LOLGEVOS's Review of Geocaching
Reviewed on 8/29/18 3:59 AMThis app should really have an expert mode. This app doesn't let you view profiles from logs. What's even worse is that if a cache is disabled, typing in the GC code would return an "invalid code" message. This app is utter garbage and I wish groundspeak would either fix it or k*** it. Trying to open a link to a cache to put it on my watch list opens up this sorry excuse for an app instead. And guess what, this app doesn't have the option to add a cache to my watch list. Have to use computer. Also, a huge annoying bug is that url links that I want to open in a browser get diverted to the app, but the app never opens the cache page. So all url links die. Reviewed on 8/1/18 5:42 AMI very much enjoy geocaching so much so that I paid for the $10 premium version back when it was supposed to be a one-time fee. That money was stolen from me when this subscription-based premium version came out. I would rather spend that money on actual caches to place around town and on my travels. I would like to get my husband into geocaching as well (not to mention all the friends and family who were planning on joining). Sadly, this will likely not happen anytime soon as the $10 I paid was stolen from me, and he's not particularly fond of said deceit and the company that did the deceiving. If you want to make money, why don't you stop being so greedy and actually allow your user to spend their dollars on the physical (and expensive) merch. you sell? I was so excited to hide a golf ball, w** of fake gum, etc. but I don't see that ever happening now... you had the potential to make so much money off of me; hope you're happy with the measly $10 you stole, GroundSpeak, because that's all you're ever going to receive until you change your ways. I'd even pay the $10 again with no hard feelings. Seriously, I'd pay $30—make that $60 including my husband—for permanency. Whoever advised you to make the switch to subscriptions must get a lot of money off of you in the short-term and doesn't really care how long you stay in business. Hope you realize soon your best long term interest is in benefiting your customers long term rather than your pockets short term. Much love

Reviewed on 6/6/18 5:05 AMWell, we have been Geocaching for a couple years now, and we have seen many improvements in the app over that time. We continue to look forward to even more improvements over time... A few suggestions that we would like to see (in no particular order... lol!) #1- We would like to be able to look up caches by their name, instead of GC#. #2- We would like to be able to look up other Geocachers, view their profile, and view (at least) their HIDES. #3- We would LOVE to receive notifications via SMS/text message (though this is probably a website request, not the app... sorry!) #4- We would REALLY like to be able to “like” posted logs, and even be able to leave short messages in response to the log (similar to Facebook posts) #5- We would like to be able to select more than one trackable to “visit” a cache by clicking an “All Visit” option (or only certain trackables and not others...), similar to the website feature. #6- I would like for the symbol for my hides to be a customizable emoji, or at minimum, be a different colored star than the current yellow. It is so similar to the smiley faces, it can be overlooked! (eg. Pink?) #7- We would like to be able to see caches that have not been found yet as distinguishable from other similar caches, for those of us who like to make a dash for the FTF! (eg. the current symbol with a red exclamation point in the middle, or a new symbol altogether...) I have realized this has become quite a lengthy review, and we hope that it doesn’t come off negatively or seem that we are unappreciative of the changes made. There have been some great improvements, and we like the app much more now than when we first started caching... We feel that some of our suggestions may bring the Geocaching community together, more that it already is... we are so happy to be a part of it, and would like to thank you all for all of the time and effort put into this tool! Much thanks from CarFam99! 🚗👨👩👧👧99

By gaiting away all caches above level 2 difficulty, Groundspeak has made the app nearly useless to anyone but premium members, pushing out once avid players and seriously hamstringing our ability to entice new geocachers. There were already premium caches, so by what justification did this company decide to hold the rest of them for ransom on mobile? At this point, I wish I could take back every dollar I ever spent on Groundspeak over the years because I feel so utterly betrayed. I never want the community to forget about what they’ve done. Do not download this app unless you are ready to pay the $30 every year to make it useful and are also willing to hope they never delete THIS app for something even more expensive in the future. The features available with a premium membership are because those people pay for the service. Groundspeak / Geocaching is no different than any other service that has a free basic and a paying premium membership system. The bottom line is it does what it says it will do. That being said, I am giving it 4 stars (I would give it 4.5 or even 4.75 if I could, just not a full 5) because I still find little glitches and some limitations that annoy me (i.e. only being able to see /load caches if zoomed in under a certain level / limit on number of caches visible at one time). Where I am, caches are spread out and I would rather see a wide view rather than needing to scroll over and then load a new area. But given the option of the app on a phone or a GPS that I have to upload and its other limitations, I choose the app on a smart phone any day (where I still have cell service).

In fact, I'll go as far as to say that the free app USED to be the worst thing that ever happened to geocaching. There was an influx of people who had zero investment in the game, who did more damage than the dreaded "muggles," having zero concern for returning things as found or for not getting muggled themselves. So this app now basically requires paid membership, which is probably a good thing. The app continues to improve and add more features, and I believe this will all end as a win-win for those of us that love the game!

This app does have one nice feature (not new). My wife and I geocache under one name. When we find a cache she writes the first draft of the log and I sign the physical log. Then later we alternately edit the e-logs until we are both satisfied and submit. The app makes this very easy. If only it weren't so poorly organized. Go buy Cachly. It is 10 times better in organization, layout, and operation. As far as the fees for membership go, get over it. There are ~75 people in Seattle working their butts off to keep Geocaching going. Wes1y's Review of Geocaching
Reviewed on 4/16/18 1:08 PMThis app has almost no point in existing. THAT SEEMS HARSH!...let me explain. This gives quick easy access for geo caching if you have a cell signal, with the fact that the GUI is easy to use. HOwEVER! It restricts access to certain ones based on difficulty so you can't access it regardless. Well you can use a desktop(laptop) browser to get coordinates and directly put it into the google maps app on your phone. Rendering the restriction an annoyance. Better yet if the cache is above a certain difficulty and you can't access it on the app, you can go into your phones' browser and access the "desktop" version of the website, rendering the restrictions of this app sort of useless. However you must now use the desktop gui with awkward touch controls if you're willing to deal with that, if not, see the first tip. The app makes it easy for people that want a brisk walk to an easy adventure, but makes a heavy handed gesture that it restricts access to certain ones behind that membership paywall. If the cache is out of cell signal, insert coordinates to your $100+ gps device, OR download offline maps.(which is a function of this app if you pay the membership, worth paying for, (it makes it easier to do the activity)) This app makes the less difficult ones quick and easy to access, log and all that fun stuff, updating information on the fly, with a sleek GUI that works well and is simple to use. VERY COOL! However it restricts access to certain ones that just, in the end, makes the process just as slow as without the app. So if your out with your friends at say dq or something and your like"hey lets do this!" as a spur of the moment decision, it makes it very useful, unless its a difficult geocache which just makes it cumbersome and potentially keeping people away from doing so on purpose, unless you pay for the membership. If you plan ahead you can bypass the app altogether, rendering the app USELESS. It's a very cool idea, being able speed up that process, but just has an elephant in it's room. If anything the membership should be the way it is with the sending automatically to garmin, pocket queries, lists, premium caches and all that because thats worth paying for the membership. Purposefully making it harder for you to do what the app wants you to do is unintuitive, heavy handed and backwards, and is easily bypassed by simply not using the app. I want to like it because it has everything going for it, but this, in the end, keeps the app unopened, and my phone in my pocket. Because if your actively geo caching and planning ahead, there is no more use for the app unless the cache difficulty is less than two stars. So around town thats out in the open, cool but anything more and it stays in the pocket because it isn't a reason to pay for the membership and just ends up NOT BEING USED.

T Krick's Review of Geocaching
Reviewed on 3/23/18 2:18 PMI've been geocaching on and off for five or six years and it's always been a lot of fun. This was back when there were two separate geocaching apps - a free one and a $10 version that gave you full access. I used the free one since I didn't think the paid app was worth the price, which while significantly cheaper than an actual GPS, it was very expensive for a mobile app. However, I would much rather pay a one-time $10 payment then submit myself to Groundspeak's new way of doing business. While the previous payment could be thought of as buying a tool, a subscription-based service makes absolutely no sense in this context. Directly from Apple: "Successful freemium apps operate as services that are continuously supported, often requiring sustained content development to retain users." $10 every three months gets you access to sustained content NOT created by Groundspeak. Think about it - every non-basic geocache someone places is providing more reason for someone to pay this company to access it. The people creating these geocaches are not paid by Groundspeak. Doesn't this seem dishonest and immoral? I mean there's sustained content Groundspeak provides too, which I believe involves some events and that sort of thing, but the vast majority of users are paying just to access the caches. I'm not counting app updates or the additional paid features such as lists or GPS downloads because updates are expected out of every app and the features are static. And on top of all this, those who purchased the original paid app have to repurchase access - now continuously, instead of the original one-time payment. The move to a subscription model has really altered my view of the sport of geocaching. What I once thought of as a grass roots community of hiding secret treasures is now just another niche exploited by big business greed. While the app is great functionally, it presents too severe of segmentation between free users and paid users. If the subscription price was lower and included more content actually from Groundspeak, such as merchandise or, heck, geocaching containers, I would probably consider making the payments. But $30 a year is too much for me to spend to access mostly peer-created content on mobile, especially when the geocaching website is free and at least one other free geocaching website exists. An analogy of this business model could be YouTube suddenly charging a subscription to watch videos with a duration over a minute.

I understand the need for more money to pay a developer to refresh and update an app. I would gladly pay another $10 for a new and improved version but the subscription price is just too high for the amount of geocaching we do. Reviewed on 12/24/17 8:05 PMLet’s be honest, the only thing the app developers have to do is make a functional, intuitive app that stores and interacts with users’ data. Since the the app authors don’t regularly create any content, there’s no justification for recurring charges that a one-time charge wouldn’t cover. While the interface works well enough, the app is a serious battery killer. This alone makes the experience a bit miserable. I can go from 100% charge to absolutely drained in about an hour. This absolutely MUST be fixed before I’d even consider paying anything further. $6/mo or $30/yr just isn’t reasonable for an app that’s used only now and then. That kind of pricing demands a considerable amount more content and functionality than what we’re getting. But geocaching doesn’t need anything more than what we already had so there’s no need for such a relatively high subscription price. Please go back to a one-time fee or you’re going to lose a good percentage of the community.

Maybe that note will be the new Traveler to get the word out. This used to be a fun sport and I'm sure the developer made a nice living selling the app., then clearly greed has taken over. I refuse to build his empire for free if he is locking everything down to a RIDICULOUSLY high monthly subscription fee. $10/yr might have been OK, but barely. Want to now run a completely for profit subscription business? Then PAY those of us who took the time to build and hide the caches in the first place. Reviewed on 11/25/17 2:23 PMWhile this app has an updated UI, I was saddened to see that they’ve now restricted all but the most entry level caches to those who pay for premium membership. We were quite active in the early days of geocaching, forming our own club and putting out a ton of local caches for people to find. We paid a pretty penny for all kinds of gear from Groundspeak. Then when they put out an iPhone app, we paid the $10 to support that too, to have something on hand to cache with newbies. Haven’t gone out in awhile, but took my brothers family out only to feel like we just got ripped off again by a money-grubbing company that we have put so much into. No thanks! We’ll go where the original spirit still lives on - we’ll try a few we’ve seen reviewed (Cachly seems like it has good reviews), just tired of being taken by the same people and are going to put a stop to it.

That’s rotten… They should have ported over their old database for those that bought the other app. I only use it once every 6 months anyway … and today when I wanted to use it I found out that it’s been 12 months since I used it last. … That being said, they did a good job with the user interface of this app; but I’m still frustrated that they are ripping off so many people with something that is free for just using the browser with, the only difference being you need to copy the coordinates to put into a separate app to get where you want to go.

I’ve posted in other places that I would probably do an in-app purchase to unlock all non-premium caches, but I’m NOT interested in paying $30 a year for a membership I would use maybe 10-15 times. I geocache when I’m on vacation and in new areas, otherwise, not something I do. So for their to only be one paid option seems like a huge miss by groundspeak. But I think groundspeak must find joy in their ability to ruin their own game. Time and time again they’ve done things that just leave their users scratching their heads, this app being one of them. Reviewed on 10/9/18 3:43 AMThis app is amazing and did use it all the time! But there are a few things I think you should look into. Firstly, there is no way to edit a geocache desciption or add images one it has been created. This is a problem for me because there are certain things I hadn't mapped out about my cache that I really needed to add, and no matter what I did, nothing. Second, the fact that I have to may a 𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑡ℎ𝑙𝑦 fee is terrible. I wouldn't make my consumers pay 𝑎𝑛𝑦𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 to get access to all the geocaches on a 𝑔𝑒𝑜𝑐𝑎𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 app, no less, but if you're gonna make a payment, at least make it a one-time thing. This way more people will want to get the membership- because it's simpler, but also you will get more money this way. Everything is just less complex. The last thing isn't so bad, although sometimes it is a problem for me, not being able to "tag" someone else who helped you with the geocache. I think you should be able to link them as well. So to recap, editing a cache, the subscription payment, and others. Please fix these and this could be a 5-star rating. But other than that, this app is great!

Reviewed on 10/31/17 11:56 AMI have been a premium member for years now and find the app limiting. On more than one occasion it has not kept me logged in. Not a big deal, just a frustration for me, as I tend to have complex passwords. The past week I went out to perform some maintenance on one of my caches and found that I could not log an owner maintenance visit. Seems that you have to use the web site for that action.\\ One part that I find very frustrating with the app is it acting like I do not know anything about geocaching and displaying "got it" messages. Perhaps this happens when the app is upgraded and it must have a indication of if it has displayed a "useful tip" to the user. How about an option to not display theses tips. I think that would be a better approach. Another frustraton is the silly screen that appears when you near a cache that you are navigating to. Just a beep or a vibrate would be enough for me. I do not need to dismiss a message. I also do not like the fact that my caches that are higher difficulty/terrain are now behind a pay wall if the user is using the app and not a standard hand held gps unit. At least with the web site and a loc file, users can find these caches if they wish. Seems like a money grab to me. Update: I feel as a result of the paywall introduced by groundspeak, the find rate of my caches has fallen off, and I have gradually been removing them from the field. As I have no intreat in dumb dime-a-dozen, me too, caches, I am not planning on continuing as a premium member or paying the troll to find the scraps of bait left by greedy dirt bags sitting in their office. Later, groundspeak.

Would like to see an easier way to view associated pictures from the gallery. One bigger issue is that when caches are newly posted they are not showing up on this app for a while. Even with refreshing the app newly published caches do not show up. This is annoying as people with other apps do see these newly posted caches and people with this app do not. So when you are at an event and caches are published there and then you cannot join the game because your app does not work for this. Adding to previous reviews: 3/19/2017: 1) newly published caches do not show up for a while 2) the compass does not update distance and this appears to be a glitch. Adding to my previous review which was still neutral. After using this app for two full days finding roughly 30 caches I find the app does the following: 1. Drains batteries. After 3 hours it's time to plug in the emergency power. 2. Uses more data. In two days i used 60MB as compared to the old app where I used 150MB in 12 days of geocaching. The amount of time geocaching per day was about the same and the activity / number of finds per day similar. 3. The links to the geoChecker end up in a useless location. 4. I used the list of nearby caches frequently, the new app does not have this 5. Solved puzzles require a workaround by finding your final waypoint inside a menu. The map does not show where the solved puzzles are located. 6. How can I turnoff the jingle that says I am within 30ft of the cache? My previous rating was *** my new rating is a *. That jingle when you are approaching a cache is annoying. The messages on the screen when you DNF a cache or something else are nice for new cachers but if you know what you are doing they are not needed. Would like to see a menu to personalize (switch off/on) some functionalities. 7/16/16: would like to see disabled caches as well. How can we switch off or change it to something more discreet the jingle that goes of within 30'?

I miss it, but I’m not going to pay to see regular caches. It was fine when we just couldn’t see the premium caches that were considered different from the regular ones, but the fun has left the game. :(

Reviewed on 1/26/18 4:24 PMThis app used to be great. I loved geocaching with my husband and friends. Now everything in this app is locked behind a paywall. I’ll see a cache I want to try, but if the difficulty is over two, it’s invisible. If the creator marked it as premium only, it’s invisible. I can’t log caches, can’t find things, and can’t see anything without a premium membership. And I’m not willing to pay out the nose for something that is supposed to be a fun, free, community-based activity. It’s ridiculous. Don’t waste your time downloading this app. It’s just a desperate attempt for the creators to make a buck on something that shouldn’t cost money in the first place.
jef2424's Review of Geocaching
Reviewed on 1/25/18 6:06 PMFunctionally, this is a good app, however I’m rather disappointed that to make this app useful at all it requires you to upgrade to a premium geocaching.com membership. All of the geocaching apps seem to be this way on the iOS platform. I’ve been a geocaching member since 2004, and have really enjoyed the free and open nature of the sport and I’ve noticed over the years increasing pressure from GC to try to get people to pay for the premium memberships (e.g., premium member only geocaches) and this just seems like more of the same. Geocaching.com feels like it’s becoming more corporate and concerned about cash flow than maintaining a global, free, and accessible-to-everyone hobby that can be satisfied with their other, already large, cash streams. I’ll just switch back to the completely free android app that doesn’t make you upgrade to see all geocaches or go back to the way I started, with a good old gpsr. Thanks but no thanks.

Reviewed on 1/19/18 9:51 PMOk, geocaching is fun, and geocaching web & app facilitate the activity well. However, $30 per year is outrageous for what it does. In contrast, for $10 less per year, I subscribe to Gaia GPS, one of the world’s top pieces of navigational software, which I utilize extensively both on the job and recreating with complete landnav confidence. Used by search & rescue teams and the like, Gaia utilizes superb map overlays, route creation, integrated waypoint management, etc with pinpoint accuracy. Geocaching, for more $, links to Google Maps and provides fair locatonal services, at best? Face it guys, $30 a year to manage an app with an average UI is laughable... Reviewed on 1/19/18 12:09 PMWith this app, you will see on a map, the cache icons of all listed caches near your location, but unless you are a premium member of Geocaching.com, you can only access minor stuff, like park and grab. You can see the grayed out icons of the better ones, but not access them. The detailed description on the App store says as much, but in a round about way that is easy to miss. It's normal for free apps to restrict full access to the better features unless you pay, but this app charges a lot of money for only bare minimum access. I can't say for sure if this restriction was part of the deal when I paid $10 for the app several years ago, but if it was, I don't remember it. This week I used the app for the first time in quite awhile, and the restriction quickly became apparent. I believe they have purposely taken away a privilege that I paid for.
