And they keep improving the app performance and keep expanding it. For real , if you wanna get into digital art and have an ipad pro, it is worth it , works perfectly with the apple pencil. Let me tell you: it’s a great app. It reminds me a lot of photoshop but is very much more intuitive than photoshop. It handles transparency well and lets you export things directly to your cloud in batches. It also has a time lapse feature if you like posting things on youtube. My biggest problem is that there is no cropping of canvas sizes but dude, this app is great. I love the brush selection and the fact you can download more. Make sure you look at a video tutorial on how to use though, there are some features on it it doesn’t clearly explain at first like the bucket tool. (Just drag your selected color to the painting to fill that spot)

Reviewed on 9/23/18 4:52 AMThis is my go-to app. I’ve used it constantly ever since 2014. It’s my absolute favorite and I’m so happy with the updates—it just keeps getting better and better. I use a 2017 12.9” iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. I also have Pocket Procreate on my 2017 iPhone X, and it’s equally comparable to the iPad version. I could go on and on about the UI and the fluidity and responsiveness and color space options and layer groups within groups and everything. I can’t express how awesome it is. I think I have only two major suggestions: the first being the ability to crop the canvas, and the second bringing back the ability to hold a color on a palette and physically “throw it away” by swiping it off the swatch. Also, it would be nice to use the reference layer without color “seeping” beneath the edge of the reference, if that makes sense, but that’s only a minor issue for me. Otherwise, I think this is the most amazing drawing app available, and a fierce competitor to other programs like Photoshop and Paint Tool Sai. Thanks developers!!!

To actually having a laso tool, and creating folders as well as your own canvas size. I also great enjoy the future of importing brushes people have made. I was able to get some good brushes to use. Overall 7 dollars for this app really grants a lot. I was also very surprised on how many layers I could open depending the size of that canvas. Overall it's really good. Edit: Okay with the brand new update, I absolutely love it. This app is honestly amazing, the only thing that bugs me or that could be improved is being able to pictures outside of the canvas. Meaning I would be able to bring in reference photos and place them outside of the canvas. That way my drawing won’t be interrupted. It only takes a few minutes of tinkering to more or less get the hang of the user interface and tools. Definitely worth a buy. But I do have one qualm with the design - in a recent update, the folders were changed to a mechanic called ‘stacks’, just showing the most recent image, which makes it impossible to see what’s inside a folder just by looking at it (i.e. not tapping on it) - not to mention it’s horribly displeasing to the eye, in my opinion.

Please, just do what MediBang does and put another little anchor above the selected area that you can touch and drag to rotate the object. Also, after transforming an object, please make it so it doesn’t ruin the selected areas pixel quality. And something I’m going to continue to ask for is clipping masks. This isn’t the same as layer masking and is an essential part of my work flow.

Unfortunately there's no current anti-aliasing option, which means I can't quite get the crisp black linework and texturing that I could in Manga Studio and Medibang Paint (and I loathe the subscription model Clip Studio has adopted). I don't mind the lack of a text tool—I've always lettered in a vector-based app and plan to keep doing so—but the slight fuzzy halo I get when fine linework is aliased is a huge downer. Everything else, though, is exceptional. If Procreate added anti-aliasing to its brush options, it'd be perfect in every way.

For instance, if the user draws something on layer two and tries to draw in the background in layer one— instead of being able to fully draw behind the layer two image, it effects it. Like putting a shadow over the layer two image; ruining the piece. But really other than that, I enjoy using this app.

They don’t have that effect when you press lightly or h****** the iPad and I think that is the whole point of the app. Please change that so that users using just their fingers can have the same experience as the ones who do have the pencil.

Reviewed on 8/2/18 10:18 PMI’d highly recommend this app for digital artists, recently I’ve started to get into digital painting, and this app is perfect for it! I’ve tried other apps like ibis and medibang, but they aren’t as efficient, and ibis is clearly not meant for it. The transition was easy, and I love being able to utilize the fact that this is an app and not a desktop download. At first I was hesitant because of it costing money, but I love this app, and it is so cheap for how amazing it is. My complaints? I don’t have any about current features, and the things I’m saying aren’t complaints, they’re just things that would be more convenient. This app doesn’t seem like it’s made for comic making, but it would be great if there was some tools for being able to make them. I’m able to, but I have to switch between ibis (has a text tool, I haven’t seen one on here yet) and Procreate so that I don’t have to be frustrated with my handwriting. It would also be nice to have “stroke outer” and “glow outer” filters, it would be more convenient for my stylized art, and some effects look better with “glow outer” and/or “glow inner” filters applied to them. But these are definitely not necessary features, they would just make things easier and take away the step of taking the file to ibis to apply said filters. Basically, I love this app, and I would recommend it to any digital artists on iOS.

I love how I able to edit my artwork as if they are photographs and having the options to share it with other editing programs. However, using the eye dropper tool is very odd and I think having to go back and forth on hitting the square tool between the brush adjustments prolongs the process of creating work. The eye dropper tool is an essential component to digital art especially when trying to recreate the same colors. I think, it would be easier if there was option added where we are able to use the eye dropper as we hold the pencil on the color with our stylus/Apple Pencil rather than going back and forth would be easier. Also, a swipe with t********** option to delete mistakes would be a great add as well since the undo/redo option are always used. Making it easier for artists allows it be user-friendly and brings in a whole to element to creating.

Second, will the Procreate team ever tackle animation? I know you all stated to me in my previous 4 star review that animation wasn’t even on the plan for this app and will most likely never be. I have several other art programs, but they just weren’t the same as my PSP. ProCreate is SO much like my PSP! Of course there are still quite a few differences, buts ok! I’m in love with ProCreate! The interface is beautiful, very user friendly! There are all these little gems to discover in it! I suggest watching YouTube tutorials to get the full effect of what this program can do. Learning tips will also help you along whenever you become confused or frustrated on how to use a particular tool. My only grievance is that I accidentally deleted a default brush folder name and I just can’t figure how to change it back 😳 I can change the names on folders I create, but not the program default one. Even though ProCreate is geared towards iPad Pro and MAC computers, it works quite well on my iPad Air 2. Oh yes, I love the humor of the developers! 😂

Reviewed on 7/23/18 5:29 PMWhat happen to my fav drawing app? In the beginning after watching a couple of review videos about Procreate, I decided to buy it. I enjoy drawing cartoons & Procreate gave me a chance to see if I could change from traditional art to digital. I was amazed. Many of my friends noticed how greatly my art improved so quickly in Procreate. Procreate worked like a dream. Most of the time I use a stylist, but if I half to, Procreate works so smoothly that I could even use my finger if I had too.(On a personal note Procreate worked so smoothly it made me wish the creators of this app would make a special effect app like this since I would like to venture into filmmaking. ) Only what the heck happened? This morning I open up Procreate & I had used it last night. Except now when I drew the lines didn’t appear. They wouldn’t appear until after I stop drawing! My art didn’t come out as nice as it once did. Now I half to eye ball it. Farther more when I draw a line, if I hold it to long it becomes straight. I had enjoyed that feature when I could see it, but it is a bit annoying when you don’t se it change into a straight line as you draw. I didn’t do anything different when I opened up the app. Please look into this. I hope these changes can be fixed. Thank you to who anybody who reads this & to who anybody does reads this, am I the only one having these problems with Procreate? I want to add I have been playing around with this new version of Procreate. I found brushes I can use the way I did before so I do not feel as lost as I did & I am really enjoying these new added effects. So please keep these changes. I can deal with it now. Please understand sometimes it takes awhile for me to accept change. Procreate is still one of my fav drawing apps.

The scale used to range from “1.1%” to “1.2”, “1.3”, and so on and so forth. Now the sizes jump from “1%” to “2%”, but you can still scroll on the slider for a minute before 1% changes to 2%, and 2% changes to 3%. However, I’ve noticed the size of the brush actually does change between these nominal scrolls.... ugh just frustrating to lose the decimal label and not actually lose the size of the brush fluctuating. So I created a whole piece but didn’t realize 2% wasn’t a constant 2% line. My line weights are all over the place -.- Hope we can get one or the other fixed! It has the ability to import brushes, work with layer masks, mimic the feel of painting, adjust color, apply Gaussian blur, make complex selections...the list goes on and on. I use it for nearly everything except for one thing - and that is text editing. Procreate needs a text editor. I find it frustrating to export/ import to add text. I would love to be able to add and take away a grid; I've used grids in layers that I then delete, but it's just not as convenient as a built-in grid would be. It would be nice to have larger areas to store custom colors, and to sync those colors across devices. I've tried a lot of drawing apps, but I've always come back to Procreate. Here's hoping that the developers keep up the good work!

This tool would also allows different brush size settings, allowing efficiency. Tools like the brush, water, marker, etc has a setting on a slider called color blending. The higher you had the slider, the more the colors would blend, lower less. Put blue on the page, take red and blend, it becomes purple. It would blend it very smoothly - no lines or anything. Transforming (selecting something and changing it) wouldn’t make the image blurry or not significantly at least like Procreate does. This probably bothers me the most, trying to move and resize things causes it to be a blurry mess. Forget about trying to transform a finished colored and shaded part. Contrast slider Features I like of Procreate Brush textures, some effects, video replay Putting down fingers snaps the s***** perfectly straight, put an extra finger down and it snaps by degrees like 45 degrees etc. Features that sound nice If video replay showed a circle of where the cursor was so you can follow the video easier. If you could download photoshop brushes and put them on Procreate easily. Photoshop brushes are much more abundant. Inserting text

This close to being a one tool solution. -Unless you need to do 4k work but I’m sure it will come soon as Apple iterates improvements on iPad screen resolution. Next project request! A brush with the streamline settings on it just feels unnatural to me, and its because of this that I use MediBang or Ibis paint X to substitute for this (to me) critical issue. In summary, if it’s not to much to ask, I would suggest adding a line correction tool into Procreate to ensure that you don’t drive away other customers with the same sort of problem as I. Reviewed on 7/11/18 5:39 AMSo the day has finally come where mobile has replaced my desktop for me. Procreate runs lightning fast. I’ve been using it for almost 5 years now. It’s never lagged in that time and some how runs even faster. It’s fast, always. They have the best User Manual I’ve ever seen for any product in my life. It’s very very user friendly, covers everything you need, and is just beautiful... which isn’t something I’ve ever said about a user manual before. Speaking of easy, making brushes is super easy as well. The tools work splendidly. They are easy to use, intuitive, and out of your way yet easily within reach. The UI is just amazing. It doesn’t get in the way, it looks nice. They even added a white mode so if you are outside in the sun you can cut down on the glare. The default mode though is a nice dark interface which is easy on your eyes. They have so many tools. Amazing blurs, smudge, adjustments, selection/transform, liquify, perspective guides, radial menus, bucket, quickline(straight lines), and more. Just lots that’s crammed into this program yet it’s not overwhelming like many programs. It’s more like magic. We all love magic, playing with magic and making things with magic. That’s basically the essence of procreate. Drawing in procreate is such a delight. I could easily see someone becoming a professional artist before they know it simply because they were having so much fun drawing. It’s addicting. Now there is one feature that is missing in procreate, one I’d like to see. The ability to change your canvas size via cropping with draggable nodes to increase/decrease your canvas size. That would be great (or an infinite canvas which is more like a dream rather than a complaint)

When using the Symmetry grid, the Quadrant and Radial options could be combined into a single option which would allow you to set the number of segments from 3 to ... whatever, say up to 8. In this case I’d not only have the option to have odd number of segments, but this could eliminate the current Quadrant option. In which case, if I were to set the number of segments to 4, that would be the same thing as using the current Quadrant option. And having user adjustable number of radial segments would be preferable since at the moment I can have only 8 segments (or 4 if I use the Quadrant option) which I find somewhat limited. After all, I might want to have 3, 5, 6 and 7 symmetry options, too. Otherwise it is great!

Reviewed on 7/11/18 1:11 PMTl;dr: Read the guidebook or watch a video on YouTube, you can memorize every feature of the program in a day or less, people! When we bash the devs—preferably never—let it be because they actually messed up or something genuinely needs improvement, not because we users lack reading comprehension. The title says it all. I’ve had Procreate for years, like back when it was new to the App Store and $5 years. Procreate has always been a great tool, I just grew less interested in digital art and ignored it until last year when I got an iPad Pro. I felt like a new user as so much had changed. I am not a techy person, and I’ve barely done any digital painting in other programs. I was able to figure out the ins and outs of Procreate with relative ease. I’ve handed my iPad over to people who have never done digital art. They figured it out. I’ve handed it to Photoshop aficionados, and they figured it out. Heck, I’ve handed it to my elementary schoolers, and they figured it out even faster! If you’re really too lazy to experiment with the app, the developers have been so kind as to leave us with a handbook that explains everything in great detail. Often features that I see half the users whining about are in fact available. Is the utilization as great as say Photoshop or SAI? That’s subjective. But yes, there is a blending tool. Yes, there’s a dropper. We have layer masks (albeit recently). Blah blah blah. If a feature is not here, it’s probably coming. Be patient or vote with your dollar elsewhere. If you hate reading, go to YouTube! It’s free, and there are tutorials by pros like Brad Colbow, Austin Batchelor, and K. Michael Russell that can make you a power user with little effort. I have seen everything from high-quality artwork for clients to prints and stickers for cons come from this app. It depends on the user’s needs. Personally, digital art is more of a hobby or a tool to teach with. Therefore, Procreate meets my needs and I find it intuitive and pleasant to use. It’s smoother than the other apps I’ve tried and never heats up my iPad. Timelapse is great. The blending is not ideal for my tastes, but it’ll do. Occasionally, I have to fight the freeform tool, but palette creation is simple. Procreate has its ups and downs like anything else. But, it is as nearly flawless as an art app can get and deserves kudos for that. Give it a try for yourselves, you'll probably enjoy it and create something wonderful in the process! Cheers!

Reviewed on 7/1/18 1:41 AMI love many, many things about Procreate. I love how simple the layout is at first; I love the time lapse feature A LOT. I love the concept of using my iPad Pro as a drawing device with this wonderful app. However, hidden behind the (for lack of a better word) excuse of simple design is a slight lack of intuition. For me there was a big learning curve when trying to use this app. It’s unclear to me still how to add layer effect like multiply, copy and paste from layer to layer, and rotate a selection. All simple commands that I can’t seem to figure out. Another minor complaint is that the standard brush options are limited at best and sparse at worst. For a ten dollar app (which is not much in the drawing world, but is a lot on the App Store), I would’ve expected more. That’s slightly made up for by the ability to create your own brushes and import others’, but who has time for that? It’s a pretty great app, but it does have some flaws that will hopefully be fixed in the near future.

Reviewed on 6/9/18 6:03 AMI love Procreate so much, having a iPad Pro with a Apple Pencil works so well with this app, the price is worth buying it. Tbh I stop using my laptop for drawing since the drawing and painting feels so natural and smooth though sometimes when I try to use the short cuts it won’t work other than that it’s works like a charm. There are some things that could be worked on, color picking a color from a reference or from the color wheel isn’t the exactly what it should look like while painting with it, it’s a little bit off, though It’s not noticeable at first (it’s not a big problem at all it just something I’ve noticed while using Procreate over the years) and now the blending tool, the blending tool can be really good but sometimes the blending tool can be frustrating to work with and sometimes while blending it makes the color muddy or won’t give a nice type a texture, I know sometimes it can be what brush you use for the blending tool. It would be nice to get a better version of it, also it might be a bug or something but when I leave a painting and go back I lose some of the progress of the painting and I haft to redo what I’ve already done. Other than those small details this is the best app for everyone it’s easy to use, you can create masterpieces with it, I wouldn’t go to another drawing app, I would say THIS is a app that you should try out. Reviewed on 6/6/18 5:36 PMPlenty to love with procreate, but most of all is the ease of use and over all thoughtful design. Some apps have more features, but not many strike the same balance of ease of use and functionality. I think my only real issue with procreate is the limit to layer count. I know part of this is because the number of undos, s***** recording etc. but it would be helpful if we could have an option in the settings to limit undos to gain more layers. That or be able to take combined layers and compact them into a cached layer which is actually a separate file that could be edited on its own. This would mean that they’d only be 1 layer when embedded in a document. Not sure how such functionality could be added and be user friendly but I have faith that the procreate devs can figure out a way. The help PDF files should just be included with the apps help. There is a lot to procreate that people assume isn’t there including those files in the app might help.

Reviewed on 6/30/18 10:28 PM2-3 years ago I purchased this software to use professionally with my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. It has become my go-to tool for conceptualizing. The learning curve was pretty steep and I still don’t have a grasp on a few things, primarily because I don’t have need of them and don’t use them. There have always been a few minor glitches, but no deal-breakers. That has changed. Procreate has now become, literally, unusable. My last few attempts to use it have resulted in program freezes after a couple minutes, and often, complete lockup’s of my tablet. Professionally, this is more than just an inconvenience. It’s a disaster - as a lot of stored work is now inaccessible or lost. Sadly, I am now forced to move to other software. IMO these devs have, like so many others, become victims to the feeling that only major new tricks and features will keep their brand at the top. Instead of just honing the good features they already have, they attempt to make their software serve every function and every user, which on a limited platform like a tablet, with it’s constantly updating OS, almost guarantees eventual failure. They lose sight of the fact that software like this can eventually have so many features that it becomes intimidating and impossible to learn and remember all of them unless you use them all on a regular basis. Along with this, usually comes bloat and glitches. My software is dead in the water as we speak. Annoying for casual users. Unacceptable for professional users. Can’t recommend it at present. UPDATE: Problem resolved I was able to resolve my issue by deleting other lesser-used apps. It appears that the freeing up of additional memory did it, but I can’t be absolutely sure. With 128 GB of ram on my iPad Pro (ver. 11.4), and probably more than half the ram still available, I would not have considered this to be an issue. Deleting a few apps was no big deal, as this tablet is primarily used for pro art purposes. Bottom line - it worked. Now, if the devs would just give me a few basic geometric shapes to work with.

Reviewed on 6/29/18 6:52 PMProcreate is absolutely the best professional illustration suite out there, for me at least. I’ve definitely used many, but as a professional illustrator there is nothing that comes close. That said, there hasn’t been an update in months and the last update brought with it some real dependability issues. This has been the case on the last three iOS builds, so I don’t think the culprit lies in iOS. Since the last Procreate update palm rejection, which Procreate was ahead of its time at, is not nearly as functional. I find myself having to try 5-6 times to pinch to zoom in and out. Multitouch in general is just not as functional. Procreate is reacting more slowly and it just leads to fistfuls of first world problems that really hinder my work day. Again, still the best illustration program out there for me, just please update and fix these issues. I have tried a clean install of both iOS and Procreate and these issues persist, so I’m 99% the problem lies in Procreate. iPad Pro 2 - 12.9 in.

Reviewed on 6/24/18 3:34 PMThis is my go-to drawing app on the iPad with the Apple Pencil. Still learning the various ins and outs but this app definitely serves it’s purpose. However, I have noticed a few glitches that are annoying, chief among these glitches is this strange phenomenon when I rest my drawing hand on the screen to draw, the app mistakes my hand for a command. Sometimes it undoes my last stroke. Sometimes it resets the screen and zooms out the canvas. This is most frustrating especially when engrossed in artwork. This app is advertised as being able to rest your hand on the screen without interfering with the program- so why is it getting quirky? Most annoying, but it will hardly stop me from using it. Suggestions: Dear Dev Team, 1.) Please give this app a freaking text/font tool... don’t know why you didn’t put one in the first place... text tool is kind of standard issue these days. 2.) please give the pallet a ‘clear’ paint/color option. Why? So we can do ‘clear area fills I.e. area erase 3.) Please give us a ‘smart eraser’ option where you can tell the erase tool what color to erase only. 4.) can you modify the options menu/selectors to allow us to turn off screen swipe commands... unless you can fix the hand-rest-on-screen-prompting commands glitch. If it is there already, I cannot find it.. Thanks

The app is not cheap, but for everything that it does, it continues to amaze me. The app is also wonderful to share with my children. Although of course the Apple Pencil is expensive, so you must be careful about that. The app is perhaps a little too complicated for young children.

Reviewed on 6/1/18 4:47 PMThis application is truly wonderful. It has fixed just about every issue that I have noted and noticed and it seems to have recently been just about the only drawing software I use. However, I believe that more features need to be expanded upon for professionals and less for “Finger painters” not that I have any personal issue with them I just know that this app could be truly amazing if it just pushed it further in the direction of customizability rather than making things too simplified. I do enjoy the simplification as well. As a matter of fact, I believe adding the option of a paint bucket tool would legitimately simplify the nuisance of having to constantly go back and forth with the tool that is currently built in as the paint bucket tool. All in all, this application is fantastic and any artist that wants to take a c**** into becoming a professional should absolutely use this yet, like every single software, has its flaws but unlike other software developers, Procreate constantly pushes how useful and great it can be.

Reviewed on 6/1/18 2:41 PM2-3 years ago I purchased this software to use professionally with my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil.

EDIT: The developer’s response translated: “We are going to continue to be ‘entertaining’ with our app updates, i.e. continue to keep the preteen g****** staff who writes the awful atempts at humor, and if you don’t like it, we don’t care. You can call us if you’re confused about the updates because reading is hard.” Because I’m sure that’s what it is...your updates are just so confusing to figure out, that your customers are going to need to call you. Maybe it’s what I actually wrote about, which is that when I look for the update, it’s unecessary for you to write like a teeny bop numbskull. Just listing the info is good. Filling your update messages with your ‘entertaining’ responses is unecessary, and all it does is take the consumer more time to figure out what you fixed. Why? Because you think update message ‘entertainment’ and your sad attempt at humor (which makes people cringe) is more important to you than your customer’s time. Your ridiculously condescending response and your inability to understand what I wrote makes me want to delete your app and use a competitor.

Reviewed on 5/31/18 8:43 AMProcreate is such a great app and runs so smoothly. I love it and it’s a great purchase. The reason I only gave it four stars is that I feel like it’s missing some essential functions that many art programs I use. One of them is being able to edit the canvas size after you’ve made it. Sometimes my composition ends up looking different than originally planned so I want to extend the canvas or crop it and I feel like this is something pretty essential that Procreate is missing out on. Others being clipping layers, being able to rotate a selection without slightly altering the size (thereby also changing the resolution of the selection). It’s small things that I think Procreate could use that would make the app 5 stars. Overall, amazing and it’s my main illustration app on the iPad.
Foot McDangle's Review of Procreate
Reviewed on 5/31/18 6:28 AMLet me start this review out by saying that Procreate is the only app I will ever use for serious work. It's built upon a very speedy brush engine, and with the Pencil and iPad Pro 2017, it's unmatched in terms of responsiveness. The workflow is just lightning fast! With other apps you're sort hobbling around submenus to get to features that you want to use. With Procreate however, it's simply miles ahead. The QuickMenu is a game-changer for me. I'm able to work much quicker than I would be using a standard Cintiq and Photoshop. Meaning I'm able to focus on what I want to do, which is paint. With this said though, there are some small improvements/additions that could be made: 1. Rotating a selection is nearly impossible without also resizing. I'd love to just place my finger on the selection, and rotate around that pivot point using the pencil. Scale locking would suffice, too. 2. Perspective Tool angle snapping. The Perspective Tool is very easy to use and understand, but trying to get a perfectly horizontal horizon line with 2 points is pure agony. With 3 points, forget it. There should be a setting somewhere to enable angle snapping. 3. The Color Picker auto-hides. I'm not a psychic, so I don't always know what hue or value I want to use next. I wish there was a toggle switch that would allow me to keep it open and experiment! 4. Clipping Layers. This one is big. At the moment I rely on Alpha Locking the layer I want to add to, and duplicating it to make additions. It's unnecessarily destructive, and causes a bit too much clutter in the layer menu. Clipping Layers would make all of that go away. 5. QuickShapes when? I've been using the workarounds for quite sometime now because I prefer the experience Procreate offers, but I think it's about time to give us a way to intuitively create shapes. If they could somehow also snap themselves according to Perspective Assist, that would be a huge game-changer. 6. Warp Transform Tool. Yes, I know it's a nicety that doesn't necessarily pertain to great digital paintings, but it certainly helps "nudge" them along, if you catch my drift. Such a tool is invaluable in making slight compositional and anatomical adjustments quickly without cannibalizing your work. These issues aside, Procreate is well beyond worth the ticket price. Crossing my fingers for a summer update 🤞

Reviewed on 5/25/18 6:44 AMThis app has the best combination of robust features and ease of use out of dozens of drawing apps I've tried. The brushes are easy to customize and have great variation. Transferring docs to Photoshop is a breeze. All the tools and effects are thorough and well done. The interface is sleek but poorly documented, and I only found out most solutions through forum posts after Googling them as there's no Help documentation. As there's a lot of swiping, tapping, and dragging to reveal tools, this is really, really inconvenient. Even the Fill tool is unique (and cool!), but good luck finding it without a walkthrough. The MAIN ISSUE is that there are some features missing that most other drawing and graphics apps have, that make it incredibly frustrating at times and force me to still have to rely on other apps. *There's NO clipping layer option and you CAN'T crop/resize canvases after creation.* Having to shade without clipping makes me feel like I'm 13 and using MS Paint, but even that lets you change canvas sizes. These are options on almost every drawing app I've used (even back on my iPhone 4) for years now. There's also no text tool and you can't draw shapes, which is definitely a handicap compared to other apps, but not treasonous considering its focus as a painting app. Still, I'd love to rely solely on Procreate for what are usually relatively default features. All in all, my favorite drawing app, but not complete enough to be my only one.

Reviewed on 5/25/18 4:06 PMI am an industrial designer and I use Procreate everyday on my iPad Pro 12.9 to do concept work. Previously I had been using a cintiq 27hd with sketchbook and the adobe suite so that is what I have been making the comparison to. Everything about this program is perfect, the workflow blows any adobe or autodesk program out of the water. The brushes and textures are great, very few of them need adjusting at all. There is a perspective tool and many different layer settings similar to photoshop. The first most frustrating thing to find out after using Procreate is that THERE ARE NO ELLIPSE, CIRCLE OR SHAPE TOOLS! Yes. I have done my research and looked at the options of building a new brush, importing a circle shape and everything else. But coming from an industrial designer doing very line work heavy concept art I have to say it is imperative to be able to trace your own ellipse. Giving it your own selected line weight with a stroke. This ellipse tool, which works great in sketchbook, would be similar to the current perspective tool in Procreate. Of course I can go on a forum and say “don’t be silly! You can just import a strait line and make a brush for that to make nice strait perspective.” Clearly this is not the same as throwing your own lines and making your own hand drawn line weights. The second is a mirror tool. Sketchbook has a great mirror tool. And again I understand that I can draw one side of whatever I’m making and then copy and mirror the layer. This is not the same. As a designer it is very important see real-time mirroring when creating something symmetrical. Many times something looks good when it is half but not when both sides are combined. As a professional designer I spend a lot of money on programs like the adobe suite and cad among others. I would be willing to pay another $50 just to get these last few features. And I know I am not the only one. Maybe autodesk has patented these tools and that is why Procreate is unable to do something similar. I don’t know. Being in product development myself I see a huge market that has been missed by not having these tools. By adding things like this, designers will stop using their cintiqs completely and will buy the professional version of your app. Which could cost much more and no professional would have a problem buying.

However, there are some things that, if done, would make it even better: - The cut and adjustment tool. When I’m inking, for example, every time I need to adjust the size of something, even if it’s just by a few pixels, the part I selected because fuzzy, and doesn’t look as sharp as the rest of the drawing. I end up having to retrace over the new size in order to fix it. Maybe this isn’t the most horrible problem, but it is inconvenient and somewhat annoying. - A paint bucket tool. One of the most basic digital art tools ever. There is none. Why not? Is there a paint bucket tool and I just don’t know where it is? What is this? Why is there no paint bucket?? Other apps have done it, so why not this one??? Maybe there is a paint bucket tool and I just haven’t found it, but if there is, can I please get a guide or something? Speaking of which... - A help guide maybe? A lot of the options within the brushes don’t make a lick of sense, and it takes a lot of experimentation to even remotely figure them out. I know there is a help button, but maybe just have a separate help guide so newbies don’t get completely lost. But, aside from those three things, the app is great!

I start with a 3D model in Blender, render a basic image to get geometry portrayed accurately, then use Procreate to paint over it and play around with textures, lighting, etc. I’m no pro, but I’m practicing and it’s fun, that’s all that counts, right? one suggestion though. I have a Pencil by 53 and use it in this and other apps. it’s not officially supported by Procreate, but I still use it (much better than just a finger and handles better than a $5 stylus). my suggestion is simply to add support for the Pencil, if possible.

Just today I was doing a very important commission when the app closed on me I was begging that nothing was gone but instead a entire half of the Image and several other layers were gone. Reviewed on 4/7/18 3:12 AMI’m currently using 4.0.8. And I’ve been using Procreate for about a year now, I recommend it to everyone that sees me drawing on my iPad. The program sells itself truthfully. I’ve used it for something as minor as sketching out ideas to freehand graphic designs for commissions. My only complaints as of now are: The opacity information from one layer is not carrying over when merged with another layer. I do my digital art in layers so I depend on the information being retained when I merge layers. There is no gesture or shortcut to switch between the brush and the eraser; this only becomes an issue when I’m in full screen mode....which I rarely use because I have to back out to erase. Procreate has a plethora of gestures one can use for many different purposes but the ability to swap between eraser and brush was left out. I feel this is way more important a function than being able to quick switch between full screen and “interface” screen, so why not swap out? That’s my two cents.

GadgetMojo's Review of Procreate
Reviewed on 4/3/18 7:36 AMLove everything about it! Procreate is really an app that gives you the space to draw by hiding everything that you don’t need from the immediate view. Everything you need to draw/paint is there in front of you. Two sliders - opacity and thickness. Color picker is always visible but tucked away in the corner (unlike in SketchBook where its super annoying). One click to roll out layers or brushes menu. (Layers in SketchBook for example, are always visible and easy to trip accidentally). The Layers interface in Procreate is so well done, it makes Photoshop seem like windows 3.11 Once you learn something in Procreate you realize that it’s very intuitive and easy to use as you work. Two/three finger tap to undo/redo is so much better than swiping or having dedicated buttons, this should really become industry standard for every drawing app. (This is off by default for some reason though. To enable go to iOS settings app, and in the apps list find Procreate. Then disable “Simplified Undos”. This actually makes them simple, but whatever, now you know ;) ) Procreate may seem as not having enough options like the other apps that clutter your screen with menus, but it’s all here. Whoever designed the app was thinking like an artist. What’s used more must be accessible instantly, secondary things are never more than one click away. Even perspective assists is there. Some Background: I wanted to have a way to draw on the go for a very long time. I watched some YouTube videos recently, and figured the mobile technology is finally ready. Before pressure sensitive devices were only Wiacom’s domain. But the idea of the same (or better) tech that can fit in my messenger bag really inspired me to get the iPad pro. There’s really no similar device out there, for any price at the moment. I really wanted to get MS Surface - to have all-in-one. But that thing is buggy to the point where you can’t draw a straight line (and so are all other brands using this tech at the moment). Wiacom’s all-in-one is ridiculously expensive plus if you can call it “mobile” well then my old PC + crt monitor is also a mobile setup ;) So I got an iPad instead (a one-trick-pony as I thought of it initially). Now when I installed Procreate I realized that this awesome app lives in the iPad world and if I got Surface instead (which I would if it wasn’t flawed) then it just wouldn’t be there. Well this thought made me feel even more happy with my iPad purchase. Especially after seeing what music making capabilities have been made available on it. Apps like Cubasis, Auria, and many cool synth apps. Wish iOS was less restrictive in terms of file system, but that’s a whole different topic. PS, I don’t mean to put down SketchBook app, it does have some nice features. I just like UI of Procreate much more. And at the price it sells for might as well get both.

If the design is simple I just print it and head for the workshop. If it's complicated, I move the Procreate sketch into another app and create a scaled drawing. Sometimes I move the scaled drawing back into Procreate and modify it further. It's a great workflow that has improved substantially over the years. A big problem for heavy users is a tendency to develop unrealistic expectations. Procreate's UI is a work of genius, yet it seems so simple and obvious in hindsight. Soon other apps seem frustrating, awkward, unnecessarily clumsy. You find yourself using Procreate more and more, even though other competently klunky apps are a better choice. And so begins the vicious cycle of addiction ... you have been warned! A few of the things making Procreate so dangerously addictive are: "tractor beams" - move selected items without touching them directly. Straight lines with snapping, angles, tractor beam end point adjustments. Plays nice with other apps - text, grids, shapes are just a cut-and-paste away. Best manual I've ever seen, filled with hidden gems.

Reviewed on 4/16/18 8:26 PMThis app is, without a doubt, one of the best drawing apps out there for iOS. Are there better apps you can get on an actual drawing tablet? Probably. Will I ever switch from my iPad-Pro and Procreate duo? Probably not. This is simply the best drawing app you can get from seven dollars, in comparison to the hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars people spend on programs like Adobe Photoshop. I started this app in summer 2017 when I still had a relatively old iPad and an awfully defective stylus. It worked fine. The Christmas of that year I received an iPad Pro from my family and later purchased an Apple Pencil. I knew without a doubt what app would work best for the pressure sensitivity feature of my newly-obtained Apple Pencil. The single (and barely bothersome) part about this app is sometimes the Apple Pencil refuses to work with it. It’s easy to fix, of course, by just double-clicking the home button and closing it and returning to the app, but I wish it wouldn’t happen because when I refresh the app I can’t undo any recent mistakes I made before closing the app. I’m learning something new every time I use the app, giving myself new ways to use it and interesting ways to improve my art and try something different every day. All in all, I’m very pleased with this app. If you’re wondering, first-timers, buy it! You’ll get amazing results and it’s easy to get used to.

Overall I think that this app is phenomenal but there are a few things that I would suggest. First, the fill tool doesn’t work on thin lines, and makes it very difficult to color. Another thing is that with the new update then it reset all the brushes I made as well as changing the air brushes. I use the airbrush as a smudge tool on every drawing but since the brushes changed then it makes it extremely difficult to complete pieces since I use it all the time. Other than those things then I would definitely recommend this app, it’s very professional and easy to use and understand.

It could also just be there are shapes and I just haven’t found it :P. Also, it would be nice if there was an animation section. I mean, the iPad Pro can handle it, and it seems that Procreate could. I mean, I don’t design apps so there could be some problem with Procreate interacting with animation, but it would be nice if there was an option to animate. So is there any progress on that? Reviewed on 3/5/18 2:13 AMI’ve tried a lot of apps; ArtRage, Clip Studio Paint, Sketch desk, I even tried Doodle Buddy at one point. But, by far, this is the best app I’ve used, it is beautiful, the brushes are amazing, and it works flawlessly for me! It’s only crashed about twice but I lost nothing. One thing that I am BEGGING the creators to do, please make this a animation app! Having this as a animation app would be perfect, it has different tools for several effects that are hard to animate otherwise and it just makes everything so beautiful, and stunning to look at. If it would be possible, then please consider making a timeline for animation!

Reviewed on 3/30/18 5:37 AMI love this app, I’m still learning but one thing I can say is having a Smart Keyboard to use the shortcut keys to navigate is extremely awesome. I have had a recent issue with the undo button not working and I think its common with people who have updated. It will be working fine when I pull a project up from the gallery then after working for a while I’ll accidentally fill the entire layer I’m working on and then I cant go back. Real b***** if i didn’t duplicate the layer but I’ve been having this issue so often that i know to always have a backup. Other then the undo button not working after a while i will also admit i have had more frequent crashes this past few days Still my favorite app but hope this gets fixed!

Reviewed on 3/30/18 4:18 AMProcreate has started lagging very frequently when attempting to complete the “undo” action. The entire app freezes for minutes, and can only be solved with a background app reset. Please fix this bug! It gets rid of saved data and completely disrupts workflow. Otherwise, procreate is topnotch for artists looking for a professional drawing and painting application. 5 stars when the lag is fixed!

Been using this app for a while now, whenever I’m stuck within something outside of this I remember why I now only use this. It has served me excellently well. I can say my ability to accomplished my target goals with this app is doable now. Definitely recommend it. This app gets 5 stars for its usability and pleasing look. I find so many uses for this app and it’s nice to this. The Procreate went into building this app didn’t leave out anything. App Store and delivered a top notch 5 Star app.

Reviewed on 3/28/18 4:39 AMFor starters, I think that if streaming is available for Facebook, then it should also be available for Instagram as well as Facebook pages. Please consider adding this function. There is also something wrong with the time lapse recorder. It never exports the entire drawing process... it will either cut chunks out, or start in the middle, which is frustrating. Other than that, I think that Procreate is an excellent app, and well worth it. The drawing experience far surpasses any other software I have used for drawing in the past.

Reviewed on 3/28/18 11:30 PMHonestly, for the price I paid I expected a lot more from this app. I have used two other drawing apps, Sketch Club and Sketch Book and both of these apps are way better despite costing so much less. I have painted on all three apps and so far I’m not impressed with procreate at all. I feel like the other apps are much better for painting with an apple pen than this one.

Reviewed on 3/26/18 7:25 PMI’ve used Photoshop and a Wacom tablet for 10+ years digitally drawing cartoons and after hearing the buzz in the art community about how slick the iPad Pro and Pencil were I took the plunge and bought one along with this app. I applaud the Procreate team for making one of the most user friendly digital art tools in existence. Highly recommend you check out the iBook first as it explains all the in-depth features that have become natural to use after just 1 week!

Reviewed on 3/25/18 5:06 AMInstead of keeping two versions on the App Store, they chose to try and force operating system upgrades, despite the havoc that can cause some people. I'm still using version 3.2, and it doesn't even have a crop tool. Have to use a different app to finish anything I start in Procreate. Brushes are great though, some good stuff going on there. But hard to forgive the attempt to force me into a new operating system against my will. And when an answer to a developer convo didn't make it through, and I asked them to re-send, they ignored my request. Totally dropped the ball. Disappointing.

Reviewed on 3/25/18 4:30 PM3-25-2018. Procreate doesn’t work again. Same problem as my previous review, below. While working on a drawing , the brush will stop working. Yet, The eraser stills works and still have pencil response for selecting of layers, brush diameter etc. the bug is that the brush will not draw/paint randomly. If I close out the program or file I'm working on it sometimes seems to get the brush to work again. Also , some of the other brushes will work, but not the one I was in the process of using. 1 star! I ‘M GOING TO MAKE A YOUTUBE VIDEO SO you guys and PROCREATE CAN SEE THE PROBLEM HERE. Maybe that will help them resolve this issue everyone seems to be having with the pencil/brush freezing non-functionality. What do you guys think a good title for the YouTube video should be? Want an easy to find phrase, like “Procreate pencil freezes”???

Reviewed on 3/24/18 11:06 PMThis app is awesome, as are the developers for constantly adding new features to it. One minor thing I’d love to see changed: if I turn my iPad Pro in a different orientation (like so I can move the home button or easily plug it in) my drawing remains locked to the original orientation. Please give an option to have the canvas rotate with the iPad. Otherwise, keep up the great work!

Reviewed on 3/22/18 11:10 PMProcreate allows ideas to flow. It’s perfect for sketching garden design ideas right on top of a photo of my clients’ existing landscapes. I import images to insert into the landscape. When I resize and move, it freezes. It happens randomly and the only way to unfreeze is to go back to the Gallery and reopen the file. I love that I can use t********** to move and resize the selected image by touching anywhere on the screen. I just wish it was consistent and did not have the tendency to freeze.
