In the world of woodland firefighting Avenza has been instrumental in how we map and transfer information between forces. A nice feature would be if you could pause and restart gps tracks. Other than that, it is a great map program. Works great for hunting too.

Have used your app to hunt in Montana, Colorado, Idaho and South Dakota. Love to see where I am and all the detail available. Will use this fall on another site in Montana to hunt birds and deer. Hunt with 2/3 other guys and we all use them. Wish you had system to follow them too as we hunt in a loose group and want to keep track of each other. Some difficulty with finding the maps. Need more practice but some times confusing if don,’t know exact name of area or there are numerous pins in same proximity. All that said, we are glad we found Avenza maps. Keep up the good work.

We’ve used this app many times to find maps of areas we are traveling to for camping and hiking. Several times we ended up with no reception and these maps helped us get back easily, even will show your location on the map if there is a brief signal. Only two wishes for improvements: when a map expires, have a link or suggestion for a replacement map. And better descriptions for why one map may be better than another-Yellowstone for example has so many available maps for free or to buy-but which is the location, level of detail, etc that you want?-can’t always tell by the descriptions.
jfaughnan's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 8/5/18 6:02 PM
I used this with Bikeverywhere’s $4 TC (MSP) map. One problem is layer management. Need UI to quickly hide all layers, add layers. Bikeveywhere’s annotations should have been implanted as a layer, but they are part of the map. I think they might have done this because Avenza’ Layer management is weak. It was an incredible pain in iOS to add the optional KMZ layers from Dropbox. Need a better solution. A bigger problem is how Avenza shares purchases. You need to be logged into a store account BEFORE buy a map. If you buy a map then login the store account is not updated with the purchased map.

I had downloaded the free map of this NY state park. This was my first time using this app and did not know what to expect. But the app was intuitive enough to use and I was soon tracking my hike. Seeing exactly where I was at any point in time gave me enough confidence of not getting lost that I hiked few extra trails marked in this map. Few times that I did get lost I could get back on trail looking at my tracks on the map. Overall a great first experience of using the app.
PeteSCU's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 8/23/18 9:18 AM
Avenza offers a wide variety of maps from National Geographic and other sources that can be downloaded to your device and used to track your hikes on the various trails. Because the map is on your device and not online you don’t need an internet connection while in the field. On the other hand it would be nice to be able to share maps with tracks between devices by being able to store maps with tracks on line in your Avenza account while connected to the internet.

I can across this app via a national park page for region maps. The app install went fine, easy to download the maps from the store THAT ARE AVAILABLE FROM THE iPhone, the QR code link from the National park page continually errored out. Couldn’t find the same map in the store from the device, signed in to the company site and had zero problem finding the map on the web site. Put it in the cart, checked out no problem. Get the confirmation email with instructions to go to the app and follow directions, except those directions don’t work. Back to the web page, on my downloaded map area there is a link to open the map in the app, that gave a QR code that actually worked. Suggestions, have your website inventory and device inventory match. Skip sending an email with directions that don’t work, instead send one with a QR code or link. I’m kind of dreading trying to use this app considering the customer experience thus far.

Original review: Features have been removed from the free version: only three of your own maps can be loaded without paying for a subscription -- not a one time purchase, a SUBSCRIPTION to use your OWN maps! Avoid! Developer response: "Thank you for your feedback. You can remove and import as many of your own maps as you like, but only three of your own maps can reside on your device at one time. Please note there are is no limit on maps downloaded from the in-app map store, many of which are free." My response to developer: I already paid Apple for my device’s storage. I can store as many maps on my device as I have room. I can only have three maps copied into Avenza Maps at one time. If I want more, I need to waste time deleting and loading different ones into the app. Please stop trying to charge me a subscription to storage space I already own.

Rick Hecht's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 7/22/18 9:03 PM
There are some great features of this app— but it is still limited by a frustrating process to find the maps you need. I have been using this app for a year for hiking, backpacking, and trail running. Here is my summary of pros and cons. Pros: — The app is free, and there is a large array of free maps available, including USGS Topo maps and local hiking maps. One of the best features is that users have made free pdf maps available that are geo-mapped so that the app locates exactly where you are. For example, in the East Bay Regional Park system near Berkeley/Oakland, you can get Tilden and Redwood park maps for free that work with the GPS function. I’ve found other maps like this in other parts of the country. — You can purchase high quality hiking maps like National Geographic hiking maps, without paying a monthly fee, like Giaia. —Once you have the right map, the app is pretty intuitive to use, if you are used to using other gps Topo maps apps like Giaia or Topo maps. —It does a nice job of shutting off the GPS function quickly when you are not viewing a map, limiting battery drain— a major issue when backpacking. Cons: — As some other reviews have noted, the search function is absolutely terrible. As the developers have noted, the on-line store is somewhat easier to search, but even this is challenging. The map store accessed via the app is virtually unusable. Even knowing the exact name of the map you are searching for will usually not find it via the App Store. Filters do not work properly. For example, I was just searching for Topo maps of the Ruby Mountains, in Nevada. Designating an area on the in store “map” to show where I want to search, if I set a filter for vendors to “Forest Service” I get nothing. But if I set this to “any vendor” and the map category to “topo” I get the Humboldt-Toiyabe Forest Service map— the one that doesn’t come up in the exact same map window set to “forest service” maps— but that does come up under “topo”— though this is not a topo map. If this were an exception, it might be mildly frustrating. But I’ve found this is the norm. Filters do not work as expected— and using the map to designate an area comes up with large numbers of maps that are very difficult to properly filter to come up with what you want. My main strategy is to use other sources of information to come up with the exact map you want, then search persistently with the name in Avenza to try to come up with the map. I really hope the developers will do something to fix this major shortcoming of the app. If they do, this could be a great app.

I have only just started using this app, but so far I love it. I downloaded a forest service interactive map to use in the mountains when we had no service. We tried it out today and it worked great! Now I need to explore it all more so that I know how to use all of the features.

Photosynthetic's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 7/12/18 10:28 PM
Don’t bother with this app unless you plan to upload your own maps. If you do, the PDF tracking features are great, and transferring a GeoPDF from e-mail just works — no trouble, no fuss. Unfortunately, the built-in map store is all but unusable. I’m not exaggerating when I say that it has *the* worst search engine I’ve ever seen. It’s extremely inaccurate. It has no apparent way to refine search terms (except a few built-in options, which aren’t much use given the rest). It doesn’t recognize quotation marks. There’s no way to exclude terms. I literally cannot find specific US national forest maps by searching the name of the forest — most of the time, they simply aren’t in the results. It’s incredibly frustrating to have such a potentially awesome app made unusable by search alone. Please, devs, *fix* it!

You’re limited to three maps where the GPS positioning works. You want more than that? $30/year, thank you. But what should one expect from the quasi-official US Government Suggested App for GeoPDFs than an attempt to take poop-tons of money from you?
Fourleggedfish's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 6/5/18 5:56 PM
Have used and loved this app for years. I am not surprised nor upset that they have started charging for side-loading maps, as they earn no money when people do so. What I do find outrageous however, is that it cost $30 per year for me to load any more than 3 maps!! I think there should be a smaller tier, maybe $5.00 for loading a dozen maps. Given that we travel a lot of forest service roads, this app has been very helpful, but now I’m looking for an alternative. You priced us out of your app Avenza.

I’m currently hiking the Continental Divide Trail and had downloaded 423 individual geo codes PDFs from the CDTC into Avenza and they were all working fine. I also had installed all of Jonathan Ley’s map sets for the CDT into Avenza. Yesterday I updated the app to the latest version. Now, over 300 of the imported maps are completely missing when I look for them in My Maps - a feature Avenza is claiming they just improved! Additionally, the Jonathan Ley map sets do not appear anywhere in my maps. However, if I go to Avenza store to reinstall them the app claims they are already installed. If that is the case, they are not accessible to me in My Maps. Now, I’m on the trail at a motel with bad wifi and spending hours reimporting maps and not getting critical rest that I need for my they hike. You can imagine how upsetting this is. To say the least. Previously I have recommended the Avenza app to several hikers. I do not recommend upgrading an app while on the trail EVER! If it works - do no change anything. As far as the Avenza developer goes... releasing a version without testing the stability of its features - and critically speaking, its ability to retain purchases and imported maps - this is flabbergasting. It’s unacceptable. I should have known better than to update to a new version and I take partial blame for my current situation. Avenza has wasted my my money - and more importantly, valuable time and rest while actively on the trail.

You priced us out of your app Avenza.

new bummed user's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 5/22/18 1:35 AM
This app is good to use IF YOU CAN FIND the maps you want in their map store. Searched for Tonto National Forest Map and what came up a disorganized list of maps that were impossible to view in any real detail using preview. Finally just used a map developers name, MONTANAGPS, and the map I was looking for came up. Nowhere in the search instructions is this option spelled out. You need to really do a lot of improving of the map store search function and come up with a way to preview the maps in greater detail so we can see what we are buying. Going to try GAIA. Read that it was way better.

Mr. Firewall's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 5/20/18 3:50 PM
The US Forest Service publishes QR codes to allow forest users to quickly find & download their Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) into Avenza. Not only is it not possible to import them into Avenza any more, but Avenza doesn’t even have an option anymore to use a QR code to fetch a map. And trying to use a URL produces a protocol error. This app is as worthless as teats on a boar. UPDATE: After a ton of back-and-forth with Support, I am now able to get Forest Service maps. Most of the problem is with the Forest Circus (why am I NOT surprised?) but a fair amount of blame lies with Avenza’s poor UI design, useless error messages, and byzantine documentation. Upgrading to 2 stars and “useless without help from Support.”

These maps are some of the best hunting tools I have ever used. Easy to use, even in a pinch. I normally use my vehicle GPS to get into a location, then transfer to my handheld while on the trail.
Rockietopman's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 5/19/18 11:33 PM
The app is free. But maps available for download are copies paper maps. Some how they have them tied to GPS. But for an area you have to download several maps. In my example. The Rampart area is the same map with different resolutions. But only contains about half the area. The Rampart range goes way south of what is in the included maps. $11.95 of useless map. Maps range 80+mb X3. Not ready for primetime if you ask me.

My husband purchased a map of the Sierra National Forest on our iPad. It supposedly could be accessed on multiple devices. He logs in to his Avenza account on his iPhone and there’s no map in his download history. He says to restore previous purchases and nothing happens. I try the same route. No previous downloads. Then the kicker: restore previous purchases requires me to be in his iTunes account. So even if there was a previous purchase to restore (which there wasn’t in his iTunes account on his iPhone), I wouldn’t be able to access it. The app doesn’t work as advertised.

I may have some issues with how Avenza handled the custom maps transition with limiting how many you could have without a pricy subscription. That is a marketing decision, and there are other factors that can be important to consider. Based on my experiences in interacting with their support team, I have found that Avenza has a solid support team and development team behind them. Case in point, iOS 11.3 came out and I discovered shortly after updating, that I could not create placemarks on a map. The app crashed when creating a placemark. This was a real issue for me, as I do this often when planning hikes for parking and such. I reached out to Avenza via their support site and was quickly informed that the the company was aware of the issue and working on a fix. And, they were. Within a day the update was available and the issue that I experienced has been corrected. To me this speaks a lot for a company in how they interact with their customers.

I spend a lot of time on National Forest lands, so this app is extremely useful with the PDFs provided as well as georeferenced maps imported via ArcGIS. I was also very impressed with how quickly the developer responded to crash issues brought about by the newest IOS update (11.3): they basically had it debugged in a day. Keep up the great work!

I have to search for maps through the website because it is near to impossible to find what I want through the app. However, I love the capabilities of this little thing. Being able to place mark and open up points within google map (or vice versa). Also I LOVE the fact that it operates like a GPS when in the map area. You can follow your little blue dot while traveling through the forest. And it’s scary accurate. Loving this so far! Can’t wait to place mark all the beautiful spots in AZ that I explore.

Planning a 4 day dirt road adventure in the Sierra Mountains National Forest. I first made routes, to be used off line, with apps like REVER and RIDEwithGPS, which all use Google based maps. I thought I’d done a great job, until I cross referenced my routes on Avenza, which uses a jpeg of the particular map you download, in my case a Nat. Forest map. I realized my route went through many closed trail gates!, so it was worthless. I created a a new route on Avenza avoiding closed gates. This app is essential for back country exploration.

I haven’t updated my phone or apps for a long time as I really didnt have a need. Recently my phone broke so I updated to a phone that runs ios11. Many apps lost and many more updated including this app. I bought many geo maps through this program and all of them work great. But now this app wont let me import my own pdfs (non-geo) as it use to. I have to pay $25! Seriously? $25 for something that use to be free? $5 OK. $10 maybe. But $25? Ridiculous! I will see if i can delete this new version and copy over the older ipa that I have backed up for money grabs and customer screws like this. If not I will just export the pdfs to jpgs and look at them as photos or use google maps etc for the places they have been added to these services by caring users. To think I was still recommending this app to fellow hikers without knowing the developers went for a despicable cash grab.

Great way to explore the forest and know if the trails you are on are legal. Needs to have a better way to locate the current MVUM (Motor Vehicle Use Map) for a given area but is way better than the paper map. Would also like the option to layer MVUM over a topo or have them tiled as a single layer.

A great app for hikers in which you permanently own the maps once you buy them but do not buy them through the apple store. Instead Buy them on the Avenza website just in case you do not find they were not what you expected or hoped for. The Apple Store will not refund your purchase but Avenza will. The only drawback to the Avenza app is that it does not automatically save your routes or waypoints. You must save/ export them as layers to your files then import them. Hopefully they will streamline that process in the future

Crosscut Mountain Center (x-c ski) near Bozeman MT says their map is on your site, so I installed the app on an iPad Mini 2 and also from Crosscut’s site it seemed to install Crosscut’s map too. Unfortunately, a search on your app puts me roughly 75-90 miles away, to the SE. I’ve since found it listed to the side, under My Maps, but it seems to open more as a preview with a bunch of squiggly colored lines (trails) than a useful map. Fortunately, I’m familiar with the trails, but someone new wouldn’t be able to make heads or tails of it.

More user-friendly than my Garmin 62st and a heck of a lot less expensive! Nice features. Would love to be able to share waypoints with other users. Used it on a Colorado elk hunt. A few times, it would not locate me on the map, which was frustrating, so giving it 4 stars instead of 5.

Overall very useful app. To improve, the AP needs add an export option for the created overlays.
Polish prince 420's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 10/26/18 11:36 AM
The Nat Geo maps are horrible. No detail and when you zoom in on the map you can’t even see where you are if it’s a short trail or an ascending trail. Wish I would have not wasted my $$$ on these. However the NJ/NY trail conference maps are amazingly accurate

I've been using it since 2014 and love it. I make all my own maps in GIS and it works perfectly all the time. I've even started using it for triangulating in telemetry. Being able to draw the bearing and distance is sweet. Great app!
TimberCruiser's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 10/23/17 11:43 PM
Love the app and find very useful as a hunter/outdoor recreationist. However, since you began restricting how many of my own PDF maps I can load at one time, the app is useless whenever I don't have cellular coverage which is just about always while in the field. Very disappointing.

A subscription fee to import your own maps. How s***** do you think people are?

This app is amazing!!! This app is a must have if you are a outdoors enthusiast. It works when your phone has no service! You will know exactly where you are and where you cannot go! Whoever invented this app is my hero! Go download the avenza app now and you will not be disappointed.

It is very convenient to be able to use Avenza to import existing maps like all of the USFS ranger district maps and various hunting zone maps. Simple to use and save changes

This app has helped me navigate new biking trails many times this summer. The accuracy is spot on. It is very battery friendly. It is easy to use and I don't have to belong to some club and share my workouts. Maps, plain and simple, with route saving options. Doesn't get any better.

No debate. There is no other mapping app that holds a candle. Leave your expensive GPS behind. All you need is this app and a phone!!!!
Taylor_Smurf's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 10/19/18 6:22 PM
I've used this app for many years now, mainly for hiking and biking. I mostly use this app offline and the maps are very detailed. Plus the majority of the maps are free. This is a great app to have as a backup. Just pay attention to the date of the maps, some are older and may show trails that have been closed or don't exist anymore.

This app is the only one I’ve found where I can purchase the NY/NJ Trail Conference maps which give exactness as to our many interwoven trails in Harriman State Park, NY. Hit the location icon and I know exactly where I am. I use this app with Gaia GPS to record my track and elevation and time profile. Yes I’m paying extra and there’s some redundancy, but Gaia GPS doesn’t provide the exact trail map, and Avenza doesn’t record time and elevation profiles, etc. so I use both.
Moosinator16's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 10/16/18 4:54 PM
This app is better than collector or other GIS based collection apps. The data management is smooth but has a slight learning curve, but that’s easy to look past. The best app around to collect solid data.

FIA-RMRS-crewlead's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 10/14/17 9:51 PM
I was really enjoying using this app, and put a lot of work into getting USFS supplied maps in your app for work purposes. Then, we got notices all this work maybe for nothing as of September 15, and it was confusing, to say the least, to figure out what happened. Please work on the process annually to renew, and make it more seamless. I ended up deleting maps and then figured out the problem and then added my maps back in. It took hours.
Pooneil8's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 10/14/17 1:46 AM
This is a great app for viewing home made pdf maps. Alas the non-subscription version is limited to three maps. There is no way to buy out of the limit. Only a subscription to the service where the maps are useless to me for outdoor use.

JTOgden's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 10/10/18 6:26 PM
New version removes the ability to import more than 2 maps not from the map store unless you pay $30+/year. That makes this app useless for me and many people I have recommended it too as we use it for the maps DNR has on its website for free. Sad used to love this app. Greed kills
bLynnb330's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 10/10/18 12:44 PM
I use this app quite extensively and it’s wonderful! I have a few suggestions though. I saw a previous review that said the search engine on mobile devices is horrendous. I agree. I also saw Avenza’s response and they’re working on it. So I hope that’s fixed relatively soon. Another issue is that you don’t get notifications telling you when one of your maps has a newer version pushed by the creator. If that was implemented so you knew when to redownload the map to stay up to date, I would have no complaints!
Aberration32984712's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 10/1/18 5:51 PM
I bought this program to make sure I stay on public land for hunting, which is a problem in my area. It does accomplish this, at a steep 4.99 for each unit I go to. And the definition of the maps are so poor I couldn’t actually use them to navigate. I saw Gaia mentioned in another review, for the cost of the unit maps I could have easily covered the premium yearly subscription and gotten far more value.
OldGert's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 1/8/18 9:51 PM
Really good app. Much Better than a clunky gps unit. Very easy to use. Needs improved single finger zoom in/out, like google map has.

We ride the trails in the Black Hills of South Dakota all year long. This app not only has the tails but shows your location while traveling. It also shows where you’ve been. Used it for other national areas like Havasu Az.
Otokoyama Denki's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 1/7/18 3:53 PM
I’ve been using the app for approximately six months during a handful of off-road trips. It’s adequate when you acquire a map which is originally done in PDF (such as from Tom Harrison, National Geographic, and some others). Many of the maps, however, are in fact sourced from compressed scans of printed maps (or low quality renderings) that are virtually unusable when zoomed in to ascertain area details. The store does not indicate which are native PDF and which are scans. Many of the better available maps are available in hard copy for essentially the same price, though missing only the nice ability to use your device’s GPS to indicate and track your location. An issue of all mapping apps is that it’s sometimes nice to spread out a paper map to get the big picture as something is lost when you use an app such as this to zoom out making features so small that they’re unrecognizable and text unreadable. Overall, if you needs maps, you’re much better off getting the much more capable Gaia app and suffering the subscription fee which you’ll quickly rack up in a handful of maps with this app versus unlimited maps in Gaia. I think there’s a place for this app if you restrict yourself to Tom Harrison maps or are able to get lucky and find native PDF maps which are not available on Gaia, but all of the Nat Geo Trails illustrated and topographic maps are in Gaia ... and much easier to find and download.

It’s about time something good was free. I wish The single page maps were a different color or I could narrow the type of map down even more. But it’s a great respect s when you find the map you need.
Droopy1993's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 1/28/18 1:17 PM
One the whole, I really like this app. We ride SxS’s whenever we get a chance. The interactive map is a big help. Only thing is that when searching for maps to download, sometimes you need to know the exact name of the map to find it in the store. Do your research on particular maps before searching and you’ll be fine.
Piperguy007's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 1/27/18 5:20 PM
Only complaint is that there aren’t enough proper maps out there to use with. I’ll keep working it though!

Love using the downloadable topographic maps for my backcountry adventures. I use the extra settings to pin my way in and out and it has helped a lot finding my way out again. Great maps also usable on airplane mode and it doesn’t drain your battery. Thanks so much for having these tools available!

A little hard to find the specific USFS MVUM your looking for because government bureaucracies have zero creativity when it comes to map titles, but if your accustomed to using MVUM’s - then Avenza is the source for these free maps. I used them for the first time last summer on a dirt bike trip to Idaho. The GPS tool worked on my IPhone 6 just fine and it was very accurate. I carry a GPS and Spot, as well. But, I always went to Avenza on my phone first. 1’ve only scratched the surface of available features, but I have a friend who laid out the Black Hills KTM rally using it and it was a great tool.

Overland man's Review of Avenza MapsReviewed on 1/10/19 12:53 PM
The application is really good, got exposed to it about five years ago when going to VT Overland festival. I found the application works well and all dependent quality of the map. If it is accurate geolocated then the application is accurate. The store search for new maps is lacking. If I get a new device and try to find old map it is a pain. Much less try to tell someone else to get a map.

I absolutely love this app. My family enjoys hiking, biking, and off highway motorcycle riding which is where this app excels. For all you single track and trail riding motorcycle enthusiasts find your map by searching for either “MVUM” (multi vehicle use map) and/or “OHV” (off highway vehicle). No worries about cell service as this app utilized the GPS in your phone. I also love the ability to plot photos and mark my trails which makes it a joy to share later with friends. A feature I would like to see added would be the ability to share my recorded “track” via a simple text. The track would then be imported into other applicable maps and more importantly with friends who also have the app and corresponding map(s) so that they could follow the same track at a later date.
