Reviewed on 9/4/18 4:07 PMI have use this app since its inception, historically it has been great. Most recently it has started having problems and tech support does not return my phone calls. The newest batch of problems came when their weather source for the textual weather data changed something so weather no longer updated in WingX. That issue has halfway resolved, now it updates but the TAF displays messed up data that is somewhat readable?!? At the same time that problem popped up their ability to display Nexrad moving map data from ADS-B quit working too. So now you can get ADS-B text based weather updates but can’t see the Nexrad on the moving map. Using the competitors app with the same ADS-B receiver and the Nexrad displays perfectly. Hoping for a quick fix or I will have to permanently switch over to the competition so I can get the Nexrad info!!! I will update this if/when it is fixed.

MS11111's Review of Wingx
Reviewed on 12/16/18 1:03 PMUpdate: since they recently added regular notams, this app is perfectly usable both for planning and in the air. As far as SV, there are no mountains around here, but I thought the SV would help in finding an airport or runway if the windshield became frosted over or covered in oil. I figured since I had the ipad anyway, the $100 was cheap if I needed it. I also bought the $795 Levil mini G AHRS figuring it would be a backup to the attitude indicator and turn coordinator if both went out in IMC (works OK with an app called ihud). What they offer is nothing near synthetic vision that any of us have seen - albeit anything else is a whole lot more money. I was hoping to get something close to the SV in the Garmin 796. Basically, if you are near the ground the ground will turn an orangish brown or red, depending on how low you are. If there are lighted towers, most seem to appear as little black sticks on the green background. Unlighted towers don't seem to appear. Some sticks were there where there were no towers that I could see. Flying directly at or next to a 2000 foot tower at 1500 feet just showed me a black line on a green background, not something that was about to k*** me. Runways also look like little black sticks. There is no way to see the difference, except a runway may not be standing straight up.. It didn't have all the runways for the airports I was looking at in the air (Midway showed 2 runways, and there are MANY runways there), and there is no way I could spot a runway and line up with it. Even on final there was no way to see the runway in-front of me, which looked like a black stick for a tower. More useful for avoiding mountains? If you want to blow $100 to see if it will help you from hitting them, I'd suggest NOT buying the $795 AHRS unit. I don't think it's useful with WINGX. I sold the one I bought. The rest of the program works OK. Clunkier to use than foreflight, and slower to update the screen, but OK. The weather in WingX isn't as slick as foreflight. The Baron radar ain't very good. Support is pretty bad to non-existent. They never answered my email with questions about the SV. I didn't get a phone call until maybe 5 days later, after I left a voicemail. The support guy said they were all out of town. I couldn't download updates one day and left a message (they all timed out), and when they called back a day later they said they were upgrading their servers. All in all they don't seem to think much of their customers. I'll probably continue to subscribe to the basic version for $75 in the future as a backup for foreflight. And since I got burned on their "SV" I doubt I'll be tempted to try anything else from them that they come out with in the future. The support guy that did call me back told me that their SV wasn't for runways. I didn't see anything saying that on their website, and I saw press releases specifically saying it showed runways. The $100 SV was just throwing $100 in the garbage. Live and learn.

However Garmin appears to have upped the standard as far as EFB 3D synthetic vision is concerned. Garmin just released what looks like a better 3D synthetic vision product. This is an area that I believe WingX should update and upgrade sooner than later. But in fairness, I guess we are talking Garmin here (king of the GPS and provider of a huge array of avionics products). I don't know if any current EFB can compete with Garmin in this area. Hopefully I'm wrong and WingX will respond with, if not a better product, a 3D synthetic vision upgrade that is equivalent.

Reviewed on 12/16/18 1:03 PMI have been using WingX for two years and find it to be excellent when it works. Unfortunately, it suffers (as does Foreflight) from the Apple bluetooth bug which causes it to occasionally lose connection with my Dual external gps, rendering the moving map useless. On a recent ifr flight, 30 minutes before landing, I got the 10% battery life warning, shut down the iPad until just before landing, and turned it back on only to find that it was unable to connect to the gps (which was working fine with lots of satellites and 66% battery left). I used my iPhone (held by my wife) for the remainder of the flight. In my opinion, they made a very bad programming decision to only invoke the "Auto APD" (automatically display the apt diagram when landing) with a chart in place. On another ifr flight in vfr conditions, I landed at an apt with a very confusing set of taxiways and almost had a runway incursion due to the apt diagram not displaying. I can't imagine a situation where one wouldn't want to see the apt diagram after landing. (At least, there should be an option to always show the airport diagram). This app suffers from very marginal support -- I have made numerous phone calls and sent many emails without any response from the company. On my one recent successful interaction with them, they said that my email was mistakenly put into the trash (as was my recent phone call, apparently). It would also be nice if they had a more complete user manual (Foreflight shines in both of there areas). For these reasons, together with the extreme difficulty in using the iPad display in bright sunlight, I have chosen to return to my former policy over the last 30 years and use paper charts.

Reviewed on 11/19/18 12:34 PMI take time to compare things that I purchase, especially if the are of substantial or ongoing cost, such as an EFB is. I want to select WingX Pro because of the totality of features but there are two glaring issues: 1.) No electronic users guide. Consider, every instrument in the cockpit has a guide for its use that can be found in the POH or AFM. You can store both of them on your EFB and that becomes very useful if you have to reference it in flight. If you use an EFB and need to reference the users guide in flight for some frequently unused feature or perhaps because you do not fly often enough to remember the intricacies of the EFB, it is better to have a users guide to reference in flight. When newer versions of the EFB are released, the learning curve goes back up again. Being able to check your EFB Users Guide while flying and study it when not flying is the best way become proficient in the EFB. Access to the Internet, watching videos to find what you are looking for and trying to determine which video to watch are not things to be doing, single pilot, while flying. 2.) When WingX Pro displays the sectional, everything is fine while flying due north or if you are using the North up orientation but as soon as you use track or north up and the map rotates from true north, confusion ensues. If you fly with a glass cockpit, with a MFD, this might not be a problem but if you fly with a six-pack, or you use your EFB as a way to confirm what is on your MFD, the time wasted looking down, mentally orienting the sectional (physically turning the EFB) so that you can read information on the WingX Pro sectional, you might find yourself spending an inordinate amount of time looking down, not out. In a pattern or busy terminal area, this is dangerous. I believe the FAA should mandate, similar to POH and AFM requirements, all portable avionics in the cockpit have either a paper manual or an electronic manual in textual/pictorial form and absolutely NO videos, like most other EFB programs. I am NOT saying the instructional videos are not useful. In fact, they are very much so. But I do not want to have to take the time to watch a video when I can thumb through an active PDF to find relevant information. My 3 star rating reflects the importance I place on the two issues. If they were satisfactorily addressed, I would be giving 5 stars.

I am amazed at the functionality and user-friendly nature of the app. Its usefulness is without peer.

Reviewed on 11/19/18 12:34 PMDoes so many things VFR and IFR, lots of handy, functional little shortcuts to make it easier to use in realtime. The only suggestion I'd have to add would be to overlay sigmets/convective sigmets/airmets over the chart in real time. That would be a lot easier than flipping between this and skyvector.

Reviewed on 11/19/18 12:34 PMI got ready to fly a couple of weeks ago, I updated the databases in the software, boom DFW terminal chart gone? So it being Saturday I called support, left message... They called me back Monday and said, ohh we are changing the way it works, so we removed them. Ok, so where do I get it now? Uhh terminal charts will be back in next update.... When is that. Uhh soon... So today I get ready to fly, and the weather is 4 hours old.... It won't update to newer... I once again check the website, no mention of outage. I left message again for support.

Obviously this is a huge problem, and as a long time customer of WingX I'm beginning to seriously consider making the switch to foreflight. These little bugs that we are still dealing with are absolutely ridiculous.

Reviewed on 11/19/18 12:34 PMI do like this app but it could be much better. The fact that they give CFIs a free subscription can't be beat. Very smart on their behalf. The user interface needs a makeover for 21st century human factors. The sectional is very cluttered at the default settings. Right out of the box many annoying features must be disabled to make the sectional user friendly for a pilot. It certainly seems it was designed for people who are not pilots or cannot read sectionals. For example, "Heading Ind," a gigantic annoying compass rose, VORs, state borders, etc, etc, all must be disabled in the settings before I use the app. All this data is right there on the sectional already and is just clutter overlaid by the app. A note to the developers: please, please, please for the love of God make there a way to disable those annoying airport labels on the sectional. Also, as stated below, the ability to selectively download individual sectionals as well as terrain data for the synthetic vision (which cannot be used without an external AHRS, anyway) should be features added in the next update.

Reviewed on 11/19/18 12:34 PMI have found WingX Pro misses traffic that displays accurately on FreeFlight System's ADS-B View app, and also on ForeFlight. I have the FreeFlight Rangr 978 UAT transceiver, so have ADS-B Out/In in my Bonanza, and should get all traffic available, not just partial traffic. I find I do receive more targets with the other apps mentioned above. I reported this problem to the tech team in the past and sent screenshots, but Jim stated they could not replicate the problem. I thought, OK, maybe the range or some other circumstances caused the problem, but this morning as I visually observed a Cessna pass about 1000 ft above me that WingX did not show, but after switching to check with the other apps mentioned and did see that traffic displayed, I am no longer going to use WingX.

Reviewed on 11/19/18 12:34 PMI have been using this app for more than five years and know it well, many of my fellow pilots show me Foreflight and I show them features that I would not fly without. The biggest is the split screen, I can have my sectional or ifr chart on one screen and an approach plate on the other with geo reference of my plane on both. If you fly ifr, is is the best app out there. Download it and give it a try. You will love it.

Reviewed on 11/19/18 12:34 PMI took a four year hiates from flying and got back into it again last year. I had the best of avionics including a Garman 430. This program is really better in many respects and Only requires an iPad and a GPS transmitter. I'm only flying vfr now but could not have done the flights I have done in the busy northeast corrider weaving my way around different air spaces. It's a great GPS and has many many other functions that I don't really use. I Love this program. thank you PS I got my IFR currency and love using the approach plates. Especially like the Geo referencing so I can see my plane's exact position as I do an approach. I have no problems with slow redraw rate or anything else. Support has been excellent. Program has everything – flight planning, E6B, IFR and VFR for maps, approach plates, Airport information, and weather. Just got ADS-B– from Open Flight and am looking forward to using it on my iPad to display weather and other aircraft. Great program thank you

Reviewed on 11/19/18 12:34 PMIt’s hard to overstate what a great application this is. The moving map… awesome. Reliability… awesome. Ease of getting information on, say, airports while inflight and making adjustments to the mission “on the fly”… awesome. Seamless integration with my Dual GPS or wifi… awesome. Seriously. That said, there are some elements I wish were better. For example, the learning curve is steep and the documentation is disjointed, much of it referencing outmoded interfaces. Part of the learning curve issue, I think, is that the user interface is not always intuitive. I often find myself asking, hmm… where did I find that last time? Once you get it though, wow. The second, perhaps bigger reason for deducting one star: flight planning is adequate. There are far better tools available, for free, online that what WingX provides for flight planning. This is more a statement on the state of flight planning tools than on WingX’s competence in that area. I’m disappointed to have to continue to use external apps for that reason, but in a pinch, WingX will do the job.

Imnot sure whether or not the problem is the app or some connectability setting. Ive written two emails and a week later I have yet to hear back.
