I. Love. This. App!!! I love nature and this app helps me cultivate this love. I’ve identified bugs, invasive plants, decorative plants, trees, snakes, spiders, and more...but what’s better is after the app helps me ID these observations, I GET TO LEARN ABOUT THEM!!! 💜💜💜

It need a lot of work. For example while trying to add an observation, I was unable to input the species ID. I’ve only very recently begun adding my observations and the first few went like a breeze with no issues. I kept getting: request failed. Service unavailable(503). Other parts have been often unresponsive even from the first time opened. I frequently get error codes while using as well. Forgive me if there’s already a solution that I haven’t been made aware of.

I can’t say enough good things about this app! I am a hiker and mostly hike to see the flora and fauna, but I never know what I’m looking at. Now I can learn more about my surroundings and have some awesome people to talk about these discoveries. Every day I look forward to using this app!

This app image uses recognition software and crowd sourcing to help you identify living things, from anywhere or everywhere. Take a photo. Take a guess what it is using the support of the AI in the app. Upload it and then let a world of experts help you in figuring out what it is. Give back by helping others figure out their photos. Learn the living world around you.
Jenjaxmom's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 6/24/18 2:23 PM
This app was introduced to me by an intern who is working at the Deering Estate in Palmetto Bay, Fl. I’m of an age where I kinda hate my phone (ugh, all this technology while looking at nature?) but do love to take photos so I can research the animal/plant when I get home. So this is a game changer. I no longer have to pull up my photos while juggling 3 plant books and make a guess. I don’t have to chase down my kids incredibly patient camp counselors and stick my phone in their face asking “what it is?” How amazing is this? You can see where other people have seen the same thing! And the info is right there! So ok you got me. This rocks.
irish naturalist's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 6/2/18 11:39 AM
Incredible app, linking in to a fantastic community and team of developers. The new update with automated "suggestions" of species identifications from photos (using the latest machine-learning technology) is truly impressive (at least in the data-rich United States - a bit less so in Brazil where I now live). I also love that observations are shared with the global GBIF database, where they can be used to inform conservation and ecology research.
Myrledarr's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 6/19/18 10:38 AM
Many apps will help you identify species. This does an amazing job, is free and identifies plants, insects, birds and much more. The app can automatically ID many species. If it can’t, the community of naturalist volunteers will work it out most of the time.

Handy for identifying all sorts of flora and fauna. I like having other people confirm or correct my ID. Perfect app for someone inquisitive about all things nature. I do think perhaps I am missing how to mark the location of my observation- is there a way to type in the location? When I click on the blue dot on the map, it records the wrong location?

Brassmoose's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 5/9/18 3:52 PM
I use this app every day in the context of both teaching and research. Between this app interface and the even deeper tools of the web interface, there is endless potential to explore the natural world in creative ways. I teach natural history to amateurs and this app opens up new practices and new questions all the time. It’s the ideal marriage of digital technology and traditional nature study. It also turns casual hikes or walks into fun scientific adventures. I esp like that I have had the opportunity to interact with experts who identify my records or offer helpful insights. I would not normally have this kind of opportunity.

Khan D Khore's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 5/7/18 1:03 AM
I thought this app was designed to help you identify things in nature. It took 30 seconds to 1 minute to get the information I needed from google. This app wants you to take a picture and scroll through possibilities like a rattlesnake and a butterfly when the image is of an ant... It is more likely that they are just using people to gather statistical information to sell at a later date. This garbage is getting dumped as soon as this review is done. As I stated in the header, Google does it better(& faster)..🐒💩

i love this app so much i love finding out more about the wildlife around me and the actual names! one suggestion i’d like to make is being able to friend people! it would be really cool to be able to connect with people around you and see what kind of things they’re finding. i had many of my friends download this app and we all use it together but i can only ever find their content by accidentally stumbling upon it while i check out recent photos in my area. other than that i have no complaints this app is amazing and i’ve learned a lot already!!
ShadowJack77's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 5/3/18 4:57 PM
The terms under which they allow you to use their app are completely one-sided, you have virtually no rights. They own everything. Read that and understand it completely before signing on to this!

This app has really peeked my interest in our Natural systems. Even on my local trails there is an abundance of plants and animals to see and document. It really is fun to take photos and learn what the different plants really are called. I can imagine this as a great school project.
Ohionat's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 5/29/18 12:38 AM
As a naturalist I use this app a lot I think it’s a great resource for citizen science and for establishing a database and Park systems state wide and country wide. As a naturalist I use it to track new finds, or to see what others or finding. The only thing I would change is the ID suggestion section. I think established databases such as USDA plants, Peterson or Newcomb's guides and others would be more accurate sources(than Wikipedia) to use when identifying plants and animals. These sources would have more detailed descriptions that people could use to narrow down their choices. Wikipedia is too vague with descriptions and not 100% accurate.

calmaslon's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 5/22/18 3:32 AM
App is super fun and easy to use but in the last 6 months my observations go days and weeks without being identified, some I ended up deleting rather than waiting. What’s happening? Did it become too popular and you don’t have enough people to ID the pictures?
holden♎️'s Review of InaturalistReviewed on 5/2/18 11:50 AM
I love this app! People help me identify beautiful things I see. However, today alone I've seen two pictures of dead animals (graphically dead as well. Like blood and everything) it made me kind of uncomfortable and I think a report function or a death-free setting would be nice, people could flag their posts so people could avoid them.
molfamily's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 5/19/18 2:33 PM
If you need the information to be accurate this app is not for you. Too many bugs and lots of lost data. Pretty pictures but not reliable for science purposes.

Clemalemma ding dong's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 5/13/18 1:05 AM
I’ve been really enjoying this app over the last month, but the explore function could use better filters. To search observations in a more restricted area, you’re required to zoom in/out on the map. It would be a ton more useful to simply put in a text filter, such as a state or county rather than trying to fine tune a maps view extent. I really like the ability to upload observance photos directly from your phones image gallery after you’ve left the field. Definitely helps conserve data usage. Relatively easy to navigate the app, and very fun to see what others around you are observing!

Jelly212's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 5/11/18 4:04 PM
My property is on the foothills of a small mountain and my yard is sloped with woodland native and non native species. 2 years ago trees were removed nearby allowing 100% more sun on my hill and much more woodland abundance like I have never seen in 20 years. This spring has been amazing with new growth and thriving patches of flowering weeds and medicinals. iNat lets me keep up with what’s growing or migrating here as I cultivate a natural habitat for birds, plants and woodland wildlife. I can make notes as to growth timelines throughout the growing seasons and have it all handy next spring so I can know what to watch for /keep as my native hill evolves. Thanks iNaturalist!
CassGarr's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 5/1/18 4:34 AM
I adore iNaturalist. In all honesty, 90 percent of the time I spend on my phone is exploring on this app. I can’t wait to use this for my future students. I spend so much time outside trying to collect as many observations as possible! Then I like to test myself to identify as much as possible without the app’s help. I’m learning SO much! SUGGESTION: Video upload option? It’d be amazing to see organisms’ movement and pair it with sound!
nycexplorer's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 5/1/18 2:43 AM
This is an unbelievable app!!! Snap a photo upload it, if you don’t know what it is, the app does an unbelievable job of identifying it for you, or giving you an amazingly close list of choices. Plants, insects, all the thought stuff! Really amazing, it is a crazy set of guides all in one. And you are contributing to a citizen science database! On holiday, in my neighborhood, I love making a contribution and learning new species! My favorite app, it drives me to want to explore and know more!!!

LongPooper's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 4/4/18 6:08 PM
Mandatory registration that is not disclosed when you buy. And the registration is buggy — I got “password don’t match” errors five times in a row despite extreme care to enter identical paswords! And certain password combos are not allowed but the rules are not disclosed. And ALL registration fields are reset (not just pw) whenever you have an error. Horrible stealth consumer data grab disguised as useful software. And they charge you for it! Calling Apple right now to get my $$$ back. :-(
EMLzzzz's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 4/29/18 3:12 AM
I found it to be extremely bothersome to have to basically zoom in and out just to find a location on where I took my photo. It would be better if you allowed people to put addresses in similar to google maps.

I introduced this app to my 8 year old who spent several hours looking under rocks and figuring out which weeds are edible. This app is easy to use and enjoyable for any age. We discovered a woodland salamander, got some fresh air, sunshine, and sampled some new foods.

N. Braier's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 4/22/18 2:25 PM
I really wanted to like this app. Unfortunately the irritations started the moment I installed it. First, developers should disclose mandatory login requirements. Most app users are like me: I’m not keen on setting myself up for a spam storm until I’ve had a chance to determine if a new app is useful. This app appears to be virtually non-functional if you skip the login step. Then the error message start. LOTS of them one after another, and they’re the classic head-scratcher sort that make the user feel stupid because you have no idea what they mean or what to do to stop them. Five minutes of this was my limit. This app sounds like a nice idea, and the well-done illustrations featured in the App Store and the splash screens fooled me into thinking the app was designed by an experienced developer. It’s not. The user experience is just no good. Please hire a good UX designer and try again. You’ll likely find that 10x more people who download the app will continue to actually use it if you improve the UX. The concept is good. However as it stands it goes straight to “Delete”.
Fortune 14k's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 4/22/18 2:04 AM
Works excellent, but the camera won’t let you tap to focus so small flowers don’t show up well on my iPhone 6 camera
Michael M Fuentes's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 4/20/18 8:26 PM
Loving the app, but I would like to suggest some fixes for the identification search when uploading pictures. Some were quite obviously not the species I took a picture of, but I knew the name beforehand, and ended up searching by name rather than using any of the suggestions, since the suggestions said “We’re not confident enough to make a suggestion but here are our top 10 suggestions.”
AmericanAnthony's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 4/17/18 2:04 AM
Inat is such an incredible way to bring awareness to nature. It’s fun, rewarding and it helps people appreciate the ecosystem. I’m only giving it 4 stars though because the app is nowhere as good as the website.
Jkelly35's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 3/18/18 3:23 PM
I love this app! Such a terrific concept and it works wonderfully. One thing they should add is a way for you to connect (should make this optional), so you can contact people who have seen/caught the animals in your area. I would love to meet up with other people in my area to go herping. Can’t say enough good about this app though, love it!
FrederickcirederF's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 3/17/18 10:23 PM
More people should definitely use this app! I've changed my rating from 5 to 4 stars simply because the app needs to include more of the features seen on the site, particularly viewing profiles - both one's own and others.

I have learned a plethora of information about the “wild side” of our backyard and local park. It is so much fun to upload a photo of something and have it identified. This app also provides the citizen scientist a great way to contribute the the greater scientific community by identifying population points of specimens.

Careibo's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 2/15/18 5:04 AM
After reading a glowing review of this app in The NY Times magazine section, I went home and downloaded it. It missed on every photo I loaded (it identified a sun conure as a budgie, and a Yorkshire terrier as a carnivore/Dog), but did identify lily of the valley correctly. Just for fun, I loaded the recent photo of Donald Trump from behind, hair blowing to reveal his mangy baldness. The app identified it as a wild boar, bullfrog, and brown rat. Close....

As a biologist with a passion for wildlife this app is an excellent resource, to both catalogue my photographic finds and to identify them.
MikeHedman's Review of InaturalistReviewed on 12/3/17 5:38 PM
The biggest bonus is the simplicity: just upload a photo, and within a day you get great feedback about what you saw. I like the location hotspots - being able to see that a species is common to where you made your own observation is really helpful.

iNaturalist is a great community sourced nature application that allows users to learn about a comprehensive amount of wildlife whether plant of animal and and observe and record their findings. The application makes it easy to learn about wildlife with all the captured data from scientists and other users like yourself including titles, descriptions and photos of subjects. The community can also aid you in your findings with suggestions on wildlife you have observed. Users can look up wildlife captured in their location or easily add it with the camera on the device they are using. The app allows users to create projects you can continually add to as well as follow projects from others you are interested in. iNaturalist also has a news section detailing the latest captures from the community as well as the latest developments concerning the application. For professionals as well as amateurs iNaturalist is a great tool to learn more about our everyday surroundings both near and far.
