It’s integration with Working Copy is beautiful, and it is mostly a joy to work in. But, when compared to Sublime Text 3 or VS Code on a desktop, it’s not even close. Textastic needs a control palette and a faster ability to get to files (via CMD + P). It also needs more variety when it comes to theming and code editor options. It’s local file system, albeit a symptom of the underpowered iOS, is a bit confusing and unintuitive. Lastly, the interface just has something about it that feels unpolished. Good work so far, but there is so much that this editor leaves you wanting.

If I go home while editing a file, I would expect Textastic to appear in the ‘recents’ section of my dock and in the App Switcher when I press Cmd-Tab, but it hasn’t appeared in either place. This behavior has been consistent. I’d also love to see more Shortcuts support, so I could pass a file to transmit to SFTP to my server, but for now it works fine to open documents and I can send them manually.

Bugs 1 - once a file's link is deleted another can not be made. 2 - file's link can not be edited. 3 - a new file created on the ios device can not have a link. 4 - using ssh on ios is buggy due to lack of background multitasking. SSH tabs are killed after some time in the background or if Internet connection is lost. MOSH would be a better choice. Would like, in order of importance... 1 - each open file should be associated with a particular server and folder in that server. Right now all files upload or download from the same server and same folder. Having to switch each time a file gets edited and saved is enough inconvenience to often not use the app. 2 - Better editor. Ability to complete code for example. Reviewed on 11/23/18 12:40 PMI use Textastic, and my iPad, by habit for code writing. I have a copy on my iPhone to sync and test. It is somewhat handy to have an iOS code editor. One must be parient with its limitations. There is no “clear cache”. “Open in Safari” is worthless. If a local file links to an online CSS there is no telling which cached version of the CSS will be loaded. (Like, a *very* old one on my iPhone and an *even older* one on my iPad.) For an accurate view I must download and link CSS and its imbedded files (fonts and SVGs) locally, or upload the updated HTML and look at the online version in Safari by explicit URL. I found the MacOS version of Textastic primitive compared to BBEdit, so sometimes, when extreme needs arise, I go to the laptop. BBEdit is king. Textastic does most things quite well. (Read the features list.) By habit—tinfoil hat—I keep both local and iCloud copies of files—along with what gets FTPed. Textastic has no multi-file search. Text selection and pointer placement in long sections of “tidied” text can be…er…tedious. [Edit: the developer has responded as to his ability to reproduce “it” in various other apps. My main gripe is the inability to clear cache. Clearing cache has no relevance to the other apps to which the developer has referred, and indeed and obviously, is not true of syncing simple files in other apps. Web-interlaced/browser-involved files are a different matter.]

Reviewed on 11/23/18 12:40 PMIt's not every day that I feel like I have to go and update my app reviews, but the newest update really made my life so much easier. I have an iPhone 6 Plus, and now I can easily keep a few different files open and switch between them quickly if I need anything. This has made working with many different files at once on my phone so much easier because I can always have them at my fingertips. I also appreciate the addition of the SSH client since I do use SSH. While it's not totally necessary for me, it is kind of nice to have. I also really appreciate how the app is under 20 MB. It's lean and doesn't use a lot of system resources, power, or space. I can type for up to 12 hours on my iPhone 6 Plus with a connected USB keyboard without charging. It's a welcome break from apps like Facebook that are now easily a quarter GB in size and use huge amounts of system resources and power. I first purchased both the original iPad and iPhone versions of Textastic when I was working on code for a project. I upgraded to version 6 as soon as it came out. For me this app is a must have because it recognizes so many different kinds of code and text files. I use it for a lot of my homework assignments and writing papers in LaTeX. I even use it for storing short snippets of text and taking notes. It also works well with VoiceOver which is a huge plus. I love the little extra keys that sit on top of the regular keyboard because it helps you type in special symbols more quickly. The themes are so neat because you can customize it make it look the way you like so that it doesn't make your eyes uncomfortable. I often use this app with a USB keyboard on my iPhone 6 Plus, and that works well because I can use a lot of familiar keyboard shortcuts to speed things up.

You can store all the resources (graphics, images, scripts, stylesheets, etc.) in their proper places so the entire site can be uploaded as it exists on the device. My typical workflow starts with Graphic for graphic and image resources, Pixelmator to edit images to size, and Textastic for html, css, and Javascript as needed. iCloud files are synced automatically so I can pick up on any device, and upload to the web host directly from the iCloud directories. This is one of the essential apps that make the iPad so incredibly useful.

Reviewed on 11/23/18 12:40 PMThis app has no MDI paradigm — no open file list, tabs, etc. So your workflow is expected to be “one file at a time”. What’s worse, you can’t get a list of edited files — you have to, one-by-one, “upload” them to your remote server or Dropbox. There’s not even a classic “*filename” indicator that a file has been changed. So keeping your files in sync is pretty much down to remembering what you’ve changed. So this editor works fine for a one-off update to a single property in a single file, but its poor file management makes it a bad choice for a code IDE.

It will be great if we can edit in remote server and save instead of download and edit on local and trip load again. Thank you very much . Anyway great job . :)

Reviewed on 11/23/18 12:40 PMI’ve been using Textastic since it first came out. It has consistently been improved and new capabilities added. It has evolved into one of the top text and code editors available. Many features I haven’t even explored. Go look at the list of features! Edits local, remote, iCloud, WebDAV and web files plus more. It has become one of the most used apps on my iPad. If you do coding on your iPad, then you gotta have this. Thanks go to Alexander for creating this!

Reviewed on 11/23/18 12:40 PMI previously wrote a negative review that was rescinded because the issue was a macOS issue and not related to the app. I have to ding the app again because it has seized working on the IPad. The app keeps freezing and some times crashes back to the home screen. If it was free it would just get deleted, being paid for it gets in a review.

Reviewed on 11/23/18 12:40 PMI have been using this app for a few months now and has been really useful. It's a great deal for the price. I can start working here and continue working in my iPad or MacBook with the Textastic for Mac App without any trouble. All the files are sync into my iCloud Drive and update with each change I made. You have preview built-in, so you can see how your file is looking without closing the app (No available for Mac). If you manage different websites, you can upload your files with FTP. You can work offline if you like. The common buttons or symbols bar makes the coding part easier and faster, sometimes I code faster in my iPhone than I do in my Mac. The only thing is that doesn't run PHP code (you can code it but not running it). Hopefully this feature will be added with the new Apple Announcement. ———— Update: I have you this app for a couple of years and it have been great. New features were added and now has SSH console. I’m just wondering is theres a way to disable “open files in new tab”, I liked the way it was before Textastic 7.

Reviewed on 11/23/18 12:40 PMWhat a fantastic update! Textastic already blew my socks off long ago, and I honestly couldn’t have asked for more. But with the ability to get to a command window on hosts in the same app is really a dream come true. No more editing, switching over to another app to restart a service or check a log file, then switching back to edit, only to find when I need to get back to the console, the other app has disconnected. The SSH shell is rock solid too. When I saw the feature in the update notes, honestly, I didn’t expect much. My experience with iOS terminal emulators in general has been so-so. This one beats them all hands down! Granted I haven’t put it to hard use yet, but so far, it’s by far my favorite. Fantastic job! Thanks so much!

Reviewed on 11/23/18 12:40 PMI had purchased this app before and now in order to get the update and support my iPhone X I had to shell out another $10. Not cool. Be wary of this developer and paid updates. :( Honestly considering Coda as an alternative...

Reviewed on 11/23/18 12:40 PMAbsolutely worth far more than the ten bucks I paid for this thing. I can now work on my JavaScript and CSS homework assignments on my iPad. Of course my keyboard turns this into a mini-Mac for the most part. But this app makes it all possible. Also, a good app to pair this up with is “Inspect Browser,” since you will need to debug on iOS. I like Brackets for the Mac, but I may check the OS X version of this out since the iOS one is amazing.

Reviewed on 11/23/18 12:40 PMThis product is amazing. The only thing I would want to see added is native support for connecting to g** repositories. This app really gets it right when it comes to editing. Other apps might have more IDE features but I love that the things Textastic does are of an extremely highly quality.

Reviewed on 11/23/18 12:40 PMReally great app. I’ve been using it for web development and every time I google something like “how to open the JavaScript dev console on iPad” I find out that it would have been difficult to do, except for the fact that it’s already included in Textastic. Basically a one stop shop for web dev.

Reviewed on 11/23/18 12:40 PMUptill now I was using my MacBook Pro and BBedit to write code. Since I have a new iPad Pro to replace my iPad mini I got the desire to try coding on my new device. In my search for a good programmers editor I found this app. After some research I hit the buy button in the Appstore. After a 10 minute exploration of the app I’m coding away making a dropbox link went smooth and easy. Perfect app for me.

Reviewed on 11/23/18 12:40 PMThis looks like the app of my dreams for further replacing my computer while traveling. One request... instead of Yet Another App Asking For Dropbox Credentials, and yet another file browser, this needs to integrate with the Files app in iOS 11. Apple has solved this problem, and once everything I need supports it, I’ll be happier for the consistency.
