hierarchy of feeds used to be quick, but now I’m forced to constantly switch between targets on the top and bottom of the screen. The Favorites target - unsurprisingly my most common or *favorite* target is moved into a harder to reach, harder to find place. Moving between feeds is both harder and less smooth. Images in feeds are rendered somewhere between ‘badly’ and ‘no one would ever want this, ever’. And the app now seems to have tap areas for local navigation that take me to the wrong place far more often than not. Disappointed. Considering reverting to former U.K., or just switching to another app. Anyone recommend an alternative?

Reviewed on 9/8/19 1:44 PMCurrently they're not labeled at all. If you want to search articles, you'll get a message overlaying the search results telling you "get Power search!". But what if i just want regular search? 🤔 There's no button to close the overlay, making me think power search is the only way...and it takes me to a window sign up for Pro. This also happens on the desktop version btw, so I think this is more deception than bad design. Another example is when they announced the revamp with new features and we can filter out articles by phrases or keywords. But there was no option for me to enable this in the settings and after a bit of searching, found that this is a Pro only feature, WHICH they neglected to mention in the blog post. Nice. I'm not against companies wanting to make money and I think subscription models are appropriate for online services like Feedly (that have to run on servers in order to work). But users should have a choice and we should not be deceived by Pro only features. Things like search, have it grayed it and label it Pro Only. Done. This whole thing was irritating enough for me to shell out $5 for Reeder. Good riddance.

Reviewed on 9/8/19 1:44 PMHere’s the deal. I love the new tools that come with Feedly. Marking things as read with a swipe and the scroll features are awesome. I have had the new version for a few weeks (as long as the newest version has been available) and there is one major problem. Websites like Gizmodo have new content that initially shows up as a preview. You click on “read more” and then it opens up the whole thing. With this update every time you click on an article it opens up a new web page in safari rather than just open up the article within the app itself (which is what the old version did). Because I like progress and I really feel that they are moving the app in a great direction I stuck with it despite that issue. I searched Feedly forums and sent messages via twitter and never heard back about this issue or how to fix it. I thought that maybe I read in the forum that a newer version would fix that but it never came. For now I am going to the classic version and might keep the new version on my phone and check it periodically to see if they fixed it. I don’t read articles on my phone because I hate the extra steps of clearing out open pages and saved articles are piling up and becoming irrelevant. It’s a first world problem that I don’t care to tolerate. You should use Feedly and you should use the new version unless you read Gizmodo, in which case you should use the classic version. Update: Feedly took the time to respond and answer my question. I never stopped using them and am grateful that they took the time to solve my embarrassingly easy problem. Thanks!

Reviewed on 12/6/18 12:31 PMLove, love, love this app. However, I’m not a fan of the navbar on the bottom with the new update. One of the biggest reasons I liked this app so much was its minimalism, simplicity, and design language. Sadly, the latest update ruined it for me by placing green icons on the bottom screen. It used to be very clean and filled the entire screen with content. It looked really great on my iPhone XS Max. The developers should really consider bringing this back. At least consider having an option to enable the previous UI design. I would really appreciate that. Outside of that, wow, the animations and the other improvements are just amazing. I would just like to tuck away the rarely used options like it was before. Thanks for the hard work. Update: just discovered that one icon in particular, on the navbar (the search icon), is completely unusable unless you pay the $6 monthly fee for Feedly Pro. This is an unapologetic marketing tactic designed to get people to pay. I understand you have to generate revenue, but charging $6.00 monthly instead of a one time charge is pushing it. So not only is the search feature in the way of content visibility, but also wholly unusable. Sadly, I have uninstalled the app unless this changes, and judging how most companies operate these days, I doubt there will be a change. No one should have to pay monthly to be able to search for things on a news aggregator lol.

Your new fonts are bad. -Scrolling, which can be disabled, isn’t ideal and I’m not fond of the cut off presentation at the bottom of the screen. It also makes the mark as read option more annoying to use, as the bottom of the scroll won’t auto mark because it stops dead. -After I enabled page flipping, it still has that cut off headline at the bottom and it also doesn’t do a complete page flip. The next page has the last article from the previous page. This is poor design. -Make Read Later simple again. It’s no longer a bookmark affair, now I have to sort everything I want to pass. -Thank you for keeping Feedly Classic as a downloadable option. I have to ask though, what is better about this version? What has been improved besides animation? It feels like a step back and a dumbing down of a great product.

This is a s***** waste of time, and for the life of me I can’t see the reason for it even from Feedly’s point of view. Since Feedly doesn’t offer any kind of app support, I can’t report this issue, so leaving this review is pretty much my only option. Not sure if it’s just me doing something wrong, but in the old app, the “mark all as read” button in the today view would mark the 12-ish last articles in the today view as read, then load the next 12 articles while staying in the today view. In the redesign, however, it jumps to the “all” view when I tap this button, which doesn’t make sense to me; why would I want to go to the all view after reading just the first few articles in the today view? The checkmark at the top of the today view works as expected however. Would be nice if the pull up gesture and “mark all as read” button at the bottom of the today view did the same (and didn’t jump to a different view). Thanks for the great app and service.

Reviewed on 12/22/18 12:45 PMLike the app overall, and a long time user. Really glad to see the time and effort applied to updates, especially one so extensive. The new UI is a bit jarring at first. I generally use a dark theme and most simple text only layout for the list. I’ve mostly adapted. Two biggest annoyances: 1. The use of bright colors. The launch screen is bright white and says something like “Always be learning!” Nice affirmation, but I use dark mode so it’s a flash in my eye at every launch which is annoying. Similar to that is the new bright green “Good job” button after I finish off articles. Tone it all down please for us dark mode folks. 2. I’m sure the mark-as-read/read-later gestures are more standard for iOS (and more discoverable), but boy do I miss the ability to more quickly mark individual articles or the entire screen read or unread. I used to go through two or three screens of articles marking the page read then unmarking one or two things, next page the same, then refresh and I was left with my hand full of items for later; I don’t want to go to some other place or app to read later. This new interface doesn’t let me do that. I can mark read on scroll but that doesn’t let me mark all I can see at once, and doesn’t let me unmark things, because if i scroll, they get marked again. As I said in the title, change is hard. If I must adapt I will, but it feels like a big step back for my style of using the app. I read somewhere I could turn ok “classic” mode, but I can’t find that. Still searching. [UPDATE]: Really NOT liking the Mark All As Read button. It also clears the screen instead of letting me go back and unmark some articles I want to keep first.

I loved Feedly, read it everyday. It was clear and simple to set up and use. Now it’s practically indecipherable to me. Developers just seem to want to make changes whether they are actually improvements or not. Making an app more complicated to use is definitely not an improvement. How do I go back to the old version? Switched to Feedly classic. I wonder how many of the few positive reviews of the new version are actually posted by Feedly employees, because I have a hard time believing that anyone would like having to go through more steps to get the same results. For instance, old Feedly click on an article go immediately to web page. New Feedly, it takes you to another page that may have two more lines of information. Then you have to click again to go to web page. What a boneheaded change. I sometimes think developers live in their own little universe and don’t really think through how things are going to work in the real universe.

Their idea of an update might be practical from a user-sense if everyone will set aside functionality and intuitive design expectations and settle for merely a tarted-up pig. On the plus side: a classic Feedly version remains available (for the moment) as a separate App.

Reviewed on 12/15/18 12:41 PMSometimes change is necessary to move the product forward so that is relevant to new users. But let’s be honest, this rollout was done very poorly. A lot of the things many people miss about the old version actually are available in the new one if you dig into the settings. But unfortunately Feedly didn’t see fit to provide any instruction on how to find them. They have been very responsive on Twitter, which is good. And some of the things I can’t do anymore have been replaced by arguably better features. Unfortunately it was annoyingly hard to figure out how to use these new features and cost me way too much time. For what it’s worth I would recommend rolling out changes incrementally rather than overhauling the whole system all at once. Two last points: 1. One thing Feedly did correctly was to make their old version available in the iTunes Store. It is called Feedly classic. So everyone who’s complaining about the update can simply download the app. 2. Give an optometrist a call. Both your day and tonight settings are not ideal for the eyes. There’s a very simple contrast and color palette you can implement that would be much better for day and night. This is one of the things I was really hoping would be fixed in the new version.

Reviewed on 12/14/18 8:11 AMAs someone who works on user interfaces I am disappointed to see that an app I love ultimately rolled out a “looks nice” update that actually makes a lot of things harder to do. You used to be able ability to quickly skim page by page and “long swipe left” to mark all on the page as read while “short swipe right” to pick out a few key articles to keep unread. Now you must mark read or unread individually on each item. On a keyboard with hot keys this is manageable, but on mobile device this is A LOT of swiping gestures. This was pretty important to those of us with large feeds to keep items read/unread manageable. Taking it away pretty much makes this app unusable for large feeds. There is no new order of operations to get used to that can replicate the above. The mark all in page feature simply appears to be gone. Finally one criticism is mark read and unread are the same swipe action now so the user must carefully discern read/unread status to make sure the article flipped to the right status by looking at opacity of the text rather than trust on simple muscle memory of swipe right or swipe left. Imagine a light that is controlled with switch with obvious on/off position vs just a button. Which one is easier to deal with? Same principle. Feedly used to have one of the best examples interfaces and I would often hold it up as an example to other devs so disappointed to see this new update just makes it look and work like other generic timeline apps instead of a true Reader app Would rate 1 star since I can no longer use this effectively, but +1 bonus star for the developers keeping feedly classic around as a separate app though instead of removing it. I will be promptly switching to that instead.

I’ve already read the three posts (or “articles”) so is this asking me to mark all other unread posts as read? From that screen it’s hard to get back to the list of other unread posts. The old version used to just allow me to scroll through unread posts, and that was better. There seems to be a bug in the “recently read” section. I can’t see what I’ve just read but instead it’s showing me posts from a few weeks ago. Re-sorting doesn’t work. The app now tells me how long I took to read or skim through the posts. Being able to tie an article to multiple boards at once is also nice. On the iPad I've noticed better support for the pencil where it was barely usable before. Thank you!!! Now that I discovered “long pressing” a news article and the “mark above as read” feature, I’m absolutely in love! Feedly took my weird, hacky way of reading/clearing and made it super efficient; I just scroll/browse articles and clear/long press from time to time. This fits the mental map of how I use the app perfectly and I’m amazed they added this feature. The one improvement I’d make is to onboard the “mark above as read” feature more organically. When Feedly sees that I’ve marked a few items in a row as “read”, teach me about the “mark above as read” feature. I only discovered it out of frustration/disappointment that my old way of clearing articles was gone. There’s too much to learn in a big “onboarding” walkthrough.
