You can read or jump around, read nearly any type of word processor file or listen to nearly any audio file. They do not have to be fitted into categories, but live happily together in one group of files. No problem with ear fatigue as you can change voices, change voive pitch and speed quickly. I could go onn and on, bbut shall conclude with another plus. Though I like Voice Dream Reader in any form it takes, each new iOS revision and sometimes just modifications and streamlining results in yet one more delightful adjunct. Worth twice its price.

Reviewed on 8/28/19 2:04 PMThe latest version is much more intuitive and easier to use. If you're a writer I think this is an indispensable tool. I listen to the things I've written many many hours a week on voice dream I use Voice Dream primarily to read text I have written. My shortest work by word count is about 10k and the longest about 130k . Errors in word use, verb tense, spell check funny stuff I can spot when hearing it that I might not spot when reading it. I find that listening to the text in different voices gives me a completely different perspective on the work. You must buy the premium voices, I think, to get the full benefit but they are so inexpensive it doesn't matter. I use probably a dozen voices. I write in my voice which sounds most like Micah the southern male voice so hearing the East Indian female voice, Deepa, read it makes me think of the piece in completely different ways. One thing I avoid is repeating the same word too often, this is something that is easy to do when writing and reading it. The voice makes it obvious I have done this. I find if I listen with earbuds/headphones I can play the voice at a fairly fast speed, it is almost as if I am thinking the words. The children's voices are comical and not at all like a kid's voice, they are a lot like the voice of a murderous ventriloquist dummy from a horror film, which makes them really fun to use. I have listened to a 51k piece in about 3.5 hours 2 times in just over one day. I can do this when driving to work or sitting around. When I edit I will open the text on my computer then listen on my iphone and edit as I go. I find it really helpful when looking for overarching themes, lines of thought that run through the text, call backs and set ups. I can set my mind to key in on a certain concept then listen to the text at a fairly fast speed, which completely changes the feel of it allowing me to focus on the single thing I am looking for at the time. It is much better than reading it outloud, which was my old method, as I can think of the changes and other things as it is being read to me. Plus the reader never gets tired of reading.

Unfortunately my father is in the process of losing his eyesight, and as a voracious reader not being able to keep up on current events and articles of interest severely depressed him. Using this application and iCloud sync, I am able to tee up a wide range of news articles on a daily basis as well as a variety of other text based materials, including even emails from the grandkids and his friends - All from my own phone sent to his iPad (we share an iCloud account.) To the developer, thank you! Returning his ability to “read” and keep up with the world has made a dramatic impact on his health and happiness. A few small requests include: - Would you consider an option that increases the button sizes and or simplifies the interface? Some applications might refer to this as ‘driving mode’ or ‘large icon’ mode? - My dad uses a number of other applications for those with diminishing eyesight, and many of those applications have him using the iPad in landscape mode. So the potential of rotating the app might allow for a simple UI transformation to bigger buttons or what not. - Using this application has both my wife and I hooked on using it as well, but for different reasons and mostly for our commute time. All of us have vastly different reading material preferences. If there was a way to create playlists in iCloud sync, so my dad could get his geology material without my aviation journals interfering would be a wonderful addition. - Lastly, if there was a way to get the app to ignore URL links, that would be huge. Many of the news stories and journal articles have links that don’t look large on screen, but when read out can go on and on and on. Thanks again!

Reviewed on 5/30/18 5:52 PMThis is an excellent update. I immediately noticed the improved margin recognition and scrolling function. If you pinch to zoom so the side margins fit the size of your iPad screen, the app auto scrolls to adjust. It even moves the pages to adapt if the margin increases or decreases within the text. If you bring up the OSD (e.g., gray progress bar, etc.) the scrolling automatically compensates. This makes reading on a treadmill almost 95% hands off. Previously I had to pinch and zoom every page or two to adjust. I’ll add more if and when I discover more goodness. Reviewed on 4/27/18 9:00 PMI lean heavily on Voice Dream; I use it regularly. It’s NOT a dusty, old, forgotten app in a corner of any of my devices, as are many pre-loaded or ill-chosen apps, which seem to still happen despite our best efforts. I can choose to save files as-is, or as an editable file. Then, my preferred voice, the very nice “Tyler” can read to me when my eyes have had enough, or when it is preferable for me to hear rather than read. I like the wide range of voices offered, they are quite numerous. I personally prefer an accent, and for me, certain documents for me tend to absorb better in my mind when read by a specific type of voice, and I choose accordingly. Though I also use UK, Russian, and Indian accents, Tyler/Australian is my default. I save web pages, various documents, PDFs, notes, and long e-mails, and can listen to them all at my convenience. Another big thing I use it for is to listen back to what I have written, to check for typos, or for any other writing errors. It helps catch those stray mistakes (though I didn’t use it for this, in case there are errors;). Then I can edit them right on the spot, and continue on, and do a final check for flow when all is thought to be corrected. I keep all sorts of various types of files, and Voice Dream has been a dream to have and to use. It’s very easy adjust the speech rate as desired, and I doubt many others have the range of voices and accents they provide. I’m sound sensitive, very much so, so I’m glad there are the well-varied options to make it just right for me. I find Voice Dream to be flexible and user-friendly, and it is absolutely my indispensable go-to reader and editor’s assistant. And not to be overlooked, any time I’ve had a question, which has only been a couple of times, and I’ve had it for years, ever since they first had the Lite version, support has been responsive and my questions were answered in a timely manner. It’s one app I can’t do without. Thanks, Voice Dream:)

Reviewed on 4/2/18 12:46 AMI do prefer this to the built in read-aloud system Apple has hidden away in its accessibility setting. I like how Voice Dream is treated like music, and I can back up to hear a sentence over if I missed something. I like how Voice Dream will continue on when I turn off my screen, which the built in will do for a time before giving up. I like how Voice Dream has a timer, though I mostly control when it stops through my headphones, since it shows up like one. I like how there are voices with different accents and pitches and speeds (though I can get those with the built in version without having to pay upwards of ten dollars for a new voice to decide I don’t like them when they aren’t saying their prepared speech). And both can be taught pronunciation, though my experience with read and lead are not good. They both don’t use data or need WiFi to work, which is nice. Listening to a full length story that takes up the space of 15 minutes of songs? Yes please! I like that I can choose the color, and customize how the app shows the word spoken. There had been a recent update, though maybe not, I haven’t kept up with when the changes happen, and any word starting the the letters “capt” automatically says “captain”. Which makes words like captive (“captain-ive”) captain (“captain-ain”) and the like not very easy to understand. From my tinkering, it’s not a problem with the voices. I’ve tried it with multiple drum different groups, and I’ve tried fixing it in the pronunciation dictionary, but it won’t stop. I’ve gotten used to it, but I think I’d like it more if that problem was fixed. If there is one thing I like more from the built in than Voice Dream is the dictation used when figuring out pronunciation of a word. That almost sold me if I hadn’t already put so much work into my pronunciation dictionary in Voice Dream. I have many foreign words in the documents I read and listen to, and I think I hate it when I come across a word with a hard G sound. (G as in the g in get) I have to finagle the spelling with only the English alphabet to get what I want, and sometimes I have to settle for good enough. Over all, I like Voice Dream. It’s a good app that I’ve used for quite a while, and I like how customizable it is. It just needs a little improvement before it gets five stars from me.

But it not only reads it reads much better than any other similar free app. And I know because I tried all the free ones first and they sounded so incredibly robotic that the sentences were melting into each other and I couldn't grasp what I was reading at all. They also had bad intonations on words which also caused confusion. No this isn't a "cheap app" by measure of general app prices but when you measure the value that you get over the life of this app allowing you to read while washing dishes, driving or eating a meal, it is well worth every cent. This app has saved me hours and time is money! Not only can I multitask but I'm also reading much faster when it's the only thing I'm doing because it's scrolling for you and the added time of each thumb swipe is gone. You're now reading hands free. Also, in addition to the included voices, there's an option for premium voices and the option of simply putting it on mute and letting it scroll for you if you prefer your own voice for reading. If you want something that's upfront "cheap" or free they're out there in other apps. This, to me, is cheap when you do the longterm math. Btw I've had this for years and happened to just review now since I was already in the app store to share the link with a friend. Good luck and happy shopping

It bothers me that i have to go to different websites through different databases every time i want to look something up from a text-and this requires internet. But voice dream reader allows me to pick the chapters I want and store them all in one place for quick reference. This app doesnt require internet!! Love that i can listen to my textbooks while driving, exercising, or even sleeping (hoping unconscious knowledge diffusion is possible). Anyway, one of my favorite features of this is that i can search either an individual pdf or can put in key words in the search button on the home screen and see which pdf titles contain what I'm looking for. Can be a little slow occasionally but considerinng how much Ive stored on here i dont blame it. I can even upload powerpoints into the app One complaint is that I can’t change the name of the document once it is imported into voicedream. However, even if I could I still don’t think I could import directly into the app because the format from the internet doesnt translate. Must save pdf first before pulling into the app, which can sometimes be a bit tedious. Want to put this out there in case others have the issue. I was having an issue with certain letter combinations sounding distorted. It turned out to be an error caused by ibooks, because they encrypt the text when you import things into ibooks. I thought that was the only way to pull book chapters from the internet on ipad, but turns out you can get it to download from a mac computer as well and store it wherever you like-drive, desktop,..etc. I reached out to the company and customer support was very helpful in troubleshooting the issue and quick to respond to my emails. Thanksss for making my commutes hands free, learning adventures!!! Love that i can use this time to study instead of panicking about what im missing during necessary, and often messy commutes.

This app works perfectly and is the most effective means to get through all the reading. This is much better than iBooks or any other pdf/ePub reading with speak enabled. The voice is solid and is actually able to pronounce the medical terms. It allows you to alter pronunciation on specific word and write out in syllables if computer is saying it wrong. You can continuously increase speed as you become use to it. Finally it remembers your spot and the pause and play is 100x better than any reader specifically concerning the application reading to you as you follow. Reviewed on 12/3/18 12:59 PMUPDATE: This was already a fantastic app, but the latest update knocks it out of the park. Great new layout, export, and sync options. I'm especially grateful for the iCloud sync between devices and the ability to crop out the header or footer (updated since my review below). The voices are the best I've ever heard in a voice reader, developer and support team are amazing and very responsive. Honestly every feature I was hoping for it feels like they included in this update. Worth every penny. It's incredible to see developers put this amount of time and care into their apps. This is an enterprise quality app. Well done and many thanks. __ I have a long commute every morning so I spent a lot of time trying dozens of different voice reader apps. I wanted something that could read my library of PDFs to me while I was in the car. For a while I was reluctant to try voice dream reader because of the price tag. However every other app I tried had little annoyances that kept me coming back to the App Store to find a better one. Finally I bit the bullet and purchased this app. It was worth every penny. Here's why: 1. It has an incredible library of voices. I found these voices far superior to other apps who sound much too mechanical for my ear. You have to buy these separately, but once you find one you like it's easy to lose yourself in your book and forget your listening to an automated reader. Additionally the app has had consistent updates that improves voices and features. 2. It has a VERY impressive set of tools that includes bookmarks, highlighting features, and the ability to pull webpages into the app. Also great export options! 3. It can handle a robust range of file formats. I was originally looking for just a PDF reader, but have sense found that this app can play multiple document and ebook formats. But what really blew my mind was that this app could also play my MP3 audiobooks! I have lots of long MP3 files and I don't like listening to them in my music app or google play because I can't easily skip ahead or back, or it doesn't save my position, or I can't select the right speed... The list goes on. This app solved all my problems and I use it almost every day. Studying, leisure reading, work... I use it for everything. Is there room for improvement? Sure, there's always a feature or two that would be useful. For example, I would love the ability to crop the reading field on a PDF to crop out footnotes or the title/page numbers at the top. Hopefully we'll see that feature in a future update. Still, this app has nearly every feature a serious book lover, student, or business woman could need. Don't let the price tag scare you. It's worth it.

Beware you don’t get all versions of the Will voice when buying the main Will voice. Only mission-critical bug I’ve found so far: Fails to read out initialisms as individual letters. That renders most technical texts unusable, especially about computers, government, law, engineering, etc. Workarounds for now: 1. (Geeky) Use an ePub editor with regular expression replacements to automatically rewrite the book files to use period-separated initialisms. 2. (Boring) Put every combination of three or four upper case letters into a pronunciation list, or at least the ones your books use most. Possible future workaround requiring minor app update: 3. (Geeky) It could be solved with one or two tiny rules in the Pronunciation Dictionary instead of thousands, but its RegExp option does not seem to support numbered replacers like ‘\1’ (backslash-one) at this time.

I’ve noticed for me that listening is easier than reading when I’m not in the mood and is a way to reduce the activation energy of a task that I wish to get done. It’s also useful for catching up on articles saved for later to read in pocket. (I started using pocket for this amazing feature) also had it read me a 50 page orientation guide for work and over al just love how it makes things easier. I read great, but we don’t all have the energy or patience 24 hrs a day to read everything. Plus it allows me to get through more material faster and has sold me on the whole power of text to speech! Because I saw in another review mention that you can have Siri read you things by setting up accessibility settings and then doing a swipe down on any screen. Yes this is a nice feature I also use, and used prior to finding this app. To me they have different use cases as the flow and how they are used and how well they work in a variety of different situations compared to each other is quite different. This is useful for actual work and learning and processing things. Siri accessibility feature is helpful to also have turned on but is only good if you are already physically reading the article or page and item at hand. This is helpful to share anything too and then go to it when wishing to and have it read away.

This app makes it easy to read anywhere I go on my iPad. I read on my commutes or where I can find time to squeeze in five minutes. I can sometimes, depending on the piece I am reading, simply put in my headphones and listen to the piece without having to have my iPad out. I also really enjoy that I can highlight and the premium voice really makes this app stand out from other applications like Speechify for instant. BUT there are somethings that I wish this app could do better. Footnotes and footers- while the app can distinguish between in text citations and gives the option to skip over these (super healthful for me) it does not skip over footnote sections at the bottom of the page or footers at the end of sentence. This makes listening to articles on the go difficult. No Apple Pencil writing- while I do like that I can highlight the articles as I am reading I wish that I could also use my Apple Pencil to write some notes on the margins. I would suggest making the Apple Pencil only for highlighting and writing and fingers ONLY for scrolling. Selecting words is not accurate - when I am working through a large book like Capital Vol 1 I like to start of at a slow wpm like 190 and eventually work my way up to 250 words and I am actively highlighting as I read, but I find that highlighting becomes in accurate. I often click on the define time when I mean the highlight one. Then when I go back to select the same word to begin defining a section the app does not allow me to select this word again so I have to stop the audio track and start highlighting at the end of the sentence as opposed to the beginning. Does not get much easier when using the Apple Pencil either. I also wish that I could BOTH high light and book mark a selected text on the same tap. It would also be really nice to be able to export the highlighted pdf but I do really appreciate that I can export my highlights in a text document. This makes writing article and paper drafts so much easier. Overall I really love this app. I bought and downloaded so many other tts app but they all lag compared to voice dream. My first issue was with the reading cursor not following along when scrolling- if you have a ‘sit down and read’ session like I sometimes do you can get quite ahead of your listening. It would make sense for your listening cursor to follow along otherwise if you leave the app for any length of time you are sent all the way back to where you last listened. I emailed the developers to point this out and their response - “The app is designed to follow the reading once Play is selected. You can turn down the volume for your selected voice if you'd like to have the cursor follow your reading without sound. The cursor is the place holder for where you leave off. Sorry for any inconvenience.” So instead of improving the app their solution is to have YOU change how you read a book? I shrugged and decided to use a different app for reading and just use this one for listening. Now I ran in to another issue when trying to listen to a pdf. I used to be able to set the margins on imported pdf files so it wouldn’t read the header/footer at the beginning/end of every page. I couldn’t find the option anymore as it now “auto detects” these margins. Unsurprisingly “auto detect” is not foolproof. I ask about custom margins and their response: “Thank you for reaching out. Custom margins was replaced by auto-detection of margins in the last version (4.5) of the app. Sorry for any inconvenience.” I’m noticing a pattern here. I spent good money on this app, but now it appears to have been abandoned by its developers. Whatever you do DONT BUY IT!

Reviewed on 12/3/18 12:59 PMMy friend John in Texas recommended the app suite to me in 2013/2014 because it helped him hear his emails and web pages as his eye sight deteriorated. While I can see and read written words, my primary preferred input method is voice/oral, as an Oral learner. So I always want to convert text-to-voice to hear before reading (Paul said in Romans 10:17 “faith comes by HEARING...”) So it’s listening anytime on car journeys and walking the dog etc that I depend upon. I listen first then read later. So I depend on Voice Dream. It’s very easy to convert content to a stored document for later hearing. Because I’m a Brit I prefer UK English accents so that was easy to add too as was slowing the voice speed to 155 words per minute. One feature add I would request is ability to play from Apple Watch. For good execution of this feature look to the current Audible app on iPhone that allows sending individual books to Apple Watch from audible library. Thank you again for a easy to use app. Forgive me for not submitting this review earlier. Reviewed on 12/25/18 1:17 PMExpensive app with massively underwhelming TTS voices. Every one feels incredibly robotic, and you have to pay for more? I decided on “Will”, which sounded like the most natural voice based off of the samples. Cut to actually reading an ebook, it sounds chopped up, with awful intonation, awkward diction, and blatant mispronunciation of even basic words. I often have to pause and re-read sections because it’s simply incoherent when read by the TTS voice. Of course this is an occasional problem with any TTS system, but never near as much as with this one, specifically. The only reason I could see people giving this positive reviews is if they have just discovered TTS for the first time. There’s several other apps even on the app store that do what this does, significantly better, for free. It’s a shame, because the app itself has some nice features and design. It does more than any other reader app on the iOS App Store, but ironically, there’s ones that do far more in Android, for significantly cheaper. This app just charges so much because they have a total monopoly. But, the downright awful quality of the voices makes this borderline unusable for me, and incredibly frustrated that I now just have a $15 reminder of how bad Apple’s lack of a return policy is. Almost every other app that I’ve tried has significantly more natural sounding voices, all of them free or included in the price of the app. And they never cost anywhere near $15. Expected far more out of something this pricey. I want my money back.

Reviewed on 12/16/18 1:06 PMThe standard out of the box voice (Heather) is the most human-like I’ve ever heard. Also, the “pronunciation dictionary” feature is amazing - allows you to change how the voices pronounce certain words if you don’t like the default pronunciation. This is great for the few instances where there’s a word or acronym or name that occurs frequently in a text (reoccurring newsletter or book) that I want Voice Dream to say it differently from the default. I hope the App is taking this data that we users meticulously enter and is using it to guide future adjustments and improvements to the reading engine that the developers build. While this app is nearly flawless in my eyes now, one annoying bug has keeps in recently: when switching into the app to a reading that has been paused, it frequently jumps to a random point in the text on the screen. If I hit play, it resumes playing at the point where I left off and a quick 2-finger tap will take me back so the right part of the text shows on the screen, but it’s annoying to have to do this when I am regularly switching between Voice Dream and another app I use to take notes on the books I read (Microsoft Word, in case that helps catch the bug!). I hope the team can hunt this one down as they have caught all the others in the past. Keep it up! :)

Reviewed on 12/16/18 1:06 PMI’ve had this app since it was released. In most instances I prefer Voice Dream to actual audiobooks. Which means you can make any pdf, epub, mobi, etc a high quality audiobook. The speed control, bookmarks, notes, location recall, duration of books (which changes dynamically when increasing/decreasing the speed), sleep timer, document thumbnails, various sorting options, custom folders, library sync, etc. It also allows the user a ton of control in its visual appearance, so it’s a great general reader in its own right. It’s easy to upload files from dropbox. Many of the additional voices are amazing and specific voices are assigned to specific books. In comparison the built in iOS TTS is cludgy and poorly implemented with no features. There is no comparison. To me it is worth we’ll more than the asking price. I guess it depends on whether or not you use the full feature set and if you like supporting small developers that value their users and respond to support inquiries and feature requests. The only feature I would love is the ability to play music in the background. I use the brainwave app to make this happen but it would be much easier and better to use spotify, apple music, youtube, etc to play background music with Voice Dream. VoiceDream handles both sets of tasks very well. As a newbie to T-to-V, I was a bit disappointed with the artificial flow and pacing of the text but alas, that is the state of the art at this point. I have tried other T-to-V apps and found the same shortcomings in terms of the flow and pacing. Also, I found that it is important to try different voices to find the one(s) that are most comfortable. I purchased two voices but finally settled one of the iOS voices. One thing the app doesn’t have is an Mac OS X version. It would be nice but it isn’t crucial for me. I really appreciate this app. Update: I am currently a graduate student and this app is just as useful as the first day I got it. The staff is helpful and responsive, and the purchased voices are very good. This app is an asset to students of all stripes. Get it. It’s worth it.

Have recommended it to many family members and friends, always receiving a thanks for the recommendation. The developer is truly exceptional. The support of this app throughout the years has been second to none! Get it, you won't regret this purchase. And invest in some enjoyable voices. The variety is great. Best return on investment of any app that I've bought.

Reviewed on 10/13/17 10:12 AMThere are some apps that I downloaded try and use again. This app is not one of those. It’s an app that I use multiple times on a daily basis. It’s a very good app for listening and learning. And, I highly recommend it.

Reviewed on 10/12/17 3:52 PMThe single best app available for iOS. Honestly, it's worth buying an iPhone simply to get the app--it's that good. I don't have much to add that hasn't been said already. I'll just say that I'm a professor of history at a public research university and I use this app for listening to all the readings I assign and the supporting texts I use to develop course lectures. I even listen to student papers submitted by email as Word files. As you might imagine, I read quite a lot for my work--but not nearly as much as I used to, thanks to this app. I've discovered that I process information much better listening than reading, in part because as I move more quickly through material I more readily grasp broader, unifying themes. I’m utterly dependent on this app.
