Legowars's Review of Maps 3d Pro
Reviewed on 9/6/18 12:51 PMWe tested this out on a 20 mile snowshoe. My $600 Garmin ran out of battery half way there. This app kept tracking. I’ve been using it now for years. You don’t have to load extra maps that cost hundreds more, you don’t have to bring an extra item, just your phone, the mileage and elevation are accurate, it works reliably without service even deep in the North Cascades, and it is far more intuitive to use. It allows you to plot your own route but has most hiking trails already available. This is better than Gaia, Carin, and All trails. Please stay in business forever 🙏🏼

Reviewed on 8/31/19 1:27 PMThe map data and UI are both great, makes the app a joy to use. The only downside is there are some iOS features that they have called behind on, like background support, and layout for an iPad screen.

Reviewed on 8/31/19 1:27 PMThe app is useful, but like many others it can be frustrating when trying to plan a route. Often times there may be small gaps or sections of unmarked trail between established trails on the map. There is no way that I have found to use a combination of route calculation AND direct path measurements within the same planned route. So either the route calculation winds around an obscure path to connect 2 route points, or you’re stuck connecting a million route points, even on the parts that cover established map trails. Really there should be a setting to be able to change the routing options between set route points, instead of just for the whole planned route. Other features seem great, but I really wanted this app to accurately plan routes ahead of time, and it just doesn’t deliver in that realm.

Reviewed on 8/31/19 1:27 PMYou have to download maps in small sections, unless you pay $14 for the ability to download 1gig sections, which I don't mind the Dev making money, just an interesting business model. Frustrate the heck out of the customer to pay money. An odd business model but one that does have a valid angle. Most hikers I know are outside of Cellular range and while this app handles offline maps, be aware you need to pay a small fee, $4. Originally this was included in the app, hence map downloads but now it appears to be an upgrade. So this is a feature that was removed. Planning a big camping trip, well plan on a couple of hours to downloads maps, yes even with large map downloads. On the positive side, I do like this app and I want to love it but I just can't. I use it, along with MapOut and Topo Maps+ and what's interesting is that all three give different readings. From a privacy prospective, be aware the Dev does have rights to access you trails, tracks, etc. per the privacy policy. In my opinion the Developer should allow for whole states to be downloaded for a reasonable fee, especially considering that Apple host and downloads the file, up to 3gb I believe. So I have adjusted my two stars to three BUT back to two because of removing offline as a now paid feature.

Reviewed on 8/31/19 1:27 PMMy hiking group used Maps3D ALL the time exclusively because we were able to exchange tracks via email. Now, when it is emailed, it comes up with gibberish. What happened? We are now exploring different apps to use that we can send GPX. Also, lately, it’s not been working as well. Very difficult to bring up the map whilst hiking. Just grid lines...so disappointed as I’ve used it for four years now and I have so many tracks in there. Would love it, if it could be resolved. That would be a five star rating.

Reviewed on 8/31/19 1:27 PM[Update] My initial review was based on an experience involving a bad connection. Once that was sorted out it actually worked as advertised, though it still loads slowly when tested on numerous internet platforms. Unless you intend to buy the full app (in app purchase) there my be better free apps out there for planning a trip. If you are intending to go all in, I think it is a very helpful app to visualize an area you are thinking of hiking through. I have not used it on the trail, so I can’t add any info about using it in the field.
