Rick Hecht's Review of Avenza Maps
Reviewed on 7/22/18 9:03 PMThere are some great features of this app— but it is still limited by a frustrating process to find the maps you need. I have been using this app for a year for hiking, backpacking, and trail running. Here is my summary of pros and cons. Pros: — The app is free, and there is a large array of free maps available, including USGS Topo maps and local hiking maps. One of the best features is that users have made free pdf maps available that are geo-mapped so that the app locates exactly where you are. For example, in the East Bay Regional Park system near Berkeley/Oakland, you can get Tilden and Redwood park maps for free that work with the GPS function. I’ve found other maps like this in other parts of the country. — You can purchase high quality hiking maps like National Geographic hiking maps, without paying a monthly fee, like Giaia. —Once you have the right map, the app is pretty intuitive to use, if you are used to using other gps Topo maps apps like Giaia or Topo maps. —It does a nice job of shutting off the GPS function quickly when you are not viewing a map, limiting battery drain— a major issue when backpacking. Cons: — As some other reviews have noted, the search function is absolutely terrible. As the developers have noted, the on-line store is somewhat easier to search, but even this is challenging. The map store accessed via the app is virtually unusable. Even knowing the exact name of the map you are searching for will usually not find it via the App Store. Filters do not work properly. For example, I was just searching for Topo maps of the Ruby Mountains, in Nevada. Designating an area on the in store “map” to show where I want to search, if I set a filter for vendors to “Forest Service” I get nothing. But if I set this to “any vendor” and the map category to “topo” I get the Humboldt-Toiyabe Forest Service map— the one that doesn’t come up in the exact same map window set to “forest service” maps— but that does come up under “topo”— though this is not a topo map. If this were an exception, it might be mildly frustrating. But I’ve found this is the norm. Filters do not work as expected— and using the map to designate an area comes up with large numbers of maps that are very difficult to properly filter to come up with what you want. My main strategy is to use other sources of information to come up with the exact map you want, then search persistently with the name in Avenza to try to come up with the map. I really hope the developers will do something to fix this major shortcoming of the app. If they do, this could be a great app.

Reviewed on 7/12/18 10:28 PMDon’t bother with this app unless you plan to upload your own maps. If you do, the PDF tracking features are great, and transferring a GeoPDF from e-mail just works — no trouble, no fuss. Unfortunately, the built-in map store is all but unusable. I’m not exaggerating when I say that it has *the* worst search engine I’ve ever seen. It’s extremely inaccurate. It has no apparent way to refine search terms (except a few built-in options, which aren’t much use given the rest). It doesn’t recognize quotation marks. There’s no way to exclude terms. I literally cannot find specific US national forest maps by searching the name of the forest — most of the time, they simply aren’t in the results. It’s incredibly frustrating to have such a potentially awesome app made unusable by search alone. Please, devs, *fix* it!

I also had installed all of Jonathan Ley’s map sets for the CDT into Avenza. Yesterday I updated the app to the latest version. Now, over 300 of the imported maps are completely missing when I look for them in My Maps - a feature Avenza is claiming they just improved! Additionally, the Jonathan Ley map sets do not appear anywhere in my maps. However, if I go to Avenza store to reinstall them the app claims they are already installed. If that is the case, they are not accessible to me in My Maps. Now, I’m on the trail at a motel with bad wifi and spending hours reimporting maps and not getting critical rest that I need for my they hike. You can imagine how upsetting this is. To say the least. Previously I have recommended the Avenza app to several hikers. I do not recommend upgrading an app while on the trail EVER! If it works - do no change anything. As far as the Avenza developer goes... releasing a version without testing the stability of its features - and critically speaking, its ability to retain purchases and imported maps - this is flabbergasting. It’s unacceptable. I should have known better than to update to a new version and I take partial blame for my current situation. Avenza has wasted my my money - and more importantly, valuable time and rest while actively on the trail.

What I do find outrageous however, is that it cost $30 per year for me to load any more than 3 maps!! I think there should be a smaller tier, maybe $5.00 for loading a dozen maps. Given that we travel a lot of forest service roads, this app has been very helpful, but now I’m looking for an alternative. You priced us out of your app Avenza.

Searched for Tonto National Forest Map and what came up a disorganized list of maps that were impossible to view in any real detail using preview. Finally just used a map developers name, MONTANAGPS, and the map I was looking for came up. Nowhere in the search instructions is this option spelled out. You need to really do a lot of improving of the map store search function and come up with a way to preview the maps in greater detail so we can see what we are buying. Going to try GAIA. Read that it was way better.

This app is as worthless as teats on a boar. UPDATE: After a ton of back-and-forth with Support, I am now able to get Forest Service maps. Then the kicker: restore previous purchases requires me to be in his iTunes account. That is a marketing decision, and there are other factors that can be important to consider. Based on my experiences in interacting with their support team, I have found that Avenza has a solid support team and development team behind them. Case in point, iOS 11.3 came out and I discovered shortly after updating, that I could not create placemarks on a map. The app crashed when creating a placemark. This was a real issue for me, as I do this often when planning hikes for parking and such. I reached out to Avenza via their support site and was quickly informed that the the company was aware of the issue and working on a fix. And, they were. Within a day the update was available and the issue that I experienced has been corrected. To me this speaks a lot for a company in how they interact with their customers.

Used it on a Colorado elk hunt. A few times, it would not locate me on the map, which was frustrating, so giving it 4 stars instead of 5.

Reviewed on 10/17/17 6:10 PMThis app is the only one I’ve found where I can purchase the NY/NJ Trail Conference maps which give exactness as to our many interwoven trails in Harriman State Park, NY. Hit the location icon and I know exactly where I am. I use this app with Gaia GPS to record my track and elevation and time profile. Yes I’m paying extra and there’s some redundancy, but Gaia GPS doesn’t provide the exact trail map, and Avenza doesn’t record time and elevation profiles, etc. so I use both.

Then, we got notices all this work maybe for nothing as of September 15, and it was confusing, to say the least, to figure out what happened. Please work on the process annually to renew, and make it more seamless. I ended up deleting maps and then figured out the problem and then added my maps back in. It took hours.

bLynnb330's Review of Avenza Maps
Reviewed on 10/10/18 12:44 PMI use this app quite extensively and it’s wonderful! I have a few suggestions though. I saw a previous review that said the search engine on mobile devices is horrendous. I agree. I also saw Avenza’s response and they’re working on it. So I hope that’s fixed relatively soon. Another issue is that you don’t get notifications telling you when one of your maps has a newer version pushed by the creator. If that was implemented so you knew when to redownload the map to stay up to date, I would have no complaints!
Aberration32984712's Review of Avenza Maps
Reviewed on 10/1/18 5:51 PMI bought this program to make sure I stay on public land for hunting, which is a problem in my area. It does accomplish this, at a steep 4.99 for each unit I go to. And the definition of the maps are so poor I couldn’t actually use them to navigate. I saw Gaia mentioned in another review, for the cost of the unit maps I could have easily covered the premium yearly subscription and gotten far more value.

Otokoyama Denki's Review of Avenza Maps
Reviewed on 1/7/18 3:53 PMI’ve been using the app for approximately six months during a handful of off-road trips. It’s adequate when you acquire a map which is originally done in PDF (such as from Tom Harrison, National Geographic, and some others). Many of the maps, however, are in fact sourced from compressed scans of printed maps (or low quality renderings) that are virtually unusable when zoomed in to ascertain area details. The store does not indicate which are native PDF and which are scans. Many of the better available maps are available in hard copy for essentially the same price, though missing only the nice ability to use your device’s GPS to indicate and track your location. An issue of all mapping apps is that it’s sometimes nice to spread out a paper map to get the big picture as something is lost when you use an app such as this to zoom out making features so small that they’re unrecognizable and text unreadable. Overall, if you needs maps, you’re much better off getting the much more capable Gaia app and suffering the subscription fee which you’ll quickly rack up in a handful of maps with this app versus unlimited maps in Gaia. I think there’s a place for this app if you restrict yourself to Tom Harrison maps or are able to get lucky and find native PDF maps which are not available on Gaia, but all of the Nat Geo Trails illustrated and topographic maps are in Gaia ... and much easier to find and download.

For all you single track and trail riding motorcycle enthusiasts find your map by searching for either “MVUM” (multi vehicle use map) and/or “OHV” (off highway vehicle). No worries about cell service as this app utilized the GPS in your phone. I also love the ability to plot photos and mark my trails which makes it a joy to share later with friends. A feature I would like to see added would be the ability to share my recorded “track” via a simple text. The track would then be imported into other applicable maps and more importantly with friends who also have the app and corresponding map(s) so that they could follow the same track at a later date.
