Reviewed on 11/26/18 12:40 PMI'm a huge fan of Oceanhouse Media's Dr. Seuss books. I have purchased every single one for my daughter, who is now four years old. With two exceptions I would give every one of them five stars. So when I wanted another, but no new ones had been released, I decided to give this one a shot. It's not very good. For the most part, this has nothing to do with Oceanhouse Media. The treatment seems to be the same high quality I have come to expect. Oceanhouse's treatment is incredibly formulaic, but the formula is a good one, and always executed with care and attention to detail. This just isn't a very good book. First, it's heavy-handedly Christian. I know that sounds like an unfair complaint about a book based on a Christian holiday, but realistically Christmas is a secular holiday as much as a Christian one. And Christmas trees are primarily the realm of Santa Clause's Christmas. Anyway, the references to g** in this book are pretty ham-fisted, which I found off-putting. But that's not what really bothered me about it. The big problem is that it is looooooooong. And boring. And the author makes an amateurish attempt at Seuss-style rhyming and just doesn't pull it off. For one thing, (s)he drops out of rhyming whenever a good rhyme couldn't be found, and most of the rhymes are awkward and forced. Honestly, while I didn't like the bits about praising god, not to mention an explicit bible quote, complete with citation to chapter and verse, that's not my primary reason for disliking this book. Even if that is your cup of tea, I would imagine there are far better Christian books out there than this one.
